The button on the computer keyboard does not work. Possible reasons for the failure of the keyboard are noutube. Factory marriage, or Time takes its toll.

Does not the laptop keyboard work? It can not be said that this is a typical situation for modern technology, it's quite a rare breakdown of laptops. And if in the case of a PC in the cause of a breakdown, you can even not understand, simply replacing one keyboard with another, then in the case of a laptop things are much more complicated, because its keyboard is an integral part of a single, integral design. What are the reasons for the failure of the laptop keyboard, what kind of consequences can be expected, how to get out of the situation, when you need to enter the text promptly on the laptop - all these questions and consider below.

1. Is there a black list of models of laptops predisposed to breaking the keyboard?

Before we begin to directly consider the very problem of laptop keyboard failure, a few words about whether it is possible to prevent the occurrence of such a situation. Is there such a black list of laptops - specific models, products of a specific manufacturer, which would in practice prove their propensity to break down the keyboard? No. In the market of computer equipment there are no such models, for which in practice there would be a tendency to this failure. The laptop keyboard of any manufacturer can fail. And this applies to both flagship models, and budget.

2. Possible causes of failure of the keyboard noutube

Before you carry a laptop to a service center, you can try to figure out why the naotebka keyboard does not work. And if this is a software failure or problems with the keyboard cable, your attempts can be successful, and you will save on the services of the service center. So, let's get started.

2.1. Software Failure

The reason for the failure of the noutube keyboard operation may be due to operating system errors windows systems. Typically, this happens in the event of a driver failure. You can check this in the BIOS. To exit the BIOS, restart the laptop and hold down the Del key. In some notebook models, F1 or F2 buttons may be used to exit the BIOS. This point can be specified in the notebook manufacturer's instructions. If the keyboard itself works in the BIOS itself, you can load Windows into the safe modeto further test whether the keyboard is running without drivers and with a minimal set of system services.

You can access the safe mode of Windows XP, Vista, 7 using the F8 key, which you need to hold while the system boots. The boot mode selection menu appears, where you must choose to boot in safe mode without drivers. In the case of Windows 8 / 8.1, the output to the safe mode of the system is somewhat different, some preliminary system settings. Follow the path:

"Control Panel" - "Administration" - "System Configuration".

In the "Downloads" tab, set the value to "Safe Mode", click "Apply", "OK" and reboot. After reboot, you will go into safe mode.

You can restore the settings to the previous state in the same way by removing the value of "Safe Mode".

So, you are logged in to Windows Safe Mode. Check the functionality of the laptop keyboard. If the laptop keyboard is in safe mode, then the problem lies in the operation of the drivers. If the keyboard is in a secure windows mode   does not work, while the BIOS responds to the input of data, most likely, the problem - in the operating system.

After returning to normal mode windows Workflows   perform work on installing or updating drivers.

Download and install driverpack. This is a special type software, designed to select drivers for specific hardware components of the computer device. Having scanned the laptop and determined the drivers necessary for the installation, driverpacks automatically remove from their database their installers and conduct the installation. Driverpacks on the Internet can be found in the image of a DVD with the available driver database, but it's much easier to quickly download and install the software client driver package, which after scanning downloads only the necessary drivers from the Internet in the latest, up-to-date version.

DriverPack Solution, Slim Drivers   - client programs of these driver packs on the Internet can be downloaded absolutely free. This is the two leaders among drivers, they are popular with users because of the free and regularly updated driver base. Run a driver scan to scan the laptop and install (or update) the driver that the program will indicate.

You can install or update the driver without resorting to driverpacks. Download them manually from the official website of the manufacturer of your laptop model.

If the installation or updating of the laptop drivers does not solve the problem with the keyboard not working, you can try reinstalling Windows itself. For example, Windows XP - to date it is an outdated operating system, and perhaps, with install Windows   7 or 8 / 8.1, the problem with the disabled keyboard will disappear.

2.2. Pressed or oxidized keyboard loop contacts

If you have been using the laptop for a long time, it may be that the problem of the disabled keyboard is in the oxidized or depressed contacts of its loop. To test this option and try to solve the problem, the laptop will have to be dismantled. If you are the first to disassemble the laptop on your own, use its instructions from the manufacturer. Instructions to many models of devices can be downloaded online in an electronic version, in particular, on the official website of the same manufacturer. Also you can watch video tutorials on how to properly disassemble a laptop, on YouTube or other resources.

After reaching the tail of the keyboard, detach it by sticking it out of the connector, and carefully inspect it. If you see obvious damage during the inspection, therefore, this is the reason for the laptop's non-working keypad. And you can solve it by replacing the cable.

If, with the tail of the keyboard, everything is in order, wipe the contacts with a wand moistened with alcohol, or use an ordinary eraser. After cleaning, insert the keyboard cable back and test.

2.3. Failure of the microcontroller or spilled liquid on the laptop

If the cause of the laptop's non-working keypad is a burned microcontroller or spilled liquid, in this case, you can not do without the services of a service center. Determine decisively which hardware components of the laptop are out of order, and solder them at home (of course, if you are not an expert) can not.

When you spill liquid on the laptop, if it gets on the board, this eventually leads to oxidation of the contacts. As a result, the keyboard completely fails. If you accidentally spilled liquid on the laptop, immediately unplug it, remove the battery and dry it with a hair dryer in a gentle drying mode. If the model of the hair dryer has a cold air button, use only cold air. This is necessary in order, if not prevent, at least slow down the oxidation of contacts, chips and boards.

3. It is urgent to enter text on a laptop with a disabled keyboard - how to be?

The keyboard does not work, but you urgently need to send a message. Or even to download the same driver from the Internet, you will need to enter its name in the search engine. How to be in this situation?

3.1. Virtual Windows keyboard

Windows has built-in functionality that emulates a physical keyboard - it's a regular application "Screen keyboard". Click the "Start" button, select "Accessibility", and here - "On-screen keyboard".

Press the mouse to enter the desired symbols. On the screen the Windows keyboard   implemented the button "Options", when you press it you can make some settings to configure the application for you.

Windows 8 / 8.1, in addition to the regular application "On-Screen Keyboard", has an alternative in a slightly different format. This is a special touch keyboard for tablets and laptops with a touch screen - a smoothly moving window with large buttons, so that it's convenient to get a finger on them. If your laptop is running Windows 8 / 8.1, the panel windows Tasks   call the content menu and select "Properties".

The "Taskbar Properties" menu opens, go to the "Toolbars" tab and tick the "Touch Keyboard" option.

3.2. USB Keyboard

If it is a question of speed dialing the test, of course, with the on-screen keyboard, a lot of things can not be done. Through the USB port of the laptop you can connect a physical USB keyboard.

3.3. Bluetooth Keyboard

Bluetooth-keyboard is a physical keyboard that can be connected to a laptop via the Bluetooth module. Almost all modern models of laptops are equipped with this module.

If you do not have a keyboard on your computer, then you are at the address. Here you will find step-by-step instructions   on the solution of such problems. The reasons for this problem can be many, and their solution is also not small. First, you need to understand exactly when this problem arises and what it is related to. Typically, the keyboard can buck up when the operating system boots when entering a password or while typing. The first malfunction depends on the type of keyboard, and the second on mechanical influences on it.

Why the keyboard needs to be cleaned periodically

Just want to say that if you do not part with the keyboard even while eating, then choose the time, turn it off, and good at it.

Keys stuck and incomprehensible keyboard work often happens in those people who like something to chew while working at the computer, or even better - to drink a beer or sodas.

If your keyboard is not packed in a protective film, then all the crumbs and liquid from the bubbling drink will be inside it. It is not necessary to spill drinks on the keyboard. It is enough to put a glass with a bubbly drink next to it, and all these bubbles will settle on the keyboard, and even get inside it.

And if you like to chew seeds or nuts, then your keyboard probably accumulated crumbs, which is enough for a good meal hamster. Do not believe me ?! Then take the keyboard in hand, turn it over, and shake it over the table.

What to do if it does not workUSB-keyboard

Check the keyboard connection. If it is wired, the wiring inside the cord, either at the base or at the USB connector, could break.

If the keyboard is wireless, then check the batteries inside the keyboard and the USB transmitter connected to the computer or laptop connector.

It happens that the transmitter or the USB connector is faulty, where it is connected. If it's a USB connector, connect the transmitter to another connector.

Let's check the keyboard connection settings inBIOS:

  1. Enter the BIOS settings (how to do this, read in the article);
  2. We are looking for a USB Keyboard Support or Legacy USB item (it depends on the BIOS version) and switch Disabled to Enable.

Perhaps with a USB keyboard you can not enter the BIOS settings. Then you need to find a keyboard with an old PS / 2 connector or find an adapter for the old connector.

What to do if the keyboard does not work according to the protocolPS/2

Finding a keyboard with a PS / 2 connector in the store is not so easy, but some have it still in the process and sometimes it can also fail.

In order for the keyboard to work again, you must reinstall its driver:

  1. Right-click the "Start" menu button and select "Device Manager" from the drop-down list.
  2. Find the keyboard in the device list and open the list. Usually, if there are any problems with the device, then near this device there will be a yellow circle with an exclamation or question mark. Click on the "HD Keyboard" label with the right mouse button and select the "Delete" action. Confirm your action and close Device Manager.

  1. Restart the computer. When you boot, the computer will install the required driver.

Why the keyboard does not work when the system boots

Most often this happens with a wireless or USB-keyboard during the reinstallation of the system or during the selection

Date of publication: 10.05.2012

There are many reasons why your keyboard may not work well or, in general, not show any signs of life. First, you need to immediately determine the root cause of such a failure: software or hardware. In simple terms, either the keyboard itself is faulty, or the problem lies in the Windows settings.

So, in order ...

The keyboard works, but some keys do not work well (stick, do not respond to pressing, etc.).

The reason is usually simple - the keyboard is dirty.

You need to disassemble the keyboard and clean it. It does not matter what kind of keyboard you have (usb, standard, wireless, built-in laptop). Turn the keyboard, twist a few screws. Here you will see that under each button there is a rubber lining. Sometimes it happens that the overlap breaks or "slides" from its place   - As a result, the corresponding key does not work. Then you just put everything in its place.

Buttons can be wiped with anything, any cleaning agent. But a translucent film and everything else is better not to touch. By the way, in order not to get confused where some key should be, take a photo of your keyboard in advance. Of course, you can then find the model of your keyboard on the Internet and place the keys. But, still, it is much more convenient to take a picture of your keyboard. Some even number the keys with a pencil so that they do not get confused. After "cleaning", place the keys in places, place the rubber pads (they can be placed in any order - they are all the same). The work is painstaking, but the result is a perfectly working keyboard.

Problem with connector

If you have a classic keyboard (with a round purple plug), it sometimes happens that the small legs of the plug can bend.

In general, a connector of this type is called PS / 2. Purple for the keyboard, green for the mouse. If you forcefully insert a plug, the legs may bend. Then you need to take tweezers (or small pliers) and straighten all the legs.

USB Keyboard

This is a regular keyboard, only connects not to the PS / 2 connector, but to the USB connector.

If such a keyboard does not work when connected, the problem is most likely hidden in the BIOS settings (SETUP). When you start the computer, press Del (or F6, all have different keys).

And since in bios settings you can not use the mouse, then a reasonable question appears: "How do I press Del at startup and how will I set up bios if the keyboard does not work for me ???!" The problem is solved simply - go to a neighbor and ask him for a keyboard for 5 minutes :)

Wireless keyboard

I'll ask you a stupid question: "Did you charge your keyboard?"
   Surprisingly, but usually the battery is simply discharged, and people forget to recharge it.

And it also happens that Windows simply can not install the drivers for your wireless keyboard. Then look for the driver on the Internet manually.

Drivers

It happens that some new installed program   unconsciously spoils the keyboard driver. If you have Windows 7 installed, then problems with the drivers should not bother you. The system installs and restores drivers. Usually, you just need to restart your computer.

But there are cases when the driver is spoiled, or new driver   it does not work. In such cases, you can do two things. First, restore the system to the day when the keyboard worked fine. Secondly, you can go to the device manager and update the driver, or see their properties by looking at the diagnostics.

Keys do not work in a specific program or game

You must find the settings for the program or game and see the key assignments. In general, study the settings. In games, as a rule, keys can be reassigned. And in the programs look at the list of hot keys.

Some other tips

If you turn on the computer, it issues three long squeaks   (beep, sound) - this means that you have incorrectly inserted the keyboard. Just pull out the plug and insert it again.

If the keyboard does not work all at once, first check it on other computers. If you only have one computer (usually all have it), then go to your neighbor and check the keyboard on his computer.

Sometimes it happens that the mouse (computer) starts to work badly - to seize and hang. The mouse will always seem to be disconnected and connected (the computer will sound signal   on connecting the device). Due to the fact that the computer will constantly recheck the input devices connected to it, the keyboard will also start to work poorly. Then just pull out the mouse, and double-check the keyboard.

And there are cases when the mouse and keyboard can not work simultaneously. This happens EXTREMELY rarely, but it can happen. In an unknown way, some mouse models are simply incompatible with some models of keyboards (?!). I personally faced this case only once. Usually you can cheat your computer in this case. You need to find a mouse or keyboard in the registry and give them different names. Sometimes this helps ... For the same reason, joysticks (gamepads) sometimes do not work in games. For example, the game allows you to use gamepads only from Microsoft, and the rest just do not work. Then you need to find in the registry your gamepad and rename it to the name Microsoft.

If the keyboard does not work, and you still need to find something on the Internet (for example: the driver for the keyboard), then you can use the on-screen keyboard.

It often happens that you are preparing to perform some important work, and then bang - and the keyboard on the computer does not work. What to do in this case? How to cope with this disaster? Understand this and find solutions will be easy. This article will consider a question that often arises in novice home PC users or already experienced professionals. Yes, it's all about the keyboard - it works, then it does not, and work needs to be done. The reasons for such problems can be many, and most of them can be solved by the user himself, without departing from the workplace. The question of buying a new device can be deferred until the exhaustion of the resource of the existing "whimsical" girlfriend. In addition to attention and the ability to properly perform actions, special skills from the user in the process of solving the problem will not be required. For any model of any manufacturer of a computer keyboard, the reasons for refusing work and the ways for their qualitative elimination in a short time will be given.

Possible causes of device failure

Using the method of the legendary Sherlock Holmes - the method of "deduction" - you can determine what is broken or what prevents the keyboard from doing its job. Factors such problems can be called:

  • human, that is, the breakdown is caused by the actions of the user;
  • iron, and in other words, equipment failure;
  • software - violation of settings and necessary programs   and their complexes.

Understand why the keyboard does not work on the computer, what to do in this case, you can, having studied and probing the possible reasons. Based on the identified factors, the causes of violations in the device can be such situations:

1. If the user himself by his actions or inactivity led to problems in working with the keyboard:

  • the integrity of the connection ports of the device is violated, or its cable is broken (transmitted);
  • the ingress of moisture inside the input device due to a poured cup of tea, coffee or direct rain from the street;
  • excessive contamination of the internal parts of the keyboard with dust, animal hair, crumbs from food and other debris.

2. In case the problem is in the equipment itself:

  • the keyboard was not originally a working keyboard;
  • the electronic component of the keyboard or some of its elements went out of order and require the intervention of specialists from service centers;
  • short circuit or voltage surge caused by both problems with other elements of the computer's iron part (power supply, motherboard), and malfunctions in the centralized electric network.

3. The main reasons program failures in the keyboard can be called:

  • failure of device drivers;
  • the main settings of the motherboard (BIOS);
  • is disabled for some reason in the operating system itself.

In more detail, all the reasons given and the solutions are discussed further.

A cable or port is damaged

How can I know if there is a reason why the keyboard on the computer does not work? What can I do if I can confirm this particular problem? You can answer this question after a certain simple diagnosis is made. To do this, the user needs to do the following.

1. To check the integrity of the cable:

  • Look at the display on the keyboard itself and try turning on / off the buttons "Caps lok" and "Nam lok". If the LEDs are lit, then most likely the cause is not in the cable.
  • If the LEDs do not light, connect the keyboard to another free port (USB or PS / 2, depending on the type of device). LEDs lit up - the reason was found. The problem is in the corrupted port.

2. How to test the keyboard connection port:

  • Take any other device with the same type of connection and try to connect it to this port - if it works, it means that it's not in the port, but in the cable of the keyboard or its electronic component.
  • If the other device does not work, then you need to recheck the settings of the motherboard (BIOS) for the disconnected power for the specified port.

After such a check, there should be a result, giving an understanding of what has broken down, or allowing you to understand that it's not a cable and a keyboard port. Elimination of the problem of a broken cable or port is possible only with the help of professionals in the centers for the repair of computer and office equipment.

Faulty device

Although it's pretty funny, there are times when a user tries to connect a "dead" keyboard and is very nervous that it does not work. It happens because of forgetfulness and ignorance. Anyway, having passed all the points of analysis, you can easily understand everything.

Completely barely spilled

How to understand why the keyboard does not work on the computer, what should I do? But picks at the same time and flashes light bulbs (or just picks)? In this case, the frequent cause of the problem is getting into the device liquid: tea, coffee, drinks or just water. All this fluid is electrically conductive, and therefore leads to a short circuit that can cause the sensitive electronic elements of the keyboard or port controllers on the motherboard to burn out.

In order not to buy a new device, the user can neatly disassemble the keyboard and dry all the elements. With a probability of 50 percent, he can expect success, that her friend will come to life.

Garbage woke up, or Oh, those little kittens

Eating at the workplace, as well as the presence of pets with wool, is very bad for the PC input device. And then the question arises: "The keyboard does not work on the computer, what should I do in this case?" The answer is simple - just as with a liquid-filled device, it is necessary to perform a complete cleaning of its internal part. If you're lucky, lumps and clumps of dirt do not have time to lead to a short circuit of the elements, and then everything will work again.

Factory marriage, or Time takes its

The keyboard as an electronic device can be assembled with a marriage leading to its quick failure. In this case it is necessary to send it for repair to the service center of the manufacturer. If the warranty period has expired, then it is necessary to compare the repair prices in the paid workshops and the new keyboard, choosing the best solution for yourself. Identify such problems by a way similar to diagnosing the device cable and the connection port.

Power surge, or Computer failure

If in this case the keyboard on the computer does not work, what should I do? When downloading, you need to pay attention to how the computer itself behaves: everything goes as usual or the start occurs (does not happen) with a failure. The result of a failure in starting a PC can be a power surge in the electrical network or a failure of the power supply, which in turn can affect both the operation of the keyboard and the operability of the entire computer device as a whole. To determine the keyboard malfunction, in this case you need to connect it to another computer and test it.

Drivers flew

None of the above came up. The keyboard does not work on the computer, what should I do? Windows 7 Genius keyboard sees well and, if possible, picks up drivers for them. But it happens that the device of another company or with special multimedia capabilities, then their separate installation is required. If such a keyboard suddenly ceased to work, it's possible that the drivers for it have just disappeared. It's easy to check in the "Device Manager" - if the keyboard has a yellow question mark icon, then it's the drivers.

BIOS lost settings

If the keyboard on the computer does not work, what should I do? Windows 8, as well as other earlier versions of the OS, stubbornly does not want to connect the device. In this case, you need to restart the computer and look in the settings of the motherboard (BIOS) by pressing "Delit" or "F2" (for some computer devices) at startup. Among the tabular settings, you should first compare the date and time with the real one (if it shows a very old one, you may need to replace the battery on the motherboard), and then find a line indicating the power supply to the ports (YUSB or PS / 2). If disabled, enable. Also, you can simply reset the settings to the factory settings by selecting them in the offered menu.

Antivirus, or OS protection programs

It happens that the keyboard does not work on the computer, what should I do? But it picks up the virus and at the same time displays a message about the Trojan or malware. In this case, most likely, the drivers or keypad control program were mistaken for the virus, which resulted in blocking the device access to the operating system and, accordingly, its inoperability. Here you need to create an exclusion rule for the antivirus in its settings, specifying the path to it installed drivers   any programs.

It also happens that the keyboard does not work on the computer, what should I do? The virus can infect the drivers and device management programs themselves, and therefore it is impossible to create an exclusion rule. First, you need to reinstall the corrupted files, and then conduct a full scan of the computer for malware.

If you turn on the computer and the keyboard does not work, does not respond to keystrokes, and the indicators do not light, there may be only two errors: a hardware failure or a software failure.

What to do if the keyboard does not work because of a hardware failure

Hardware problems that can lead to a failure of the keyboard are quite a bit. Usually this is the absence of contact in the connector (the plug is not fully inserted into the connector), the failure of the input device itself and the malfunction of the motherboard port.

First you need to make sure that the keyboard is connected correctly, especially for keyboards with a PS / 2 connector. The keyboard has a purple plug and it must be plugged into the same color connector the system unit. The plug may not be fully inserted into the connector, resulting in a loss of contact. You should check this point, and it is better to disconnect and reconnect the keyboard. After all the manipulations, try restarting the computer. Often happens that during the initialization of the device there is some software failure. A reboot usually solves such problems.

To make sure that the keyboard is working, as well as the port for its connection, you will need to find another working keyboard. If the known good keyboard on your computer is working properly, then the problem is in the input device itself. In this case, you'll have to go to the store for a new keyboard. If the initially working keyboard does not work on your computer, and yours, on the contrary, functions on another computer in the regular mode, then there is probably a defect in the motherboard. Correction of this malfunction without computer diagnostics is problematic, therefore it is better to contact specialists. Also, do not forget that you can have a software error, which we'll talk about below.

What to do if the keyboard does not work due to software

A software malfunction, as a rule, consists in the incorrect operation of the driver. Eliminate this problem, provided that the mouse is "in the line".

Go to the Start menu, and then click Control Panel. Here, open the "System" section and start "Device Manager". If there is a problem with the drivers, next to the keyboard in the list will be a yellow triangle with an exclamation point.

Right-click on this line and open the "Properties". Now go to the "Driver" tab and click the "Delete" button. Confirm your actions, and the keyboard driver will be removed from the system.

Now you need to update the hardware configuration and search for the connected devices. To do this, go to the "Action" menu of the Device Manager and click "Update Hardware Configuration".

The system will detect the new device (keyboard) and reinstall the driver for it. If you are using a multimedia keyboard, you may need to install drivers from the disc to run it properly. Such a disk is usually included in the kit. It must first be installed in the optical disk drive and when prompted by the New Device Wizard, specify the path to the drive to install the drivers. If the installation is successful, the LEDs will light up on the keypad. When the New Hardware Wizard finishes, you will need to restart the computer for the changes to take effect.
