Equipment

... Obviously not in the box that the new Mi Box has (to be precise, the model name is MDZ-16-AB, the designation Mi Box 3 is used in the interface) looks exactly the same as the old one. Inside you can find the player itself, the remote control, the power supply, the HDMI cable and quick guide user. In general, the set is quite sufficient, you can only complain about the length of the HDMI cable - one meter may not be enough. On the other hand, the player is so small that it won't be difficult to find a place for it under the TV.

Design

The appearance of the player has not changed - it is a small black box a couple of centimeters high with rounded corners, similar to a smaller version of Apple TV with “slicked” edges.

The body is matte, completely plastic, fingerprints appear on it, although not as quickly as on glossy surfaces. There is an infrared receiver at the front on the side edge, all (very few) connectors are concentrated on the rear panel, there are no buttons on the body. From the connectors here you can find the full-size uSB port, HDMI-out and mini-jack, which combines analog audio output with digital optical. The previous model also had a microSD card reader and slot micro USB OTG for connection peripherals, in the current model, the manufacturer decided to abandon them.

The player stands on a rubberized ring, which noticeably reduces (although does not eliminate at all) the device slipping on a smooth surface.

Remote control

"Remote control" also brings to mind Apple TV (previous generations) - it is a small "bar" with a four-way joystick and a confirmation button inside. There are very few buttons here - turning on, adjusting the volume, activating the microphone and the system Android buttons "back" and "home". The remote control lies well in the hand, the buttons are pressed easily and distinctly - you can only find fault with the volume rocker, which is hard to feel blindly. The remote control works via Bluetooth, so it is not necessary to point it towards the player (the infrared receiver on the Mi Box case is, in fact, a "fallback" option and can be used in conjunction with a regular IR remote control if desired).

Hardware platform

The player uses the SoC AMLogic S905X-H, which includes 4 Cortex-A53 cores operating at frequencies up to 2 GHz, and the Mali-450 video subsystem. There is 2 GB of RAM, there is also an internal storage of 8 GB (about 4 GB is available to the user). To connect external storage there is a USB 2.0 port, Wi-Fi 802.11a / b / g / n / ac, 2.4 / 5 GHz is responsible for connecting to the network (there is no wired connection here).

This chipset is not the most productive, and will not work for "heavy" games - however, there are not many of them on Android TV, to put it mildly; and with its main task - the reproduction of media content - it copes well.

Software

Unlike the player we reviewed earlier, which ran a regular version of Android, supplemented by its own launcher, the MDZ-16-AB model uses Android TV 6. I must say, this is a rather rare case, players on "TV" Android are still very few (only three such models are listed on the official website, including the Mi Box). Another important nuance - MDZ-16-AB is an international model with full access to Google services.

In the past, we already got acquainted with players on Android TV (see our reviews and), therefore, in detail on the features of this operating system We will not dwell - the Mi Box shell is a "naked" Android TV with minimal interference from Xiaomi (which can be attributed, in fact, only the section of the company's recommended applications, which includes Netflix and Red Bull TV clients). Otherwise, everything is traditional here - announcements of several films, a list of installed applications, access to Google play TV & Movies, Games and Apps. And, of course, voice search: the key element android systems TV is fully available here, since the microphone is still built into the local remote control (unlike the same iNeXT TV 2). With its help, you can search for content in all applications installed on the system that support this function - both in English and in Russian. Speech recognition is very good, so voice search can be used as the main option here, referring to text only as an exception.

In work

However, third party programs can also be installed bypassing Google Play - using apk files written to a USB drive (for this, you will have to allow the installation of applications from unknown sources). However, for programs not optimized for Android TV, you will most likely have to connect a mouse or gyroscopic remote control with mouse emulation.

4 GB of internal storage - frankly, not very much, but the situation can be corrected by connecting a USB drive to the player and formatting it to install applications from the market. On the Internet, you can find users' complaints that this function does not work for them, but in our case there were no special problems - despite the player's statement that the connected flash drive (with very decent speed characteristics) "works slowly" , applications on it were installed and launched as well as from internal memory.

Mi Box supports Google Cast, this allows you to stream video and audio content from a smartphone to TV: just install the Google Home application on it, after which you can send videos from YouTube, online radio from TuneIn Radio, etc. to the TV. Home can also duplicate video / audio from a smartphone, which allows you to use Cast, albeit with less convenience, and in applications without its support - for example, to view photos on a large screen.

In an express test for compatibility with various formats and performance when playing video (conducted in the VLC player), Mi Box performed very well: all films were launched either almost instantly, or (in the case of 30-50 GB video files) in a couple of seconds. The player coped with 160 Mbps bitrate without any problems, which is enough for any video, including 4K. 4K video at 60 fps, H265 video with 10-bit color depth, etc. were also played without any complaints.

Conclusion: The main advantage of the Xiaomi Mi Box (MDZ-16-AB) is, of course, Android TV. There are still very few media players based on this particular version of the OS, although it is much better suited for large TV screens than the usual "smartphone" Android, which is used in most modern players. You can find fault here only with low performance in heavy 3D games, however, they are clearly not a priority target when buying a set-top box, and with their main task - the reproduction of online and local media content - the new Xiaomi Mi Box copes very well.

Specifications

It all started with the fact that on the TV in the guest room it was necessary to organize TV viewing. I had no desire to pull wires, cables or install antennas. The TV is good, but not SMART, and I didn't want to buy a new TV set for the sake of SMART. I started looking for a solution, and my brother advised me to watch the Xiaomi MI TV BOX 3 TV box.

I've reviewed a lot of reviews, comparative characteristics and reviews. And I realized that this is what I need to solve my problem. At the same time, I save a lot if I bought a set of satellite television.

The mi box also supports Google Cast and now all materials from your smartphone, tablet or laptop can be streamed directly to your TV. A useful thing that our family uses regularly.

First of all, no extra wires and difficulties with installation. The set-top box has compact dimensions, and the remote control works via Bluetooth, which makes it possible, in general, to hide it behind the TV.

The device serves to expand the capabilities of a regular TV: it allows you to connect to streaming services Netflix, iVi and Google Play Movies, can work with YouTube and install applications from the Google Play store, and plays music and video files.

As for the hardware of the console itself, we can say that it is enough to use the main functionality. During the tests, no microlags or freezes were detected, Xiaomi Mi Box works like a clock. According to the Antutu benchmark, the filling of the device roughly corresponds to Xiaomi Redmi 3, so we do not recommend overloading the console with heavy applications. Most games will work, but minimum settings.

Using the Xiaomi Mi Box TV Box

At the first start, you need to connect the remote control to the set-top box by turning on the device and bringing it closer to 20 centimeters. Of course, the real performance of such devices is not measured at all by the clock frequency and the number of cores, but by the hardware support for decoding the required audio and video formats.
