Ruler Lji Ji 3 review. Review and testing of the flagship smartphone LG G3. Design, body materials

Detailed testing of the new flagship of the Korean company

LG has once again updated its flagship smartphone from the top-end G series. The company's new flagship was presented after all competitors had launched their flagship solutions for the coming season. By this time, we had already managed to get acquainted with the Samsung Galaxy S5, and with the Sony Xperia Z2, and even with the new incarnation of the HTC One, which received the ordinal index M8. All these top-end novelties are united by the fact that they run on the latest version of the Qualcomm hardware platform - Snapdragon 801, which is currently the most powerful and advanced mobile devices on the world market. Each of the top novelties this season has some unusual feature, be it a fingerprint scanner, a blood pressure meter or something else; there was something unique about the LG G3. First of all, the new LG flagship boasts an unusual screen resolution: Quad HD is still a unique solution for smartphone screens. True, it is difficult to say with complete confidence that such a resolution is a real necessity for a mass user, but such an unusual characteristic certainly attracts attention. The new flagship smartphone of the Koreans also has other differences - both unique (for example, the presence of laser focusing) and those found in previous models of the series, but in this case, they have undergone significant processing. In general, the changes are enough to investigate the new product in the most detailed way, which we will do today.

Contents of delivery

The LG G3 smartphone arrived at our editorial office in a catchy and large enough box made of solid cardboard with a golden lacquered lid. The box looks quite stylish, contains a minimum of necessary information on its surfaces, everything inside is also neat and thoughtful, which cannot be said about the configuration itself.

Unlike its eternal rival, LG firmly decided to adhere to minimalism, which is why all its flagship smartphones are equipped with only the most minimal set of accessories. This has gone back to the days of the first LG Optimus G, which, to everyone's surprise, did not include headphones, and everyone is already used to this by the release of the third flagship. Unfortunately, the complete set of the next top-end novelty of the Koreans is also extremely ascetic, which does not at all fit with the huge cost at which the company's new flagship smartphone is offered in retail. For 30 thousand rubles, customers could be pleased with some additional "goodies", especially since the new LG device supports wireless charging. However, there is nothing like that in the kit, there was only a charger (output current 1.8 A) and a Micro-USB connection cable.

It is worth mentioning an additional accessory made in the form of a book case with a round window through which information from the smartphone screen is displayed in a special mode. For this shape of the window, the cover even received the corresponding name QuickCircle. The accessory, of course, is sold separately, and differs from the familiar Samsung counterpart in that here the back cover acts only as an attachment to the main cover of the smartphone, while the Samsung cover is installed instead of the main cover, completely replacing it on the device body.

Appearance and usability

The first thing to note: the new flagship LG, unfortunately, did not keep within the reasonable size, which, albeit with difficulty, corresponded to its predecessor. Unlike the LG G2, which was a large, but still quite sleek pocket mobile device, the novelty crossed this invisible line, firmly taking its place among the "shovels". And the assurances of the company's representatives that with such a large screen the smartphone managed to keep the dimensions digestible for a human hand do not pass here. No, I couldn't. LG's new flagship is a real tablet, no matter how much the developers themselves wanted to present the situation in a different way. The device turned out to be very large, although the narrowed edges and a small mass for such a huge size to some extent smooth out this impression. Still, it's a pity that the Koreans could not restrain themselves in this strange race - after all, their previous flagship came out as a device that was quite elegant in terms of dimensions, and nothing seemed to bode well for such an “explosive” further growth.

However, this question can only worry those who still see in a modern smartphone not a tablet, but a neat and miniature mobile assistant that fits in an average pocket. Those who have firmly decided to combine a smartphone and a tablet in one device will not find anything shocking here - after all, without exception, all top manufacturers in the new season have also significantly increased their flagship smartphones in size. When and at what point this race of gigantomania will stop, it is already completely incomprehensible, since the border of reasonable limits has long been overcome.

As for the design, it remains essentially the same as in the LG G2, only the materials have changed. More precisely, not even the materials themselves - after all, the case was and remains plastic. However, this time, the developers have managed to give the plastic a look that at first glance cannot be distinguished from real metal. The back cover has added texture to look like a roughly sanded metal surface, and a wide shiny bezel that runs along the entire side perimeter looks like real steel. At least this is what the gray version of the smartphone looks like, which we tested. And yet there is no metal here, only high-tech spraying on plastic.

Due to this peculiar coating, the device turned out to be completely non-marking, and since its front glass has excellent grease-repelling properties, the new flagship significantly surpassed its predecessor in this matter: LG G2, on the contrary, was completely glossy and very easily soiled device.

The back cover is removable, which leads to the usual way of installing cards, and a replaceable type of battery. In this regard, the new LG flagship stands out favorably against the background of modern solutions, in which either the battery is sealed, or the SIM card needs to be removed with a paper clip, or the memory card slot is not found. The LG G3 has everything in order with this, everything looks the way it looked a few years ago in the vast majority of communicators: you can remove the cover, change the battery yourself, insert any memory card (up to 128 GB). Unless there is no slot for a second SIM-card, but this option is usually not found in flagships.

Both cards are located vertically one above the other, but unlike the SIM-card (Micro-SIM format), which is tightly supported by the rechargeable battery from below, the memory card can be easily removed and installed without removing the battery. On the opposite side, you can see a group of contacts connecting to contacts on the cover itself: the device supports wireless charging, a separate wireless charger has been released for it.

The back surface of the smartphone itself contains a block of buttons that has already become familiar for modern LG smartphones, and a dual flash and a laser rangefinder can be seen nearby. We will also talk about the laser installation for measuring the distance to the subject of photography in the corresponding section, everything is clear with the flash, now many top devices are equipped with two multi-colored LEDs, but the button block has changed. We specially photographed it so that it became clear that none of the keys now stick out from the body. Recall that in all previous models (with the "rear" arrangement of the button block), the lock key protruded significantly and could well be accidentally pressed, especially if the smartphone was lying on some kind of crumbling surface - even the protective bumpers did not save. So this unusual unit underwent another improvement, this time everything became almost perfect. However, the very option of placing buttons on the back of the smartphone remains controversial, not everyone liked it, many could not get used to it, so the opinions of users on this matter remain exactly the opposite.

The purpose of the buttons remained the same and quite standard: the central key fulfills the inclusion and locking of the smartphone, and the other two, above and below, are responsible for adjusting the volume. The extended capabilities of the block of hardware buttons provide additional functionality in control: a long hold of the upper button launches the Qmemo application, the lower one calls the camera from sleep mode, and a long press of the central button activates the shooting of a photo or video.

There are no hardware buttons under the screen on the front panel, their role has long been played by virtual icons on the display - in some applications the strip with buttons can be removed, but in others it remains, taking up part of the working area of the screen. But it is possible to reorganize the number and order of buttons according to the user's taste.

In general, very little free space was left below the screen, and this is quite logical, since there are no hardware buttons there. Due to such narrow frames, the developers were able, as in the case of the previous flagship, to accommodate a larger screen than is usually the case for a case of this size with a traditional width.

Above the screen, the strip is also quite narrow, so that all the elements placed on it literally lined up in one line: the front camera peephole, sensors, an elongated earpiece grille, and here there is another useful element - an LED event indicator. The indicator dimly shines in various colors, notifying about the charging status and incoming events, its light is soft and unobtrusive. There is a separate subsection in the menu to adjust its tasks.

Both universal connectors - Micro-USB and an audio output for headphones (3.5 mm) - are located on one bottom end, between them you can see the main microphone hole. The distance between the elements is sufficient so as not to worry if both plugs are simultaneously plugged into their jacks. It is gratifying that Micro-USB here supports the mode of connecting external devices (OTG).

At the top, the space is discharged, there are only the eye of the infrared transmitter and the hole of the second microphone, which serves for noise reduction. The infrared port serves, of course, primarily to emulate the remote control - for this, the smartphone has a preinstalled program called Quick Remote.

There are no plugs on the connectors of the smartphone, since the device is not protected against water and dust. The LG G3 also lacks a strap mount. As for the color variety of the new flagship, this time the Koreans went even further and painted the case in several colors for literally every taste. In Russian translation, their names are as follows: metallic black, silky white, shining gold, moon purple, red burgundy.

Screen

The LG G3 smartphone is equipped with an IPS sensor matrix. The dimensions of the screen are 68 × 121 mm, diagonal - 5.5 inches, resolution - 2560 × 1440 pixels. The display has received an extremely high resolution for a smartphone, called Quad HD. Such a parameter as the density of pixels per inch is equal to 538 ppi here - an unprecedented figure for smartphone displays. The bezels around the screen are quite thin: the developers claim that the display occupies 76% of the front surface of the smartphone.

The brightness of the display can be adjusted manually, or you can use automatic adjustment. The multitouch technology here allows you to process up to 10 simultaneous touches. When you bring the smartphone to your ear, the screen is locked using a proximity sensor.

Alexey Kudryavtsev, editor of the “Monitors” and “Projectors and TV” sections, carried out a detailed examination using measuring instruments. Here is his expert opinion on the screen of the test sample.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are not worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the turned off screens (on the left - Nexus 7, on the right - LG G3, then they can be distinguished by their size):

The screen of the LG G3 is even slightly darker (brightness in the photos is 95 versus 102 for the Nexus 7). The doubling of reflected objects in the LG G3 screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS-type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass-air) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of strong external illumination, but their repair in case of cracked outer glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (very effective, noticeably better than that of the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much more easily, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control and displaying the white field on the whole screen, the maximum brightness value was about 480 cd / m², the minimum - 10 cd / m². The maximum brightness is high, which means, given the good anti-reflective properties of the screen, readability even on a sunny day outdoors should be at an excellent level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. There is an automatic brightness control by the light sensor (it is located to the left of the front speaker slot). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. This function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider. If it is 100%, then in complete darkness, the automatic brightness adjustment function reduces the brightness to 10 cd / m² (dark, but you can read), in an office illuminated with artificial light (about 400 lux) it sets to 250 cd / m² (normal), in a very bright environment (equivalent to bright daylight outdoors, but no direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or slightly more) increases to a maximum of 480 cd / m² (which is what you need). The brightness slider is 50% - the values are as follows: 10, 140 and 480 cd / m², at 0% - 10, 50 and 480 cd / m² (the logic is traced). In general, the automatic brightness adjustment function works adequately. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flickering either.

This smartphone uses an IPS-type matrix. Micrographs (if you look closely) show a typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of photomicrographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift, even with large gaze deviations from the perpendicular to the screen and without tint inversion. For comparison, we present photographs in which the screens of LG G3 and Nexus 7 display the same images, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m2, and the color balance on the camera was forcibly switched to 6500 K. The white field is perpendicular to the screens:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field. And the test picture:

Color reproduction is good and colors are saturated on both screens. However, the saturation in the case of the LG G3 is clearly overestimated. As proof, we present a test photo with a smooth increase in saturation from bottom to top:

The lack of visibility of the horizontal stripes with maximum saturation can determine that on the LG G3 screen saturation is artificially increased (increased color contrast). In addition, in some of the images, you can see that the outline sharpness is also increased to some extent. Apparently, such image processing is performed in software at a very low level, since its result is visible in all tested programs that display raster images. Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens, but the contrast on the LG G3 screen dropped noticeably due to a significant increase in black levels and a decrease in image brightness. And the white box:

The brightness at the angle of the screens decreased (at least five times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but in the case of the LG G3, the brightness decreased a little more. The black field, when deviated along the diagonal, is lightened strongly and acquires a violet or red-violet tint. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is the same for the screens!):

And from a different angle:

With a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the black field is imperfect, since in one corner the black brightness increases noticeably:

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is not the highest - about 750: 1. The response time for the transition black-white-black is 13 ms (7 ms on + 6 ms off). The transition between gray tones of 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes 23 ms in total. The gamma curve, plotted using 32 points at equal intervals in terms of the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal any blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.28, which is slightly higher than the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates little from the power dependence:

This smartphone has a non-switchable dynamic adjustment of the brightness of the backlight in accordance with the nature of the displayed image. However, it seems that the brightness decreases noticeably only when the black field is displayed in full or almost the entire screen, therefore, most likely, the obtained dependence of brightness on hue (gamma curve) approximately corresponds to the gamma curve of a static image. However, just in case, we carried out a number of tests - determining the contrast and response time, comparing the black illumination at angles - when displaying special templates with a constant average brightness, and not single-color fields across the entire screen.

The color gamut is almost equal to sRGB:

Note that a kink at the yellow dot indicates the presence of software image output processing. The spectra show that the matrix light filters mix the components together to a moderate extent:

As a result, visually clear (see note above) colors have natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is slightly above 6500 K, and the deviation from the black body spectrum (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, the color temperature and ΔE vary little from shade to shade - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of the color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance is not very important there, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

Let's summarize. The screen has a high maximum brightness and has good anti-glare properties, so the smartphone can be used outdoors without problems, even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. It is also permissible to use a mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works more or less adequately. The advantages of the screen include a very good oleophobic coating, no flickering and no air gap in the layers of the screen, sRGB color gamut and good color balance. The main disadvantage is the low stability of black to deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen. The presence of non-switchable dynamic adjustment of the brightness of the backlight in accordance with the nature of the displayed image and the artificial increase in saturation and edge clarity, we cannot add to the pluses, but the mass consumer may even like such an improvement in the picture. Therefore, taking into account the importance of characteristics for this particular class of devices, the screen quality can be considered high.

Sound

LG G3 sounds louder than its predecessor, this is achieved due to a powerful speaker (1 W) connected to an amplifier. True, there is only one speaker here, and it is facing in the direction opposite to the user. The sound is really very, very loud, it remains clear in the entire frequency range, but the presence of low frequencies in it is not too noticeable. The sound outlet is located on the rear side, so the sound of the smartphone lying with the screen facing up is muffled as the speaker grill is covered by the table surface. In the conversational dynamics, the voice of a familiar interlocutor, timbre and intonation remain recognizable, making telephone conversations with the help of LG G3 is quite comfortable. In the settings of the standard audio player, it is possible to influence the sound quality using the preset equalizer values.

Camera

LG G3 is equipped with two digital camera modules with a resolution of 13 and 2.1 megapixels. The front camera takes pictures with a resolution of 1920 × 1080, videos in 1080p. For shooting self-portraits, the capabilities of the front camera are more than enough, examples of test shots are presented below.

The main rear 13-megapixel camera is equipped with advanced optical image stabilization (OIS +), but the most interesting thing is that the smartphone also has laser focus. Like professional DSLR cameras, the LG G3 uses this technology to measure the distance between the camera and the subject with a laser beam. It reportedly takes just 0.27 seconds to focus. When shooting in automatic mode, which is set by default, the photos are 4160 × 2240 (10 Mp), and at the maximum resolution the photo size is exactly the same 13 Mp: 4160 × 3120.

The camera control menu has been greatly simplified, although it cannot be said that the camera settings were poorly placed in previous LG smartphones. Previously, such a matrix of visual interactive squares was used, which, in general, was quite intuitive and easy to use. Nevertheless, in the new model, everything has been simplified even more: now there are only two stripes with pictograms, which are drawn smaller and not so clearly distinguishable in the bright sun.

The camera can shoot video in 1080p and UHD (4K) resolution, and there is also the ability to shoot videos in slow motion, which is standard for top smartphones. Those interested can download examples:

 • Movie # 1 (73 MB, 3840 × 2160)
 • Movie # 2 (53 MB, 1920 × 1080)
 • Movie # 3 (39 MB, 1280 × 720, 120 frames per second)

Examples of photos with our comments are presented below.

Excellent sharpness on the car despite being in the shade.

In the background, the foliage merges a little only in the shade.

The noise in the shadows is not very strong and is well handled.

The color of the sky is very even.

Even if there is sharping on the wires, it is invisible. The camera does not do much worse in the shadows than in the light.

The license plates of almost all cars in the picture are clearly visible. The foliage in the background is finely worked out.

In terms of the combination of many parameters, this picture is quite comparable in quality to a good compact camera.

The dynamic range is wide enough, and good light sensitivity allows you to competently work out shadows.

Another example of good sharpness on all shots.

In low light, you can notice the noise reduction, but it is very neat.

Text in daylight room and low light conditions, as well as with flash. In all cases, the camera works well for text, only in the corners the sharpness drops slightly.
Close-up shooting in daylight room and low light, as well as with flash. In all cases, the camera does a good job, perhaps a little worse in low light.

LG, having once learned how to create good cameras (in the LG G2), seems to have decided to slowly hone their skills. Since then, the cameras in her smartphones have turned out to be at least good, and sometimes even very good.

There is a feeling that LG, like Samsung's chief experimenter, also likes to experiment, but it does so carefully and tries not to touch areas where everything is already fine. In the case of the G3 camera, it also did not go without experiments, the main one of which seems to be an attempt to squeeze the maximum out of the 13-megapixel module - it’s interesting to see what it can do, and why go further if the resource has not yet been exhausted?

As a rule, a picture on a smartphone screen looks much sharper than on a regular monitor, and even more so on the LG G3 screen. But, oddly enough, the pictures of the G3 on the monitor do not look much worse and upon closer examination they do not cease to pleasantly surprise.

Foreground and middle shots can almost always be explored in detail. Even in the distant shots, the details do not merge, but are worked out very carefully. The optics are doing well. Sharpness is uniform across the entire field of the frame, and only slightly falls at the edges. The sensor is good at not the most simple moments, and the program helps it a lot. Sometimes, looking at the shadows, you can grimace, bumping into a not quite straight line, forgetting that this is a smartphone camera, and not a cool compact. The pictures are so good that the eye starts to notice these little things. In fact, the noise control works perfectly, although some points betray its work. Sharping is practically absent, which is good news and once again confirms the high quality of optics.

Illumination ≈3200 lux. The camera is doing well.

Illumination ≈1400 lux. The situation is not changing.

Lighting ≈130 lux. The situation is still good, although you can already see traces of the noise reduction device.

Illumination ≈130 lux, flash. The flash improves the situation a little.

Lighting<1 люкс. В темноте можно различить лишь контуры предметов.

Lighting<1 люкс, вспышка. В данном случае вспышка и шумодав сработали не очень слаженно, поэтому резкость упала, хотя она вполне могла остаться высокой.

Remembering the dependence of the resolution on the illumination for (unfortunately, we could not plot it on the graph, since it was measured using the old method), we can note that the maximum resolution value dropped slightly, but the value increased significantly in low light conditions. Due to this, the average value slightly increased, and the dependence acquired smoothness and stability, which is so valuable for a good camera: the more gentle the decline is observed with the deterioration of lighting, the better the camera copes. Obtaining such stability consists in honing the existing achievements, which was mentioned above. The flash brings the camera a little, which does not allow reaching the original resolution and works the worse, the worse the lighting.

LG could not ignore the flagships of other manufacturers. Since the camera is good, these chips are more pleasant additions than main trump cards.

The camera uses laser focusing, or rather, a laser autofocus assistant. The principle of its operation is allegedly the following: the smartphone calculates the distance to the object by the difference between the paths of the direct and reflected waves (laser beam), which either allows the camera to significantly narrow the focusing area, or not think at all and just set focus to the calculated distance. The question immediately arises: to which object is the distance calculated? After all, the main purpose of the sensor is fast focusing during fast shooting, under the assumption that the user “took out and photographed”, and did not select the focus point on the display. However, it cannot be said that the benefits of this function are noticeable: even without lasers, current smartphones focus quickly enough. It's difficult to measure this, but if you recall Samsung's assurances that the Galaxy S5 camera focuses in 0.3 seconds without any lasers, then 0.27 seconds for LG does not look so impressive.

The second feature is the "Magic Focus" mode. In it, the camera takes five shots with focusing on different plans, after which you can select the desired plan and save the picture. Other shots in this shot will be slightly blurred. The function works a little oddly, as the focus does not always fall on the desired subject. If all this is done just for the sake of blurring the background, then it is not clear why the camera does not catch the desired object. If this is some semblance of the function "shoot now - focus later", then its implementation is far from ideal, because, again, out of five plans, you can not find a single one you need.

In any case, all these features are intended only to emphasize the main thing - the quality of the images. And since everything is good with the quality of the camera, then it doesn't need any chips. Either way, the LG G3 is a good fit for most shooting scenarios.

Telephone part and communications

The smartphone works as standard in modern 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA networks, and it also supports the fourth generation (LTE) networks used in Russia. With the SIM-card of the domestic operator Megafon, the smartphone in practice confidently finds and works with the LTE network. Additional network capabilities include support for the second Wi-Fi band (5 GHz) and NFC technology. The mode of connecting external devices (USB Host, OTG) is supported here, so that any flash drives connected to the Micro-USB port, as well as mice with keyboards, are perfectly recognized. The navigation module supports both GPS and domestic Glonass and works very clearly and quickly. Spontaneous reboots / shutdowns during testing were not observed, as well as slowdowns or freezes of the system.

The screen is large, so the drawing of letters and numbers of virtual keyboards is quite comfortable to operate. The layout and location of the buttons are standard: here you can switch languages by pressing a special button, there is a dedicated top row with numbers - you don't have to switch the layout every time. The phone application supports Smart Dial, that is, when dialing a phone number, a search is immediately carried out by the first letters in contacts. It is possible to move the virtual keyboard closer to any of the edges of the screen for ease of typing with one hand. Naturally, there is also a variant of continuous writing by sliding your finger from letter to letter (Swype), here it is called Path input.

The company went even further and added more unusual options for customizing the virtual keyboard, up to changing the height of the buttons or even reassigning them yourself. The developers promise that the adaptive technology of the LG G3 keyboard remembers the typing features of a particular user and contributes to faster typing and fewer errors. The smart keyboard cuts errors by 75 percent by analyzing the accuracy of your fingers hitting letters. Key buttons can also be enlarged for even faster entry of frequently used characters and higher typing accuracy. It also became much easier to adjust the position of the cursor in already typed text by holding the space for a long time.

OS and software

The operating system is the version of the Google Android 4.4.2 KitKat software platform, on top of which is traditionally installed its own proprietary graphical user interface - the successor to Optimus UI. The updated interface has got minimalistic flat graphics, icons and icons do not have shadows, the interface looks unburdened by additional graphic effects, which makes it easier to perceive. In this regard, the changes are most noticeable in the example of the notification drop-down menu, which has become suspiciously reminiscent of the new Apple iOS graphics for the iPhone.

In general, the updated user interface of the LG G3 has incorporated all the many developments that have already been implemented in the previous versions of the proprietary shell. QSlide mode allows you to make working windows smaller, detach them by moving them around the screen, as well as change their transparency and number, and Dual Window splits the screen into two desktops for multitasking. QSlide can be activated from the notification menu, and the dual-window mode is enabled from the menu of the last running programs - there is an additional second tab, in Russian called the Dual Window. The infrared port is supplemented with a special program for remote control of household appliances. The smartphone also has numerous gesture control capabilities.

Even more attention is paid this time to the issue of security. The smartphone offers a whole range of functions, such as the already well-known Knock Code and guest mode, and the Content Lock system has also appeared, which keeps personal data protected and hidden from prying eyes when sharing the LG G3 smartphone. When connected to a computer, Content Lock prevents viewing of protected files, thus keeping the data safe. Protected files can be located either on the G3's internal memory or on a microSD card. With the help of the Kill Switch function, it is possible to remotely lock the smartphone in case of theft. Kill Switch also allows you to remotely erase personal information stored on the LG G3. The program also includes scanning for viruses.

Performance

Like the latest flagships Samsung, HTC and Sony, the LG G3 hardware platform is based on the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC with four Krait 400 cores. Recall that the new platform has the functionality of the Snapdragon 800 with a slightly higher frequency of processor cores: Snapdragon The 801 can operate at frequencies up to 2.46 GHz, while the core frequency of the previous version of the chip was limited to 2.36 GHz. However, smartphones Sony Xperia Z2 and HTC One (M8) use not the most powerful modification of this platform (MSM8974AB), where the maximum frequency of processor cores is only 2.3 GHz. This is less than the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the hero of today's review, the LG G3 smartphone - these devices have the frequency of processor cores reaching a maximum value of 2.46 GHz. This is explained by the fact that it uses a more advanced version of Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 (MSM8974AC). Unlike the MSM8974AB version, the GPU frequency is also higher here: it is equal to 578 MHz (550 MHz for the MSM8974AB). Thus, of the four freshest new products presented on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 platform by top manufacturers, only Korean Samsung and LG devices operate on the maximum version of this platform - the other two, Sony Xperia Z2 and HTC One (M8), are equipped with a slightly less powerful version.

The processor is supported in graphics processing by the same Adreno 330 video accelerator. Less than 11 GB out of 16 GB are initially available for the user's needs. The amount of RAM of the smartphone is 2 GB, but in the future, a modification with a larger amount of memory (3 GB of RAM and 32 built-in flash array) should go on sale. MicroSD memory cards in this model are supported up to 128 GB, you can also connect flash drives to the Micro-USB port using a special adapter in OTG mode.

To get an idea of the performance of the platform of the tested smartphone, we will conduct a standard set of tests (at this point, it should be noted right away that one of the most visual and close to real operating conditions benchmark MobileXPRT, our test subject, unfortunately, flatly refused to pass, no matter how many attempts we tried undertaken).

All the results obtained by us when testing the smartphone in the latest versions of popular benchmarks, we summarized for convenience in tables. Several other devices from various segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions of benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the obtained dry numbers). Unfortunately, within the framework of one comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions of benchmarks, therefore, many worthy and relevant models remain "behind the scenes" - due to the fact that they once passed the "obstacle course" on previous versions of test programs.

Testing in MobileXPRT, as well as in the latest versions of AnTuTu 4.x and GeekBench 3:

The test results showed that despite the extremely high screen resolution, which is certainly one of the most stressing factors on the system, the LG G3 smartphone nevertheless demonstrated almost the same performance as the rest of its colleagues, which operate at a lower resolution. displays. All four newest top-end smartphones are approximately equal in performance, the difference lies within the margin of error - especially when you consider that now we are talking about such high results that all other smartphones are simply inaccessible. So in any case, we are now talking about the LG G3 and other new products on the Snapdragon 801 as the most powerful smartphones, the hardware performance of which will be enough for a long time to perform any possible tasks.

When testing in 3DMark for the highest performing smartphones, it is now possible to run the application in Unlimited mode, where the rendering resolution is fixed at 720p and VSync is disabled (which can cause the speed to rise above 60 fps).

The results of testing the graphics subsystem in the gaming test Epic Citadel, as well as Basemark X and Bonsai Benchmark:

Browser cross-platform tests:

As for benchmarks for evaluating the speed of the javascript engine, you should always make allowances for the fact that the results in them significantly depend on the browser in which they are launched, so that the comparison can be truly correct only on the same OS and browsers, and this possibility is available when testing not always. In the case of Android OS, we always try to use Google Chrome.

Video playback

To test the "omnivorous" video playback (including support for various codecs, containers and special features, such as subtitles), we used the most common formats, which make up the bulk of the content available on the Web. Note that for mobile devices it is important to have support for hardware video decoding at the chip level, since it is often impossible to process modern versions using processor cores alone. Also, do not expect a mobile device to decode everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it.

LG is once again pleasantly surprised by the full support of all necessary decoders in its smartphones. Unlike most of the reviewed devices from other companies, the capabilities of the built-in video player here were enough for smooth playback of all our standard test clips. At the same time, there were no problems with sound either, and in a third-party MX player you don't even have to switch to hardware playback in the Hardware +... That is, in simple terms, the LG G3 will play any video downloaded from the network without any problems.

This smartphone has support for SlimPort (or Mobility DisplayPort) adapters that connect to the Micro-USB connector and provide video (and sound) transmission to external display devices. For testing we used a monitor LG IPS237L ... When using this monitor and our existing SlimPort adapter, the output was carried out at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels at 60 fps. In landscape orientation of the smartphone, the display of the image on the screens of the smartphone and the monitor is carried out, if possible, in landscape orientation (the exception is the start screen), while the image on the monitor is inscribed in the boundaries of the screen and is an interpolated copy of the smartphone screen.

When the smartphone is in portrait orientation, the image is displayed on the monitor screen in portrait orientation, while the image on the monitor is inscribed in height, and wide black fields are displayed on the left and right of the monitor screen.

Sound via HDMI is output (in this case, the sounds were heard through the headphones connected to the monitor, since there are no speakers in the monitor itself) and is of good quality. At the same time, multimedia sounds are not output through the loudspeaker of the smartphone itself, and the volume is controlled by buttons on the smartphone body. The smartphone connected to the SlimPort adapter is being charged, and the adapter must be connected to a power source through its existing Micro-USB connector.

The video output deserves a special description. To begin with, using a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see "Testing methods for video playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)"), we checked how the video is displayed on the smartphone screen. Screenshots with an exposure of 1 s helped to determine the frame output of video files with various parameters: the resolution was 1280 by 720 (720p), 1920 by 1080 (1080p) and 3840 by 2160 (4K) pixels and the frame rate was 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps. In this test we used the MX Player video player in Hardware + mode. The results of this (block entitled "Smartphone Screen") and the following test are tabulated:

The marks indicate possible problems with the playback of the respective files.

According to the criterion for outputting frames, the quality of video playback on the screen of the smartphone itself is very high, since frames (or groups of frames) can be displayed with a more or less uniform alternation of intervals and without frame drops. The smartphone can even display 4K files up to and including 30p. Based on the test shots, the refresh rate of the LG G3's screen when displaying full-screen video may change according to the video frame rate. However, uniform frame interleaving is a relatively unstable state, since some external and internal background processes lead to periodic failure of the correct interleaving of intervals between frames. When playing video files with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 (1080p) on a smartphone screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly on the edge of the screen, however, on the test worlds it can be seen that the clarity is slightly reduced due to interpolation to the screen resolution. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - all shades are displayed in shadows and highlights.

With a monitor connected via SlimPort, during video playback with a standard player, the video file is displayed only in landscape orientation, while only the video file is displayed on the monitor (the translucent navigation bar is removed after a few seconds), and only information elements and virtual controls are displayed on the smartphone screen:

When playing video files with a resolution of Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) on the monitor screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly along the edge of the screen, maintaining the true proportions, and the resolution corresponds to the Full HD resolution. The brightness range displayed on the monitor is equal to the standard range of 16-235, that is, all shades are displayed in the shadows and highlights. The results of the monitor output tests are shown in the table above in the "SlimPort (monitor output)" block. The output quality is very good.

It turns out that the connection to external monitors, TVs and projectors, carried out using the SlimPort adapter, can be used for games, watching movies (including in Full HD resolution), displaying web pages and other activities that benefit from multiple size increases screen.

Battery life

The lithium-polymer battery installed in the LG G3 turned out to be slightly smaller in volume than the Sony flagship, but the device is ahead of all other competitors in this matter. It is all the more necessary for him, since the smartphone has to deal with the highest screen resolution for today, and in terms of area, the LG G3 display is one of the largest. In principle, the developers promise that a specially developed new type of battery, in the cathode of which the metal is replaced by graphite, should fully compensate for the increased energy consumption due to the presence of a Quad HD screen - a separate division of the company, LG Chem, is responsible for the batteries.

However, all this has remained promises so far, and compared to competitors, the new flagship of the Koreans still demonstrated a shorter battery life in the same comparative tests.

Continuous reading in the FBReader program (with a standard, light theme) at the minimum comfortable brightness level (the brightness was set to 100 cd / m2) lasted 9 hours until the battery was fully discharged, and when continuously watching YouTube videos in high quality (HQ) The device lasted 7 hours with the same brightness level through the home Wi-Fi network. In 3D games mode, the smartphone worked for less than three hours, after which it signaled the need to charge. By the way, under heavy loads, a rather strong heating of the rear wall of the case is observed. Perhaps, with the release of new firmware, the smartphone will be able to demonstrate better autonomy, but so far this is the state of affairs.

Outcome

As for the cost of new items in our market, the price has not yet been officially announced, however, some large retail chains have already opened a pre-order for the LG G3 smartphone at a price of 30 thousand rubles. In principle, there are no revelations in this, we are already accustomed to the fact that top manufacturers play on the market according to the same rules, and all competitors put up their flagship solutions in the new season at this price.

With regard to the capabilities of the smartphone described today, only the most advanced models on the market, such as the Samsung Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z2 and HTC One (M8), are the most powerful devices with top-end characteristics. Each of them has its own advantages over competitors, but there are also weaknesses. LG's flagship boasts, first of all, a screen with an unprecedented resolution (for ordinary smartphones), as well as a good camera with improved optical stabilization and laser focusing. A nice looking and well-designed user interface can also be added to the assets of this model. The removable battery and support for memory cards are certainly commendable.

However, we can cite some disadvantages of the LG G3, albeit relative: lack of protection against water, weak autonomy, noticeably increased in size, and also a rather rough design body without any special frills, the presence of a single speaker, albeit loud, but still inferior in sound quality to HTC stereo speakers. Of course, we will not write down the lack of a fingerprint scanner and a blood pressure meter as a disadvantage, bearing in mind how poorly this element was organized by the Samsung flagship. Rather, it is a plus that the device is not overloaded with unnecessary elements that are needed just for show. But the aforementioned waterproofing of a modern smartphone would still not hurt ...

Nevertheless, the device turned out to be very interesting, quite worthy of its competitors, but it's a pity that LG, having confidently entered the number of manufacturers of smartphones of the first magnitude, has stopped using such an important lever as a low price in promotion. Now, for the user, the choice between the described flagship devices is mainly determined by the emotional preference of a particular brand, because all the top new items not only came out quite worthy of each other, but are also sold at the same price. The previous flagship of the company, LG G2, was initially offered at a better price than competing solutions, but now this gap is completely leveled.

Competition in the mobile market is truly like the battle of the titans. Every year, established industry leaders release new and updated gadgets, thereby delivering virtual blows to their rivals. An uncompromising struggle for the minds of potential buyers flares up with unprecedented force. To stay visible and win, manufacturers simply have to implement advanced technologies. LG has confidently chosen such a difficult and thorny path of innovation. Serious confirmation of this is its new flagship smartphone LgG3 ... South Korean engineers have done a tremendous job and equipped the device with a unique 5.5-inch Quad HD display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, which is unique in its class.

After the grand presentation of LG G3 Day Kyiv, which took place on June 19 at the Kiev Hilton hotel, the LG G3 smartphone left an unforgettable impression. This device caught our attention not only with its beautiful design, but also with its powerful hardware platform. Unfortunately, the rhythm of the presentation, like any other mass event, simply does not allow time for a thorough review, let alone testing. But we didn’t give up hope. And now, after a while, the LG G3 smartphone finally got into our test laboratory, where we can slowly and more carefully continue our acquaintance, the results of which read on.

Delivery and equipment

The LG G3 smartphone comes in a relatively large and rather stylish box. It is made of thick cardboard and has an attractive, minimalistic design.

The removable top has beveled sides and is painted in high-gloss silver, which is a pretty attractive solution. It also features several emblems with interesting information and a corporate logo. For example, one of them informs us that LG has become the winner in the Most Innovative Device Manufacturer of the Year nomination according to the prestigious Global Mobile Awards 2014. The reverse side of the box is made in a pleasant coffee color and is a little more informative. , compared to the top. In addition to the technical characteristics of the device, here you can find pictograms with a list of proprietary functions that the South Korean manufacturer has equipped its flagship smartphone with.

The LG G3 came to our cozy test lab in the form of a pre-sale version. This is evidenced by the lack of a complete set: only the smartphone itself with a factory film and a short user guide. However, it is worth noting that a potential buyer, in addition to the above, will also receive a charger and a USB cable. Such a "gentleman's" set is the minimum necessary for a comfortable start to work with a smartphone.

Appearance, arrangement of elements

After the first acquaintance with LG G3, you understand what a huge amount of work done by the designers of the South Korean company. Compared to its predecessor, the novelty has radically changed in appearance, which, no doubt, went to her advantage. The result of hard work is a completely new design concept called "Floating Arc", which looks very fresh and very attractive.

Its characteristic features are the presence of ergonomic curves, which can be seen on the sides and back of the device, as well as the use of the thinnest contours around the display, which makes the smartphone sophisticated and lightweight.

And this is not surprising, since the dimensions of these very contours are a record 8.5 mm at the top, 12 mm at the bottom and about 2 mm on the sides of the screen. Thanks to this, a relatively large smartphone with a 5.5-inch display looks quite compact, which qualitatively sets it apart from direct competitors.

With dimensions of 138.5 x 70.9 x 9.1 mm and a weight of 149 g, the device fits comfortably in the hand, and work with it does not cause any difficulties. This is greatly facilitated by the proprietary feature in the form of the Rear Key. Thanks to its convenient location, it is always under the index finger and allows you to operate the device with just one hand.

The front panel of the device is almost completely (76%) covered with protective Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with an excellent oleophobic and anti-reflective coating. The display of the device is surrounded by a small (only 0.5 mm) plastic insert, which, in addition to decorative purposes, serves as additional protection against damage.

Above the screen are: a front camera, proximity and lighting sensors, an LED indicator and a hole for the earpiece. Below the display there is only a small inset with a concentric pattern and the manufacturer's logo.

On the top of the smartphone there is a microphone and an IR transmitter that allows you to control any multimedia and household appliances in the house. At the bottom are located: micro-USB 2.0 connector, audio mini-jack 3.5 mm and a second microphone.

The side faces of the device are free of any connectors and elements.

The back side of LG G3 is made of high-quality plastic with a textured imitation of metal. Despite the typical grinding, after which the back surface of the device becomes rather slippery, holding the smartphone in your hands is not difficult.

Above, in the center of the rear side, is the main camera lens, flanked by a two-section LED flash and an innovative laser focusing module. The manufacturer's logo is applied below them. In the lower left corner is the multimedia speaker grill.

Compared to its predecessor, the back of the LG G3 is equipped with a removable cover. Fortunately, the developers took into account the previous experience and carefully considered the wishes of their customers.

Now there is a removable battery under the cover, and there are also two slots for cards: micro-SIM and microSD. Additionally, it houses an NFC module, with which the smartphone can exchange data over an encrypted channel, and a wireless induction charging module, which allows you to recharge the device's battery from a special docking station without additional wires.

Very good build quality deserves special attention. Traditionally for LG it is at the highest level. The body of the smartphone has remarkable rigidity: there is not the slightest hint of backlash or gaps. At moderate pressure, the geometry of the device cannot be changed, and the image on the display remains without streaks or other possible artifacts. All in all, the LG G3 leaves the impression of a solid and high quality device.

Without a doubt, the main highlight of the flagship smartphone LG G3 is its magnificent 5.5-inch display, which is based on a high-quality IPS-matrix with a stunning Quad HD-resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels). At the same time, the pixel density is a record 538 ppi.

The screen has excellent color reproduction, good contrast and excellent viewing angles (without any inversions or offsets). The very good white balance is especially worth noting: it looks very natural and does not go into warm or cold shades, as is often the case in more affordable devices. The backlight brightness of the screen is also at a qualitatively high level and has a good range of adjustment. This allows you to easily use your smartphone both on a bright sunny day and in complete darkness.

Corning Gorilla Glass 3 tempered glass is responsible for the safety and integrity of the display, which has an excellent oleophobic and anti-reflective coating. Thanks to this, there are practically no fingerprints on the screen, and those that appear are easily removed.

The built-in touchscreen substrate of the display supports recognition of up to 10 simultaneous touches. Moreover, their processing is carried out without any complaints. The screen responds clearly and instantly even to the slightest touch. Sliding your finger over the protective glass is very light and quite pleasant. It does not cause any discomfort. Also, not superfluous for our climatic conditions is the support of the display in the increased sensitivity mode, which allows you to interact with it while wearing thin gloves.

LG engineers can rightfully be proud of their device, since a display with such characteristics has not been used before in any of the smartphones. The qualitative difference between the new Quad HD resolution and the Full HD resolution on the market is undeniable and striking. This is especially true when working with fonts or when viewing high quality photos and videos. The detail of the image is simply amazing, since individual pixels can be distinguished only with the help of special equipment. Perhaps the only obstacle to digital happiness may be the lack of adequate data. It's no secret that not all mobile content is 720p, let alone the latest 4K Ultra HD. But we believe that a display of this format is a good start for the future, and all its hidden potential can be used after a short period of time.

LG G3 has a good multimedia speaker. Unlike its predecessor LG G2, it is located on the back of the case, in the lower left corner. Despite its compact size, it is loud enough and makes a pretty good impression. According to the manufacturer, the speaker has a power of 1 W, and through the built-in amplifier, this figure can be increased to 1.5 W. The sound is clear enough without noticeable distortion. There are well-defined highs and mids. Low frequencies are almost absent, which is not surprising given the device form factor. The smartphone can be safely used for games, watching videos and other needs without additional devices.

However, for music lovers, we still recommend using high-quality headphones, since traditionally a good mobile amplifier is present in the new product for LG flagship smartphones. In addition, without additional settings, it provides music playback in Hi-Fi format, and the built-in equalizer has a special profile for headphones - "LG QuadBeat". All this makes the sound very pleasant, adding depth and volume.

The quality of the earpiece is also good. It is moderately loud and provides a pleasant and rather "live" sound transmission.

Camera

As befits a flagship model, the LG G3 is equipped with two digital cameras. In our case, the engineers of the South Korean company made an uncompromising decision and equipped their brainchild with the proven modules of the Sony Exmor RS series, which are among the best in their class.

The main camera of the device is represented by the Sony IMX135 module (1.2 μm, 1 / 3.06 ") with a resolution of 13 megapixels and an aperture of f / 2.3. It is capable of taking pictures with a maximum resolution of 4160 x 3120 pixels at a ratio of 4: 3 and 4160 x 2340 dots at a ratio of 16: 9. The resulting photos delight with excellent color reproduction with natural color saturation, good contrast and excellent image detail. They can be considered among the best among top-class smartphones. Also, traditionally there is a good implementation of HDR photography mode.

Separately, it is worth noting the presence of a unique (first used in a smartphone) laser autofocus with a 9-point focusing area, which was previously only found in professional cameras. This solution allows you to make high-quality photo and video materials in any weather conditions and at any degree of illumination. The camera lag time, which at the time of shooting is a record 0.267 seconds, can be considered quite impressive. In addition, the smartphone is equipped with an advanced optical image stabilization system OIS + and a two-section LED dual-light flash (with warmer and colder LEDs), which have a very beneficial effect on the quality of the captured images.

The only thing that can be found fault with is the algorithm of the main camera, which, in particularly difficult shooting conditions, tries to set the exposure level slightly higher than required. And also optics with an external sapphire lens with a light purple coating, which gives the picture a subtle purple tint when a bright light source, such as the sun, is close to the edges of the frame. But this has more to do with the photographer and his ability to choose the correct angle and location than the properties of the camera itself.

All the positive aspects of photography also apply to video shooting. The main camera of the smartphone is capable of video recording not only in the already familiar Full HD resolution, but also in the latest 4K Ultra HD, which is an impressive 3840 x 2160 pixels. There is also a (now fashionable) slow motion mode with a speed of 120 frames per second. Since Apple, more and more manufacturers are adding this capability to their flagship devices. However, in our case, such a mode cannot boast of high image quality and serves more to attract buyers in the form of a good marketing ploy. As for the rest, the level of the recorded video is at its best and does not cause any significant complaints.

As for the recorded sound, it should be noted a rather aggressive noise reduction system and high sensitivity of the microphones themselves. However, in general, its quality remains at a high level.

The front camera of the smartphone is also represented by a fairly good module - Sony IMX208 (1.4 micron, 1/6 ") with a resolution of 2.1 megapixels and an aperture of f / 2.0. Despite the fixed focus, it is capable of providing a fairly high image quality and producing photos and video shooting with a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. Also, the camera has a good automatic retouching mode and it can be safely used not only for all kinds of web conferences, but also for taking selfies that are fashionable today.

The proprietary software responsible for the operation of the cameras has a pleasant appearance and has an intuitive interface. Its clear advantages include the fast shooting function, which is reproduced with just one light touch of the display.

It is also worth noting that the presence of a "smart" and fairly convenient front camera mode, which greatly facilitates the process of shooting self-portraits. It looks something like this: the camera tracks the position of the user's palm and, after squeezing it into a cam, starts a 5-second countdown, after which the photo is taken.

However, the total number of useful functions, compared to its predecessor LG G2, has been greatly reduced, leaving only the most basic (according to the developers). Unfortunately, there is no longer an option to select the white balance, adjust the exposure, change the ISO value, set the focus type and correct a number of other useful settings, which will be a very sad fact for an experienced user. However, there is hope that with a software update, these and other necessary functions will definitely be brought back.

This symbiosis traditionally offers excellent functionality and a fairly extensive set of features that will not leave indifferent most users. In addition, LG is going to provide an update to Android Lemon Meringue Pie (Android 5.0) as soon as possible, of course after its official release.

Based on current trends in the mobile industry, the developers have significantly simplified the design of the operating system, making it simple and minimalistic, in perfectly matched pastel colors. Such a cardinal solution, compared to the bright and colorful interface of the LG G2, looks like a breath of fresh air. Subjectively, this takes the design of the operating system to a whole new level, making it more stylish and pleasing to the eye. The same opinion is shared by members of the jury of the prestigious Red Dot Awards 2014, in which the South Korean company received 9 awards, one of which was for a simple and intuitive user interface.

The functionality of the operating system can be described as quite rich, with a wide level of capabilities. At the same time, it is not overflowing with unnecessary functions, which in real conditions, in most cases, will rarely be in demand. Among the innovations, it is worth noting beautiful animation and pleasant sound design. Compared to its predecessor, this is a qualitative step forward.

Keeping a close eye on the latest trends in health, the developers have added a good fitness assistant LG Health to their flagship smartphone. Such a useful application quite accurately fulfills the counting of the owner's steps and tracks the movement route.

Special attention should be paid to the Smart Notice function, which, as it were, imitates the communication of a smartphone with a user through floating notifications. This is very convenient, since you can quickly get information about the weather, missed calls and other data. In our opinion, this is a very useful innovation.

The proprietary function KnockON, already familiar to many users, remained in place. With it, you can easily unlock your smartphone by double-tapping the screen. In addition to it, an improved variation of KnockCode has appeared, which allows you to protect your smartphone from unlocking with a special combination of taps. To do this, the device screen is divided into four parts, and the user is given the opportunity to choose the sequence in which the display will be pressed and in which quadrant. It is almost impossible to guess such a password at random, since under such blocking conditions there are more than 80,000 possible combinations. This solution is a good alternative to the fingerprint scanner, which some competitors have.

Also pay attention to the KillSwitch function. If you have lost your smartphone (or become a victim of a thief) and do not want your personal data to become public, it is enough to send a remote command that will destroy all information on the device and turn a modern gadget into a useless brick.

The developers did a good job, not only adding a number of new features, but also qualitatively updating the existing ones. So, many gesture actions, the ability to control the device with one hand, an excellent quickmemo + note-taking application, the ability to work simultaneously with two large applications, as well as with small programs of the QSlide set, have not disappeared anywhere.

Thanks to the infrared port, the novelty turns into a remote control for all multimedia and household appliances that are in the house. As we can see, the functionality of the smartphone is gradually going beyond the usual understanding, acquiring new opportunities.

The system settings menu has a wide range of items. They are all well-sorted and arranged so that they are easy to remember and quick to find. For ease of use, they can be displayed in two modes: split into tabs or one list.

Finally, it should be said that the interface works very smoothly and quickly, and interaction with it occurs at an intuitive level, evoking only positive emotions.

Hardware platform and performance

At the heart of the flagship smartphone LG G3 is one of the most powerful processors - Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, which is presented in its maximum configuration (model MSM8974PRO-AC). It features 4 Krait 400 cores with operating clocks ranging from 300 MHz to 2.46 GHz and 2 MB L2 cache. The CPU is manufactured using a state of the art 28nm HPm process technology. The role of the graphics accelerator is played by the Qualcomm Adreno 330 adapter, with an operating clock frequency of 578 MHz and support for OpenGL ES 3.0, OpenVG 1.1, OpenCL 1.2 and DirectX 9.0c.

It is important to note that there are two versions of the LG G3 on the market. The first version, which came to us for testing, has 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory, of which 11.2 GB is available to the user. The second option is characterized by an increased amount of memory: 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. Both versions of the smartphone have support for microSD memory cards up to 128 GB.

Despite the significantly increased display resolution and the use of a more productive processor, the overall performance level of the device in synthetic tests is only slightly higher than that of last year's LG G2. Nevertheless, in real conditions, the capabilities of the LG G3 are more than enough to perform almost any task, including for running modern games, since most of them are not yet optimized for Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixels) and are executed in resolutions 1080p and 720p upscaled. For example, with such rather demanding games as Dead Trigger 2 and Asphalt 8: Airborne, the smartphone handles with ease, while delivering a high-quality picture and a high frame rate. However, for GTA: San Andreas, with high graphics settings and Modern Combat 5: Blackout, the performance starts to lack a little, due to which minor slowdowns become noticeable.

But, as you know, you have to pay for everything good. In our case, the heating of the case became the Achilles' heel of the device. Unfortunately, it is quite high, which presents certain inconveniences during operation. The smartphone heats up in many resource-intensive situations, not only when starting games, but also during shooting from a camera, as well as watching a "heavy" video. In such cases, the back of the device becomes noticeably hot, especially the metal power button, and holding the device causes some discomfort.

Communication and communications

As a prominent representative of leading flagship devices, the tested novelty is able to work with all modern mobile networks: 2G, 3G and, of course, 4G with LTE Cat.4 support.

This smartphone model is equipped with a radio module that supports one SIM card. The quality of voice transmission was at a high level: there were no interruptions or self-dropping. But it should be borne in mind that this largely depends on the carrier used.

The set of communication capabilities is represented by NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac modules. The latter has support for Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi Hotspot and is capable of operating in two frequency bands: 2.4 and 5 GHz. Also traditionally there is DLNA support.

Wi-Fi data transfer speed (wired connection 100 Mbps, router supporting 802.11n) shows good results: up to 44 Mbps for receiving and up to 38 Mbps for sending. Finding points and connecting to them is very fast, and the established connection has good stability.

As noted above, the LG G3 smartphone is equipped with a removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery. Compared to its predecessor LG G2, in which the battery was an integral part of the device, this allows, avoiding additional costs, to quickly replace a faulty battery without calling for service. In an especially extreme mode of using a smartphone, to increase its "survivability", you can carry an additional, already pre-charged battery with you. With an average load during everyday tasks, the battery capacity is enough for about a day and a half of battery life. Considering the size of the screen and the power of the hardware platform, the numbers are pretty good.

More detailed testing showed the following results. While watching HD video at 50% display brightness and enabled Wi-Fi and GPS modules, the device worked for 11 hours. In the case of gaming simulation using Epic Citadel (Guided Tour mode), the device lasted almost 2.5 hours with 100% display brightness and enabled Wi-Fi and GPS modules. Estimated battery life according to the GFXBench benchmark is 193 minutes. It takes approximately 3 hours to fully charge the battery (from USB 2.0 connector).

Outcome

After a rather detailed acquaintance and testing of the flagship smartphone LG G3 several very important conclusions can be drawn. First, LG is rightfully considered one of the leaders in the mobile device market, as it boldly introduces advanced technologies into its new products. Second, LG respects its users and treats their opinions with due attention.

The very pleasant impression that remained after acquaintance with the LG G3 smartphone at the presentation of LG G3 Day Kyiv has not disappeared anywhere, but only intensified several times. The colossal work of engineers and designers of the South Korean company was not in vain. Before us is a bright representative of a new generation of mobile devices, which has incorporated all the advanced developments in the field of mobile technologies.

In addition to its elegant appearance, the LG G3 smartphone has a powerful hardware platform that will satisfy even the wildest dreams of a discerning user. The duo of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and the Qualcomm Adreno 330 graphics adapter can bring even the most demanding modern game to its knees. A high-quality 13-megapixel main camera module with a unique laser autofocus will not leave indifferent not only an amateur photographer, but also pleasantly surprise a professional. And support for memory cards up to 128 GB will allow you to show off your captured collection in front of everyone, anytime, anywhere. But the most striking element in the new smartphone from LG is a gorgeous 5.5-inch display with a stunning Quad HD resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels) and a record pixel density of 538 ppi. Such a screen, no doubt, raises the bar of quality to an unprecedented height until now.

Perhaps the only unpleasant moment in the new product is the heating of the case. But let's be honest and frank to the end. With the declared technical characteristics and high level of performance, the problem of temperature conditions is an insignificantly small fee.

The rest of the flagship smartphone LG G3 can be safely recommended for purchase to all lovers of uncompromising power and the latest technologies.

LG G2 - last year's flagship manufacturer has become a real boon for many. In it, the company managed to combine stylish design, advanced features and a comfortable shell, which, oddly enough, has not received any name. Of course, there were negative aspects, but they were so insignificant that you simply do not notice them. While reviewing the LG G3 32gb dual, we noticed that the new flagship has all the advantages of the previous model, but its capabilities have been greatly improved. The manufacturer managed to create an optimal device that can meet the needs of a wide variety of users. We recommend reading the LG G3 d724 review and specifications to find out about all the advantages and disadvantages of the new model.

We have the following scope of delivery: documentation, charger, microUSB-cable and the device itself.

LG G3 design

In our opinion, the design of the device turned out to be very standard, it does not have any bright features that attract attention and delight. The only advantage is the metal-style back cover. Despite the banality of the design, the device lies perfectly in the hand. A smartphone cannot be called a freak, but it does not cause any emotions either. Quite a standard gadget, but its main advantages lie inside. During the review and specifications of the LG G3 d855, we drew attention to the variety of colors of the back cover. It can be made in matte black, silk white, pink, as well as golden and light purple. As you can see, rare and very bright shades were chosen for the smartphone.

It is already customary for the manufacturer to use plastic to create flagship models, but the brand's specialists are trying to introduce at least some variety. To make the plastic in its appearance resemble metal, a special film with a metallizing structure is glued to its surface. You will not be able to accidentally tear it off, as it is fused into the plastic. The LG G3 d 722 dual lte smartphone review showed that the film does not collect scratches and fingerprints due to its special structure. The lid really looks like a metal one, especially when you look at it from a certain angle.

Build quality LG G3

The manufacturer, unlike most competitors, has installed a removable cover and a battery, but despite this, there is no backlash. The build quality is really top notch. The block with three buttons for controlling the device is made perfectly, there are no complaints about it. Another positive side we would call the absence of a frame between the protective glass and the ends of the phone. Some flagship models have such a gap and collect a lot of dust.

Body dimensions

Contrary to all expectations, the bezels of the LG G3 are even thicker than in the previous model. The new model has turned out to be larger in all respects: taller, wider and thicker. Although now this is not at all surprising, because recently manufacturers have begun to offer devices with a large display in their assortment, and therefore the parameters of the case are also increasing. The rather large dimensions of the device do not affect the comfort of its use. For this, the manufacturer offers interesting software solutions. As an example, you can customize the order of the keys on the bottom touchpad so you don't have to reach for frequently used keys.

Control elements

The main feature of the flagship is the complete absence of keys on the front panel, as well as on the side ends. Three control buttons are installed on the back of the device in the camera area. Initially, the original arrangement of the keys causes inconvenience, but gradually you get used to it. Smartphone LG G3 specifications and price matched perfectly, thanks to which the manufacturer is rapidly increasing its position in the world market.

At the top there is an IrDA port, with which you can control home appliances. Nearby there was a place for an additional microphone.

At the bottom we found a microUSB connector, a headset jack and a main microphone.

The main camera, speaker and control keys are located on the back.

At the top of the front panel there is an earpiece, a light sensor, as well as proximity, an indicator of missed events and a 2.1 megapixel camera lens. The indicator light is capable of displaying several types of events: new messages, system notifications, missed calls and the need to connect to a charger.

Display

Display LG G3 has a diagonal of 5.5 inches. This is a popular format today, in which it is convenient to use the multimedia capabilities of the device. This is one of the first devices with a screen resolution of 2560x1440 pixels. Of course, it will be impossible to see the pixels on such a display. The benefits of the screen don't end there. It has an excellent margin of brightness, which is sufficient even when used in bright sunlight, the viewing angles are ideal.

The picture does not lose the saturation of the hue, even if you tilt the display diagonally. The auto-backlight works quite correctly, but sometimes it works to save energy. In this regard, the brightness level may not be observed as you wish to see. In our opinion, the screen turned out to be just perfect in all respects. On the one hand, it is bright and saturated, but on the other hand, it has a balanced color temperature, so that the eyes do not get tired of prolonged use of the gadget. The LG G3 has very good specs and makes it one of the best flagships of the company.

The display is protected by a protective Gorilla Glass 3 with an oleophobic coating. There are practically no prints left on the screen, but they are also deleted in an instant.

Cameras LG G3

The resolution of the main camera module is 13 megapixels. It is equipped with a two-axis optical stabilization system, laser focusing, and a flash. We were most interested in laser focusing, which works very quickly and accurately. The sensor works in the following way: in a minimum period of time, a large number of rays are sent to the focusing object. Once guided, they are reflected and fed back, after which the system calculates the time it takes for the beams to complete the route. Thus, high pointing accuracy is achieved. The LG G3 camera also has an additional contrast focusing system.

The camera interface looks like this:

The smartphone supports video recording in high quality, as close as possible to 4K (3840x2160 pixels). The next feature is the increased frame rate during shooting - up to 120 fps.

The interface is pretty basic, with one exception. There are two shooting modes - with and without display settings. In the first mode, the device automatically aims at the subject of shooting with each movement of the viewfinder, and shooting is carried out by pressing a key. Manual focus can be performed by tapping on an object in the display. There is also a mode without settings, in which shooting is possible by pressing any point on the display. The camera instantly focuses on the selected area and takes a good picture.

If you are a beginner, it is better to shoot in automatic mode. Then the device will automatically select the optimal parameters depending on the shooting conditions. Pictures in this mode are decent even in low light.

Autonomy LG G3

LG G3 s d724 specifications provide for the use of a battery with a declared capacity of 3000 mAh. The capacity remains unchanged compared to the previous model, while the display is larger, as well as its resolution. Fortunately, the autonomy has remained at a decent level and is not inferior to its predecessor. With average use (several hours of music and surfing the Internet, a couple of hours of calls and text messages), the gadget lasts for a day. In emergencies, you can use the proprietary energy-saving mode, which can be activated when the charge level is less than 30%. When activated, the brightness is reduced and the indicator light, vibration, wireless connections are turned off and the services are automatically synchronized.

Specifications LG G3

Specifications LG G3 are very good, because the device is built on the best platform at the time of release Qualcomm Snapdragon 801. It is a 4-core processor with a frequency of 2.5 GHz. The video accelerator Adreno 330 is responsible for the graphics in games. There are two versions of the model on sale - with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of built-in, as well as 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of built-in. If the built-in memory is not enough for you, then the possibility of installing a memory card is supported.

Performance, test result LG G3

The interface and apps work great, and we didn't find any lags during our testing.

Test result in Antutu (X):

GeekBench 3:

Interface

As a standard, the device is preinstalled with the Android 4.4.2 system with a proprietary shell from the manufacturer. With each new model, the shell becomes more comfortable and functional, but it never got its name, although it definitely deserves it. The shell looks amazing. It is thought out to the smallest detail, and its main advantage is the simplicity of colors and shapes. The interface contains icons without unnecessary details, made in a minimalist style, which is combined with a calm color scheme. If the interface lacked integrity in G2, then everything is fine. The interface is made in the same style, which pleases the eye.

Sound LG G3

The earpiece speaker is simply gorgeous. During a conversation, you can clearly hear the interlocutor, as well as you. The speaker volume is sufficient with a large margin, although there is only one. The volume of the conversational and multimedia speaker is sufficient for comfortable use of the device even in noisy rooms and on the street.

Output

On the Aliexpress website LG G3 with 16 GB of internal memory 2 GB of RAM can be purchased at a price of 9,000 rubles. You can also order a more advanced version if you plan to use the device to its fullest. For this price, it will be difficult to find a more worthy option. The manufacturer has equipped the device with a high-quality display with a high resolution, good cameras, a user-friendly interface and a powerful filling.

Subscribe to our Zen channel, there is still a lot of interesting things waiting for you.

Your rating for a smartphone:

The LG G3 is an interesting flagship from LG with a laser autofocus camera system, which, incidentally, is the first to be used in smartphones. Among the advantages of the device, it is worth noting an extremely clear display with a resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels, one of the highest we have seen! The smartphone, in our opinion, looks nice and well-assembled. There are also unusual details, for example, the control buttons on the back of the device, which seemed to us not such a convenient solution. We were also surprised by the size of the case, despite the 5.5-inch display, its dimensions are more likely to correspond to 5-inch smartphones.

However, the overly high resolution of the display did not have the best effect on the battery life of the LG G3 - the battery runs out quickly. Plastic has been chosen as the material for the LG G3 case, and in order to be on the same wavelength with the Sony Xperia Z2 and Samsung Galaxy S5, it lacks protection from moisture and dust. In our opinion, this is a completely competitive flagship, especially if the manufacturer lowers the price a little, after all, LG G2 differed from other flagships not only in the location of the buttons on the back, but also in a more favorable price.

Where could I buy

Dimensions - 3.9

The dimensions of the LG G3 correspond to modern flagships: a large 5.5-inch diagonal, a tall and wide, but thin body. Top smartphones are constantly increasing diagonals, however, the LG G3 can still be held in one hand, but it is not easy to operate with one hand.

The main material used in LG G3 is plastic, while the back cover is textured for a more noble material. The build quality did not cause any complaints from us. True, at first it seemed to us that the case was non-separable, but it turned out that the back cover was pushed off in a small ledge. Under it are hidden a slot for a micro-SIM and a memory card, as well as a removable battery.

The weight of the model is 156 grams, and the thickness of the convex case reaches 9.8 mm. The LG G3 is thicker and heavier than the LG G2. The smartphone is sold in several colors: black, white, gold, purple and pink.

Screen - 4.4

The LG G3 has a 5.5-inch display. Screen resolution - 2560 × 1440 pixels, extremely clear display (PPI - 534), matrix type - IPS (special advertising name - True HD IPS). The screen is covered with Gorilla Glass 3 and has an oleophobic coating. The display of the smartphone turned out to be one of the best among the flagships we tested: here and a high level of brightness - 467 cd / m2, close to the maximum viewing angles and natural color rendering. In the sun, the display remains readable: photos and even small text look great.

The device has an automatic brightness control that works adequately to lighting conditions. One more interesting feature of the smartphone should be noted - you can turn it on by double tapping on the screen. Unusually, the LG G3 has narrow side bezels to the left and right of the display, a narrow space above the display for sensors and speakers, and a little space with the LG logo below it.

Viewing angles and color deviations of the LG G3. As you can see in the test image from above, the colors of the display practically do not shift, only gray has an unhealthy yellowish tint, and green is frankly yellow and the crimson color "goes away" when you deviate vertically to red. Read more about the test.

Camera

The LG G3 has two cameras, 13 and 2.1 MP. The manufacturer has equipped the camera with an optical stabilization system and laser autofocus, which is used for the first time in smartphones! What is it for? It detects distance and allows you to focus quickly. We tested this feature, the camera is really fast at focusing, but overall it doesn't have a huge impact on shooting speed.

As it should be, the device offers face recognition, LED flash, HDR mode, there is also shooting with a voice command and simultaneous shooting of photos and videos. In addition to laser focus, there is another interesting feature - the "magic focus" mode. In this mode, 5 pictures are taken at once with different focusing, among which you can then select a frame with the desired sharpness.

Photos from the camera LG G3 - 4.7

The maximum photo resolution is 4160 by 3120 pixels. The camera interface looks simple, there are not so many settings. The quality of the photos taken is high, by the standards of smartphones, the photos are sharp and with good detail. The front camera shoots with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and is quite suitable for video communication sessions.

The maximum video resolution is 3840 by 2160 pixels (4K) at 30 fps, it is possible to record video at 120 fps in HD resolution, but, as our tests have shown, the video quality suffers from this. The front camera can shoot video in Full HD resolution.

Working with text - 3.0

The LG G3 has a convenient built-in keyboard. The markup of additional characters is present in the Latin alphabet, but disappears when switching to the Cyrillic alphabet. But there is a separate digital row, fast switching between languages at the touch of a button. A one-handed control function is also available, which boils down to the fact that the keyboard can be moved left or right. In addition, you can adjust the keyboard height, layout and split. There is also support for text input by swiping your finger (Swype).

Internet - 3.0

The LG G3 smartphone comes with a standard Android browser and Google Chrome. The former has a Capture plus function for taking a screenshot of the entire page at once, and the latter supports tab sync with the desktop version of Chrome. Both lack support for multiple page scaling and separate reading mode. However, in the settings, you can manually set the font size and at any time by double-clicking on the page, all the text will be adjusted to the size you selected. You can adjust this parameter for yourself once and not experience unnecessary problems with the text. The standard "Browser" has the Capture plus function - taking a screenshot of the entire web page.

Interfaces

LG G3 supports all common wireless interfaces: dual-band Wi-Fi (802.11 a / b / g / n and high-speed ac), with the ability to distribute the Internet, Bluetooth low energy available, A-GPS with GLONASS support, IR port for control home electronics and NFC chip. There is also support for Russian LTE frequencies. As our tests have shown, all interfaces work fine and without problems. In terms of the presence of connectors, there is nothing unusual - micro USB 2.0 with support for USB OTG and USB Host, in order not only to connect a smartphone to a computer, but also various peripherals to the LG G3. The location of the headphone jack (on the bottom of the device) is a bit surprising, which is both unusual and inconvenient.

Multimedia - 5.0

The LG G3 video player supports many common formats and video codecs (MP4 / DviX / XviD / H.264 / H.263 / WMV), plays excellent video in high quality, up to QHD video (2560 by 1440 pixels). By the way, the manufacturer even added a few QHD clips - the picture looks amazing in our opinion. There is also support for subtitles, both internal and external. The audio player in LG G3 supports popular formats like MP3, WAV and uncompressed FLAC audio.

Battery - 2.8

The smartphone has a 3000 mAh Li-ion battery, the battery is removable. In testing, the device performed well in overall battery life, but less than its direct competitors such as the Sony Xperia Z2 or Samsung Galaxy S5. Although we believe that most users will have enough charge for the LG G3 for a day. The smartphone played HD video at maximum brightness for just under 6 hours. In the mode of listening to music with the screen off, the device was discharged in 55 and a half hours.

Performance - 3.3

The device uses the Qualcomm MSM8975AC Snapdragon 801 platform with a 2.5GHz quad-core processor, Adreno 330 graphics and 2GB of RAM. A model with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory is also available for sale, but at least until it is found in Russian spaces.

As far as the platform is concerned, our tests have shown that it has good hardware. No problems were found with the optimization of the LG G3, and, as expected, the smartphone is fast and smooth. The Qualcomm 801 chipset is one of the top ones today, so it's no surprise that the LG G3 can easily run even "heavy" games and show high scores in benchmarks. For example, in the 3dmark Ice Storm Unlimited test, the smartphone received 16711 points, and in AnTuTu - 30775, which the benchmark estimated as "amazing".

Memory - 3.5

The total amount of internal memory in the LG G3 is limited to 16 GB, 11.2 GB is available to the user. There is also a modification of the smartphone with 32 GB of internal memory. There is a slot for memory cards, cards up to 128 GB are supported. There is no hot swap capability.

Features:

The device uses a proprietary cover from LG. It includes a launcher, keyboard, browser, dialer, SMS client and most other built-in applications. There are Russian letters in the dialer, in the notification curtain there are switches for wireless interfaces. The main feature of the smartphone is the power and volume buttons located on the back of the device. According to LG G3 users, one or two days are enough to get used to it. But the buttons seemed inconvenient to us: we have to bend the index finger unnaturally, and besides, sometimes it seems that the smartphone is about to fall out of the hand.

As already mentioned, the smartphone has laser autofocus to measure the distance between the subject and the camera. From the applications, we can note the presence of a file manager, LG Health application to "monitor health" for workouts, radio (only with a headset), Quick Remote - to control home electronics using the infrared port. Another interesting feature of the smart screen is that the display stays on while the phone recognizes your face.

Competitors

For the summer of 2014, the cost of the model is 26,500 rubles. For this money, you get a full-fledged flagship smartphone with top-end technical characteristics. The LG G3 has several strong competitors - Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One (M8), Sony Xperia Z2.

And the Sony Xperia Z2 is water and dust resistant, built from better materials, and both have better battery test scores. On the side of LG G3 - features like control buttons on the "back" of the case, switching on by double-clicking on the screen and laser autofocus. In addition, the LG G3 features a sharper, ultra-high-resolution display.

On the side there is a comfortable shell, an aluminum case and, perhaps, that's all. The LG G3 wins with its cameras and display. In terms of batteries, smartphones have parity.

Seriously wins in terms of dimensions, as well as design and better case materials. LG G3 has a large screen diagonal, a slot for a memory card, laser autofocus, a simpler system for downloading content (video, music, etc.) in a smartphone, an “omnivorous” video player that supports many formats.
