Essence of the problem: When installing Windows 7 at the last stage (after an error occurs, after a blue screen appears, or after an emergency shutdown), the computer restarts cyclically and the message is displayed:

The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click OK to restart your computer, and then restart the installation.

in English:

The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows click OK to restart the computer and then restart the installation.

Solution:

When this error appears, press the Shift + F10 keys on the keyboard, the command line will start, enter the regedit command, thus starting the registry editor. We are looking for the HKLM \\ System \\ Setup \\ Status \\ ChildCompletion section. The section contains a key called setup.exe. If the key is assigned the value 1, then double-click to change it to 3. Then close the registry editor and restart the computer

  • Forward>
The error sounds like this, - “ The computer restarted unexpectedly, or an unexpected error occurred ... "... It can pop up at any stage of the installation of Windows 10, as well as later versions of operating systems. There are enough reasons for this, for example, a conflict in the hardware, bad BIOS firmware, viruses, problems with the hard disk or potentially dangerous programs that were installed on the PC before, and it will take a lot of time to find them. But, there is one effective method, which we recommend to resort to immediately, and it is written about it in today's article.

The computer is constantly rebooting and an error appears - what should I do?

We want to say right away that when this notification appears, neither the OK button nor the next OS installation will help out here. The message will appear constantly.

Better to do so:

  • As soon as this information is displayed, press the key combination Shift + F10;
  • In the window, enter regedit and press Enter;
  • We go along the way

If the above methods did not work

If the message "The computer restarted unexpectedly, or an unexpected error occurred" continues to "haunt" you, a number of recommendations.

  1. Check your PC for viruses and spyware;
  2. Roll back the system to an earlier date;
  3. Uninstall programs, games that were installed before the problem;
  4. Delete the partition on the hard disk where the OS is installed and recreate;
  5. Check HDD for errors, sectors, etc .;
  6. Try another ISO image of Windows 10;

Sometimes during a clean installation of Windows or upgrading to Windows 10, a user encounters a problem like:

The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click “OK” to restart your computer, and then restart the installation.

The administrator agrees (there is nowhere to go anyway), presses OK and ... the computer restarts again with the same error. And so over and over again. Unfortunately, at this stage, there is very little information about what is happening, and, meanwhile, there are a lot of reasons: from and to hanging in some installed program. At the same time, as practice shows, the installation problem lies in wait for users of any versions of Windows: from 7 to 10. The last time I personally encountered such an error was after processing the next version of Windows through, which means that I needed an extended solution to the problem. Which I will give here.

The computer restarted unexpectedly ...

So what can you do? If the system is capable of displaying dialog boxes, then everything is not so bad, and we will most likely have access to repair utilities from the System32 folder. Try the following solution to the problem: it is not new, it is googled in any language and has been known since time immemorial:

  • during the next attempt to install Windows, we are waiting for a window with an error to appear
    after its appearance we hold down the keys Shift + F10 and go to

  • team in it
regedit.exe

call the registry editor

  • from there we go to the section

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \\ SYSTEM \\ Setup \\ Status \\ ChildCompletion

  • on the right you need to find the parameter setup.exe... Most likely, its value is set in 1 ... If so, change to 3 by double clicking on it:

We have just forced the installation process to jump to another level, skipping an "incomprehensible" error so far

  • you can go to reboot right now from the console window with the command
wpeutil reboot

Try installing / updating Windows again. I'm sure the update or installation process will go smoothly now. If the error repeats or you encounter another (up to the process freezing) - dig in the direction of the hardware components of the computer.

However, in the meantime, I need to get Windows out of this mode and exclude the error from appearing again. Let me remind you that the problem appeared in the Audit mode sysprep... So, we continue to dig the registry. I do not go to reboot and go to the section in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \\ SYSTEM \\ Setup \\ Status

where the following parameters in the following subsections are eventually assigned the following values:

~ \\ AuditBoot - 0

~ \\ ChildCompletion \\ setup.exe - 3

~ \\ ChildCompletion \\ audit.exe - 0

~ \\ SysprepStatus \\ CleanupState - 2

~ \\ SysprepStatus \\ GeneralizationState - 7

~ \\ UnattendPasses \\ auditSystem - 0

After restarting Windows exited the mode Auditby loading in mode OBE... I had to re-create so that Windows would safely hide it again on the next installation.

Good luck to all.

If you have the problem "The computer restarted unexpectedly ...", then you can solve it by reading this article.

I had a problem with an unexpected restart, and for about a week I could not solve it and did not understand what was the matter, because this was the first time I saw this. And I tried different methods. The described method helped me, but temporarily, after 2-3 Windows reboots or the installation of a driver, Windows no longer loaded with an error.

I tried different versions of Windows, formatted my SSD via LiveCD, via Paragon. Did both quick and full formatting, which takes much longer than the quick one that can be done when installing Windows. I wrote down different bootable flash drives, tried a bunch of options, but nothing helped - after a couple of reboots, Windows no longer loaded.

To fix the unexpected restart problem, press Shift + F10 at the time this error occurs (hold down the Shift key and press F10) to open the Windows console. Further type regedit and press Enter to open Registry Editor.

Next, you need to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> SYSTEM> Setup> Status> ChildCompletion. To open the folder structure, first double-click on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder, then double on SYSTEM, then twice on Setup.

There will be a setup.exe parameter and a value of 1 in hexadecimal.

Replace 1 with 3 and click OK.

After a couple of minutes or ten minutes, Windows will be installed and you can continue or start working.

Why does the error "The computer restarted unexpectedly, or an unexpected error occurred. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart your computer, and then restart the installation. "

I ended up figuring out the problem. and later. After installing the SSD, there were no big problems, although they always pop up on my laptop, but I solve them. But after changing the RAM, an unsolvable problem appeared within about a week and no Internet advice helped.

I decided to act: I took out my old 2 slats of RAM and put a new one. The computer worked, the memory test passed normally, tested the memory for about 2 hours and no errors. But removing the new RAM and setting the old problem solved it. I was even able to enable AHCI mode for the SSD and install all versions of Windows.

Therefore, if you have a problem installing Windows and the error "the computer restarted unexpectedly ..." is displayed, remember what you recently changed in your computer and remove it by returning the old one.

I will still order more RAM, but now I will only take Samsung, as well as my Samsung SSD and a Samsung laptop. Before that, I checked the RAM and it should have been suitable for a voltage of 1.5 Volts and for megahertz and for the volume supported by my motherboard. But in the end, after a long search for a solution, the problem was in it. It is not compatible with my laptop for some unknown reason.

But as I recently looked again on the intel website and in the aida 64 program, it turns out that my laptop supports a maximum of 1066 MHz, but for some reason it seemed to me that it supports 1600 MHz. This is what I think was my mistake. There was an incompatibility in MegaHertz memory.

Here is a video on this topic.

One of the most alarming and unpleasant signals for any user is the appearance on the screen of a system message that the computer has unexpectedly restarted or an unexpected error has occurred. Naturally, a spontaneous restart can scare anyone. The saddest thing is that such an error can appear in completely different situations and indicate both conflicts in the software environment and possible problems with the hardware. Next, we will consider the most typical situations in which this failure manifests itself, as well as the simplest methods of troubleshooting problems that arise.

Computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error: Possible causes of failure

As for the occurrence of problem situations, there can be a lot of them. For some reason, it is believed that in most cases, the appearance of a notification that the computer unexpectedly rebooted or an unexpected error occurred, is due solely to the computer hardware. This is not always the case, although it could have been the root cause. Even when installing drivers or other software, the possibility of such a failure is not excluded.

But among the main situations, several of the most common ones can be distinguished:

  • the impact of viruses on a running system;
  • clean installation or reinstallation of the OS;
  • inconsistency of drivers or installed programs with hardware equipment;
  • problems associated with the performance of hard drives and RAM sticks.

The impact of viruses and methods for neutralizing them if the system cannot be loaded

It goes without saying that a viral effect on the OS cannot be ruled out. Many modern threats can disable any system. For example, you can even find those that focus the maximum light power at one point on the monitor, which is why it simply burns out. But this is so, for example.

If the failure is really related to viruses, and you cannot restart the computer in normal mode or with a safe start (the error appears again), the user has no choice but to check the system for possible threats solely using boot utilities like Kaspersky Rescue Disk. Such programs are written to removable media (optical disks, USB devices), have their own boot records to start even before Windows boots, and can find deeply hidden threats not only on hard drives, but also in RAM. After starting from such a disk, in order to identify all possible threats, it is better to select not the standard scan offered in the default settings, but select all logical partitions and boot records using deep scanning.

Installing or reinstalling the system

Perhaps the most common is the situation when a failure manifests itself at the stage of system installation. This also generates a message that the computer has restarted unexpectedly or an unexpected error has occurred. Few know how to fix such a problem. The situation is aggravated by another unpleasant factor. The fact is that you can restart the computer, but in most cases the error occurs again, and with subsequent restarts it gets stuck in a loop.

The saddest thing is that no means help but one. When a crash message appears on the screen, the first step is to call the command console using the Shift + F10 combination and write the registry editor call string (regedit) in it.

In the registry in the HKLM branch, through the system directory, installation folders and status, get to the ChildCompletion section, in which the setup.exe key will be shown on the right. Either through the PCM, or through a double click, you should enter the parameter editing and change its value from one to three, confirm the actions by pressing the OK button and restart the Windows installation after restarting the computer or laptop. Usually the problem disappears after that.

Possible Windows errors during the installation of drivers or custom programs. What to do?

Unfortunately, a failure with a notification that the computer unexpectedly restarted or an unexpected error occurred can manifest itself in a running system, when the user independently installed drivers for some devices that did not suit them, or software that was incompatible with either the system or with " iron ". Although the problem is unpleasant, it can be solved.

If a regular restart does not fix the error, you can try to restart the computer and roll back by selecting from the start menu, called by pressing the F8 key, load the last good configuration, or try to start in safe mode, and then remove the faulty drivers or programs that were recently installed and caused the appearance of failures in the OS.

RAM conflict issues

An equally common problem is a malfunction of the RAM strips. In particular, this concerns their replacement or increasing the existing RAM by installing additional strips.

In this case, you will have to remove each bar in turn and overload the system. If a problem bar is identified (when the system boots up in normal mode), it will need to be replaced. Particular attention should be paid to the technical characteristics of the memory and the motherboard. This concerns the supported volume, voltage and operating frequency. In other words, in the motherboard slot designed for 2 GB, 4 GB of "RAM" will not work. The same applies to installing memory with support for 1600 MHz in a slot oriented only at 1066 MHz. And it goes without saying that the operating voltage should be taken into account.

SSD problems

Finally, the most unpleasant situation concerns SSD hard drives. For some reason, it is on them that such a failure appears most often. Of course, at the stage of installing the system, you can try to delete all logical partitions or completely format the hard disk, but, as practice shows, in most cases such actions do not give the desired effect.

One of the solutions can be switching the operating mode when installing the system to IDE (this is a prerequisite), and using AHCI in a running system. These parameters can be changed directly in the primary BIOS / UEFI I / O system.

Short summary

If we draw a certain line under all of the above, we can note the fact that in most cases the error appears at the stage of installing the system. Other situations are less common. If we talk specifically about RAM and hard drives, it is better to select equipment of the same brand, for example, install it on Samsung laptops and a hard drive, and only memory from this manufacturer. In this case, the emergence of conflicts is almost 100% excluded.
