Modern computers have many options for displaying images on a TV, one of which is a VGA connection. A feature of this method is that the VGA interface was in the past a de facto standard and even older PCs of venerable age are equipped with it. Therefore, if you are the owner of such a technique, then connecting a computer to a TV via VGA may be the only way to display images from one device to another.

Unlike most modern interfaces, VGA is analog and does not support audio output. However, almost all modern TVs have VGA connectivity. Look carefully at the connectors of your device and you will surely find among them one as in the picture below. This is the 15-pin D-Sub (VGA).

It is in it that we will connect a cable connected to its other end with a similar connector on your computer.

Make the connection in the off state and with the power cords unplugged!

When connecting, pay attention that it is not enough to insert the connector tightly and all the way, it will be necessary to tighten the “ears” - two screws on the sides. This will eliminate the possibility of accidental pulling out of the cable and guarantee a reliable connection. So, if we managed to connect the PC to the TV via a VGA cable, let's start setting up.

Setting connection parameters

Right-click on the free space on the desktop and select "Screen Resolution". If you did everything correctly, two devices should be displayed in the screen settings, and your monitor should be defined as the main one.

Next, in the "Screen" line, select the second monitor. In our case, this is ACER V243HQ. Check if the resolution of your TV set has been correctly detected. Please note that it should not exceed the physical resolution of the matrix specified in the instruction manual.

If the image on the TV is without distortion and changing the proportions, then congratulations - you managed to connect everything correctly. If the screen has black bars on the sides, then you have set the resolution or aspect ratio incorrectly. Please read the specifications of your TV carefully and select the correct setting in the Screen Resolution menu accordingly.

So, we figured out the image output and proceed to setting up the sound transmission to the TV.

Sound output

As we mentioned, VGA only supports image transmission. In order to output sound, the easiest way is to use a mini-jack cable, connecting it with the green output of the computer and the analogous input of the TV. The cable has the same connector that is widely used to connect almost all types of audio devices: mp3 players, stereo systems, headphones, etc. Multi-channel audio output uses a color-coded patch cable, so you shouldn't have any trouble connecting.

Possible connection problems

Sometimes it happens that, despite the correct connection, the computer does not see the TV via VGA. In this case, there are several ways to solve the problem.

Are you going to please yourself with the purchase of a new one? Have you already decided on the choice of a model, and the required amount rustles pleasantly in your pocket? Wait! Let's first see if it will be possible to connect it to the system unit.
Ideal - if the connectors of the monitor and the system unit are identical. If not, you will need an adapter to connect.

Until a decade ago, all monitors were connected via the VGA analog output, developed by IBM in 1987. The same connector was on the video card with a resolution of 640x480 pixels.
Upgraded to the SVGA version, this connector is still found on many video cards. It allows you to set the maximum screen resolution of 1280x1024 pixels with a refresh rate of 75 Hz.
In 1999, the first digital DVI connector appeared. It was designed for a higher screen resolution of 1920 x 1080. Accordingly, the image quality has improved. The disadvantage of the DVI connector could be considered its rather large size, so Apple released Mini DVI for laptops.
The DVI connector is still the most common connector, as it is capable of supporting both analog and digital formats.
A new digital HDMI connector appeared in 2003. It provided high bandwidth and maximum resolution of the displayed image. Accordingly, a Mini HDMI version was created for laptops.
The HDMI connector has been constantly improved, new versions have appeared. They are compatible, but if different versions of the connector are installed in the system unit and in the monitor, then the capabilities of only the old version will be available.

In what ways can you connect a monitor to a computer - discrete and built-in video card.

Usually discrete video cards have two, and in my case, three connectors. There may be several connection methods in this case, including combined ones: VGA-DVI, DVI-HDMI and vice versa. Preference should be given to digital outputs. I repeat that the most optimal option is when the system unit and the monitor are connected through identical connectors.
On the integrated video card, the VGA connector is most often found, so there will be fewer connection methods.

Step by step connection plan

It will not be difficult to connect the monitor to the system unit.
1. For this you need to have a cable with appropriate plugs and, if necessary, an adapter. Of course, the system unit and monitor must be turned off.
2. If the computer has two video cards, then select a discrete one. built-in low-power.
3. Connect the cable between the monitor and the computer's video card. Turn on your computer and check the signal.

If you have two video cards, then you can install two monitors.

So you've bought a brand new monitor for your desktop PC - now what to do with this unit? how connect monitor to the computer? For the quality of image transmission, it is better, of course, to use the last two. You can read more about connectors. So, we looked at which of them is in the system unit, after which we are already selecting a monitor so that it either has the same connector and cable, or, on the extreme, so that there is an adapter. If the PC has both a built-in and a separate video card, then we focus on those connectors that are on the discrete one, since they may differ. Below in the picture, the connectors on the built-in motherboard card are highlighted in green, in red - on the separately installed one.


And this is what the connectors for connection on the monitor itself look like. This sample has HDMI, DVI and D-Sub (aka VGA).

That is, it will be possible to connect this system unit with this monitor via VGA or HDMI - all that remains is to choose the option that we like, which is of course HDMI, and connect them with the appropriate cable.

After connecting the monitor for the correct display of the picture and color rendition, you will need to install the drivers that are attached to it on the CD.

On the internet, you will find a ready-made tulip vga connector, but unfortunately, even if you buy it, it won't work. To transmit a composite signal from a computer, it is necessary to support this type of signal standard. Until 2000, they produced video cards with support for tv-out over d-sub. That is, indeed, to such a video card, you could have a vga tulip TV adapter. However, after 2000, the signal transmission standard was changed, and video cards stopped transmitting the composite signal. Thus, if you make a vga tulip adapter or buy a ready-made one and try to use it on a modern video card, the adapter will not work under any circumstances.

If you still need to output the signal from the vga output of a modern video card through the composite input (yellow tulip video), then the only way to do this is to purchase a special converter device. It performs signal transcoding between different standards. The cost of this converter varies from $ 10 to $ 20. This is a rather complex device, so only a professional can assemble it.

If you are the lucky owner of an ancient video card (released before 2000) that supports tv-out over d-sub, for example, from Matrox, you can try to make a vga tulip adapter yourself. To do this, you need the rca and d-sub or "" connectors.

Prepare vga connectors and cinch for soldering. Open the protective case, apply flux to the desired pads according to the pinout. Take a piece of cable of the required length, strip the ends, tin them.

Be sure to slide the connector housings onto the cable before soldering it to the connectors. Solder the inner cable strand to the center pad of the cinch connector and pin 3 of the vga connector. Solder the shield conductor of the cable (braid) to the other pin of the cinch connector and to pin number 8 of the vga connector on the other side of the cable.

Assemble the connectors on both ends of the cable. The adapter is ready. You can try connecting your TV to your computer.

Pay particular attention to setting the signal format, resolution and decoding. Start with the lowest values. The TV may not recognize the video signal for most combinations of these settings, so try different options.

The easiest way to connect a TV to a computer is a video card with a separate TV-out, tulip or s-video.

Therefore, in this article we will look at how to connect a laptop to a TV, and what settings of windows 7 / windows 10 OS are required for this.

As an example, we will use an HP dv6 laptop and a sharp TV with a 32-inch diagonal. Connecting other models of TVs / laptops may differ slightly, but the general principle of connecting devices will remain the same.

How to connect a laptop to a TV via vga?

For such a connection, you will need a VGA cable (Figure 1), as well as connectors for connecting this cable on a laptop and TV (they are in Figure 2 and 3, respectively).

You need to connect your laptop to your TV using a cable as shown in the following figure:

After successfully connecting the cable, you should set the appropriate settings both on Windows 7 and on the TV itself. To do this, press the "Input" button on the remote control and select "Input4" in the menu of your TV

It is worth noting that other brands of TVs may have different names: instead of the word "Input", "VGA" or "PC" can be used, but the essence remains the same.

Let's clarify what the commands "Duplicate", "Extend", "Projector only" mean:

  • - Duplication means seeing two identical images at the same time on both screens: both laptop and TV.
  • - Extend is to enlarge or lengthen one screen by two displays at the same time, that is, on one screen you can watch a movie, and on the other, for example, chat on Facebook.
  • - And finally, the third option is to turn on only the TV screen.

To set up a connection with a laptop, click on the picture with the words "Duplicate" or "Expand", after which the laptop will be successfully connected to the TV according to the vga-vga principle.

Please note that the above menu is not relevant for all laptops. If you got just such a model, then you should use the second option for setting up a laptop:

Right-click on any empty space on the screen and go to the "Screen Resolution" tab (if you have Windows 7) or "Display Properties" (if you have windows xp)

You will open the screen settings window, which shows how many screens you have connected at the moment: in this example, these are two screens

It is not worth making any changes in the "Display" tab, but in the "Multiple screens" tab, you should set the optimal settings for the user, and then click the "Apply" tab.

This completes the setup of connecting the laptop to the TV via the VGA cable.

How to connect laptop to TV via hdmi?

This option practically does not differ from the VGA connection method, with the exception of some nuances. So, you will need an HDMI cable and HDMI output and input ports on your laptop and TV

You need to connect the cable as shown in the following figure:

Directly setting up a laptop and TV is carried out in the same way as the instructions above, after which it will be possible to duplicate the laptop screen on the TV.

However, with such a connection, a situation periodically arises when sound is not transmitted through hdmi from the laptop to the TV (note that no sound is transmitted through VGA).

This is due to the incorrect setting of the sound parameters of the laptop. So, if there is no sound through hdmi, you need:

Right-click on the sound icon in the lower right corner of the control panel and select the menu;

In the sound settings window, look at the default device: if this is not the brand of your TV, then you should find it in the list and set it as default.
