The section of the online server configurator will help you to select or assemble a server as accurately as possible for your needs and tasks. Having completed your own version of the equipment, you will be absolutely sure that you are not overpaying for unused resources and characteristics you do not need.

The configurator is based on basic models from six global brands that have already proven themselves in the production of highly reliable and fault-tolerant products, namely: HP, Supermicro, Intel, Asus.

Configuration

How does our server configurator work?

Brand. The first thing to start with is to decide on the choice of a brand. Each of them is unique in its own way and has its own advantages, which means that the choice will depend on your personal preferences and the opportunities that this or that company can offer.

Server platform. By clicking on the selected brand, you will open a list of the basic server platforms that it offers. For convenience, a brief description of the main characteristics is attached to each platform, the tasks for which it is intended and its price is indicated.

Case Form Factor. The brief description also contains illustrations to help you determine in advance the form factor of the case (Tower or Rack).

Server model. By "clicking" on the "select" tab under the platform description, you will be taken to a list where you are offered a range of servers built on this platform. As a rule, all models are almost identical to each other, the only difference is in some pre-installed details (processor, internal memory, power supply, etc.). These differences can also be seen in the accompanying feature briefs.

Server configurator. Having selected a model and "clicking" on the "configurator" tab, you will be taken directly to the online-constructor itself and proceed to equipping the server you have chosen. You are offered over a dozen types of adjustable parameters (CPU; CPU memory; PCI-E slots; IO, SAS, RMM modules and others) that allow you to make more "fine" tuning of the selected equipment. Each parameter offers a list of possible options, accessories for it. You will also appreciate the convenience of indicating the price of the proposed unit, which allows you to simultaneously configure equipment not only in terms of parameters, but also at its cost, which is automatically calculated during the picking process.

"To order". Click on this tab and you will be taken to the configured order placement menu. After registration, your model will be assembled and tested as soon as possible, while preparing all the necessary documents.

Column "Selection of parameters"

This column helps you quickly filter all the server models offered in the configurator by specific parameters (number of processors, cores, memory, memory slots, case form factor, drives, and more). Select a model and click on the "configurator" tab to go to the online designer.

The main advantages of blade servers are: less rack space, higher density, more efficient cooling and more energy efficiency, and simplified administration of a large number of servers. Additionally, server blades can be more cost effective when LAN and SAN connections are required at high speeds. Accordingly, if these problems are urgent for you, you should consider purchasing blade servers.

A variety of devices can act as a storage medium for backups, ranging from USB Flash to tape libraries and disk arrays. The range of solutions is quite wide, as is the range of requirements, so it is impossible to give an unambiguous answer. In any case, it is necessary to determine the key indicators: The volume of backups, the number of stored backups, the frequency of their execution, the backup window, the required recovery time, the required speed of creating copies and restoring, the need to replicate or move the media with backups. In general, for small companies (SMB) which, we recommend using backup to HDD, either to NAS, or to a dedicated device with deduplication, due to easier administration and shorter recovery times. If there are specific requirements, then we are ready to individually select a solution.

A typical server uses only 5-10% of its capabilities. Virtualization allows you to combine the resources of the processor, memory and disks of hardware servers and provide shared resources for many virtual servers (virtual machines), efficiently and easily manage and monitor a much smaller number of hardware servers, and deploy many virtual servers on them ten times faster. This cuts energy and cooling costs, space and cabling infrastructure.

The server consists of several components that are replaced or added, such as memory, processor, hard disk, RAID controller, network card, etc. When increasing server performance, you need to understand which component needs to be increased or replaced. Processor performance, if the motherboard allows, can be increased by adding another processor, two, three, etc. or by replacing this processor with a more powerful processor. Memory is also increased or replaced depending on the type of memory supported and the maximum memory supported by the motherboard. The hard disk can be expanded by replacing it with disks of higher performance and capacity (HDD SAS 10k, 15k, SSD, PCI-E SSD). The largest drives are now SATA 4Tb or NL SAS 4Tb, the fastest drives are SSD and PCI-E SSD. The performance of a RAID controller can be increased in several ways, or by adding cache memory, or replacing the controller, or adding another one. The performance of network cards can be increased either by adding network ports or by replacing network cards (for example, modern branded servers allow, without occupying standard PCI-E slots, freely changing 1Gb network cards to 10Gb). When enlarging or replacing components, do not forget to check their compatibility.

Cluster - a group of computers united by high-speed communication channels and representing a single hardware resource from the user's point of view. The cluster serves to distribute the load to increase fault tolerance. To create a cluster, you need software that supports this function, two or more servers, and, in most cases, a data storage system (DSS). The Data Storage System (DSS) is an integrated software and hardware solution for organizing the reliable storage of information resources and providing guaranteed access to them. Examples of cluster solutions:

  • Stratus
  • VMware vSphere
  • Oracle RAC
  • MS NLB, Failover cluster
  • Symantec Veritas Cluster Server

Almost all DBMSs have built-in backup devices. If you need advanced functionality, then you must use a third-party backup tool. It can be either free software or paid. Depending on the software licensing model, you need to purchase a certain set of licenses.

PC and workstation configurators- a convenient way to select a PC or Workstation by the type of task and power. A large selection of components tested for compatibility.

Server and storage configurator Is, in fact, an online designer of servers and data storage systems (DSS), "sharpened" for the personal needs of the client. You can choose from a wide variety of ready-made models of computing systems offered on our website, but with the help of this constructor, you can independently assemble your own version of a server or storage system based on basic models. In the configurators, the base models are represented by the following brands: HP, Lenovo, Dell, Supermicro, Intel, Asus, Buffalo, Qnap, Synology.

Configurator types

For convenience, our website offers five types of configurators, each of which can fully satisfy the needs of many of our customers. Here is a short description:

PC configurator

PC Configurator is a handy calculator where you can assemble a computer for your task. Computers in the configurator are divided into two main sections: Office and Home. In each section, the PCs are divided into series according to their capacity. And each series includes models in different cases and with different types of processors. Each series of PCs has a short description to make it easier for you to make a choice. All components have been tested by our experts for compatibility. If you have any questions, you can always contact a consultant on the site.

Workstation Configurator

The Workstation Configurator is a handy tool for those who need to select equipment for a task. Workstations are divided into two types of tasks: "for working with graphics" and "for calculations". In each series, options are presented, workstations, which we divided by computing power. All configurations are made by our technicians, and you can be sure that all components are compatible. With the help of the configurator, you can also improve the characteristics of our proposed configurations.

Software configurator

A convenient software configurator will help you choose the software you need. Now you don't have to search for programs in a large directory. Everything can be done in one window with just a few mouse clicks. Our specialists have automated and simplified the software selection process as much as possible, guided by two criteria - comfort and maximum functionality when working with the configurator.

Server configurator

This configurator is mostly intended for those who already have some knowledge of computer hardware. These can be specialists and engineers of IT-technologies or the so-called "advanced" users. In this section, you can design servers according to a variety of parameters (CPU; CPU memory; PCI-E slots; IO, SAS, RMM modules) that require certain knowledge. A wide selection of these options allows you to configure the exact option that suits your needs as accurately as possible.

Storage configurator

This section allows you to configure the DAS / NAS device for your own needs. Having chosen a ready-made basic storage system model, you complete it in your own way using the specified parameters. In the configurator parameters, you can change the number of disk drives, the capacity of each of them, or select drives by the size of the buffer memory. All the proposed basic models are accompanied by detailed descriptions of their characteristics, for example, they will help you choose storage systems by parameters such as form factor, interface type, and many others.

The advantages of our configurators

Server configurator

Server configurator

The server configurator is implemented for all servers presented on the site. Below are our recommendations on how to use it and some basic knowledge of server topics.
If you are comfortable without our advice, here are quick links to the main sections to get you started:

Navigation

What is a server configurator and why is it needed?

Choosing a server configuration is a technically difficult task, the correct solution of which implies knowledge of the model range and platforms and components. The current nomenclature of Supermicro platforms (it is at Supermicro that we build our solutions) today contains about four hundred positions for a variety of tasks. At the same time, the choice is not limited to platforms: flexible configuration allows you to combine cases and motherboards, the range of which is even wider. Often the choice is complicated by a limited budget, while the technical requirements for the server in terms of compliance with the task have not been canceled. It is not easy to figure out on your own in such a volume of technical information and prices. In addition to the traditional appeal to a qualified specialist by phone call or e-mail, USC Techno offers an online tool that, with basic knowledge of the subject, allows:

  • To independently choose the best platform option as a basis for building a system based on key characteristics.
  • Correctly select the components of the future server for the chosen platform.
  • Form a price for a ready-made server, save your individual configuration, or immediately order a server. The order is carried out without registration

The server configurator is implemented for all current Supermicro platforms, as well as for the proprietary line of OSK servers.

Supermicro Server Platforms - The Basis of System Building

Let's take a look at how the Supermicro lineup works. The basic components of the system are:

  • Chassis (Chassis) - the physical foundation of the system, including cages for installing hard drives, backplane (depending on the model), power supply unit (s), rack mounting rails (depending on the model), cooling fan (s) and mounting accessories. Enclosures have part numbers starting with the CSE prefix (for example, CSE-213AC-R920LPB). The range of chassis is divided into series according to their main characteristics: form factors of the case itself and hard drives (for example, the above case belongs to the 213 series: for installation in a 19 "rack, 2U high, 2.5" drives).
  • Motherboard - differs from the usual desktop PC in the technologies used, the supported components, the class of integrated devices, the density of the components and the variety of plug-in expansion cards. All these differences are due to the peculiarities of the operating conditions and the tasks facing the server. Supermicro motherboards have part numbers starting with the MBD prefix (for example, MBD-X10DRC-LN4 +). The MP lineup is divided into categories by processor sockets: the processor manufacturer and its series (for example, the above MP belongs to the category of dual-processor for installing Intel E5-2600 v4 / v3 series processors in it).

The platforms offered for selection and configuration are factory-assembled cases and motherboards. In the Supermicro nomenclature, platforms are referred to as SuperServer / SuperStorage and have part numbers with the SYS / SSG prefix (for example, SYS-2028R-C1R4 +). Full rules for naming platform models can be found. In the list of components for each platform, it is clearly indicated which body and MP are included in the composition (the platform shown in the example above is an assembly of the case and MP, which we have also already given in the examples). If there is no suitable solution in the list of offered platforms, it makes sense to contact an employee of OSK Techno to form an individual specification based on a combination of MP and a case: the possibilities of such a combination are much wider than the standard range of platforms and are able to provide a solution to almost any problem.

It should be noted that high-density servers (Ultra, Twin, MicroCloud series) are ordered only as platforms: their arrangement from a case and MP is rarely practiced due to technological features, availability of components, or is impossible based on the manufacturer's requirements. Moreover, a number of technically complex platforms are supplied only in a complete set not inferior to the minimum set by the manufacturer. Such platforms have a corresponding mark (Complete System Only) indicating the minimum configuration (processors, RAM, disks, etc.)

On the right is a table with the main parameters of server processors. The majority of the processor market is occupied by Intel products. AMD recently updated its server processor line for the first time in 5 years, while the Opteron 6300 is still a good solution for a particular class of tasks. The delivery of new Intel Xeon Scalable and AMD EPYC processors in the Russian Federation has not yet been established, they are placed in a separate table (see below)

We will not touch on desktop processors in this review, however, it can be noted that a number of single-processor servers and workstations support the installation of Core i3 / i5 / i7 series processors or have built-in Atom processors. As a rule, servers on such processors are suitable for simple tasks, for example, an Asterisk server or a firewall.

The initial line of Xeon server processors is the E3 family. These processors are characterized by a small number of cores and a high frequency; are installed strictly on uniprocessor systems. Dual channel supports DDR4 ECC memory up to 2400MHz and up to 64GB. Servers based on these processors are typically used as an e-mail server, firewall, domain controller, WEB server, entry-level storage server (file server), backup or archive server.

The large E5 processor family is divided into several product lines. E5-1600 v4 - processors with high frequency and up to eight cores for installation in uniprocessor systems. In the four-channel mode, DDR4 ECC Registered OP (LRDIMM not supported!) Up to 1.5 TB is supported.

The most extensive and most requested E5-2600 v4 line consists of several categories: Basic, Standard, Advanced, Low power, Frequency optimized, Segment optimized, Workstation and Low Power. E5-2600 v4 can be used in both dual-processor and single-processor configurations. In four-channel mode, up to 1.5 TB DDR4 ECC Registered / LRDIMM RAM is supported. The range of tasks solved on servers with E5-2600 v4 processors is very wide: from simple tasks like a domain controller to super-productive solutions of the class of a large enterprise.

Processors of the E5-4600 v4 line have a low frequency, but a large number of cores, and are used for installation in four-processor configurations. Xeon E7-4800 v4 and E7-8800 v4 are also used for multiprocessor solutions and differ from E5-4600 v4 in the number of QPI links (3 versus 2). Applications: high-performance enterprise-level systems, including for organizing virtual environments, machines for calculating molecular chemistry or seismic models, etc.

AMD processors in the server hardware segment are currently represented only by the Opteron 6300 line (EPYC 7000 is on its way - stay tuned for updates on the website). Recall that the Opteron 6300 lacks technology similar to Hyper-Threading.

In the filter of server platforms, the series of processors that can be installed, as well as the number of processor sockets in the system, have corresponding sections, marking the items in which, you can differentiate the required platforms from the entire nomenclature for further selection by other parameters:

In a separate table, we present the comparative characteristics of the new lines of server processors announced by Intel and AMD in mid-2017. The table shows that the new Intel Xeon line is designed to replace the current Xeon E5 v4 and E7 v4 series on the market. AMD at the presentation announced the superiority of EPYC performance over E5 v4 up to 70% depending on the segment and, apparently, will compete well with the Xeon Scalable line. Supermicro has also released updated server lines on new platforms that support Intel Xeon Scalable and AMD EPYC. The company OSK Techno updates the range of offered servers presented on the site and forms quotas for placing orders for new products so that our customers can estimate the budget today and buy a new generation server. We have highlighted a detailed overview of new processors and server platforms in a separate article.

The online server configurator implements automatic control of memory types in accordance with the selected platform: you only need to select the size of the strips and their number (where applicable, you can also select different types of memory: RDIMM / LRDIMM). The required amount of RAM in the server is determined by the task / applications used.

  • When choosing the volume of the RAM strip, in addition to the total volume determined by the task, one should take into account the total number of slots in the system (for future expansion, if applicable), as well as the number of memory channels in the system: for optimal memory performance, it is necessary to fill the slots in multiples of the number of channels (for example, for systems based on E5-2600 v4 processors, the optimal mode is with installed RAM bars in an amount that is a multiple of four per processor)

If the highest frequency of RAM operation (database server, 1C server, etc.) is critical for the task performed on the server, pay attention to its support by the processor, i.e. If, for example, with an installed processor E5-2620 v4, we put an OP with a frequency of 2400 MHz, then its operating frequency will be 2133 MHz precisely because of a limitation on the part of the processor. In addition, there are many other factors that affect the operating frequency of the OP: the number of bars, their placement (SPC, DPC), type, rank and nominal frequency. For example, for dual-processor MPs on E5-2600 v4, when installing memory, you can be guided by the following table:

  • On systems based on E5-2600 / E5-4600 / E7 processors, it is possible to install the LRDIMM OP: a type of memory with reduced electrical load on the memory bus, which provides a large total capacity without affecting the operating frequency. It is used when you need to provide a large amount of RAM at the maximum frequency (for example, in a database server to create a ram disk).

Server disk subsystem: brief overview and recommendations

In general, the disk subsystem consists of three elements:

  • Backplane is a backplane with connectors for hard drives (SATA / SAS / NVMe) on one side and a controller on the other. The backplane is included in the case and, depending on the model, can support different drive interfaces. The backplane can have expander (s) - this allows you to connect more drives than ports on the controller side. In simple systems, the backplane may be absent: the disks are connected directly to the controller.
  • The disk subsystem controller is a device integrated on the MP or implemented as a separate card in the PCIe slot, which allows you to manage the server disk subsystem. Various controller implementations are possible: - hardware (hardware, HW) separate processor for calculating the RAID logic and supporting special functionality, - software (software, SW) usually uses the resources of the central processor and HBA (Host Bus Adapter) , a controller that translates commands to disks without organizing RAID arrays. Key characteristics of controllers: type, number of ports for connecting drives, supported RAID levels, additional functionality (cache, special algorithms for SSD arrays, etc.)
  • Disks: differ in type (HDD / SSD), interface (SATA / SAS / PCIe), form factor (3.5 "/ 2.5"), size, speed parameters (rpm / IOPS), etc. All presented in in the Configurator, the disks belong to the corporate class and are designed for 24x7 operation.

Other characteristics of a disk drive include the presence or absence of hot swap disks.

To get a list of systems with the required characteristics of the disk subsystem, use the filter sections “drive bays” and “disk form factor” and the “properties” section regarding the onboard SAS RAID / HBA:

If the system does not have a built-in SAS controller and there is a need for it, you can add it with a separate card at the stage of system configuration.

  • Controller type, disk redundancy, required speed and reliability parameters are determined by the nature of the task. Choose RAID if you need to provide OS independent disk subsystem fault tolerance or if your software / OS has strict compatibility requirements for SAS controllers (VMware ESXi). HBA is suitable for systems with software / OS requiring direct connection to disks (Microsoft Storage Spaces, VMware VSAN) or for connecting external storage systems.
  • When choosing, consider the possibility of future expansion of the disk subsystem. In addition to a simple supply of free baskets, one of the expansion options is to install a SAS HBA controller with ports outside (SFF-8644) or cascade from a backplane that also has expanders with SAS output to the outside for subsequent JBOD connection.
  • If you choose a RAID controller with a cache, we recommend that you simultaneously include the cache protection module in the specification (it is also called “battery”, which is no longer a relevant term) - this will avoid losing the contents of the cache if the controller fails to write to the cache.
  • Pay attention to the presence of integrated devices such as SAS HBA / RAID, 10Gbps network controllers (right column of the filter of server platforms): their cost is significantly lower than the same, but installed with separate cards. For example, if a task requires a full-fledged hardware RAID controller and a 10Gbps network connection, by checking the appropriate boxes, you will receive a list of server platforms in which these devices are already integrated and vice versa: if redundant integrated devices are obviously not needed, you should exclude from the options containing their platforms: it is inappropriate to overpay for unused devices.
  • When installing processors in an amount less than the number of processor sockets (for example, one in a dual-processor configuration), implying the subsequent installation of the rest in the future, you should take into account several important points: memory slots of empty processor sockets will not be available; Depending on the specific MP model, integrated devices (such as SAS controller, 10Gbps network controller, etc.) and expansion slots (PCIe, NVMe slots) may not be available. This can be clearly seen from the structural diagram of the MP, which shows PCIe buses connecting the processor socket with integrated devices. For detailed advice on this matter, it is recommended to contact a specialist of our company.

In addition to the parameters already described, the filter allows you to select systems by the following properties:

  • NVMe Ready - Ready servers for PCIe U.2 SSDs. Unlike conventional SSDs, these drives offer the best performance by using the faster PCIe bus instead of the SATA / SAS interface.
  • GPU Support - Servers optimized for GPU cards (Tesla, GTX, etc.) with increased power and heat dissipation requirements. Such servers are used in computationally intensive industries (quantum chemistry, molecular dynamics, visualization, rendering, seismic, etc.)
  • Dual Power Supplies - Servers that have power redundancy for increased fault tolerance.
  • Shallow Depth - Servers that can be installed in telecommunication racks or shallow-depth cabinets with ear-mounting on one 19 ”plane without rails
  • Built-in 4-port LAN 1/10 Gb / s, 2-port LAN 10 Gb / s - these properties can be used to select servers that have integrated network controllers, other than the 2-port Gigabit, which is standard on servers
