We have already tested the capabilities of the integrated video core Intel HD Graphics 530 using the example of the Core i7-6700K and Core i3-6100 processors. Let us now summarize the results obtained. And at the same time, let's see how the processor part affects the performance in modern games.

Let us briefly recall that both processors represent the 14nm Intel Skylake family. Only the Core i3-6100 has 3 MB of L3 cache, two physical cores and four threads with a base frequency of 3.7 GHz. And the Core i7-6700K boasts 8MB of L3 cache, four physical cores, and eight threads. Its nominal operating frequency is 4 GHz, and the dynamic frequency can be increased to 4.2 GHz.

As for the HD Graphics 530 video core, in both cases support for 24 computational modules is declared, but their frequency formulas are different: 350 - 1050 MHz for Core i3 and 350 - 1150 MHz for Core i7.

The main board for the test bench was a unique motherboard BIOSTAR Hi-Fi H170Z3, which supports the installation of DDR3L and DDR4 memory. In this case, we gave preference to 16 GB DDR4 as a more progressive standard. The Core i3-6100 processor and motherboard were kindly provided by PCshop, which has a huge selection of computer components.

The display speed varied in the range of 30-40 FPS, with an advantage of up to 5 frames in favor of the Core i7. The video core worked at the limit in both cases, but the processor part did not. If the Core i3 tensed 40-60%, then the Core i7 gave only 20-30% of its resources.

And all because the developers from Codemasters, even in this mode, provided a pleasant picture with adequate control and a minimum FPS level. The difference in performance at the level of 2-6 frames remains with the Core i7. At the same time, the game is absolutely not demanding on the processor part, even in the case of the Core i3, but the graphics core only dreams of rest.


For weak systems Rise of Tomb Rider prepared a small surprise: the image can be rendered in HD resolution, and at the output we get a Full HD picture using scaling. As for the comparison, the minimum advantage at the level of 1-4 frames remains with the Core i7, but the processor and graphics parts in both cases are loaded to the maximum, and the overall speed often drops below a comfortable 25 frames.

In some places the difference reached 20 FPS and the ship's better responsiveness to the actions of the captain was felt.

However, even the 40-plus frames per second obtained on the Core i3 is not enough for a comfortable and fully responsive gameplay. In some places, the control was slightly inert, which did not allow responding to the actions of opponents with the proper speed. But the Core i7 not only raised the FPS to 50 frames, but also minimized the sluggishness of the controls.


Another popular tank simulator, Armored warfare, already traditionally on the integrated graphics offers to select the lowest possible settings at a resolution of 1280 x 768. At the same time, the game is quite sensitive to the type of processor used: Core i3 was able to produce an average of 50-60 frames per second, and Core i7 - up to 90 frames and more responsive control. That is, you can already think how to transform the extra FPS into a more pleasant picture.


Despite the fact that Overwatch was released in 2016, Blizzard Entertainment has tried to reach the maximum audience of fans of online team shooters. Therefore, the game can be launched even on HD Graphics 530, although for this we had to reduce the graphics settings to a minimum, and the resolution to 1280 x 720. As a result, we get very comfortable 80-100 FPS on the Core i3. The Core i7 adds a few more frames to this, but due to timing issues, this is difficult to illustrate. Pay special attention to the level of CPU utilization: in the first case it reaches 80-90%, and in the second it keeps at 30-40%. That is, the game is demanding on the processor side and is well optimized for multithreading.


IN Survarium at low settings and HD-resolution, a pleasant surprise awaited us: the FPS level in the case of the Core i3 sagged to 18-20 frames in places, but the controls were very responsive and allowed us to quickly respond to unfriendly actions of rivals. When switching to Core i7, the display speed increased to a more comfortable 25-34 frames. The increased dynamic frequency of the iGPU and the larger amount of L3 cache probably played a role. But the load on the processor cores was small in both cases.


CS: GO - managed to run comfortably at Full HD resolution, albeit at low graphics settings. But this is a game about reaction speed and tactical thinking, not about graphics. Therefore, even with a Core i3-6100 on one of the heaviest cards, you will get quite playable 50-60 FPS. If you are left without a discrete video card based on Core i7-6700K, then you can count on an additional 15-20 frames. At the same time, the video core is loaded almost to the full in both cases, which cannot be said about the processor part, especially in the case of the Core i7.


League of Legends offers nice graphics with fun animations that are not particularly demanding on the hardware platform. Therefore, you can easily run it even in Full HD with high graphics settings. In the case of the Core i3-6100, you can count on 60-70 frames per second, while the Core i7 raises the bar to 80 frames. No control problems were noticed in both cases, so you can play for your own pleasure.


Immerse yourself comfortably in the world Dota 2 it is also possible at Full HD-resolution, but already at the minimum graphics settings. In this mode, the Core i3 is capable of delivering up to 100 frames per second, loading the graphics core by 80%, and the processor part by 60%. Core i7 confidently takes the bar of 110 - 120 frames, while spending 76% of the processing power of the video core and less than 30% of the processor part. If it is important for you to get a more beautiful picture, then you can play with the settings, because the FPS level and the remaining hardware resources contribute to this.


Education and the first independent steps in the world World of warcraft it can be done quite comfortably only in HD-resolution and at low graphics settings. In both cases, we get a playable 50-70 fps with a slight advantage over the Core i7. But more experienced players assure that at subsequent levels the load on the graphics subsystem increases noticeably, so even the computing resources of the Core i7-6700K will not be enough for comfortable and efficient passage without a discrete accelerator.

Of course, in the case of the Core i3-6100 it will be lower than for the Core i7-6700K - the difference in demanding projects will be minimal, and in simpler projects it will even reach 20 fps. And although basically everything depends on the iGPU performance, but the processor part also makes a contribution. Accordingly, the efficiency of integrated graphics in intermediate CPU models will be somewhere between the results we obtained, for i3 models closer to 6100, and for i5 and i7 closer to 6700. In any case, when buying a new system with an eye on games now and in the future, it makes sense focus on at least low-end 4-core processors and a discrete video card.

INTRODUCTION A few years ago, the phrase "integrated graphics from Intel" pointed to a terrible graphics solution in terms of speed and quality, which I did not want to use voluntarily. First set system logic Intel with an integrated Intel 810 video core had extremely low performance, and not only in 3D modes, but even during daily work in operating system in 2D. A lot of time has passed since then, but before the release of processors generation Sandy Bridge Intel developers were, in fact, only improving the 2D part of their integrated graphics. For a long time, 3D capabilities remained at a frankly rudimentary level.

Sandy Bridge has become a revolutionary processor in many aspects, including the fact that it was from it that Intel thought about the active development in its graphics cores and 3D parts. And starting in 2011, with each new generation of processors, the performance of 3D integrated graphics began to grow at a very noticeable rate. It is worth recalling that in 2011, another significant event for integrated graphics cores happened - the release of Llano hybrid processors, with which AMD staked out the position of the leader in integrated graphics. However, despite the fact that AMD does not sit idly by and actively continues to develop its video cores, increasing their power and introducing more and more new graphics architectures in them, Intel was able to close the gap from the competitor. Moreover, by now AMD can no longer be considered a leader in the performance of graphics cores embedded in processors, but in the segment of mass low-cost solutions its positions continue to remain very good.

Nevertheless, not so long ago, Intel representatives allowed themselves to make a rather bold statement that modern graphics cores used in Broadwell and Skylake processors and belonging to the Iris and Iris Pro classes offer quite sufficient performance for mass gaming systems. Of course, here there is primarily the ability of Intel's integrated graphics to work normally in casual and graphically simple network games. However, in fact, the path taken by Intel's video processor cores is truly mesmerizing. Over the past five years, their productivity has grown by no less than 30 times. This allows Intel to claim that its processors with flagship integrated graphics options perform better than about 80 percent of the discrete graphics cards found in users' current computers.

However, in fact, such words of Intel representatives are likely to slightly embellish the reality. For example, if you go over the statistics of video cards used by gamers in the Steam service, it turns out that the share of mid-range and high-end video cards from AMD and NVIDIA, which are probably more productive than the most modern version of Intel Iris Pro, is at least 31 percent. But still, Intel is probably not far from the truth, because Steam does not account for the huge army of players who prefer Farm Frenzy to AAA-class shooters. Be that as it may, modern Intel graphics cores are indeed capable of offering quite impressive theoretical performance. In the table below, we present the theoretical power of common graphics solutions compared to the graphics of Skylake processors in older versions of GT4 and GT3. From these data, it follows that the older version of the most modern graphics core in terms of its power is able to compete with the Radeon R7 250X and GeForce GTX 750, which looks really grandiose.



However, there is a good reason why such an estimate of the power of Intel's integrated graphics can be questioned. The fact is that in processors targeted for use in desktop computers intel does not use its best graphics cores. The only exception in this regard was made in Broadwell, and desktop Skylake, at best, are equipped with only GT2-level graphics, which is far from Iris and Iris Pro and belongs to the HD Graphics class. The older versions of the built-in graphics only fall into mobile processors with thermal package 15-28 W. And this leads to the fact that often older built-in video accelerators in reality are forced to work at lower clock frequencies, not reaching the peak performance that they are capable of in theory.

But one thing is certain. Regardless of how much of the current graphics cards are able to overtake Intel's video cores - be it 50, 70 or 80 percent - the company has been able to overcome a very long distance in recent years. And this had a significant impact on the entire market as a whole. Users, in fact, had to completely say goodbye to entry-level discrete graphics cards - the need for their existence has disappeared almost completely. In addition, in the very near future, Intel, obviously, will be ready to strike at the positions of AMD hybrid processors. Intel processors equipped with eDRAM-memory outperform the older Kaveri and Carrizo models in terms of speed in 3D modes today. And in the future, with the release of the Kaby Lake generation processors, Intel plans to significantly expand the range of such proposals.



However, let's not look beyond the horizon and try to analyze what Intel's integrated graphics today have to offer for the desktop. Is it really powerful enough to do without a discrete video accelerator? In this review, we tested a pair of inexpensive Skylake generation LGA 1151 Core i3 processors and compared the speed of their HD Graphics 530 video core with the performance alternative solutions.

Skylake graphics architecture. Details

The role of graphics cores built into processors is increasing every year. And this is due not so much to the increase in their 3D performance, so much to the fact that the built-in GPUs take on new functions, such as parallel computing or encoding and decoding of multimedia content. The Skylake graphics core was no exception. Intel refers it to the next ninth generation (the countdown comes from discrete Intel 740 accelerators and Intel 810/815 chipsets), which means that there are a lot of surprises in it. However, it's worth starting with the fact that the GPU implemented in Skylake, like its predecessors, has retained the traditional modular design. Thus, we are again dealing with a whole family of solutions of different classes: based on the existing building blocks of the new generation, Intel can assemble GPUs that are radically different in terms of performance. This scalability is not new in itself, but Skylake has increased not only maximum productivitybut also the number of available graphics kernel options.

So, the Skylake graphics core can be built on the basis of one or several modules, each of which usually includes three sections. The sections unite eight execution units, on which the main part of graphic data processing falls, and also contain basic blocks for working with memory and texture samplers. In addition to the executive devices grouped into modules, the graphics core also contains an extra-module part responsible for fixed geometric transformations and individual multimedia functions.


At the very top of the hierarchy, Skylake's graphics core is very similar to Haswell's. However, with the introduction of the new microarchitecture, Intel has somewhat revised the internal structure of the graphics core (strictly speaking, it happened back in Broadwell), and now each GPU section has 8, not 10 executive units, and the graphics module combines three, not two blocks. As a result, the accessibility of the cache and texture units has improved for graphic actuators, which simply increased by one and a half times, and the number of actuators themselves in various versions of the new graphics core has become a multiple of 24. If you go into details, you can easily find other noticeable changes.

For example, the non-modular part is now in a separate energy domain, which allows you to set its frequency and send it to sleep separately from the actuators. This means that, for example, when working with quick Sync, which is implemented just by means of off-module units, the main part of the GPU can be disconnected from the power lines in order to reduce power consumption. In addition, independent control of the off-module frequency allows you to better adjust its performance to the specific needs of the graphics core modules.

In addition, while the Haswell graphics core could be based on only one or two modules, it received at its disposal 20 or 40 executive devices (for energy-efficient and budget processors, one module with disabled sections could be used, which gave less than 20, the number executive devices), Skylake can use from one to three modules with the number of executive devices from 24 to 72.

Yes, in addition to the usual GT1 / GT2 / GT3 configurations, an even more powerful GT4 core is available in the Skylake family of processors, which really boasts 72 execution units.



It is also necessary to mention that the variants of the GT3 and GT4 core can be additionally reinforced with an eDRAM buffer of 64 or 128 MB, respectively, which gives modifications to GT3e and GT4e. Broadwell processors were equipped with only one eDRAM option - 128 MB. In Skylake, this additional buffer not only changed the operating algorithm, becoming a "memory-side cache", but also gained some configuration flexibility. However, its performance will remain the same - it will be represented by a separate 22-nm crystal mounted on a processor board next to the main chip.



The addition of a stripped-down 64MB eDRAM chip to Skylake should expand the scope of GT3e graphics. Buffer-equipped Broadwell and Haswell processors were expensive and intended exclusively for high-performance laptops and desktops. The smaller eDRAM die brings more affordable Skylake variants with powerful GPUs to life for ultrabooks, for example.

But the peak performance of the executive devices themselves in Skylake has not changed - each such device can perform up to 16 32-bit operations per clock cycle. Moreover, it is capable of executing 7 computational threads simultaneously and has 128 32-byte registers general purpose.



According to the currently available data, the Skyklake graphics core will exist in seven different modifications, which have numerical indices from the five hundredth series:

HD Graphics 510 - GT1: 12 execution units, performance up to 182.4 GFlops at 950 MHz;
HD Graphics 515 - GT2: 24 execution units, performance up to 384 GFlops at 1 GHz;
HD Graphics 520 - GT2: 24 execution units, performance up to 403.2 GFlops at 1.05 GHz;
HD Graphics 530 - GT2: 24 execution units, performance up to 441.6 GFlops at 1.15 GHz;
Iris Graphics 540 - GT3e: 48 execution units, 64 MB eDRAM, performance up to 806.4 GFlops at 1.05 GHz;
Iris Graphics 550 - GT3e: 48 execution units, 64 MB eDRAM, performance up to 844.8 GFlops at 1.1 GHz;
Iris Pro Graphics 580 - GT4e: 72 execution units, 128 MB eDRAM, up to 1152 GFlops @ 1 GHz.

By increasing the power of the graphics core, Intel took great care to ensure that there was enough memory bandwidth for its needs, even in configurations without additional eDRAM memory. On the one hand, the memory controller has been updated in Skylake, and now it is capable of working with DDR4 SDRAM, the frequency and bandwidth of which is noticeably higher than that of DDR3 SDRAM. On the other hand, the GPU has a new Lossless Render Target Compression technology (aimed at rendering lossless compression). Its essence lies in the fact that all data sent between the GPU and system memory, which is also video memory, are precompressed, thus unloading the bandwidth. The applied algorithm uses lossless compression, while the data compression ratio can reach two times the size. Despite the fact that all compression requires the use of additional computing resources, Intel engineers claim that the introduction of Lossless Render Target Compression technology increases the performance of the integrated GPU in real games by 3 to 11 percent.



Several other improvements to the graphics core deserve mention. For example, the size of its own cache memory in each GPU module has been increased to 768 KB. Thanks to this, as well as by optimizing the architecture of the modules, the developers were able to achieve an almost two-fold improvement in the fill rate, which made it possible not only to increase the GPU performance when full-screen anti-aliasing was enabled, but also to add 16x MSAA to the number of supported modes.

One of the main guidelines for the graphics built into the Intel processor has long been full support for 4K resolutions. It is with this aim that Intel continually increases GPU performance. But there is another part that needs improvement - the interface outputs. It's no surprise that, like the Broadwell processors, the Skylake graphics core supports 4K output at 60Hz over DisplayPort 1.2 or Embedded DisplayPort 1.3, 24Hz over HDMI 1.4, and 30Hz with Intel Wireless Display or Miracast. But Skylake added partial support for HDMI 2.0 to this list, through which 4K resolutions with a refresh rate of 60 Hz are available. However, to implement this feature, you need some additional DisplayPort - HDMI 2.0 adapter. But on the other hand, HDMI 2.0 signal transmission is possible, including via the Thunderbolt 3 interface in systems that have an appropriate controller.



As before, Skylake GPUs are capable of displaying images on three screens simultaneously.

It is not surprising that with the growing popularity of new video formats, the Skylake graphics core has expanded its capabilities for its hardware encoding and decoding. Now, by means of the Quick Sync engine, it became possible to encode and decode content in H.265 / HEVC format with 8-bit color depth, and with the help of GPU execution units, to decode H.265 / HEVC video with 10-bit color representation. Added to this is fully hardware support for encoding in JPEG and MJPEG formats.



However, Skylake graphics belongs to the new, ninth generation, not only because of the above changes. The main reason was that it made significant changes in the part of the supported graphics API. At the moment, the GPU of the new processors has compatibility with DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.4 and OpenCL 2.0, and later, as it improves graphics driver, to this list will be added future versions of OpenCL 2.x and OpenGL 5.x, as well as support for the low-level Vulkan framework. It is appropriate to mention here that the new GPU implements full-fledged coherence of memory with the processor, which makes Skylake a real APU - its graphics and computing cores can simultaneously work on the same task using shared data.

Integrated graphics in desktop Skylake

Although the very fact of having an integrated graphics core in processors aimed at an audience of enthusiasts continues to cause heated debate, Intel is not going to give up the practice of bundling its CPUs with integrated GPUs. Moreover, the proprietary graphics core continues to evolve, acquiring new features and increasing power. However, until now, Intel continues to artificially limit the performance of graphics cores that go into desktop processors. Despite the fact that the company has developed four modifications of the integrated GPU for the Skylake generation processors, only the GT1 and GT2 graphics options fall into the desktop products intended for use in the LGA 1151 platform. That is, junior modifications with the number of executive devices no more than 24 pieces.



This is due to the fact that the modification of the Skylake-S processor design, which is focused on desktop applications, is embodied only in two versions of a semiconductor crystal, in which there are two or four computing cores, and graphics of the GT2 level. The more productive GPU options are focused exclusively on modifications to the design of Skylake-U and Skylake-H, intended for ultrabooks and other mobile systems. However, there is also a positive side to this. GT2 graphics in desktop processors are gradually gaining a significant place for themselves. If in the Haswell generation processors such GPUs were installed exclusively in the Core i7 / i5 / i3, now the HD Graphics 530 graphics core can be found in Pentium class processors.



In the following table, we have compiled detailed information on the graphics core options that can be found in the LGA 1151 desktop processors on the market.



An interesting point: in some inexpensive processors, the number of execution units in the HD Graphics 530 is reduced to 23. This does not affect performance too much, but it adds some additional differentiation to the dual-core line.

In the family of desktop Skylake there is no model with a more powerful graphics core than GT2. This means that the fastest desktop integrated graphics currently can be found in the previous generation Broadwell processors, where Intel did not skimp on the option of the GT3e core with additional eDRAM cache.


Skylake has nothing of the kind in its arsenal, and the graphics core works directly with DDR3L / DDR4 memory. Nevertheless, the progress in performance compared to the Intel HD Graphics 4600 core, which was used in older models of the Haswell generation, is quite noticeable: the number of execution units has increased by 20 percent, the volumes of internal buffers have increased, and in addition, the graphics have received the technology compression of textures when working with memory. All this, of course, should have a positive effect on performance.

How we tested

The purpose of this testing was somewhat different from what we usually set ourselves tasks. In this article, the protagonist is the integrated graphics core Intel HD Graphics 530, which is present in the vast majority of processors for the LGA 1151 platform. In our practical tests, we tried to answer two questions. Firstly, is the performance of such graphics sufficient to "pull" a gaming system at least an entry-level. Second, we compared the performance of the HD Graphics 530 with the integrated graphics cores found in other processors. First of all, with Intel HD Graphics 4600 and Intel HD Graphics 4400, which are present in Haswell, and secondly, with integrated graphics from AMD, which are found in the A10 and A8 processor families.

In order for the comparison to take place between the options of the same price category, we chose exclusively representatives of the Core i3 series from Intel processors to participate in this testing. It is these processors that can be directly opposed to AMD's APUs without resorting to additional reservations.

Also, two more atypical participants were involved in the testing. First, there is a Broadwell generation Core i5-5675C processor. This Intel processor currently has the most powerful GT3e graphics core among all its desktop counterparts. Formally, its graphics are called Iris Pro Graphics 6200, but in fact, it includes 48 executive devices operating at a frequency of 1.1 GHz, reinforced with additional eDRAM memory of 128 MB.

Secondly, on the diagrams you will also find the results of the discrete video accelerator NVIDIA GeForce GT 740 with 1 GB of GDDR5 memory. Participation in the tests of this video card is due to the need to get some kind of "reference point" for comparing integrated GPUs with more familiar benchmarks. GeForce GT 740 was tested on a platform built on a Core i3-4370 processor.

As a result, all configurations participating in this study were composed of the following set of hardware components:

Intel Core i3-4370 (Haswell, 2 cores + HT, 3.8 GHz, 4 MB L3, HD Graphics 4600);
Intel Core i3-4170 (Haswell, 2 cores + HT, 3.7 GHz, 3 MB L3, HD Graphics 4400);

3D performance

We used the popular Futuremark 3DMark synthetic benchmark to get a preliminary picture of performance.






The picture is quite pronounced. The new Intel HD Graphics 530 has definitely improved performance over the GPUs found in Intel Haswell desktop processors. However, the growth in performance is not of a qualitative nature. The result of desktop Skylake is still lower than that of the company's APU AMD class A10 and A8. The real star in these tests looks like the Core i5-5675C, which has fundamentally better graphics Iris Pro Graphics 6200 GT3e level. Unfortunately, there are no such solutions in the existing processors for the LGA 1151 platform.

Let's turn now to the results obtained in popular and modern games, which impose quite serious requirements on the performance of the graphics subsystem. In testing, we tried to determine if the performance of the Intel HD Graphics 530 is sufficient to play in FullHD resolution at least with minimal picture quality settings.












The results show that despite the progress that has taken place, Intel HD Graphics 530 for modern games can only be suitable for lower resolutions. Yes, compared to Intel HD Graphics 4600, the new version of the integrated graphics accelerator has become about 30 percent faster, but it is impossible to get 25-30 frames per second on the graphics of desktop Skylake. In other words, for entry-level gaming systems, the AMD A10 is still the more suitable processor - its Radeon R7-class graphics core is faster than the HD Graphics 530 by about 40 percent. Well, do not forget about the existence of Broadwell. Among the destop chips, this particular CPU can offer the highest performance of the graphics core. And here it is enough for even the most recent AAA games.

A separate item in our testing is performance measurement in popular network games, which usually have less stringent requirements for GPU performance.












For most multiplayer games, modern integrated graphics provide ample performance. Almost everywhere, the performance in FullHD resolutions is such that you can even set the average or even high level of picture quality. And in some places it is possible to play comfortably on the integrated GPU even at settings close to the maximum. The relative picture does not differ from what we saw above. Best performance offers Broadwell with integrated Iris Pro Graphics 6200. However, these types of processors are relatively expensive. The younger Broadwell model in the LGA 1150 version will cost $ 277, and therefore it is unlikely to be suitable for a budget gaming computer. If you choose from Intel Core i3 and AMD A10, it is better to make the choice in favor of the "red" offer - from the graphic point of view, it is more productive. At the same time, it is impossible to deny the significant progress that is taking place in Intel GPUs. They are increasing their speed at a very noticeable pace. And between the performance of the new HD Graphics 530 core and its predecessor, HD Graphics 4600, there is a gap of 40-50 percent.

Video playback

Let's now check how well modern graphics cores cope with playing video content in common formats. In fact, this is a very important piece of research. Thus, video playback in 4K resolution with high bit rates can often be performed on general-purpose processor cores only in sufficiently powerful configurations. Therefore, in modern GPUs, developers are trying to add special hardware engines that take the load off the computing cores. It must be said that Intel graphics cores are at the forefront of this process - with hardware video acceleration they usually do better than competing GPUs. And even Haswell processors with an Intel HD Graphics 4600 or HD Graphics 4400 graphics core coped tolerably well with playing videos in 4K resolutions, including those encoded in HEVC format. However, in Intel HD Graphics 530, the video engine has been improved again.

To evaluate the changes that have occurred and compare the performance of different processors when playing video, we traditionally use the DXVA Checker test, which plays video at the highest possible speed and records the resulting decoding speed. The video stream was decoded using the LAV Filters 0.67.0 and madVR 0.90.3 libraries.



FullHD video playback in traditional AVC format does not pose any problem. However, as you can see, the performance of the Intel HD Graphics 530 dropped here compared to the Intel HD Graphics 4600. However, in any case, Intel's GPUs noticeably outperform the discrete GeForce GT 740 and the latest AMD A10 modifications in video playback performance.



The benefits of Intel's video engine are even more apparent when it comes to 4K video. AMD processors give up here - they do not have hardware support for accelerating playback in this resolution. Still, Intel GPUs from Haswell and Skylake processors produce approximately the same result, which indicates not only that they do an excellent job with ordinary 4K video, but also that such solutions can display 4K video encoded from 60 frames per second.



If we turn to testing HEVC video playback, it turns out that only Intel graphics cores can decode it in hardware. Neither GeForce GT 740 nor AMD Kaveri processors support H.265 format. In this case, its decoding is carried out in software, which requires a fairly high processor power, especially when it comes to 4K resolution.



When it comes to decoding 4K HEVC video, the benefits of the Skylake GPU are clear. It is it that has the most comprehensive capabilities when playing this format. This makes it possible to play even videos that are shot at a frequency of 60 frames per second without loading the processor's computing resources.

In other words, it is the Skylake graphics that claim today to be the ideal option for use in home theaters and media centers. It is the most omnivorous, and the GT2 core with a good level of performance can be found today even in Pentium-class processors with a price of $ 75 or more.

Energy consumption

One of the advantages of integrated systems, which has become the topic of this article, is their lower power consumption and heat dissipation in comparison with systems equipped with discrete video accelerators. Such platforms are often purchased for reasons of minimizing maintenance costs and find their place in compact cases. Therefore, the issue of power consumption of processors with an integrated graphics core is by no means idle, this parameter can significantly influence the choice of one solution or another.

Considering that in this case processors with fundamentally different thermal packets are forced to take part in testing, we will only touch on the issue of power consumption when loaded exclusively on the graphics core, the frequency of which practically does not depend on the maximum TDP restrictions. More than detailed information You can always find information about the consumption of certain processors with different types of load in other reviews published on our website.

The following graphs, unless otherwise specified separately, show the total consumption of systems using integrated graphics accelerators (without a monitor), measured at the outlet of the outlet to which the power supply is connected. test system, and representing the sum of the energy consumption of all components involved in it. The total indicator automatically includes the efficiency of the power supply itself, however, since the PSU model we are using, Seasonic Platinum SS-760XP2, is certified 80 Plus Platinum, its effect should be minimal. During the measurements, the load on the graphics cores was used by the Furmark 1.17.0 utility. To correctly assess the power consumption in various modes, we have activated turbo mode and all available energy-saving technologies: C1E, C6, Enhanced Intel SpeedStep and Cool "n" Quiet.



Interestingly enough, integrated systems based on Skylake-generation processors have the best idle economy. According to this parameter, they are noticeably better not only in comparison with AMD's offerings, but also than their predecessors - Haswell.



We got about the same result under graphic load. The consumption of the Skylake graphics core is noticeably lower than that of the previous generation Intel graphics, not to mention the AMD graphics, the consumption of which is twice as much. In other words, processors equipped with an integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 graphics core are great for low-cost systems.

If the question arises about what the embedded cores of modern mass processors should be like, then one has to face two diametrically opposite opinions. Some users believe that GPUs built into the processor are an overkill, and manufacturers thus impose the purchase of a completely unnecessary part of their own semiconductor crystal. The other part of the audience, on the contrary, would like to see mass processors with more productive graphics, which could allow the creation of at least entry-level gaming systems without the use of an external discrete video accelerator. The testing of the new version of Intel's processor graphics HD Graphics 530 showed that the manufacturer can not offer either one or the other in desktop CPUs. However, movement in both directions is underway, and we are talking here about quite active actions.

So, for users who do not want to overpay for integrated graphics in the processor, Intel recently launched a separate P-series of Skylake processors. These processors are not completely devoid of an integrated GPU yet, but they contain a simplified accelerator of the GT1 class, which makes them slightly cheaper than chips with GT2 graphics. At the moment, the range of such processors includes only a couple of models, but, apparently, this is not the end of it.

As for the supporters of productive internal-processor graphics, so far they also cannot be fully satisfied. Despite the fact that Intel talks about the amazing progress that has taken place in the field of integrated GPUs, and that integrated graphics can compete with many discrete graphics cards, all this applies primarily to the mobile market. Skylake desktop processors have no Iris and Iris Pro accelerators yet, and only the mid-level HD Graphics 530 video core has to be satisfied. Yes, such a core is much faster than the HD Graphics 4600 used in Haswell desktop processors, but still its performance is not sufficient to provide an acceptable frame rate in modern games in FullHD-resolution.

In other words, AMD A10 APUs continue to be a better choice for budget gaming systems. Their graphics performance is clearly higher than that of HD Graphics 530. Intel desktop CPUs with HD Graphics 530 video core are suitable only for not too demanding network games.

However, if your area of \u200b\u200binterest is not the use of gaming processors, but the creation of an HTPC or media center, then Intel HD Graphics 530 manifests itself from a very advantageous side. The GPU of modern Skylake implements full support for hardware decoding of video content of all modern formats, which perfectly copes with 4K resolutions. AMD processors cannot offer anything of the kind, so in this case the best option turn out to be Skylake processors. Fortunately, the HD Graphics 530 graphics core today can be found not only in Core class processors, but also in cheap Pentiums.

On August 5, 2015, numerous topics of "waiting" on the iron forums of the Internet finally filled with messages about the long-awaited release of Intel Skylake architecture desktop processors. The main feature of the sixth generation Intel Core processors represented by Skylake is the development of DDR4 memory. This change pushed not only to change the RAM in the event of an upgrade, but also the motherboard. Therefore, Intel has announced and released a new chipset Z170 for the Skylake family of processors. So far, this base for motherboards is one of the most functional and expensive, but soon, as usually happens, Intel will release more budgetary versions of Skylake-compatible chipsets.


A little more positive emotions in Skylake are intended to add advanced overclocking capabilities. It is now possible to increase the frequency of processors with the letter "k" both by changing the multiplier and by changing the bus frequency. In addition, now there is no voltage regulator in Skylake processors, such powers are now again assigned to the motherboard power system. And a fly in the ointment for overclockers is only the same thermal paste under the heat-distributing cover.


So far, only two processor models have become the first-born in the Skylake lineup - these are Intel Core i7-6700k and Intel Core i5-6600k. Both processors have a new socket LGA1151 and are endowed with support for dual channel DDR4 / DDR3L RAM. Both processors have a new integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 graphics core.


The senior processor received an operating clock speed of 4.0 GHz with the ability to accelerate to 4.2 GHz in automatic turbo mode. At the same time, it has 4 physical cores and Hyper Threading technology, so the total number of threads is 8. The TDP of the Intel Core i7-6700k processor is 91 W, and the recommended price in the OEM version is 350 US dollars.


As for the Intel Core i5-6600k, in contrast to the Intel Core i7-6700k, it is already devoid of Hyper Threading technology, and has more modest clock frequencies - 3.6 GHz in normal and 3.9 GHz turbo modes. Its maximum rated power is also 91 watts, and the cost is stated at $ 243.
The new Intel Z170 chipset will to some extent only theoretically retain support for DDR3 memory. In fact, only budget versions of motherboards based on this set of system logic will have corresponding DDR3 memory slots on board. The main backbone of motherboards is already produced only with DDR4 memory slots. There are no difficulties in this, since the availability of the new standard memory in the retail market is already sufficient, and the prices for DDR4 are almost equal to the prices for DDR3. The most significant feature of the Intel Z170 chipset is support for up to 10 uSB connectors 3.0 and, of course, USB 3.1 support. In addition, the Z170 also features a new Intel network adapter.

MSI Z170A PC MATE

One of the motherboards based on the Z170 chipset on which the Intel Core i7-6700k processor will be tested is in front of you. MSI Z170A PC MATE, despite the ATX form factor, is a solution, if I may say so within the Z170, the entry level. The box of the board is painted in light blue and yellow tones, nowhere in the design there is a hint of aggressiveness and extremeness of the products.


On the back of the box, there is a detailed description of the main features of the board, brief specifications and a rear panel connector map.


Of course, apart from other features, the motherboard manufacturer highlights the presence of USB 3.1 ports.


A cursory examination of the motherboard immediately shows its poor performance. In particular, the textolite of the board itself is a somewhat stripped-down design, as a result of which the board is attached to the case with only 6 screws. Also, its budget is immediately distinguished by a modest processor power subsystem and the absence of massive cooling radiators with heat pipes.


The processor socket has undergone virtually no design changes compared to the LGA1150, so all air and liquid cooling systems that were designed for earlier platforms are fully compatible with the new platform.




The six-phase power supply system of the processor is endowed with two modest black radiators. The board is powered using a 24-pin main connector and an additional 8-pin connector.


The board has four RAM slots, each of which can take on board a 16 GB DDR4 memory module. Thus, the maximum amount of memory installed on this board can be an impressive 64 GB. DDR4 memory modules with a frequency of 2133 MHz or higher are supported.


As for the expansion slots, there is clearly a concern for users with old devices, since among the two PCI-E x16 and three PCI-E x1 slots there are also two PCI slots. To the right of them, under a massive aluminum heatsink, is the heart of the motherboard - a set of system logic Intel Z170.


There are no control buttons on the MSI Z170A PC MATE board itself, everything is implemented to a minimum, for the benefit of the low price. However, the price of this motherboard at the start of sales is not at all low - in Russia they ask for MSI Z170A PC MATE from 10,000 rubles.


The sound components of the board, as is the case with MSI motherboards lately, are separated from pickups and interference by a special audio path.


The board has six SATA-3 6Gb / s ports and one SATA Express port. In addition, a full-fledged M.2 port is located under the processor socket, intended for solid-state drives. 19-pin USB 3.0 header for outputting a pair of ports of this standard on the board is also available.


On the back of the MSI Z170A PC MATE, everything is modest, and at the same time enough. It immediately catches your eye that there are no old USB 2.0 at all - four ports have the USB 3.0 standard, and a pair of USB 3.1. In addition, you can find here a block of three audio connectors, a pc / 2 jack and a gigabit network connector. BIOS of MSI motherboards, as usual, has a lot of retail settings, and the MSI Z170A PC MATE is no exception. The firmware has two interfaces - EZ Mode and Advanced. In the first case, you have access to the quick and most frequently used settings, which are divided into 5 sections - CPU, Memory, Storage, Fan Info and Help.










And also three more additional tabs - M-Flash for flashing, Favorites - for saving and activating successful settings of the board, and Hardware Monitor - for managing the algorithm of the fans connected directly to the motherboard.


The "Advanced" firmware mode takes us to a more complete menu, where all settings are already available, including for overclocking.


As we can see, support for new operating systems is already implemented at the BIOS level.


As for overclocking the processor, there are practically all the options necessary for non-extreme overclocking. It is possible to change not only the frequency parameters of the system, but also to adjust the voltages.




The RAM is supported in a fairly wide range, up to DDR4-4133. By fine tuning timings, the MSI Z170A PC MATE board also has corresponding options.




Another interesting feature of the board's firmware is to view brief technical information about the installed devices. As you can see, the tested Intel Core i7-6700k processor was correctly recognized by the board.

In this review, I will try to evaluate the overclocking of the Intel Core i7-6700k processor, its heating and power consumption, as well as performance in comparison with the top-end processor of the previous generation, represented by the Intel Core i7-4790k. It will also evaluate the performance of the integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 versus Intel HD Graphics 4600.
The LGA1150 based platform ran with 16GB of RAM at 2400MHz. The Intel Core i7-4790k processor was clocked at 4400 MHz.

The Intel Core i7-6700k processor, despite its novelty, was recognized correctly by the latest version of the CPU-Z program. The only exception was the question of correctly determining the operating voltage, which the program did not cope with, either giving out absolutely fantastic 1.4 V from a simple one, then in a load of 0.2 V, so I ask you not to give due attention at this moment. I am sure that over time, software developers will fix such a bug. As for the RAM, it worked at a clock frequency of 2400 MHz similar to the previous platform, with the only difference being that it is already DDR4. I deliberately did not overclock the RAM on the LGA1151 platform, so as not to give the new platform a significant head start over the old one. In the course of reviewing the test results, you will see that DDR4 memory at similar frequencies already has a noticeable advantage over DDR3.

Overclocking, heating and power consumption Intel Core i7-6700k

4400 MHz is easy and natural - this is how you can describe the overclocking of the new generation Skylake processor. No manipulations with increasing the voltage during such overclocking were required, overclocking was carried out by increasing the multiplier. However, with a further increase in the clock frequency of the Intel Core i7-6700k processor, obvious problems began to be observed - 4500 MHz were taken with difficulty, and even then not completely - the processor tests passed, but as soon as the load fell on the integrated graphics, the processor immediately showed instability. Moreover, this phenomenon was observed regardless of the frequency of the built-in video core. Therefore, in the course of experiments, the frequency of the Intel Core i7-6700k processor - 4400 MHz - should be recognized as completely successful and suitable for daily use.


With the processor overclocked to 4400 MHz received for every day, it was additionally tested for heating, and this is what happened. Using a sufficiently productive Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E cooler, the maximum possible heating of the Intel Core i7-6700k was 70 degrees Celsius. Given that in the room the ambient temperature was 24 degrees Celsius.


But the power consumption of the Intel Core i7-6700k is a clear blow to the manufacturers of powerful power supplies. No more than 130 W of system consumption without a discrete video card, and no more than 200 W with a discrete GTX 960 2Gb. Great Intel, great Skylake!

Intel Core i7-6700k and work with DDR4 RAM

The screenshot on the left shows the LGA1150 and Core i7-4790k platform, the screenshot on the right shows the LGA1151 and Core i7-6700k platform. And although many will say that the advantage of DDR4 memory over DDR3 is small, I have to admit the fact that it exists, and it is quite noticeable. And, as I said above, for this it is not even necessary to overclock DDR4 to sky-high heights, the nominal frequency of 2400 MHz will be enough for DDR4 memory on Skylake to be no worse than DDR3.

Again, no overclocking! The review is not complete! Take it easy. :) If you want DDR4 tests on Skylake with overclocking, please - here is an ordinary overclocking of Corsair Vengeance LPX memory up to 3000 MHz. As you can see, in such a situation, DDR4 is simply out of reach for DDR3. With only one exception - almost any DDR4 memory will overclock up to 3000 MHz, while only a few of the many DDR3 memory will reach such frequencies.

Intel HD Graphics 530 vs Intel HD Graphics 4600

It's certainly not Broadwell with its powerful Iris Pro 6200, but Skylake will try. :) Let's compare the integrated video cores of the Intel Core i7-6700k and Intel Core i7-4790k processors, starting with the technical characteristics.

And, of course, synthetic benchmarks.


The advantage of Intel HD Graphics 530 over Intel HD Graphics 4600 is noticeable, but not so colossal to start talking about the integrated Skylake video core as suitable for modern and powerful video games.

Intel Core i7-6700k and Intel Core i7-4790k performance

In this section of the review, the performance of processors at the same frequency was evaluated. In gaming tests, a GTX 960 2Gb video card was used as a discrete adapter. The settings in synthetic benchmarks were used by default, in games the maximum possible (except for Far Cry 4 - medium settings were used there due to the complexity of the graphics).

As can be seen from the results of synthetic tests, where the load falls entirely on the computing capabilities of processors, the new Intel Core i7-6700k has an advantage over the Intel Core i7-4790k everywhere, and at the same frequency it averages 5%. It is hardly advisable to change the platform for the sake of these 5%, but when buying a PC from scratch, it is quite a weighty argument, especially if the platforms are the same.

But in games, in the case of using such a middle-class card as GTX 960 2Gb, there is definitely no difference between Intel Core i7-6700k and Intel Core i7-4790k processors. It simply does not exist here, both processors are more than enough for modern games, but with a complex graphics load, everything rests on the video card.

Conclusion

The release of Skylake did not bring any fundamental breakthrough to the evolution of Intel processors. This is still the same + 3-5% performance compared to the previous generation.
Behind Skylake, and per processor Intel Core i7-6700k the transition to the use of DDR4 memory, slightly increased performance and low power consumption play a positive role. The accompanying advantages of the new LGA1151 platform entering the market will also be support for new technologies within the platform. Separately, I would like to note that the new Intel Core i7-6700k when it appears on the market is not more expensive, and sometimes even cheaper than the previous top model Intel Core i7-4790k. As for expanding the range of models of motherboards and processors of the Skylake platform, take your time. In autumn, they are like mushrooms, they will appear in a whole scattering. So wait or take - the choice is yours! :)

Let's figure it out.

What is this chipset and where is it used?

Graphics solution 530 is used in 6100 and Intel Core i7 6700K. Not to say that the increase in the performance of the graphics core in games depends on the type of processor, but working with the i7 is somehow more pleasant. Both processors use 64-bit architecture. The first has two physical cores and four virtual threads. The second has four cores and eight threads. But this does not affect the graphic part in any way. It should be noted that such a graphics solution is used only in these processors. The rest of the models have either a weaker graphics core, or an unrealistically productive Intel Iris Pro.

The Intel HD Graphics 530 is a budget product in terms of its parameters. Therefore, you should not expect any fantastic performance from it. This graphics solution is used by manufacturers in notebooks, because the graphics core consumes much less power. This has a positive effect on the battery life of the device. If the laptop has an integrated graphics processor core and a discrete graphics card, then the processor graphics are used when the system is operating normally. But as soon as a "heavy" 3D application is launched, a powerful discrete video adapter automatically enters the battle.

Let's see how the world hits will behave at different levels of graphics settings when using this video card. First on the list is Blizzard's ancient but legendary Diablo III. On ultra settings The video card processes the image at only 35 frames per second. You can play. But not very comfortable. At medium settings, the video card quietly produces 71 frames per second. Why buy a laptop with integrated graphics?

The answer to this question is somewhat ambiguous. On the one hand, the integrated graphics are not very powerful, and there is little sense from it. But on the other hand, it is this solution that helps to significantly reduce the power consumption of the laptop. Plus, modern on-board adapters (such as the Intel Core i3 6100 - HD Graphics 530) do a pretty good job with 3D games. But not with the newest ones. Some laptop manufacturers are also implementing hybrid graphics in their products. What does it mean? This means that there are two video cards on board at once: built-in and discrete.
