Apple has always been known for its ability to present its own products. In 2010, Steve Jobs showed the world an iPad. In his opinion, the device should have partially replaced computers due to the compactness of the gadget. Moreover, the company has prepared several brand lines designed to fulfill the assigned tasks: work, study, rest. We suggest taking a closer look at the tablet families.

Classic ruler

It was shown in 2010. A revolutionary product at that time, now it looks clumsy. The mass of the gadget exceeded half a kilogram, and technical specifications left much to be desired. The first iPad camera was missing.

In 2011, the situation did not change dramatically. IPad 2 looked awkward. Although the body was made more streamlined. But the technical characteristics have improved markedly. Have second iPad even a camera appeared.

In 2012 third revision tablets made a splash. The design began to resemble the modern look of devices, and the technical parameters of the Aypad 3 have stepped forward several steps:

In 2012, another event took place - Aypad 4 was released. In fact, the public was presented with a modified version of the "troika", from which it practically does not differ in anything except for a few points:

The classic line of tablets was quiet until 2017, when the company showed off the iPad 5. Distinctive model features are to support latest versions OS, updated processor and increased battery capacity. More about technical characteristics:

Mini ruler

A compact replica of the classic iPad is everything you need to know about the mini line. In addition to its diminutive size, the device also has other distinctive features: narrow bezels, solid color design and volume control buttons have physical media... We suggest looking at iron tablet computer IPad mini:

Successful sales of the mini made the company work hard to develop a compact family. We offer to see what changed in iPad mini 2:

Apple did not delay the continuation for long and showed the general public the third member of the "mini" family. Most of the innovations concerned design. So the "home" key became identical in color with the body. Specifications

One of the journalists called the fourth mini "a kitten in which a tiger lurks." It is difficult to argue with the statement, since the tablet, with its modest dimensions, has a solid filling. IPad mini 4 presents:

Air line

At the end of 2013, the Apple campaign prepared a new line - Air. The main difference from other families is the search for a middle ground between compactness and ergonomics, which is reflected in the appearance of the device. Technically, the iPad Air never flew anywhere:

Just a few months later, in 2014, the second revision was released. Visually, the tablets practically did not differ from each other. The only thing that influenced the design was the addition of a golden color. Major changes AipadAir 2 concerned "hardware":

Pro version of the tablet

The first tablet for professionals (artists, animators, engineers, etc.) A distinctive feature of the family is the increased screen size, as well as support for Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard tools. On all revisions, the hardware of the family is noticeably superior to representatives of other lines:

We present to your attention the smallest tablet of the professional family. Due to its small size, the presented product becomes the most practical option for portable use. The developers awarded the iPad Pro 9.7 the most powerful camera... Most of the other characteristics have remained virtually unchanged

The representative of the line of the most powerful tablets from Apple with a screen of 10.5 inches. It differs from previous revisions of "Professional devices" in the average screen size. Key parameters:

The wide consumer audience of the tablet market is gradually taking on a narrow focus. Aipads are mainly used by people of creative professions. Especially for them, Apple has prepared an improved version of the largest iPad, which was released in 2017. The device has the following characteristics:

Latest 2018 iPad (6th generation)

IPad 2018 release is timed to a successful start iphone sales X, which was reflected in the design of the tablet. By tradition, the device has become a little thinner. The main changes lie in the technical specifications, which will be described in more detail:

  • Aluminum bodysupplied in the colors: "gold", "gray space", "silver".
  • 8 megapixels camerathat supports shooting in HD quality.
  • Volume storage: 32 and 128 GB.
  • Quad nuclear cPUA10
  • Display Retina measuring 9.7 inches.

New ipad release date

According to analysts, wait new version Aypad in the coming year is not worth it. The iPad 6 was presented recently, so the question of the new product is postponed until next year. Of the new products this year, you can only expect new versions OS, as well as the launch of the AirPower charging station. In addition, the company has not yet officially announced the Iphone SE 2.

How to find out the iPad model

If you want to buy a device from Apple, then you need to know everything about the tablet model. This knowledge is especially good when you buy a tablet from your hands. Each iPad is well-built, but the hardware can be very different. Not knowing all the subtleties, there is probability of overpay for an obsolete device. Although there were cases when unscrupulous online stores sent customers instead of Iphone SE Iphone 5. In order to avoid such troubles, we offer several steps that will help you decide:

If the iPad is on hand and the desire to find out information about it is a personal interest, then you can use iTunes service.
Having passed the synchronization, the service will instantly display the detailed technical characteristics of the device on the screen.

The Apple iPad tablets first appeared on the world market in 2010 and have already released 6 generations of the device in 4 years:

  • 2010: iPad 1 (2 modifications) * .
  • 2011: iPad 2 (3 modifications).
  • 2012: iPad 3 (3 modifications).
  • 2012: iPad 4 (3 modifications).
  • 2013: iPad Air (2 modifications).
  • 2014: iPad Air 2 (2 modifications).

Today we will tell you about each of them, taking into account their features, advantages and disadvantages.

* Modification means the equipment wi-Fi tablets and additional communication modules (the ability to use a SIM card).

The first prototype of the iPad appeared at Apple in the early 2000s and was named "prototype 035". According to Jonathan Ive, between 2002 and 2004, there was an active development of the external concept of the device, which later became the basis for the creation of the first generation iPad.

Photos of the prototype were released during the court proceedings with Samsung as evidence that the device was developed long before the patent rights arose (2005). By the way, the court made a final decision only by 2012 and ordered Samsung to pay Cupertino a big sum for illegal borrowing of ideas.

Returning to the “035” model, we can immediately note that it is much thicker than modern tablets and lacks the usual “Home” button. There is also an opinion that a full-fledged OS was installed on board the prototype, just like on Mac computers.

first generation iPad

The first iPad was unveiled on January 27, 2010 in San Francisco. The project could be called a pilot: Apple implemented a minimum of its ideas and gave the buyer time to evaluate the new offer on the tablet device market. Critics immediately drove the device into dusty nooks for the lack of a camera, weak processor and iOS capabilities. But the fans appreciated the new apple device at its true worth - on the first day, sales exceeded 0.5 million devices, and by the end of the year, a total of 7 million gadgets were sold.

the iPad of the first generation is strikingly different from its future reincarnation: clear edges, prominent walls and an impressive thickness of the device (13 mm) immediately catch the eye. Moreover, iPad 1 is the heaviest tablet in the entire Apple line. Its weight is 680 grams.

The lineup consisted of two offers: with Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G support. The tablet assumed three variations in memory capacity (16, 32 and 64 GB) and one color scheme - a black front panel and a silver body.

the first generation iPad is powered by the A4 processor. The total amount of RAM is 256 MB. Its power is enough for surfing the Internet, communicating on social networks, business correspondence, taking notes and supporting the work of simple applications. Unfortunately, modern games are too tough for him. The latest supported OS is iOS 5.1.1.

It is also worth considering that the "pilot iPad" received only an accelerometer and a light sensor.

End of sales date: Spring 2011.

second generation iPad

iPad 2 was unveiled on March 3, 2011 in San Francisco. It is noteworthy that this is the last presentation that Steve Jobs attended. World sales started on May 11, the tablet only reached Russia by May 27, 2011. The excitement during the sales was so strong that speculators were even in demand, who sold their place in line at Apple stores. According to some rumors, the rate for the first places reached $ 800. According to analysts, 70% of iPad buyers bought a tablet for the first time, which indicated an increase in Apple's share of the high-tech market.

the second-generation iPad has gotten rid of the bulging back cover - it's sleek and streamlined The speaker has moved to the back cover of the device, where it is safely hidden under the protection of a grid with perforated holes. Before the advent of the iPad Air, it was considered the thinnest (8.6 mm) and lightest (601 to 613 grams) in the Apple tablet line.

The lineup repeated its predecessor: devices with Wi-Fi module and gadgets that received mobile Internet in addition: GSM and CDMA models.

The second generation iPad has a faster Apple A5 processor with 512MB of RAM. Moreover, the second batch of iPad 2 Rev A tablets was released. The main difference was in the processor modification: Apple actively defended itself against jailbreak fans. The parties could be distinguished only after connecting the device to a computer. The technical excellence of the device was expressed in the appearance of a gyroscope, rear and front cameras.

iPad 2 gets a little more color variety with a silver body and a choice of white / black front panel. Internal memory remains unchanged.

End of sales date: Spring 2012 (for 16 and 32 GB), Fall 2014 (for 16 GB model).

Third generation - The new iPad

March 7, 2012 was the date of the official presentation of the third generation iPad tablet to the world. The official name of the tablet caused understandable bewilderment. Phil Schiller, after the presentation, answering journalists' questions, noted: Apple just wanted to do something unpredictable. According to other sources, Cupertino decided to abandon the numbering of products so that the user does not have an associative row: "the more the number, the better the device." World sales began on May 16, in the Russian Federation the tablet appeared at the end of May. It is believed that the start of sales for our country was a failure. Among the main reasons were named the active activity of resellers and the subsequent sale of "gray products".

Externally, the iPad 3 was fully consistent with the second generation tablet. They could only be distinguished by their model number, which was located on the back cover. The gadget has become heavier by more than 50 g, which is instantly felt by users during long-term work with the device. Moreover, many noted that the iPad is the "hottest" among the entire apple line - the rapid heating of the case also caused discomfort during prolonged use of the device.

The main advantages of The new iPad are:

  • A posh Retina Display that supported 1536 by 2048 ppi. At the same time, the overall color saturation has increased by as much as 44%;
  • Work in 4G networks;
  • Specifications rear camera have been improved to 5 mpx;
  • Full HD video;
  • For the first time, there is a possibility of face recognition during video shooting, as well as additional image stabilization sensors;

The new iPad runs under the strict guidance of the Apple A5X processor. The RAM capacity has increased to 1024 MB. For the first time, it has Siri voice assistant and dictation.

The offered memory sizes (16, 32 and 64 GB) and color solutions (black / white silver) remained unchanged.

End of sales date: November 2012

4th generation - iPad with Retina Display

On October 23, 2012, another presentation of new products from Apple took place, where the iPad with Retina Display was presented. In fact, it was a well-developed iPad version 3. Notably, for the first time in many years, the presentation was held in San Jose.

The main external distinction iPad 4 from previous models has an updated Lighting USB connector. From this moment the lineup represented 3 varieties: Wi-Fi model, "American" and "global" Cellular. The difference is in the supported ranges of LTE networks.

The tablet has become the proud owner of the Apple A6X processor, which is twice the power of the 5-series and has as many as four graphics core... The dual-core processor runs at a clock speed of 1.5 MHz.

Despite the increased capabilities, iPad 4 Gen is able to work without additional recharge for more than 10 hours. The gadget also boasts a front-facing HD camera and AirDrop support.

For the first time, Apple has expanded the amount of possible user space to 128 GB.

End of sales date: November 2013.

5th generation - iPad Air

On October 22, 2013, Apple introduced the iPad Air. The presentation took place at the Center for Contemporary Arts in San Francisco. The event was held under the mysterious slogan “we still have something to tell”. Cupertinos showed a tablet that is able to conquer the air: "Air" is lighter than air. Already in the first month of sales, the iPad Air took 3% of the market share of all apple tablets. It is noteworthy that in Russia the tablet has officially appeared since November 13.

With the fifth generation, significant external metamorphoses occurred. The first thing that catches your eye is that the frames around the screen have become much narrower. The overall dimensions are impressive, especially against the background of past generations. Since the release of the first iPad, the total length of the gadget has decreased by 3 mm, width by 20.5 mm, and thickness by 5.5 mm. Since 2010, the device has gotten rid of 201 grams (for wi-fi model) and 202 grams (for cellular), which can be equated with a full glass of semolina. On the back cover, two stereo speakers and one internal microphone... And the volume buttons were divided into two halves.

The lineup again consisted of three positions: Wi-Fi, LTE and TD-LTE. The latter is intended for the countries of Southeast Asia.

The production capacity of the device has increased tenfold due to well-coordinated work Apple A7 processor and M7 co-processor. Despite the fact that the amount of RAM remained unchanged (1024 MB), but its clock frequency jumped to 800 MHz.

iPad Air is available in two color options: Silver and Space Gray. The amount of user memory is presented in 4 variations and ranges from 16 to 128 GB.

End of sales date: October 2014 (64 and 128 GB models). 16 and 32 GB can still be found on store shelves.

Sixth generation - iPad Air 2

By October 16, 2014, the Yerba Buena Center (San Francisco) was once again transformed and presented to the world the world's thinnest tablet: iPad Air 2. "Do you see it at all?" - asked Tim Cook, demonstrating the novelty to the audience. For the first time, Russia was tacitly included in the list of countries of the first wave - official sales started on October 24.

The length and width of the Air-tablets have remained unchanged. But the thickness was 6.1 mm (-1.4 mm), and the weight was 437 (Wi-Fi) and 444 grams (LTE).

Combining the display with a touchscreen allowed not only to significantly reduce the thickness of the device, but also to add an anti-reflective coating to the screen.

The main production load fell on the A8x processor, in which it was possible to raise the CPU parameters by 40% and improve the performance of the graphic display by 2 times. The M8 co-processor took over the functions of motion control, barometer and sensor calibration.

A long-awaited update is the arrival of Touch ID fingerprint sensors and support for Apple Pay on iPads. The quality of photography has increased due to the implantation of an 8 microsecond camera. Additional functions include shooting in slo-mo and time-lapse modes, as well as the ability to take a series of shots. The device was decided by a lever that was responsible for switching modes.

It is noteworthy that for the first time the 32 GB model will not be on sale. But a model with a gold body color appeared in the line.

End of sales date: currently on sale.

Exactly one year after the release of the budget iPad, Apple introduced an updated version of the model. While retaining the body, screen and other basic parameters, the device acquired support for the Apple Pencil and the new SoC, which was previously used in the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. We studied how much more productive the new product has become, and analyzed whether it makes sense to buy it for owners of earlier models. apple tablets.

Before we jump straight into the study of the novelty, let's take a look at the current line of Apple tablets to understand which models should be compared to the 2018 iPad. So, at the moment, in addition to the aforementioned model, iPad Pro 12.9 ″ (second generation) and 10.5 ″, as well as iPad mini 4 are available for sale. Moreover, if the firmware was updated last summer, then the minicom was not seen update for two and a half years. Accordingly, the filling there is already, in general, outdated. However, Apple has significantly reduced prices for it: now they ask for only 30 thousand rubles for the option with 128 GB of flash memory. Interestingly, the new iPad 9.7 ″ costs two thousand more in a similar configuration. But if you take the option with 32 GB of flash memory, then you can get by with 25 thousand, and for the iPad mini 4 this option is not available in principle - Apple has left only the 128 GB version in the assortment. This is an interesting marketing decision, the goal of which is to make the outdated model still attractive without killing the sales of more relevant (and expensive) devices.

If we compare the new iPad with the 10.5 ″ Pro model, the picture is even less straightforward. Of course, the iPad Pro is significantly more expensive. But if a year ago the balance was clearly tilted in favor of a cheaper iPad, then after the release of a device with a 10.5 ″ diagonal this decision is no longer so obvious. But those who were primarily concerned about the support of Apple Pencil now also have something to think about.

In general, let's figure it out, and first take a look at the technical characteristics of the new item.

According to the characteristics, it is clear that, compared to the budget model of last year, the SoC has been updated, the battery capacity has slightly changed, and everything else remains the same. Well, recall that the table does not indicate the work with accessories, however, iPad Pro 10.5 ″ supports both Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil, iPad 2018 - only Apple Pencil, and iPad 2017 - none of this.

As for the comparison of the novelty with the iPad Pro 10.5 ″, the following can be seen: although the iPad came out more than six months later, it is inferior to the “proshka” in almost all respects. This is the SoC, and the amount of memory (both RAM and flash), and cameras (for this part in new iPad - no progress). But Apple Pencil support is now available on both models.

Packaging and equipment

The packaging of the new iPad is traditional for Apple tablets and practically does not differ from the packaging of previous generations of tablets.

The iPad itself does not bode well for any surprises: leaflets, a charger, a Lightning cable, stickers and a key to eject the SIM card cradle. The charger has the same power as the iPad 2017 ″: 10W (2.1A, 5.1V).

In general, Apple is true to itself: the equipment of the devices is the most stable element.

Design and accessories

Apparently, the iPad case has not undergone any changes - its appearance is identical, and the dimensions coincide with its predecessor down to a millimeter.

Like all the latest iPads, there is an all-metal aluminum case, a Home button with a fingerprint scanner, front and rear cameras, two volume buttons on the right side.

First, the speakers are located just below, to the right and left of the Lightning connector. Consequently, there is no stereo sound like the Pro series models. The camera still lacks a flash, and the camera itself does not protrude above the level of the back surface. There is also no keyboard connector.

Of course, in 2018, the design, almost identical to the 2013 iPad Air, looks somewhat dated. And after working with iPad Pro, the very feeling when you pick up a new iPad is that you have a simple, budget device. In particular, the ratio of the width of the bezels around the screen to the area of \u200b\u200bthe display itself does not seem to be the most advantageous, the thickness is also average. On the other hand, whatever one may say, this is still an iPad and, moreover, very inexpensive.

Among other things, there is a fingerprint scanner, a virtual SIM card and, most importantly, full compatibility with the Apple Pencil stylus. Performance claims iPad added a sensor to support pen input that was missing in the previous generation. So in terms of pen handling, the 2018 iPad is no different from the Pro range. But the compatibility with the keyboard has not appeared.

Speaking of accessories, it's worth noting that the only accessory currently available is the Apple Smart Cover. It is available in five colors (white, navy blue, charcoal gray, red and sand pink). We received a dark blue version for testing. It is pleasant, beautiful, although nothing new can be said here.

Alas, there is no case for the iPad, but the quality alternative solution You can use the iPad Pro 10.5 ″ Leather Sleeve. Since the dimensions of these two tablets are not too different, the case-case will fit both models. By the way, its use for new iPad themes more relevant, since the same accessory has a hole for the Apple Pencil.

Screen

The new iPad has a 9.7-inch 2048x1536 screen - basically the same parameters as the iPad Air 2 and iPad 2017. And the technologies that are in the iPad Pro are still not available here.

Detailed screen testing was performed by Alexey Kudryavtsev, editor of the Monitors and Projectors and TV sections. Below is his conclusion.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are no better than that of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the turned off screens (on the left - Nexus 7, on the right - Apple iPad (A1954), then in all comparative photos they can be distinguished by their size):

The screen of the Apple iPad (A1954) is slightly lighter (brightness in photos is 125 versus 120 for the Nexus 7). This is due to the fact that there is an air gap between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix. Due to the presence of glass / air and air / matrix boundaries with strongly differing refractive indices, such screens do not look good in conditions of intense ambient light. But their repair in case of cracked outer glass is much cheaper, since only the glass itself needs to be changed. In this case, the situation is partially corrected by the effective anti-reflective coating of the screen. The outer surface of the screen also has a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (effective, but still worse than the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are much easier to remove, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of regular glass.

With manual brightness control and with the display of the white field on the whole screen, the maximum brightness value was about 500 cd / m², the minimum was 3.8 cd / m². The maximum brightness is very high, and given the good anti-glare properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors will be at an acceptable level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by the light sensor (it is located next to the peephole front camera). Automatic brightness control works in the old Apple style (remember 2012) - the brightness can only increase with increasing ambient light level. However, if you put the tablet into sleep mode and turn it on again, the brightness will be set in accordance with the external light level, that is, it will decrease in the dark. It is very uncomfortable. This function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider at the current ambient light level, so the user may try to influence the operation of this function. Slightly increasing the brightness in complete darkness, we got that in complete darkness the automatic brightness adjustment function reduces the brightness to 15 cd / m2, in an office illuminated with artificial light (about 550 lux), the brightness rises to 110-125 cd / m2, in a very bright environment (equivalent to outdoor lighting on a clear day, but no direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or slightly more) is set to 500 cd / m². The result suits us. It turns out that the auto-brightness function works more or less adequately and to some extent allows the user to customize his work to individual requirements. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flickering either.

This tablet uses an IPS type matrix. The micrographs show the typical IPS sub-pixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of photomicrographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift, even with large gaze deviations from perpendicular to the screen and without inverting tints. For comparison, we present photographs in which the screens of the Apple iPad (A1954) and Nexus 7 display the same images, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m2 (across the white field on the whole screen), and the color balance on the camera was forcibly switched to 6500 K.

White field perpendicular to screens:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field (when evaluating, one should take into account the imperfection of the lens).

And the test picture:

The color balance of the screens is slightly different, the color saturation is normal.

Now at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens and the contrast remained at a high level.

And the white box:

The brightness at the angle of the screens decreased (at least 4 times, based on the difference in exposure), but in the case of the Apple iPad (A1954), the drop in brightness is less. When deviated diagonally, the black field is lightened weakly and acquires a violet or red-violet hue. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is about the same!):

And from a different angle:

With a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the black field is good, in some places closer to the edge there is a weak illumination:

Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is normal - about 800: 1. The response time for the transition black-white-black is 23 ms (13 ms on + 10 ms off). The transition between gray tones of 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes 35 ms in total. The gamma curve, plotted using 32 points with equal intervals in terms of the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal a blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.21, which is very close to the standard value of 2.2. Moreover, the real gamma curve almost does not deviate from the power dependence:

The color gamut is almost equal to sRGB:

The spectra show that the matrix filters moderately mix the components together:

As a result, the colors visually have natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, as the color temperature is close to the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the spectrum of the absolute black body (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, the color temperature and ΔE vary little from shade to shade - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of the color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance there does not really matter, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

Let's summarize. The screen has a very high maximum brightness and has good anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without problems, even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. It is also acceptable to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works more or less adequately, but in the old Apple style. The advantages of the screen include an oleophobic coating, no flicker, high stability of black to deviation of the gaze from perpendicular to the screen plane, good uniformity of the black field, as well as sRGB color gamut and color balance close to standard. The screen has no significant drawbacks.

Video playback

To test the display of video files on the screen of the device itself, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see "Testing methods for video playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)"). Screenshots with a 1-second exposure helped determine the frame output of video files with different parameters. We limited ourselves to H.264 / H.265 files with a resolution of 3840 by 2160 (4K) pixels and frame rates of 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps. In the tests, we used the Safari browser, from which we launched video files for playback using direct links and switched to full screen output. H.265 files can only be played up to 30 fps. Here's an example shot in case of H.264, 4K, 60 fps:

It can be seen that the duration of the frames is the same. The screen refresh rate is fixed and equal to 60 Hz, therefore, in the case of files with 24, 25 and 50 fps, the duration of the output of part of the frames is doubled, but the duration alternation is performed in groups with an equal number of frames. Note that this tablet has support for hardware decoding of H.265 files with a color depth of 10 bits per color, while the output to the screen, apparently, is also carried out in 10-bit mode. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the actual range of the video file.

Performance

The new iPad is powered by the Apple A10 Fusion SoC, built using the 16nm process technology. The single-chip system includes a quad-core 64-bit CPU, with two cores being energy efficient. The maximum performance of the other two cores is 2.34 GHz. The amount of RAM has not been officially reported, but benchmarks indicate it is 2GB, just like in the past iPad.

This SoC is well known to us from the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. It has not been used in tablets before (in iPad Pro last generation used by Apple A10X). Consequently, main question - how much faster the new iPad is than its predecessor, and how much slower the iPad Pro 10.5 ″.

Let's start with browser tests: SunSpider 1.0, Octane Benchmark, Kraken Benchmark, etc. All tests were run in Safari, but different iOS versions: 10th in the case of last year's devices and 11th in the case of a new product. Results were rounded to whole numbers.

The most interesting thing in the results obtained is the difference between Apple A10 and Apple A10X: it is significantly larger than the possible error. However, the gap between this year's iPad and last year's model is also undoubted and significant.

Now let's see how the iPad 2018 performs in Geekbench - a multi-platform benchmark that measures the performance of CPU and RAM, and from the fourth version, which we used for testing, also the computing capabilities of the GPU (if you want to mine bitcoins on the iPad, you should be interested in this particular item :)). Plus, we haven't forgotten about the comprehensive AnTuTu Benchmark.

AnTuTu Benchmark 6.1
(more is better)
179331 points 127869 points 236317 points

The layout is almost identical. Moreover, in some tests, the gap between Apple A10 and Apple A10X is one and a half to two times (of course, not in favor of a cheaper device)!

The last group of benchmarks is dedicated to GPU performance testing. We used 3DMark, GFXBench Metal 3.1.5 and Basemark Metal.

Let's start with GFXBecnh. Recall that Offscreen tests are displaying a 1080p picture regardless of the actual screen resolution. And tests without Offscreen means displaying a picture in exactly the resolution that corresponds to the device's screen resolution. That is, the Offscreen tests are indicative from the point of view of the abstract performance of the SoC, and real tests - from the point of view of the comfort of the game on a specific device.

GFXBenchmark T-Rex (1080p Offscreen) 114.8 fps 80.9 fps 199.0 fps

And again, no surprises: the alignment is exactly the same as described in browser and complex benchmarks. The difference also persists: to simplify, the performance difference between iPad 2017 and iPad 2018 is about the same as between iPad 2018 and iPad Pro 10.5 ″.

It is significant here that the difference between the iPad 2017 and the iPad 2018, although undoubted and significant, is still not as great as between the iPad 2018 and iPad Pro 10.5 ″.

Finally - Basemark Metal.

And again the picture repeats itself. So we can conclude with complete confidence: the 2018 iPad, although it has the same generation SoC as the iPad Pro 10.5 ″, came out even later, but it doesn’t come close to it in terms of performance. On the contrary, there is a gap from the model of the previous generation iPad, and rather big (of course, in favor of the new product), but still less than the difference with the Pro.

Autonomous work and heating

We spent detailed tests autonomous work of the new iPad. Judging by them, the battery life of the tablet remained approximately equal to its predecessor, and we praised it for this parameter.

The minimal decrease in battery capacity had almost no effect on the results - at least in everyday use, there won't be much difference. It is much worse that the decrease in battery power is uneven, that is, from 100% to 50%, the tablet is discharged much longer than from 50% to 0%. For the user, this means that you need to mentally correct for this feature when you plan to use a half-empty tablet.

Nevertheless, summarizing the situation with battery life, it can be noted that the new iPad is one of the longest-playing Apple models.

At high loads, the tablet heats up a little, but this cannot cause serious discomfort. Below is a thermal image of the rear surface taken after several runs in a row (approximately 10 minutes of operation) of the Basemark Metal test:

It can be seen that the heating is more localized at the right edge and vertically approximately in the center, which corresponds to the location of the SoC microcircuit. According to the heat chamber, the maximum heating was 43 degrees (at an ambient temperature of 24 degrees), five degrees higher than.

Work in LTE networks

The tablet will work in almost all LTE networks, and also supports a virtual SIM-card Apple SIM (more on what it is and how to use it, described).

LTE reception is confident. Speed \u200b\u200bmeasurements using the Speedtest.net iOS application (a Beeline SIM-card was used) showed normal results for both receiving data and downloading. However, the results can strongly depend on the operator, the place of testing, the network load at a particular moment, etc.

iPad supports hot-plugging and SIM swapping (no reboot) and all the latest LTE and Wi-Fi standards (LTE-Advanced, Wi-Fi 5 GHz 802.11ac). We did not notice any differences from other current Apple tablets here.

Camera

The camera features and specifications in the new iPad are unchanged from the previous generation model. In addition, these figures correspond to iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4. Recall that we mean the resolution of the main module is 8 megapixels, Full HD video recording. 4K is not supported, nor is slo-mo 240fps (only 120fps). Below are examples of shots on the iPad 2018.

The quality of the images has not changed since the previous versions. They're still good in normal light and pretty bad in low light. It is not recommended to use the camera even in the early twilight, but if absolutely necessary, something can be documented.

With video filming, everything is as good as it was. No changes. But still, you should not rely on it with a lack of lighting unless absolutely necessary.

conclusions

The iPad update is quite predictable and even boring. This, probably, will not please technologists and those who expect innovative innovations from every new Apple device, but for ordinary userswho just need good tablet, better news than you can imagine. Well, really, is it bad that the iPad line is finally in perfect balance? There are two iPad Pros for the most demanding and generous ones, there is an iPad mini 4 for those who need the most compact version, and, finally, there is a regular iPad, which lacks stars from the sky, is inferior in almost all characteristics to the iPad Pro, but from the point of view pure functionality gives almost the maximum, but at the same time it is the cheapest.

Indeed, a year ago, when there was no iPad Pro 10.5 ″ yet, but there was an iPad Pro 9.7 ″, the lack of Apple Pencil support in a regular iPad looked like the main difference. Higher performance in the iPad Pro, of course, too, and the capabilities of the camera, but it is clear that in everyday use of the tablet, both are far from the essentials. But after the release of the iPad Pro 10.5 ″, the design of which is, of course, much better, there is no longer a need to artificially deprive a cheap iPad of such a wonderful thing as Apple Pencil support. Moreover, Apple is now positioning it as a learning model. And it turns out that if you are not chasing the wow effect and records in benchmarks, but just want a "workhorse", then iPad 2018 is the optimal solution. At least in terms of price / quality ratio.

Yes, there is no support for the Smart Keyboard, but in our opinion it really only makes sense for the iPad Pro 12.9 ″, as the dimensions there allow it to be made full-sized. And if you really need a keyboard on the iPad 9.7 ″, you can buy a Bluetooth keyboard. Otherwise, this device can do everything the same as with the iPad Pro 10.5 ″. You, most likely, will not feel the difference in performance on real applications in the next couple of years, but working with the pen is no worse here than on the older model.

Apple's iPad Pro series tablets have truly succeeded in being a great replacement for the Air series. The new iPad Pro 2 models need to be improved, as Cupertinians usually do. The available tablets offer support for the Apple Pencil, a great 4x speaker system and more, but some things are still sorely lacking. For example, it would be nice to have a fingerprint scanner and a waterproof case.

Preliminary characteristics of the iPad Pro 2

The upcoming iPad Pro 2 series will obviously get the higher-performance A10X Fusion processor with four cores, but it is not known if the manufacturer will increase the amount of RAM. We hope that the specifications of the new iPad Pro 2 will include 4GB of RAM. In addition to the 9.7 and 12.9-inch models, the Cupertinos can present a third model with a 10.5-inch screen. All of them out of the box will run on the iOS 10 operating system.

  • Apple A10X Fusion Processor (10nm)
  • 12MP main camera and 5MP front
  • 4K video recording, live photos
  • OLED screen with True Tone technology
  • 32 GB of internal memory in the minimum configuration
  • New color - pink
  • Fingerprint scanner (built-in screen)

Earlier rumors said that future devices will receive a touch-sensitive Home button, like in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, but now many experts are confident that Apple will abandon it altogether. Thus, the Touch ID fingerprint scanner will be integrated into the display. Moreover, there is a possibility that the company will also get rid of the 3.5mm audio jack, which would be logical given the recent releases of smartphones.

Most likely, the iPad Pro 2 will be equipped with a connector USB Type-Cso that it can be connected to MacBook Pro 2016 year.

IPad Pro 2 release date

Considering the fact that the original iPad Pro was announced in March of this year, its successor will be shown at the same time in 2017. There is no exact data, as in such cases companies like Apple do not give early statements. we also cannot be sure that all three models will be announced at one presentation.

Price iPad Pro 2 in Russia

It's not hard to predict the cost of the next-generation American company's tablets. The price of iPad Pro 2 in the simplest configuration will not exceed 50 thousand rubles. This is roughly the price of the current iPad Pro with a 9.7-inch display and 32GB of internal storage. Obviously, the new 10.5-inch model will fill a large enough gap between the other two devices, and its cost will also be average.
