As soon as you have conceived and started planning your Internet project, you should take care of choosing and registering a suitable domain name.

Domain (domain name) - what is it?

A domain name is a unique designation that is identified with a specific resource on the Internet and consists of a set of letters, numbers and symbols. A domain name is uniquely assigned to a specific IP address. The domain name system was designed so that instead of a complex sequence of numbers, the user could enter a simpler and more memorable analogue in the address bar. Complete Domain name consists of the site name itself and the names of all the zones it belongs to, separated by dots. The last letters of a domain name after the dot are called top-level domains, those before them are called second-level domains, and so on.

Top-level domains are:

  • National (two-letter country code English letters or symbols of the national alphabet)
  • Common top-level domains, among which are distinguished:
    • non-sponsored (main), such as ".com" and ".biz" for commercial organizations;
    • ".org" for non-commercial, ".pro" for specialists in certain professions and others;
    • sponsored domains, such as ".jobs" for job sites or ".post" for email organizations;
    • restricted domains, such as ".edu" for educational institutions, ".gov" for US government agencies;
    • reserved domains ".example" for examples, ".test" for use in tests.

How to choose a domain for a site?

Approaching the choice of a domain name for your project is very responsible - a well-chosen name will be easily remembered by users and will attract more attention to your site. The choice of zone should be made based on the specifics and direction of the project, as well as regional binding. To choose a good domain name, use the following guidelines:

  • The name should be simple, beautiful, memorable and characterize the focus of your project.
  • You should not use numbers and hyphens, as such options may be difficult for users to remember.
  • Choose the most suitable area for the project, take into account the features of the project and the target audience.
  • Don't make the domain name too long.
  • Avoid using abbreviations.

Once you've chosen the right domain name, check to see if it's already taken by someone else. If the domain name is available, proceed with its registration and purchase. After payment, the domain name is registered in the central database (Registry), where your company details will be indicated.

Selection of a "beautiful" domain, or at least a "good" domain name for an organization, a new product on the market, or personal project to date, a whole science!
This is due to the fact that the number of free domains decreases every day and find short, memorable and at the same time beautiful name becomes more and more difficult.

If during the selection of a domain it turned out that it was already registered, do not rush to despair.

You can check the availability of a domain through our WHOIS service, which has contacts for communication with current owner. Maybe he'll agree to resell the name to you. Also, often domain names have already been purchased from various exchanges, where for a certain amount you can become their new owner.

1 Convenient and fast typing on the keyboard

If you look at the top left of your keyboard, you will see the following letter order "QWERTY". This letter combination does not make any sense, but among Internet users this is one of the most popular passwords. The reason lies in the fact that such a combination can be typed very quickly and is easy to remember. This principle is not the best solution to choose a password, because attackers first of all check them, but for the selection of a domain name, it is ideal. Therefore, when choosing between several options, pay attention to the convenience and speed of typing a name in the browser's address bar.

2 Short and concise title

If the domain name is too long or difficult to pronounce, it is better to omit it, because increases the chance of making a spelling error. The laconic name of the online store contributes to the return of customers to you and the emergence of new ones, and for non-commercial sites it increases recognition and makes it easier to find the page. For example, an organization with a long name and a lot of words is better to stop at an abbreviation.
Your main task is short and simple.

3 Keyword Entry

From point of view search engine optimization(SEO), the presence of a keyword in the website address increases positions in search engine results. Let's say you're in the used car dealership and your name is John Smith and it matches the name of the company, you might want to look at an option like "smithusedcars.com".

4 Regionality

If your business or product is targeted at a specific geographic group or is a regional representation, be sure to take this into account when choosing a domain zone and the name itself. So, for a confectioner from the city of Kiev, "sweet.kiev.ua" or "sweet-kiev.com" may be suitable.

5 Avoid numbers and hyphens

When using numbers, confusion often arises, hence it is not always clear by ear whether the number "3" or the spelling "three" is meant.
With a hyphen, the situation is a little more confusing; regional peculiarities are taken into account here. For example, in the German-speaking part of the Internet, its use is very common for separating words, but in the US, on the contrary, it is extremely rare. But still, for the most part, a hyphen is considered bad form.
There is another possibility, registration of several names for one site. Let's take "smithcars.us" for representation in the USA, and "smith-cars.de" in Germany. Therefore, the specifics in each of the regions will be taken into account.

6 Easy to remember

Don't forget that on this moment There are millions of domain names registered on the Internet, so your choice should stand out from the competition.
Before you buy a domain, check with your friends how quickly they managed to remember the chosen name. Does it sound nice?

7 Brand Name Check

Before registering a domain, you need to check that it does not contain someone else's brand in the name. Thus, a complaint can be filed against "smith-used-bmw.com" by the copyright holder and the resource will be blocked.
For this reason, be careful when choosing a domain, follow the rules about copyright.

8 Use different domain zones

It so happened that many tend to buy a domain in the COM zone. Indeed, it is the most popular domain ending in the world, with over 200 million names.
While the potential of other zones, which are no less successfully ranked by search engines and sometimes cost much less than .COM, remains completely undiscovered.

Hello friends! Vasily Blinov is with you again, and in today's next part about domain names, I will tell you how to check the history of a domain and why it must be done before buying.

As part of my course “How to create your own blog / information site and make money on it” in the Knowledge Base, I strongly recommend that students do a domain check and take only with zero or good history. Now I will explain why.

Why check history?

If you are a beginner and are not familiar with what are search engine filters, domain reputation, indexing and site ranking, then let's briefly explain in simple terms.

On the Internet and in any search engine, there are a lot of algorithms that analyze each resource in many ways. During the operation of the site, it undergoes thousands of checks. Since no indicators can be imposed on the resource data itself, due to the fact that they are constantly changing, all check parameters are assigned to its address, that is, the domain.

If the site has had non-unique content for a long time, viruses that prohibit materials (for adults, extremism, drug propaganda, etc.), low-quality links were bought or sold, re-optimized articles were published, spam, etc., then most likely the domain name of such The site is under filters and blocked.

Therefore, when you buy a similar domain with a bad history, be prepared for problems with indexing and promotion. Such a situation online can be compared to imprisonment, the status “previously convicted” on the name will remain for a long time, perhaps even forever, and will interfere with development.

It is unrealistic to learn about all filters and blocking, one can only guess by analyzing the data preserved in history on some special services. Let's take a look at how to use them in detail.

7 Methods for Checking History

Reg.ru (paid method)

The first way you can use is a special history check tool from the official registrar REG.RU.

By clicking on the direct link: reg.ru/whois/history. Register, replenish the balance for the required amount and request this check.

All addresses during the search and selection of the appropriate one, of course, will be a little expensive to check. Therefore, it is better to use it if you have already specifically decided on some free option.

All subsequent methods are free.

Whoishistory.ru

Whoishistory.ru is a standard service for viewing public domain information. Works only with .ru, .su, .rf domain zones.

It is not necessary to use advanced functionality, no matter how much I have tried, it does not show particularly important data. Just enter the address in the green field and click "Search".

Data is shown separately for each year, in my case - for 3 years:

  • Hosting server where it is located.
  • availability status.
  • Who is registered. If on individual, as in my case, then specifically to whom - it is not shown.
  • What registrar did it come from?
  • Registration date (age).
  • Dates when it was extended.

According to these data, the most important thing that can be seen is whether he was previously occupied by someone or not, and how long he has been occupied.

If you see that it has already been used, we analyze it with the following services.

Linkpad.ru

Linkpad.ru is a tool for analyzing incoming, outgoing and internal links on a website. If there was a site on the domain earlier, and it was indexed normally, then this service will show which links on this site were and which ones referred to it.

It is possible to define the theme in this way former resource and link quality.

In my case, the domain is absolutely new and all data for the last 5 years is zero. Here is an example of a busy domain, a site that is no longer active, is for sale, and that I wanted to buy.

You can also see which pages were recently on the site.

There is nothing wrong with such a domain; we can assume that the story is normal. That's just the price for it was offered 28,000 rubles. And it's against my principles to buy domain names from cybersquatters.

Screenshots.com is a service that takes screenshots of websites and saves them in history. Its disadvantage is that it only takes screenshots of popular sites.

It does not show various small resources that were on the domain for a short time. This task is better handled by the following service.

Archive.org

Archive.org is the worldwide archive of the Internet, periodically saves the appearance of sites throughout its operation. You can see what the popular Internet giants looked like before and have changed since their inception.

The scale at the top shows all years and the number of saves. And in the calendar - circled and highlighted in bold numbers when the archive was saved. You can view it by clicking on them. This is what my blog looked like when I first launched it in 2014.

Using these two extreme methods, you can determine what kind of site was on the domain, and whether it violated any Internet rules.

Search check

It doesn't hurt to also ask Yandex and Google what they remember about the former website located on the domain of your choice. For this in search line enter the full domain name and see the results.

If you enclose the domain in quotation marks and put an exclamation mark before the word (I recommend reading the article about search secrets), then Yandex will show only direct occurrences of the word you are looking for.

Domain name selection rules

Our domain name selection system helps you find the best name for your site.

We understand that you are a busy person, so we tried to make the process of selecting and registering domains as simple and fast as possible. You can check domains in several domain zones at the same time. To do this, in the field for entering the domain name, enter the full name of the domain, for example, test.com, or only part of it, for example, test. We are ready to offer you both the most common domain zones and specialized domains for your business. Our domain selection system will analyze the selected name in various domain zones, as well as offer its own options based on the dictionary of synonyms and their translation. The name can be specified in Latin or Cyrillic characters, they cannot be mixed together.

In order not to take a lot of your time, all domain check results are grouped into two tabs "Main result" and "Alternative". Just add the names you like to your shopping cart. The domain cannot be reserved, so once the domain names have been selected, we recommend that you pay as soon as possible.

Are my chosen domain names booked?

The name cannot be reserved. Until the domain is registered, it is available for registration to everyone on the Internet. Therefore, we recommend that you pay for the name immediately after you have selected domains for yourself.

When checking if a domain is free, you need to remember:

At the same time, several people can submit an application for domain registration, both in our company and with other registrars. Registration will be performed on the one whose payment will be received first. Therefore, after the domain name has been verified and the invoice has been received, it is better not to delay the payment.

Applications for domain registration for which payment has not been received during the validity of the invoice-contract are removed from the queue.

If it is impossible to register a domain name, after payment is received, the funds are automatically credited to the user's balance. If desired, the funds can be returned to the subscriber in the same way that he made the payment.

When checking domain availability, pay attention to special registration conditions. If such conditions exist, information about this will be to the right of the name of the domain being checked.

You will feel comfortable with us.

FREEhost.UA is not only one of the largest domain name registrars in Ukraine, we also provide hosting services. Therefore, choosing our company, you get a full range of services for doing business on the Internet. And our 24/7 support always ready to help in solving emerging issues.

Hello, dear readers of the blog site. We have already discussed, dismantled and even found out where you can. All this is wonderful. The site needs to be hosted somewhere and the choice of hosting in this regard is very important. But the site also needs a name (domain). Without this, nothing will work.

However, the problem is that every year it becomes more and more difficult to pick up something more or less intelligible. At the moment, there are already about half a billion registered domain names in the world, and this number is constantly increasing.

Do you have any ideas for a future name for the site? Great, all that remains is to check if it is still busy (see below for how to do this). By the way, some hunt, because there, along with a good name, you can get a little more residual weight from the site posted on it earlier. But first things first.

The problem with the selection of domains and why they need to be checked?

So, your future (or existing, for example) site needs a name. You yourself understand that in many ways it will be decisive in the fate of the Internet project (as you call the boat, so it will float). But the problem is that everything more or less sonorous and cool has already been sorted out (at least in popular domain zones). It looks like the situation with - everything is already taken.

Agree that the variant of the name for the site 3lsl6lshf9940dk0.ru looks original (and with one hundred percent probability it will not be occupied by anyone), but it is unlikely that anyone will be able to reproduce this from memory. And this is very important - domain memorability. Here it would be logical to give the site some short name to make it easier to remember and type.

But many years ago, almost all domain zones ran out of free three-character domain names (such as 2IP) and now they can only be bought from cybersquatters (domain speculators who buy the most promising options with the hope of future resale) for big money. Agree that this is not our method. The same goes for four-character domain names.

So we have only one way left - to turn on the fantasy to the maximum and try to come up with something that others have not thought of or have not thought about in this direction at all. Generally, creativity is welcome. I picked up a domain for my blog for two days, probably. I checked a lot of options - everything was already taken. This name came to mind (the song of Andrei Mironov was spinning in my head), I checked it and was incredibly surprised that it was free.

Where can I check the domain for employment (pick up a free one)?

All registrars take data on whether a particular domain is free from one database (access to it is obtained according to the protocol that I already wrote about), so it doesn’t matter which registrar you will check with. Let it be REG.RU(the oldest registrar in Runet). By the way, below is a form that allows you to check the domain name for popular zones in Runet:

The domain can be entered without a zone (i.e. vasypupkin). As a result, you will be transferred to the Reg.ru website, where the zones where this name is already taken will be highlighted in red, and where it is free (you can buy it right there, because they can get ahead of you). This form supports verification only in Runet zones, that is:

  1. ru - originally assigned to Russia
  2. su - a vestige left over from the Soviet Union and now representing the space of resources in Russian
  3. rf - domains in the national language (in our case, Russian).

Checking a domain for employment in several domain zones

Naturally, you can choose a future name for your site. in any other domain zones, for example, public (.com, .info, .org, .net, etc.). Your right. For this you can go to this page reg.ru and enter the desired name (without the zone) in the search bar:

It will be enough just to check the boxes next to those domain zones where the verification will take place (there are more than seven hundred of them in total). Here, again, a double-edged sword - to take a successful domain in a not very suitable zone or not very successful, but in your native zone. Read about it below.

As a result, the registrar will give you information about which of the zones you have chosen for verification have vacancies according to the parameters you specified:

By default, the system selects (adds to the basket) all free domains, but, of course, this will be superfluous. If you decide to buy, then one thing (although many people buy the same domains in other popular zones, in order to avoid, so to speak). In the screenshot, I chose the RU zone, which is quite logical and affordable. All you have to do is click on the "Register" button below.

I also advise you to use the tips and tools from the page " Help in choosing domains"

Pretty handy tools that allow you to partially replace the rich imagination and creativity.

As I said before, this is not an easy task. I mean, registering a domain name is not difficult (and not expensive), but the problem is that many of your ideas have already been implemented by someone.

Is there some more a number of nuances when choosing a domain, which I would like to voice (in part, but still based on experience):

  1. It is quite logical that a site targeted at the Runet audience would be located in the appropriate domain zone. As I said above - it is RU, or at worst - SU (although this is less desirable, because not everyone is aware that this is also "our" zone). In general, I personally favor the RU zone. Here the prices are lower, and the recognition of the zone is one hundred percent.
  2. I would not pick up a domain in the zone RF. The apparent simplicity of this solution hides many pitfalls. Yes, I registered someone new for myself .. Just for search engines and other services necessary for promotion, this name looks like this - xn--80aedhwdrbcedeb8b2k.xn--p1ai. Nightmare, isn't it? Although, if you don't care, then...
  3. The words from which the selected domain name is formed, as a rule, are written together, or they are separated by a sign "dash". The second option is considered "" and it makes sense to use it only when all the other options are already taken, and get a domain in the desired zone and with the right words really want.
  4. By the way, for all zones except for national ones (such as the Russian Federation), only combinations can be used Latin characters and some valid characters (,,,[_],[-]. As I said above, if the "cool" option is already taken, then you can use a dash to separate words. Someone also uses underscore, but this is not ice at all, because it is not really visible in the address bar and misunderstandings may arise.
  5. I also wanted to talk about the words that make up the checked domain name. Once upon a time, search engines better ranked sites where the domain met keywords on which this site was promoted. Now this is not so. At best, there will be no effect from this, and at worst, there will be a filter or pessimization. Therefore, you should not choose a name for a site like “kvartiri-v-moskve-arenda.ru”, but rather use the name of the company or something else creative (the memorability of the domain is the main thing).

Selection of a suitable option among vacant domains

At the beginning of the publication, I already mentioned that if you have unable to find a suitable free domain, then you can look for something in the "secondary market". Yes, yes, domain names are also used. After all, they need to be renewed every year, and if the payment is overdue for at least a month, then the domain name is put up for sale (at auction, as a rule).

Moreover, they can cost significantly more than novoregs. Why?

  1. Well, firstly, for the most part they are already something meaningful and digestible.
  2. And, secondly, they sometimes retain residual weight in search engines(the links affixed to them are valid, there is a TIC and PR).

If you create a site of a similar theme on it (or restore a previously existing one using ), then it may have a better chance of success than a newly registered domain. In any case, it will be more expensive to sell links from it if you plan to earn money on it.

You can buy an vacant domain at registrar auctions. One of the most famous is Registration of vacant domains.ru. Below are some offers of such a plan with Reg.Ru (click on the price for a detailed view):

Good luck to you! See you soon on the blog pages site
