Review of flatbed scanners for home. F-Secure Online Scanner is a cloud-based scanner. Small but smart

These devices are needed to digitize documents and photographs - if your work involves handling a lot of paper or processing images taken with analog cameras, then you simply need a scanner. Most often scanners are found in offices, sometimes in homes, but in recent years, the need for them home use has dropped dramatically thanks to the proliferation of digital cameras and smartphones that don't need to scan photos.

The scanner is also useful for artists who use pencils, brushes and other "analog" tools instead of a digital graphics tablet.

In the next section, we will talk about the important characteristics of scanners to consider when choosing, then we will give a few useful tips, and at the end of the article we will tell you about ten models worthy of your attention that you can buy from sellers in our catalog.

Key features to look out for

The two most common types of scanners are broach and flatbed. The former are intended only for digitizing documents and photographs / pictures on separate sheets of paper. During scanning, the sheets are moved with the help of a motor relative to the stationary sensor of the device. The second type of scanners is designed for scanning both individual documents and books and other storage media. It is worth noting that the scanning speed of broaching scanners is much higher - when using a flatbed model, after scanning each page / sheet, you will have to manually put a new one on the scanner glass.

Sensor type

Modern scanners use two types of sensors - CIS and CCD. The first type is used in low-cost and mid-budget models, as well as in broaching scanners. It allows you to achieve good quality materials and make the scanner quite thin.

CCD sensors are much more complex, more expensive, and larger. They are used in quality flatbed scanners, which are designed to scan photographs and other media that require high precision. CCD scanners have excellent color reproduction and depth of field. The disadvantage of such scanners is big size and slowness.

Light source type

The vast majority of models use LEDs to illuminate scanned materials - they are small, warm up quickly and consume little energy. Occasionally there are xenon lamps (high power consumption, excellent quality, small size and minimal warm-up time) and cold cathode fluorescent lamps (long warm-up times, excellent image quality). Most likely, your future scanner will have an LED backlight.

Maximum paper size

Most scanners can handle A4 or smaller sheets. If you are going to scan larger media, be sure to purchase the appropriate model - it will be larger and more expensive, but it will allow you to scan, say, A3 sheets without the need to cut or fold them, and then additionally process the received data on a computer. However, in most cases an A4 scanner is sufficient.

Resolution, dpi

The main characteristic of any scanner. It describes the accuracy of converting analog information into digital form - the number of pixels per inch. If you are not engaged in professional work with printing materials and photographs, then a resolution within 600x600 (horizontally and vertically) or 1200x1200 dpi will suffice. If you need maximum quality, then the limit of perfection rises to 4800x4800 dpi. Naturally, models with a higher resolution, other things being equal, are much more expensive.

Color depth, bit

One more important characteristic all scanners, which defines their purpose. Most office and home scanners are 24-bit, that is, they use 8 bits for each color in the RGB palette. Scanners for professional photographers and designers are more capable - they use 48-bit color, which allows you to achieve almost perfect color reproduction and process the resulting materials on a PC without losing their quality.

Scanning speed

Mostly it depends on the type of scanner. As already mentioned, broaching models cope with scanning much faster. If you need a printer for a large number of documents - buy a lingering one, if for high-quality photos and printing - take a look at slow flatbed models.

USB powered

Not too large models of scanners allow power supply through the USB port of the computer, so they can be used on the road in tandem with a laptop (or simply not to clutter workplace one more wire). As a rule, this applies to inexpensive models.

Connection interfaces

The vast majority of modern scanners are connected to a PC using a USB port. Some top models can also use the fast FireWire (IEEE 1394) port. In addition, sometimes there are models with an optional connection via a local network - wired (Ethernet) or wireless (Wi-Fi). The latter are intended for use in offices with many client computers.

Slide adapter

This adapter allows you to scan documents on transparent media - for example, developed film. These adapters are rarely used, but if you need to scan such media in your work, then you cannot do without them.

Auto feeder device

The presence of an automatic document feeder allows you to quickly scan a large number of documents (depending on the capacity of the automatic document feeder - usually 30-60 sheets). This product can be single-sided (automatically scans sheets on one side only) or duplex (automatically scans both sides of sheets with flip or simultaneous scanning). ADF scanners are designed for use in large corporate offices.

Be sure to pay attention to the printer's support for various operating systems. If you are using Mac OS X or Linux, then the purchased model must have drivers for them, otherwise the printer will simply not work (or will not work correctly).

Create space on your desktop or on a shelf. Consider the weight and dimensions of your future scanner - this applies to all computer peripherals.

Even if you are going to use the scanner in an office setting, this does not mean at all that you will need an ADF and a fast broaching model. Estimate in advance the number of documents you will need to scan - often you can save on this.

The scanner in conjunction with the printer can be used as a copier - this also allows you to save on the purchase of additional peripherals.

Discounts, TOP and credit

Scanner type

Flatbed - a scanner to which the scanned object is located on flat glass, under which there is a carriage with a movable matrix. As the carriage moves, the matrix scans the image. This type scanners are the most common.
Broaching - scanning occurs by pulling the document, using rollers, along the matrix. This type of device allows you to automate the scanning of large volumes of loose-leaf office documents.
Manual - the scanning process takes place by holding the device over the scanned surface.
Slide Scanner - used to digitize images from film originals.
Photographic - is a camera that is installed on a special stand with a row of documents. Images obtained from such a scanner are transferred to a computer for further work with them.

Light sensor type

CCD is an image scanning technology that uses a CCD type sensor. The scanned surface, illuminated by a light source, passes through the optical system of mirrors and a focusing lens to the light-sensitive matrix, which perceives the image and, using an analog-to-digital converter, converts it into a digital code, which is transmitted to the computer. All components (light source, matrix and optical system) are located on a movable carriage that moves along the glass on which the scanned image is located. The main advantages of a scanner equipped with this type of sensor are a large depth of field and high-quality color reproduction. However, the presence of an optical system makes such scanners rather bulky and heavy.
CIS is a scanning technology based on light-sensitive sensors that receive the light flux reflected from the surface of the original without the use of a system of lenses and mirrors. Information received from light-sensitive elements is digitized and transmitted to a computer. Scanners equipped with this type of sensor are lightweight and small, but inferior in depth of field and quality of color rendering to models equipped with a CCD sensor.
CMOS is a scanning technology based on the use of a CMOS sensor. The reader consists of: a light source, a lens system, a shutter and the CMOS sensor itself, which converts the resulting image into a digital code and transfers it to a computer. Scanners equipped with this type of sensor have lower sensitivity and worse color rendering than scanners equipped with a CCD sensor.

Maximum paper size

Depends on the type of scanner used and ranges from 105 * 148 mm (A6) to 841 * 1189 mm (A0). The most common scanners are designed to work with A4 paper (297 * 420 mm).

The presence of an automatic feeder

Allows you to automatically send the required number of sheets for scanning.

Horizontal resolution, dpi

from before

The number of vertical and horizontal pixels that form the image. To obtain high-quality copies, as well as to scan photos, a scanner resolution of 600 × 1200 dpi will be sufficient. When choosing a scanner, you should pay attention to the horizontal (optical) resolution, since it is this resolution that is responsible for the quality of the resulting images.

Vertical resolution, dpi

from before

Vertical resolution (interpolation) - an artificial increase in resolution by mathematical calculation of the missing pixels of the image, which ultimately degrades its quality.

Connection interfaces

Ethernet (RJ-45) is a packet data transmission technology between a device and a computer, which allows using the scanner as a network scanner, and enables all users of the local network to work with it.
FireWire (IEEE 1394) is a high-speed serial interface for transferring data between a peripheral device and a computer. Initially, the development of this standard belongs to Apple, which subsequently opened this standard to other interested companies.
LPT is a parallel interface for connecting a peripheral device to a computer. Due to the low data transfer rate this interface is less and less used in modern scanners.
SCSI is a set of standards for connecting peripheral devices to a computer and transferring data between them.
USB is the most common serial interface for connecting the scanner to a computer. The data transfer speed directly depends on the USB version.
Wi-Fi - standard wirelesswhich is used to build wireless networks, each participant of which can use any peripherals connected to the local network.

The presence of a slide adapter

A special device that allows a flatbed scanner to scan transparent originals (slides, film).

Color depth (bit)

Our technical support service is often asked for help in choosing a scanner. On the market you can find a wide variety of types of scanners: an image scanner, a barcode scanner, a film scanner, a biometric retina or fingerprint scanner, etc. We decided to shed some light on this issue and in the first post on this topic, we will briefly tell you how they generally differ document scanners, which, in particular, Epson offers for home and office, and what technologies they use.

Printer with scanner or standalone scanner?

You can convert a document into electronic form using the scanner installed in the MFP (multifunction printer with built-in scanner and copier) or a separate device - flatbed or streaming.

With a limited budget, it is more convenient to consider the option of buying an MFP. Scanners in such devices are slightly inferior in terms of scanning speed and image quality to individual scanners.

If you plan to transfer large volumes of documents to the archive (for example, in an office or accounting department) or if you need high quality scanned materials (for translating analog photos and film into electronic format), we recommend that you pay attention to a separate scanning device. Let's consider why this is so.

Scanning technologies

The difference between scanners is largely due to the peculiarities of the scanning technologies that they use. Epson devices use 2 technologies - CCD and CIS.

CCD - data reading technology based on CCD sensors (device with charge-coupled). During scanning, the light from the source enters the image, after which it is reflected (refracted) and, with the help of an optical system of mirrors, is directed to a line of light-sensitive elements (CCD sensors), and then, with the help of an analog-to-digital converter (ADC), it is transformed into digital signal... The CCD sensor guarantees good depth of field and excellent color reproduction, which is why most professional scanners are based on CCD technology.

CIS - technology using contact image sensors (CIS). This technology is often used in inexpensive scanners. Instead of a sophisticated optical system of CCD scanners, it uses multiple rows of red, green and blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that consistently illuminate the scanned image. The reflected light strikes the contact image sensors located across the entire width of the scanning area, very close to the surface of the glass plate or document. Then, using an ADC, the signal from the sensors is converted into a digital code.

In short, Sklifosovsky!

CCD scanners provide images higher quality and resolution, and also allow you to scan "bas-reliefs" in the absence of the need to focus the scanning beam (see "Scanography"). Scanners based on CIS technology do not have this advantage, however, as a rule, they still more compact and cheaper to manufacture, therefore, found application in universal or inexpensive devices.

Practical research

For clarity, we will give two examples of images obtained from scanners based on different technologies. The subject of scanning is a book of medium thickness.

If, when scanning a spread, press the book closer to the glass with the cover of the scanner moderately (without "fanaticism"), then the difference is noticeable on your face. Due to the absence of the need to focus the scanning beam, the CCD scanner produces excellent results.

Even with strong pressure, the scanner on the CIS technology finds it difficult to produce an absolutely focused image. At the same time, both the book and the cover of the scanner got caught during scanning, because the force for the clamping has to be applied quite considerable.

In summary, we can say that both types of scanners are quite suitable for scanning flat documents. But for scanning photographs, films and book spreads, it is better to choose a scanner with a CCD matrix due to the greater depth of field and more accurate color reproduction.

Scanner Resolution

The resolution or resolution of the scanner is the number of dots that light sensors can read from each horizontal strip of the image (the image is read line by line). Resolution is measured in dots per inch (dpi - Dots per Inch) (see *).

Actually, the higher the scanner resolution, the more it will be possible to enlarge the picture without losing quality, which is convenient, for example, during further processing in the editor or for printing. For simplicity, we will give analogies from the world of photography. The resolution of the scanner can be compared with the resolution of the matrix of a digital camera: the larger it is, the higher the resolution of the image can be obtained in an "honest way", without software tweaks.

There are two types of resolution: optical and interpolation. Optical resolution ("optical zoom" in digital camera) is the hardware characteristic of the device. It depends on the number of light sensors per inch of the scanned image horizontally. Interpolation the resolution is obtained by interpolating the real resolution up to, usually, higher by bilinear, bicubic and other algorithms (“digital zoom” in digital). The result is an artificially increased number of pixels.

How many DPI does it take to screw in a light bulb?

Let's take an example of the Epson Perfection V850 Pro scanner. Scanner hardware resolution - up to 6400 x 9600 dpi, where 6400 dpi is the horizontal scanning resolution, which is related to the density of the photosensitive elements in the scanner matrix, and 9600 dpi is the vertical scanning resolution, which depends on the accuracy of the carriage movement and the processing of scan results. You should focus on the first number, because this, in essence, is the actual ("optical") resolution of the flatbed scanner. The interpolation resolution of 12800 dpi is the resolution obtained as a result of software processing of a scanned original by increasing it four times (two in width and two in length). It does not lead to an improvement in image quality, but it can help when scanning graphic sketches (lines are smoother), as well as when enlarging small images when you are not at hand graphic editor, but you need to look at the scanned object better.

And now let's remember that for high-quality photo printing of A4 / A3 format with optimal resolution printer considered 300-600 dpi. Those. all that is more is the lot of cool photographers, expensive glossy magazines, etc. And now let's estimate what resolution the image will have, which is intended for printing in A4 format at 600 dpi:

Wow, you get such an image at 4961x7016 \u003d 34 megapixels.

And now let's figure out which image, ahem, resolution we will get when scanning A4 in 6400 dpi:

I didn't want to scan something right away ... 4000 gigapixelsprobably too much for one A4 sheet!

Why, then, do scanners need such crazy resolution rates?

It's simple - for scanning small size films and photos! When scanning 35x24mm film, of course, 600 dpi is not enough. Therefore, the scanner specifications indicate the maximum supported resolution in film scan mode. For scanning documents and medium-sized photos, more than 600 dpi is sufficient, as we could see in the example above.

Scanner type - flatbed or streaming

In order to determine the type of scanner, we recommend that you pay attention to 2 parameters: the type of scanned documents and the area that you are ready to allocate for a new "tenant". Stream scanners are compact devices that are easy to place on your desktop. A flatbed scanner will take up at least 2 times more space than a streaming counterpart, but there are much more options for materials that it will scan.

The table shows data on Epson scanners.

Flatbed scanners

Distinctive feature flatbed scanner is a flat glass on which the scanned object is placed - a page with text or an image. The inside of the scanner lid is solid color and serves as a versatile background for reading the size of the scanned document. The cover can be removed to scan bulky items such as books. Flatbed devices are divided into scanners for home (Perfection series) and business (WorkForce and Expression).

Home and professional photo scanners

The Epson Perfection series flatbed home scanners scan documents, brochures and magazines, digitize and process photos, slides and films, removing damage and restoring color (using the supplied software).

The younger model of the line - the Epson Perfection V19 scanner can be connected to a computer with a micro-USB cable, the device does not require an independent power supply from the mains. The only scanner in the Epson Perfection line based on CIS technology. At the same time, it scans in 4800x resolution and provides additional features to enhance images with the Epson Easy Photo Fix software. Using the software, you can remove dust particles from the scanned image, restore color and correct background illumination. If you're looking for an inexpensive but grumpy flatbed scanner, the Epson Perfection V19 is probably the perfect fit for you.

The top model of professional photo scanners - Epson Perfection V850 Pro is based on CCD technology for professional photo processing, films and slides (35 mm, medium format and 9 × 12 cm format). The scanner can be adjusted to the height of the film holder to adjust the position of the focus point, which helps to achieve clearer scanning. Special plates of the holder press the film against the glass, which avoids the appearance of Newton's rings during scanning.
Two built-in lenses scan originals with high optical resolution - 6400dpi for film and 4800dpi for photos. The high optical density of 4.0 DMax allows the scanner to accurately reproduce a wide range of shades, especially in dark areas of the image. Anti-glare coating High Pass Optics for lens and mirror provides best quality the resulting images.

Models flatbed scanners quite a lot, and it is important to choose a model for your tasks so as not to overpay for expensive optics for processing slides if you plan to scan only documents.

Business flatbed scanners

Business devices are designed for high loads - up to 8000 scans per day! And suitable for processing:
  • standard paper documentation,
  • dilapidated or voluminous samples (books, magazines),
  • sewn official documents that cannot be severed.

One more distinctive feature scanners for business - the ability to connect over the network, i.e. the scanner becomes available to several computers in a workgroup at once. There are scanners with built-in interfaces (connectors), or you can purchase and connect a special panel with network connectors separately. With its help, the scanner can be connected via ethernet networks and scan in email, on FTP server, to Share Point and to network folders.

In the line of flatbed scanners for business, for example, the Epson WorkForce DS-7500 scanner with a maximum load of 4000 documents per day will perfectly cope with all these tasks. You can use the 100-sheet duplex automatic document feeder to scan stacks of pages - sensors simultaneously read the front and back of the sheet. The ultrasonic sensor will alert you if it detects stuck or sticky pages. Places fragile, bulky, or stapled materials on the tablet glass. The optical resolution of this model is 1200 dpi (no more is needed, since documents are scanned, not film or small photographs), and the interpolation resolution is 9600 dpi.

With the help of software functions it is possible:

  • automatically align the image,
  • customize the color palette of the document,
  • remove shadow from the binding place when scanning books,
  • selectively remove red, green, or blue from a document to make the document more readable.

Stream scanners

Streaming, broaching, roller or as they are sometimes called - document scanners are designed for fast multipage document processing. A stack of materials is loaded into the ADF and fed page by page through the die. Originals should be opaque (semi-transparent) because they use the method of reflecting light from a surface.

By the way, fax is a type of streaming scanner.

Despite their compact size (usually small desktop devices), they can work with almost any material from business and plastic cards to special letterheads and materials up to 1.5 mm thick and up to A3 format.

Like all business flatbed scanners, streaming models are equipped with:

  • ultrasonic sensor of stuck pages,
  • skip blank page technology,
  • function of splitting tasks for saving to different files
  • automatic document format detection system,
  • system of recognition and correction of document tilt.
Automatic document feeder allows you to scan almost any material in the office in duplex mode on both sides in one pass. Plastic cards (up to 1.5 mm thick), business cards, A4 and even A3 format documents and many other materials and documents will be scanned as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Let's talk about the most interesting models streaming scanners for business:

Epson WorkForce DS-560 is Epson's first document scanner with wireless connection and scanning over Wi-Fi. Moreover, you can scan directly to mobile devices and tablets based on Android and iOS. Processing speed - up to 25 ppm simplex, or up to 50 ipm duplex at 300 dpi. The scanner supports scanning in color, grayscale or black and white and provides a maximum resolution of up to 600 dpi. The automatic document feeder has a capacity of 50 sheets. This model has a maximum daily load of 3,000 pages.

The flagship in our line of streaming scanners is the Epson WorkForce DS-860 with a maximum load of up to 6,000 pages per day (imagine 12 reams of 500 sheets of paper!) And an 80-sheet paper tray. The scanner is capable of processing documents at speeds up to 65 pages per minute for color and black and white A4 documents or 130 images per minute at a resolution of 300 dpi.

Like most Epson document scanners, the WorkForce DS-860 is available in two versions: with the ability to connect via USB and in the network version.

Duplex scanning trick

With duplex scanning, Epson A4-format streaming scanners produce a digital copy of a document in A3!

Small but smart!

For those who, due to their duty, are often forced to travel on business trips, the Epson WorkForce DS-30 portable scanner is perfect. It weighs 325 grams. and easily fits in one bag along with a laptop. Its dimensions are only 276 x 36.5 x 50 mm (length, depth, height), so it can even be hidden in a drawer if there is little work space on the table. Epson WorkForce DS-30 is one of the smallest and lightest scanners in its class.

It works from a regular USB 2.0 cable connected directly to a computer or laptop. There is only 1 button on the scanner body, but it can be programmed for a number of tasks: specify not only scanning modes, but also the addresses of mailing digitized documents and images, insert them automatically into certain applications for further processing.

The standard Epson Scan driver is capable of automatically aligning and detecting document size, enlarging fonts, protecting PDF file, as well as perform other equally important functions.

It will take 13 seconds to scan an A4 document in Epson WorkForce DS-30. And the maximum possible resolution will be 600x600 dpi. In addition, the scanner supports all widely used paper document formats (A4, A5, A6, A8, B5), and also allows you to digitize business and bank cards.
