The phone was not intended for mass sale in the countries where these sales were made officially: the standard price for a device of this class was supplemented by rather high tariffs from operators (the phone itself forced to use the operator's services more, for example, data transmission). As a result, the iPhone echoed the marketing formula of other Apple products - expensive, non-trivial, not for everyone.

Outside the coverage area of \u200b\u200bAT&T and other (few) official operators, a “gray” market reigned: mobile phone shipments were streaming to places where consumers were especially greedy for functional fashion devices. It is not known for certain how this was explained - whether it was a conspiracy theory (Apple's attempt by guerrilla methods to expand the distribution area of \u200b\u200bthe iPhone) or a spontaneous reaction of the market, which demanded a very good product (this option seems to us closer to the truth). However, the iPhone has gained considerable popularity and has become a 100% recognizable phone in countries far from Cupertino.

The iPhone launch was one of the most emotional debuts in the history of mobile communications. There were aspects in this process that surprised me with their non-triviality. To begin with - the very method of promoting the novelty, which began to be produced by a company that was taking the first steps in the global cell phone market.

The very emergence of a new player of relatively large size - after the bankruptcy of Siemens Mobile (nearly killed by BenQ / Qisda, which almost suffocated from a too large swallowed piece), the Motorola crisis and the depression of Sony Ericsson - seems at the moment unthinkable. Numerous companies of the second echelon do not leave this second echelon from year to year (and from year to year their market share is steadily decreasing).

"Success stories" in relation to mobile phones can be remembered only in the case of Samsung and LG, which entered this segment relatively recently (in the late 90s - early 2000s). However, by the standards of the cell phone market, this is already a dense past.

The appearance of the iPhone on the market, where everything seemed to be settled for a long time, had a rather serious effect. The hype around the device was partly due to its innovative concept (the touch screen in the phone is not a new phenomenon, but only Apple made this screen really convenient for working without a stylus), but above all - the inability to accept the fact that the most interesting phone in recent times was invented by the company which had nothing to do with mobile communications.

Of course, the iPhone had enough flaws, which, after months of "grinding" on various forums, are already known even to those people who did not hold this device in their hands and do not plan to do so. These are extremely modest camera capabilities, annoying cutbacks in Bluetooth, paranoid proprietary Apple and obvious flaws in attempts to "creatively interpret" things that have become standards of the mobile industry (for example, working with SMS).

Apple's opponents had an almost subconscious irritation: why did other leading companies (among them Motorola in torment and Nokia with a permanent sales crisis in the US) not think of the release of such a device, and why the manufacturer, which ignores some aspects of sending SMS, did it?

The twenty times redistributed market, in which marketers found (or created) all kinds of niches (selected by gender, psychological and anthropological characteristics) with vigorous roadmaps and strategies, turned out to be redrawn by a device that set the tone for an incredibly high excitement even before its appearance (it was equivalent to an advertising campaign of about $ 400 million - Microsoft intends to spend $ 300 million to slightly reduce the degree of demonization of Vista).

Now LG, which showed its touchscreen phone before Apple and even allowed itself to be indignant at "plagiarism" by Cupertino, writes a separate line on the number of sold "touchscreen" devices.

After quite a long time, the iPhone 3G ended up in our hands. The main question that torments us is whether it is worth changing the old iPhone to a new one? The main question that torments the suffering buyers is how to get a cheaper phone? Let's start with the second one.

The white 16GB iPhone 3G we tested sells for about $ 1700-1800. And this is not the case when sellers get incredible margins, since the device has an astronomical cost "at the entrance".

As you know, with the price drop of the phone in the US to $ 199 / $ 299 (with the terms of the contract, which, in aggregate, costs more than the contract of the first iPhone), Apple and its partners have significantly increased "security measures". Activation of the device in the United States is now performed only upon presentation of a social security number, credit card and ID, and it is unrealistic to take the purchased phone outside the AT&T or Apple store without activation.

In Europe, the situation is similar: a few "open" phones cost crazy money, and "free" iPhones are sold with bonded contracts (bonded in the event that you want to export the device for sale abroad). As an example shows, these contracts are bypassed by our enterprising citizens (for example, taking their phone with them after several months of student work in Britain), but this volume is not enough to meet demand.

Moreover, the old stocks of the first generation iPhone are now also sold at a price that is not comparable to the original one (a few months before the 3G version debut, the phone could be bought for an average of $ 600-700). There will be no salvation from this oppression - unless some tectonic shifts occur in our markets. For example, the expected debut of the iPhone in the retail chains of Russian operators and associated retailers.

Should current iPhone owners buy the 3G version? In general, no. The phone doesn't have a lot of hardware changes. 3G communication is in demand in Ukraine and in those few Russian cities where 3G networks are deployed, but not in Belarus.

The GPS module works well (apart from the lengthy process of connecting with satellites), but at the moment the device can only use Google maps, which are detailed for Russia, but not for Belarus and Ukraine. Do not forget that these cards consume a huge amount of traffic. In addition, the old iPhone knew how to do positioning - using the operator's base stations for reference.

Unfortunately, we have not been able to test the 3G functionality of the phone and so far we have no right to comment on those horror stories that regularly come from the USA and Europe. However, communication in our native 2G standard is completely normal and does not differ from the first iPhone.

The 3G version has other minor differences. Some of them are quite enjoyable. First of all, it is the white color of the back of the case. After consumer tests, we insist that the white version is better. Scratches are completely invisible on it (they are noticeable on the black model), it is less easily soiled, and for real religious fanatics of white "apple" plastic, the "back" of the phone can give a feeling of deep satisfaction.

As you can easily see in the photo, the edges of the iPhone 3G are somewhat beveled compared to the old version. Visually, they make the phone thinner, although the harsh reality (and the side-by-side comparison) quite rightly proves that the new device is thicker than its predecessor.

Another nice thing - the headphone jack finally accepts the plugs not of the notorious white Apple iPhone headphones, but of your loved ones. In addition, the appearance of the slots at the bottom of the phone has changed (the speakers, by the way, have become noticeably louder, but I would still like a more assertive sound).

From the hardware changes, we were able to recall the differences between the displays. The new screen is slightly greener than the old one, but such profound differences can only be captured by comparing the phones side by side. There were no problems with the picture on the 3G version: as in the first iPhone, it is clear and juicy.

The firmware deserves a special mention. The standard for iPhone 3G is firmware 2.0.0 (currently 2.0.2 is already available, which, by the way, should fix problems with 3G reception). This firmware can be installed on old iPhone (or iPod Touch) too. We had phones with firmware up to version 2 and iPhone of the first generation, flashed to version 2, at our disposal.

iPhone 3G does have a more efficient battery. If the previous model worked without recharging for about 2 days at an average load, the new one, with economical handling of the charge, will work for almost three days. True, this aspect is highly dependent on the intensity of Wi-Fi use and data transfer. In general, the duration of the player's work in the music listening mode has increased by four hours compared to the first version.

As it always happens, before the start of the iPhone 3G sales, there were many rumors about how the new device from Apple looks like, and what its characteristics are. The system is being updated constantly, hourly and nightly. And Apple is not in a hurry to rivet a whole range of motley devices, apparently, they understand a simple thing. One has only to spray the forces, start fussing with different segments - that's it, the house is gone. To follow fans and geeks demanding QWERTY, OLED displays, 64 gigabytes of memory is also a road to a bright kingdom called "nowhere", not a mass market.

As a result, the iPhone 3Gs, if we talk about our country, was far from being in favor. Officially, the model is not sold here, it is very expensive on the gray market, and there is no understanding of what to pay for. In addition, through the efforts of people who persistently instilled a love for the first generation iPhone in various forums, this device has turned into a kind of vulgar object either for a blonde or for a certain character in a fashion chronicle. A number of friends do not even imagine what else can be done with this thing, in addition to making calls, listening to music. There are many stereotypes that no one can break. As soon as a fifteen-year-old teenager becomes the owner of an iPod Shuffle, the realization of its importance and distinction immediately appears, which results in a huge number of meaningless discussions, disputes, wars and so on.

In addition, as I said earlier, with the release of the official iPhone 3G, many people lost interest in the mysterious overseas toy. There is no need to unlock, install special software, take it and use it, the programs are available in the AppStore, they are cheap, you can pay with a debit card - happiness. As soon as what I call "dungeon child syndrome" disappeared, the controversy subsided, the discussions subsided, and many sites entirely devoted to the iPhone disappeared. The second wave with the arrival of the iPhone 3Gs, which has not yet been officially sold in our country, did not happen precisely for the reasons indicated above. IPhone 3G users do not understand what it is, for which you have to pay about thirty thousand rubles or more. Interest has subsided, the fashion has passed, so now you can more or less calmly communicate with representatives of other camps or with experienced users of iPhone 2G, "a true iPhone" at all times. Regarding fashion - indeed, many people avoid buying this device precisely because it is too common. I don’t remember how many times I’ve been in a get-together, where every other person had such a device, you will inevitably think, but should I make some exoticism the main one?

Therefore, I would not like this material to be a kind of subject for disputes or wars. In Russia, I believe, there is already a community of Apple technology users, many people choose the company's products not only for design and differences, but also for capabilities, some of which are not found in other devices. For example, if we talk about the iPhone, then these are the following points, I will list them:

One can argue about mail, I did not write about some other applications. • Not very long operating time with active use, in my case it is a day and a half in standby mode.
• A number of small points: when using several mailboxes with a set minimum check interval, it is difficult to get through to you, someone does not like that all banners are not displayed in the browser. And, of course, multitasking is a key drawback for which the iPhone is often kicked. For example, you cannot start ICQ, then minimize it and not lose the connection. No, when you press the button, the program just closes, then you need to start it again. We have been hearing promises to add multitasking for a long time, but so far things are still there. To be more precise, it is as such, you can, for example, listen to music and use a browser.
• In fact, it turns out that it is best to use the iPhone paired with the supplied headset, it is difficult to choose headphones to improve sound quality. This is a VERY subjective opinion. This is not only about the sound quality, but also about the use of the headset in general.
• Microcracks on the case next to the mute lever, the SIM card slot, each of the three iPhone 3G samples suffered from this deficiency. Almost imperceptible, not affecting work in any way, but still, their presence is a little angry. Note that the iPhone 2G had a different problem: if not handled properly, the case is easily covered with scratches and abrasions. But to the credit of the apparatus, I will note that it is very difficult to "kill" it. So, a simple test: two clean devices, we run a freshly washed finger across the display of the iPhone 3G. There is a trace. Swipe your finger across the iPhone 3Gs display. Naturally, the lacquered back surface quickly becomes covered with prints, but it's problematic to get the display dirty. By the way, about the case, packaging and delivery set. By and large, nothing has changed, everything is the same as in 3G. I can't say anything about microcracks, iPhone 3Gs has only been on hand for about a week.

Actually, the update here is minimal, it is now possible to adjust the volume directly from the remote control on the cable, which is convenient, previously you had to take out the phone or grope buttons in your pocket. The operating time of the iPhone 3Gs, in my opinion, has remained unchanged. I deliberately did not look at the official data, but simply used the device as usual. For me, the usual mode is constantly checking three mailboxes, using a browser, music, Wi-Fi and Push on, about an hour of talk a day. Actually, in the late afternoon, the charge indicator strip decreased by more than half, and the iPhone was charged all night. He spent the evening and night in quiet mode, only occasional calls and SMS, mail, Wi-Fi were turned off. And already in the morning, at nine o'clock in the morning, a message about ten percent of the battery charge appeared on the screen. I did not torture further, I connected a USB cable. In general, don't count on long run times. The matter is, in principle, fixable, there are a lot of accessories for the device on the market, these are covers with a battery, and so on.

I completely forgot, another interesting feature in 3Gs is the ability to turn on the display of the battery charge as a percentage. A useful thing, previously, in order to see the percentages, you had to "break" the device in software.

Compass

There is a compass. What is it about this - I do not quite understand, I must, apparently, go mushrooming with the iPhone 3Gs in order to appreciate it. If I suddenly get lost and don't return, then the testing has failed.

As faithful comrades suggest, a compass is not just a compass, but a piece of equipment for the introduction of "augmented reality technology." For example, I recommend looking at the Acrossair website, where both a compass and a camera are used to indicate the direction in the direction of the nearest metro. This is just an example, but the possibilities are impressive - for a pedestrian suffering from topographic cretinism, this is a godsend.

In the compass settings, you can select magnetic or true north (I don't know why), coordinates are displayed, and you can immediately go to the map.

Nike + iPod

A corresponding item appeared right in the settings, that is, the iPhone 3Gs can work with the Nike + iPod Bluetooth sensor, an original watch without installing additional software. I'm all going to buy myself a Nike with this functionality, there is a person on our forum who has been using this economy for a long time (ZenPC, hello). I believe that in the fall we will write an article about this side of the device for a couple. The camera module has been changed, now it's 3 megapixels instead of two. You can evaluate the quality of the pictures yourself, I will only say that for a three-ruble note this is more than a normal result. A switch lever for video shooting (VGA, 30 fps) has appeared in the camera menu, and you can also evaluate the videos yourself. Naturally, these are not key features for the iPhone, but you can shoot masterpieces, you just need a normally tuned tool called the "head". For example, Flickr has a community called Photos taken with an Apple iPhone. More than seventy thousand photographs, there are incredibly beautiful frames, and you would not think that it was not taken by a photographic phone at all. In addition, there are a number of third-party programs for editing, effects, painting, and more.

In the settings, you can select the language of voice control, there are many languages \u200b\u200bthere. So what can you do and how does it work? Let's start with the features:

• Dialing a subscriber's number, you must say "Call, Julia", for example. This is not to say that everything is cloudless, much depends on how you pronounce the word. Some contacts are dialed the first time, some are not dialed at all, as if they were not there. I believe that optimization has not been done here yet; when typing in English, everything is much better.
• A set of numbers, you need to say "Number, eight nine zero, and so on." There are no questions at all here, it works perfectly, everything is fine.
• There are a lot of commands for the player, you can start or pause playback by voice, turn on Shuffle mode, make the player play similar songs (Genius), turn on such and such an album or playlist. Even when I wrote about VoiceOver in the iPod Shuffle, I made a suggestion about something similar in the iPhone - here it is, a clear confirmation. Voice control works fine, as long as it does not come to long names, for example, many mixes are called so for me. The device copes with ordinary albums without difficulty, when there is a relatively short and intelligible title, an understandable album, a playlist. Let's say I have playlists "Morning", "Day", "Evening" - there are no questions, great.

If the name of the subscriber you named is not entirely clear or if several similar names are found, the device will warn you about this and offer to choose.

Surely, there are still a number of improvements and changes to be made, however, even in the current state, voice control of iPhone 3Gs is extremely convenient in some cases, its presence and implementation pleases. True, there are no instructions here, you can see the names of the commands on the display, when you say a word, the waves "jump", demonstrating that the device heard you. And instruction, in my opinion, is needed.

• The speed of work has really increased greatly, due to this, daily use has become much more pleasant, much more pleasant. This is especially true when working with heavy applications. Hopefully, game developers will take advantage of the iPhone 3Gs' hardware capabilities to the fullest.
• The display coating really protects you from tedious and lengthy cleaning, makes the device neat; I don't know how, but this thing works.

• I liked the implementation of voice control, let's hope that recognition will work better in localized devices.
• Nike + iPod, having this app out of the box is a good addition.

The rest of the add-ons, this video and the compass, are less important. Not many people shoot video on the phone, in addition, for the iPhone there were already applications that allow you to do this trick. It's good, of course, that this functionality is there initially, but it is secondary here (to put it mildly).

For example, it's time for me to return the phone to the owners, and I am horrified to think about how I can change back to the iPhone 3G. When, how and for how much to buy 3Gs is your business, you can take a "European", you can wait for the start of official sales, it all depends on the amount in your wallet. It is possible, in the end, to stay on 3G while waiting for new devices, but no one knows when it will be. I doubt that a new iPhone model will appear in Russia by mid-2010.

The second one is the ability to watch videos, this is a perfectly working YouTube, given the size of the display (3.5 inches, resolution 480x320 pixels) and the speed of work, viewing becomes extremely pleasant. The third point: despite the seeming "unincorporatedness", the iPhone may well become your faithful companion in business. For example, using Apple's MobileMe service, you get the ability to sync mail, calendar, contacts, browser bookmarks between a laptop (in my case) and a phone. Thanks to him, right on the phone, you can use the iDisk program to store and view office documents and other files (including music). I am not campaigning for anyone, but to say that the iPhone is “for ladies” and cannot perform some mysterious “business functions” is at least ridiculous.

Another thing is that I would not recommend this device for purchase to everyone. For example, if your main tasks are to call, write SMS, then it is hardly worth spending money. I will not recommend 3Gs to “current fashionistas” - there are much more interesting novelties for you, such as Nokia N97, Samsung i8910 and so on. Apple's devices are no longer fashionable, forgotten, passed, it's time to understand. Anyway, it sold out for nine thousand, ugh, nightmare, cheap. For mods, this is a nightmare and not. Also, in no case should the adherents of Windows Mobile approach 3Gs - there is nowhere to dig, there is nothing to set up, so it is not worth it. If you are interested, surfing from a mobile device is important, normal, beautiful mail, multimedia capabilities, convenience and speed of work are important, then yes, iPhone 3Gs is your choice.

Apple managed to do the impossible: not only to infiltrate a seemingly already formed market, but also to reverse a number of established foundations. For example, this is the constant completion of the existing OS for a family of devices. And not abandoning it, inventing a new system, inventing new devices for a new system, completing a new system, not everything worked out, abandoning it, inventing a new system, new devices, completing, refusal - then ad infinitum.
