Description of the Svchost.exe process in Windows XP Professional Edition

This article describes the Svchost.exe process and its functions. Svchost.exe is the common host name for services that are started from dynamic-link libraries (DLL).

Note. The task list is not supported in Windows XP Home Edition. This article is intended for experienced users of corporate systems. The Svchost.exe file is located in the% SystemRoot% \\ System32 folder. During the download process, Svchost.exe, based on registry entries, lists the services that need to be started. Multiple instances of the Svchost.exe process can be started simultaneously. Each Svchost.exe session may contain several services. Thus, depending on how and where the Svchost.exe process is running, several separate services may be running. This grouping of services provides a higher level of control over them and facilitates debugging.

Svchost.exe groups are defined in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \\ Software \\ Microsoft \\ WindowsNT \\ CurrentVersion \\ Svchost

Each value in this section represents a separate Svchost group and is displayed when viewing active processes as a separate instance. Each of these values ​​is of type REG_MULTI_SZ and contains the services running in this Svchost group. Each Svchost group can contain one or more service names extracted from the following registry key, in which the subsection Parameters  contains value ServiceDLL:

To view a list of services running in svchost process, follow the steps below.

1. Click on the panel windows tasks  a button Start  and select item Run.
2. In field Open  Type CMD, and then press ENTER.
3. Type Tasklist / SVC, and then press ENTER.

Tasklist lists active processes. Parameter / Svc  used to display a list of active services in each process. For more information about the process, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
