Canonical classes, diverse acts, an abundance of procedurally generated dungeons, and a whole galaxy of new high demons added a lot of weight to the fragile structure outlined by the first part of the game. The sequel has lost some of the mystique of Diablo 1, which stemmed mainly from immersion in the underworld, instead offering the player the role of a hero battling the entire hierarchy of hell. Deciding not to send the player once again to the gloomy crypts of the original, the developers pulled the demons out, scattering them across gray human settlements, golden deserts and dense jungles.

With the return of Deckard Cain, the series has its own canon, as is usually the case with Blizzard games. Over the course of the action, the gothic menace of Diablo 1 evolved into something more colorful, but no less brutal. Raised on Tolkien and Baldur's Gate from the Forgotten Realms, my teenage brain devoured the dish served. Diablo 2 ditched the tinsel of heavy dialogue that I strongly associated with RPGs, allowing me instead to hack and slash thousands of enemies with magical weapons and cool spells.

This is a classic, although now it will require a couple of mods to play properly on widescreen monitors. It is a pity that in our time the resolution of the game does not allow you to enjoy a high-quality picture, but its sprites are still colorful and expressive. They remind me of the days when I was sitting at a CRT monitor, playing with friends on a buggy 56k modem. D2 is the bible that modern action-RPG developers draw inspiration from. The grim worlds of Path of Exile and Grim Dawn took a lot from this game, revered by many fans as Blizzard's best creation.

Diablo 2 was a great game, but it wasn't finished until after the release of the Lord of Destruction expansion. No, D2 wasn't finished by any means, but the story expansion that LoD offered was very, very organic.

The expansion brings the Assassin and Druid to the game, a glorious new act set in the barbarian sanctuary of Mount Arreat, and new ways to customize gear with runes and gems. The new classes were good, the fifth act was the best in the game, and the in-depth itemization system (which included a ton of new stuff and a bunch of recipes for the magical horadric cube) supported the new difficulty levels and extended the life of the game beyond the max level. "LoD" also brought with it a lot of small changes, which in general only improved the main game. It's hard to imagine Diablo 2 without a permanently visible minimap, a decently sized chest, and a wide range of skill binding keys.

The best experience I've had on PC has been with my friends' barbarian and druid in Lord of Destruction. Today, however, the multiplayer scene has thinned out significantly (although there are still some hero players). It's hard to go back to the past. Diablo 2: LoD was a great game for its time, but it doesn't stand still. Lord of Destruction lived and died with its community. The addon survived its golden age, gave us great memories and faded into the annals of PC gaming history. All gone, gone, like fanboy tears under the putrid rain of Baal's retribution. It's nothing you can do.

The Diablo 3 expansion was the culmination of a great reform. Blizzard drowned the auction house, revised the chances of item drops, and added new items. In addition, a new act appeared, a great villain Malthael and a fantastic crusader class. The game began to feel in a new way. The adventure mode broke the farming patterns that players are used to, sending players to already passed and forgotten places - making my way through the first act again, I thought that I had completely forgotten how big that spider cave was. Items were now dropped less frequently, but were more appropriate for your class. Unique items got new exotic properties, which, in combination with class skills, could inspire the creation of a new build.

The re-balanced, re-energized Diablo suddenly became a solid foundation upon which the new expansion was built. Like Lord of Destruction before it, Reaper of Souls offered players the best locations in the game. The streets of Westmarch have reached new heights of intricacy and complexity while remaining organic - a breath of fresh air after the endlessly repetitive platforms of the fourth act. The fight atop the colossal battering ram was beautiful, as was the final winding path to Malthael, which was a wonderful departure from the flaming crimson hues of most boss arenas in the main game. The further the player went, the more background performances unfolded in front of him. And as a bonus, the ominous fog and energy balls on Malthael were a real challenge.

The heavy, clanging crusader fits perfectly into the battles of Diablo 3. The sprites in "D2" were fine, but they couldn't jump and tumble down the hallways. And what a beauty - to send a crusader into the sky, and then see how he falls on the enemies with a thunderous blow. Not the coolest skill of his, but like many skills in D3, it's a pleasure to use it all the time. The crusader's ghostly armies, powerful skills, and passion for the hacker created a fresh style of close combat, while successfully remaking the dreary paladin from the second part.

This list is the result of a battle between heart and mind. My fond memories of the good old days of Lord of Destruction kept trying to get me to push this addon up a notch, but if I had to recommend one game in the series right now (and that was the purpose of this article), then my choice would have fallen on Diablo 3, supplemented and reworked by Reaper of Souls. One of the differences between Diablo 3 and World of Warcraft was that the first expansion for it, Reaper of Souls, was not so much about visiting any new places, but about who we fight. From the very beginning, we were opposed by the angel of death Malthael and the angelic forces that swore allegiance to him.

Yes, we went through Westmarch through the Bloody Marsh and finally got to Pandemonium itself. But it was the coming battle that mattered, not the location. Although we will talk about locations, they will be less important than potential opponents. What other devilry can attack a Nephalem?

Great and Lesser Creatures of Evil

Let's remember how Reaper of Souls ended - Malthael finally realized that he was unable to overcome the nephalem, and did the unthinkable for some. He shattered the Black Soul Stone, thus releasing the Evils Greater and Lesser, which were imprisoned in the stone by the end of Diablo 3's main story.

What does it threaten? Well, at best, as a result of this Diablo, with whom we fought in Diablo 3, the entity that possessed the power of all seven combined evils will be able to torture us again.

Why is this the best option for the development of the event? In the end, this entity was so strong that it was able to storm Heaven and almost destroy the Crystal Arch, the fall of which would mark the victory of the forces of evil in the Eternal Confrontation. Well, all because we know that the Nephalem is capable of defeating this entity. He had successfully fought her head to head in the past and defeated the Prime Evil.

The second situation is much worse with respect to the chaos it potentially creates. It's about releasing all seven Great Spawns of Evil separately, throughout Sanctuary. The Black Soul Stone was associated with Sanctuary when it was destroyed during a ritual to consume all human souls, whose owners died in the process. When Malthael shattered the stone, many Greater and Lesser Evils could be released and fall not back to the Underworld, but directly to Sanctuary.

They can cut, corrupt and enslave people all over the world at the same time, preparing to unleash a war against each other in order to find out which of the Great Creatures will rule the already battered world, which not so long ago felt the betrayal of an angel.

Malthael nearly wiped out all of humanity - it's possible that a skilled liar like Belial could even convince part or even all of humanity to rebel against the angels and the Angirian Council.

The evilspawn might not even have to fight - instead, they could create a stronghold on Sanctuary, and send hundreds of potential Nephalem from it to war in order to destroy the angels once and for all. Can even a Nephalem be able to do this?

But things could be even worse. Diablo was able to return as the Prime Evil because he controlled the creation of the body of the ideal host - Leah, daughter of Adria and Aidan, conceived while the warrior was possessed by the essence of Diablo himself. Without such an essence carrier, each of the Greater and Lesser Evils can go back to the Netherworld to be reborn. And they don't necessarily respawn separately.

Tafamet

At the dawn of the universe before the advent of Sanctuary, Pandemonium or the Underworld, Tafamet and Anu fought in eternal confrontation. They were two separate parts of the ancient creator of all things - Anu was a brilliant warrior, perfect and delightful. Well, everything that Anu was not inherent in was part of Tafamet. The seven-headed demon-dragon, she personified all evil, debauchery and destruction. Her destruction gave birth to the Underworld itself, taking the form of her colossal corpse.

Now imagine if she came back. This is original evil: an entity for which there is no concept of "crime"; a monster without any profile. Horror, Hatred, Destruction, Anguish, Falsehood, Sin and Pain - all these are not separate features of Tafamet. This creature literally personified the entire Underworld, and when Diablo reassembled the Great Evils into one essence, he could unwittingly open the door for the return of his progenitor.

And if Tafamet were to return, it would take the power of a being with even greater potential than Anu to defeat her; creature that embodies both good and evil.

As bleak as the prospects described above may seem, they are not the only potential threats, much less the only components of the Nephalem's interests.

We know very little about Evil. Was he a demon? Shen the Miser claimed that Evil won the love of the Xiansai goddess Liria, while being in the guise of the Xiansai god of passion. But he could not support the said love, for by nature his feelings were envy, and he only wanted to become a second moon in order to follow Lyria through the night sky, where he could not otherwise go.

When Lyria was courted by the trickster god Zey, Evil retaliated by killing everything that was dear to him, even Lyria, and Zey managed to imprison Evil in the very stone that he gave Lyria as a reminder of the time they spent together.

We've made sure there's at least some truth to this, according to Shen the Miser in Reaper of Souls after we found the shattered gem and Lyria's ghost. Therefore, the task of tracking down and eliminating the Evil may well be a suitable task for us.

Shen mentioned that in pursuit of this gem, he visited the Skovos Islands (the birthplace of the Amazons and oracles; the place where the Horadrim visited, according to the mentions in Reaper of Souls - and did not return from), and the stone was created in Xiansai, from where also one of the game classes originates - the wizard. Chasing Evil around the world could very well be the topic of the next expansion.

Leah's fate

Finally, we have an unfinished storyline from the original Diablo 3 - when Diablo took over Leah's body, what happened to her soul? It is somehow wrong if at least one Great Creature of Evil could destroy the soul of a mortal in this way, especially when people, by their nature, are able to choose between good and evil, and Leah was not given such a choice.

Did Leah's soul fall into the Black Soul Gem when Diablo and the essences of the Greater Evils left him? Where is she now? Has she suffered a completely unfair fate for a girl who spent most of the game trying to stop the Great Evils and avenge her uncle Deckard, and now she languishes in the Underworld?

With the destruction of the Black Soul Stone, Diablo, as we know, most likely broke free.

The hunt for Leah's soul could turn into an epic confrontation with the will of the Lord of Terror, who wants to use the soul in some nefarious deed (or, perhaps, in order to mock us). Giving Leah the opportunity to return to life, or at least free herself from the Underworld, is, in my opinion, a worthy goal for an addition. And given that we have absolutely no idea what fate eventually befell her, our quest could take us anywhere in the world of Sanctuary, or even beyond.

There are also a few more options. We could just go to Skovos to look for the missing Horadrim, or to recruit one of the legendary oracles, especially if a new class is introduced in the new expansion.

Amazons have already appeared as playable characters in Diablo 2 and it has been said that we won't see the updated classes from Diablo 1 and 2, so the oracle looks like a very likely candidate for a new class in the next expansion.

Either we will end up in Xiansai, or we will go to the lost Kurast and further, to the Arid Steppes. After all, wherever we go, we know that the world of Sanctuary holds wonders unimaginable. How about, say, the lost city of the Nephalem?
