WhatsApp: a Ukrainian emigrant's project that made him a dollar billionaire

Messenger what's up- one of the most convenient and modern means of communication. He is over ten years old. In 2009, Apple agreed to submit this app to the AppleStore. This is where the WhatsApp success story begins. It is currently used by more than a billion people around the world.

Interestingly, its creator was an emigrant from Ukraine, Jan Kum. The first time in America he had a hard time. But after buying the application by Facebook for a round sum, Yang turned into a dollar billionaire. He signed a contract with Zuckerberg's company in the house where he once lived on ration cards.

Popularity Secret

Before the creation of WhatsApp, most people exchanged text messages in the form of SMS. It was expensive. Especially if you had to send a message to another country. The new application made it possible to exchange text messages almost free of charge. In addition, there is an opportunity to perform the following actions:

  • Make video calls.
  • Send voice messages.
  • Exchange documents.
  • Create groups.

Information was transmitted instantly. The development is suitable for both private communication and business. Not surprisingly, Facebook became interested in her in 2014. After all, the company felt a competitor and did not want to lose the audience.

Interesting deciphering of the name. This is a play on words. The sound of the name is similar to the English "Whats Up?". That is, "How are you?" Only instead of "Up" is used "App", that is, "application".

WhatsApp can also be used on a computer. The application is synchronizing with the phone. The phone itself must have Android OS, Ios.

How it all began

Initially, WhatsApp was not a messenger. The idea came to Koum while visiting the gym. Cell phones were banned there. And the man often missed calls. He had an idea: to create an address book in which one could set statuses. For example, that a person is busy. The programming language Erlang was used to create it.

In later versions, when the status of a contact from the address book changed, a push notification was sent. Users love this feature. And they began to send messages using these notifications. So WhatsApp began to turn into a messenger.

Initially, it was important for the creator that there were no ads. And so he did not go to sell his development. Whatsapp is simple but very functional. This is quite consistent with Kuma's important idea. He wanted to create one project, but one that was perfect.
