And it was like this. I had to dump a large ZIP archive of more than 3 gigabytes onto a USB flash drive from one computer in our office (there was a bunch of all kinds of documentation from previous years). The average write speed to my flash drive is about 3-4 megabytes per second. Reasonably reasoning that at this speed the archive will be copied in about 17-25 minutes (roughly speaking, 1000-1500 seconds :)), I put the copying on my own in half an hour before the end of the working day ...

As a result, this ill-fated file was copied for almost an hour! This made me stay late at work, and the next day to be puzzled by the question of why files can be copied slowly and how to speed up copying if necessary. Let's try to figure it out ...

What affects the copy speed

What is copying a file in general? This is nothing more than reading a bit sequence in certain sectors of a disk drive and then writing them to other sectors or to another medium. In theory, the speed of reading and writing depends only on the storage device itself: that is, its factory performance parameters. However, in practice, everything is much more complicated.

In real conditions, a number of other parameters must be taken into account:

• the degree of media wear;
• the quality of the data transmission loops;
• the quality of the carrier's nutrition;
• correct BIOS settings;
• availability of motherboard drivers;
• set data transfer mode;
• the degree of "clutter" Windows.

All of the above, together or separately, may affect the decrease in the speed of data copying. For example, the longer we use a storage medium, the greater the likelihood that some of the sectors in it will become unreadable, which will slow down any file operations. Poor contact of the data loop can lead to short circuits and loss of information, and insufficient power will prevent the device from operating at full capacity.

The problem may also be hidden in the BIOS. Almost all modern computers have hard drives that are controlled by a SATA controller. In BIOS, this controller must be activated ("Enabled") and work in "AHCI" mode (if, of course, you have a modern OS Windows 7 or higher):

Also take care of the question of checking for the presence of drivers for the chipset. If they are not installed, the south bridge of your PC may not work correctly on standard Windows drivers, which may well lead to problems in working with storage media and USB devices.

If all of the above did not suit you, then another way to solve the problem of slow copying by standard means may be to change the data transfer mode. To do this, call the Device Manager, open the "IDE ATA / ATAPI controllers" section, call the properties of the controller responsible for the operation of your hard disk and check the set data transfer mode in the "Additional parameters" tab. If there is a PIO and it does not work to change it, then you most likely have a failure in the system. You can try to fix it by removing the device with PIO transfer mode and restarting the computer. If this does not help, then the problem can be solved only by reinstalling Windows.

The last option to speed up copying for owners of Windows 7 and higher (though, in the "Ten", it seems, this is no longer there) is to disable the "Remote Differential Compression" component. Now let's imagine that everything works as it should, but copying is still slow ... Why? Everything here comes down to the principle of copying. In the normal mode, it happens according to the following scheme: a small block of information is read into the operational or cache memory, and then it is written to the right place (a new block on a hard disk or on a removable medium) and then in a cycle.

For small files, this direct copy scheme is fine, but for large files it can slow down. Is there any way to speed up copying them? In theory, yes! To do this, you need to use some fast storage medium that will cache the entire file at once (or at least most of it) and write from its own fast memory in a continuous stream.

One of the most versatile and affordable devices of this kind in a computer is RAM. With standard copying, data can also be transmitted through it, but in the form of a stream of small clusters of information. If we first read and place the entire file in it, then we can get a significant acceleration when writing it in continuous form! Exactly this approach is implemented by existing programs for copy optimization, which I propose to consider (by the way, similar algorithms began to be used in Windows, starting with the "Eight", but they are still far from ideal).

Before installing, I decided to take a control measurement. We took 20 small (200 - 800 KB) image files with a total size of 16 megabytes and one large ISO image of 3 GB. Copy time within one hard disk partition was 2 seconds. for pictures and 2 min. 3 sec. for a large file. On a USB flash drive (average write speed - 5 MB / s), the recording lasted 3.4 seconds. and 9 minutes. 35 sec. respectively. Let's try now to copy with special utilities and compare the difference.

Copy accelerators

The most famous copy accelerator program is TeraCopy:

On the official website, you can download its free version, which has basic functionality, and then (if desired) buy a PRO edition with additional functions. But. we are only interested in free software, so we will refuse purchases and try to work as it is.

When installing, we will be offered to install TeraCopy in normal or portable mode, as well as create the necessary shortcuts and associate with some files (it is better to remove the association). After the installation is complete, the main and only working window will start, which, fortunately, has a Russian-language interface.

To copy through the program, you need to drag the necessary files into its window and specify the destination folder where these files are to be placed. In addition, TeraCopy is associated with the Explorer and, when dragging or copying with hot keys, offers to do this using the program.

Of the additional features of the free version, it is worth noting the ability to perform a number of actions upon completion of copying (turning off the PC, opening the drive, testing the integrity of the copied files, etc.). Also in the options it is possible to activate the playback of sound upon completion of the task, as well as use the system cache for operation.

As for the results, on Windows 8.1 x64 they slightly surpassed the standard ones, although there is an increase. So, copying 20 pictures (16 MB) within the hard disk took 1.5 seconds, and a 3 GB image - 1 minute. 48 sec. On a USB flash drive, recording lasted 2.95 seconds for images and 8 minutes. 32 sec. for a large file, respectively.

Next we will test the Japanese program, which, according to the developers' assurances, implements the fastest file copying algorithm - FastCopy:

The program is completely free and has a separate 64-bit version. It is delivered in the form of an archive with a portable program and a setup.exe file, which allows you to install and register FastCopy in the system (add a copy item in the context menu) or remove all associations.

Unfortunately, the interface language is only English, but not particularly confusing. The essence is simple: you need to select the source folder ("Source") and the destination, into which you want to copy the content of the source. In order not to copy all files from the specified directory, you can activate the filter ("Filter"), which allows you to set the masks of inclusion and exclusion (for example, * .exe or Image *. *). Not very convenient, but you can use it.

With regard to the results. Copying small files to another folder took 1.8 seconds, and a large one was copied in 1 minute. 49 sec. Copying to a USB flash drive ended with the results of 3.8 seconds. for pictures and 9 min. 12 sec. for the image. As you can see, despite the assurances of the developers, the results are not the best, but there are.

German quality has always been appreciated. Let's see if it is in the Supercopier program, which is "originally" from Germany:

The program is delivered as an installer or portable version. There are both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. There is also a paid edition, which, in fact, serves for "donation", that is, your gratitude to the developer :) By the way, for some reason, the 360 \u200b\u200bTotal Security antivirus "swore" for the portable version, although there is no installation for the installation ...

The interface is only partially Russified (especially in the menu there are many untranslated English words). But the integration with the system is maximum: the program by default replaces the standard copying function without any additional questions, as in TeraCopy.

Among the additional functions, it is worth noting the presence of the ability to pause copying, automatically skip copying errors, import and export a list of files to move, as well as manually adjust the buffer size for copying.

Regarding copying itself, the Germans, after all, let us down! Pictures were copied to the new folder almost instantly - in 0.9 seconds, but a 3 GB disk image - in 2 minutes. 6 sec. With a flash drive, however, it turned out better: 2.7 seconds. for images and 9 min. 20 sec. for a large file.

However, such results were obtained with standard settings. If, for example, we increase the block size from 256 KB to 1 MB, as well as the buffer sizes (sequential to 512 MB from 131 and parallel to 128 MB from 1), then the speed of copying large files will increase to 1 minute. 50 sec. on a local hard disk and up to 8 min. 40 sec. on removable. True, then copying of small data suffers: 1.6 seconds. and 3.1 sec. respectively...

Another contender for the title of the best replacement for the standard copy function is the ExtremeCopy program:

The most current version of the program is paid, however, the previous versions can be downloaded and used for free. True, they do not have the ability to manually adjust the set buffer limits and other parameters, but it works pretty well anyway. It is possible to download 64-bit and portable (though even earlier) versions.

ExtremeCopy integrates well into the system, however, it does not have the Russian language ... The program also does not shine with additional functionality: there is only the ability to pause copying and skip files.

As for the speed of copying, small pictures were copied to a new folder in exactly one second, and a large file in 1 minute. 48 sec. For a flash drive, the results are as follows: 3 seconds for "little things" and 9 minutes. 13 sec. for the image.

As you can see, the speed of copying files can be really increased even in modern operating systems. What can we say about the outdated Windows XP, Vista and 7. They did not yet have progressive data transfer systems, so the acceleration on them will be very significant.

In new operating systems, the gain is not particularly noticeable (maximum - 1 minute for large files and about a second for small files). However, here too, copying programs can come in handy, since many of them have in their arsenal such additional functions as pause copying, skipping files and even generating a list of files and delaying copying over them. Therefore, choose the program that you like the most and use it to your health!

This tool is only useful in situations where normal file copying, moving, or reading procedures do not work and the operating system reports an error. Unstoppable Copier is actually a tool for copying data that is visible but inaccessible in the system, for example, due to the appearance of bad sectors on the hard disk or scratches on the optical media.

The standard procedures for copying and moving files implemented in the operating system interrupt the operation on the file (reading, writing, etc.) when any error occurs. Total Commander is one of the most popular and powerful file managers that can perform those operations with files that Explorer cannot afford. The program features two work areas. Basically, it's like two Explorer windows, but they are paired. Thus, working on files is much more convenient. In the left pane, you open the directory that contains the files you need to copy, and on the right, the directory where you need to move them. After that, you select the ones you need and, using the appropriate tool, copy them where you want. Hot keys are especially pleasing, with the help of which work on files is accelerated many times.

Unstoppable copier

Unstoppable Copier, like Total Commander, is a multifunctional program that includes a huge number of tools for working on files. As you might already guess, it also has a copy function, and it is performed in a completely different way. The difference is that first you specify the directory or directory from which you want to move the files, then you specify the path to the directory where they need to be placed, and then just click on the "Copy" button. After that, the corresponding process is launched, the progress of which you can track in the lower part of the program window. It contains information about the number of bytes that were transferred, how many damaged files were transferred, the number of errors that occurred and the transfer rate are shown. They are also files, for it you only need to enable the corresponding parameter in the settings.

FastCopy

As they say, the name speaks for itself. FastCopy is a program for copying files from one directory to another. Unlike previous applications, it can't do anything else. But if your goal is to copy files, then nothing else is needed. This is the advantage of FastCopy - its interface is not loaded with unnecessary information, so it will be easier for the user to understand everything. Unfortunately, the program does not support the Russian language, but without it everything is pretty clear. First, you specify the directory where you want to copy the files, then where you need to copy them, and then click the appropriate button. There is also a set of additional parameters in this program for copying files, but it is quite possible to do without them.

TeraCopy

Finally, let's analyze an unconventional file copying program, namely TeraCopy. Its main difference is that it does not have a launcher as such. After you install TeraCopy, the copier will simply be replaced in the Explorer context menu. Now, when copying files in the file manager, not the usual file transfer interface will be displayed, but a special one, which is better because it is able to check the integrity of data arrays.
