Nokia Lumia 1020 | Packaging and equipment

The phone is sold in a typical Nokia blue box. The kit includes the phone itself, a USB cable for connecting a smartphone to a computer, a charger, earphones, a set of nozzles for them and a brief instruction.

Nokia Lumia 1020 | Appearance

The phone is available in three colors: black, white and yellow. A model in yellow came to our review. Due to the monolithic polycarbonate body, Nokia Lumia 1020 looks solid. The phone fits comfortably in the hand, you can easily reach any point of the screen without throwing the phone over in your hand. Due to the fact that the surface of the case is matte, fingerprints are not visible on it. The rounded corners help the body look a little thinner than it actually is.

On the front side there is a front-facing camera, a 4.5-inch display and three touch-sensitive control buttons: back, home and search. The phone vibrates when you touch the touch buttons.

At the back is a camera with a 41 MP matrix, 1 / 1.5 ”sensor size, Carl Zeiss lens (6 lenses), optical stabilization and two flashes: xenon and LED. The frame resolution is 7.712 x 5.360 pixels.

On the right side there is a volume rocker, a lock button and a camera button. The buttons are very well pressed, there is a physical recoil, thanks to which you can understand whether it was pressed or not.

On the top edge there is a SIM-card tray, which requires a special paper clip to open, and a 3.5-mm headphone jack.

Below is a hole for attaching a strap, a connector for a computer and a speaker.

Nokia Lumia 1020 | Screen

The phone has an AMOLED matrix with a resolution of 768 x 1.280 pixels. Thanks to ClearBlack technology, blacks look truly black from multiple viewing angles and bright sunlight. The screen itself is covered with a third generation Gorilla Glass. The sensor perceives clicks even with gloves, which is very good, especially considering our winter frosts. Unfortunately, the screen has one small drawback - the white color becomes bluish-green when the phone is tilted.

When locked, the current time is displayed on the screen. Since the AMOLED matrix is \u200b\u200bused, the voltage is applied only to the glowing pixels, and the charge is practically not wasted.

Nokia Lumia 1020 | Software

Thanks to the preinstalled office suite, there will no longer be a problem that an Excel spreadsheet has arrived in the mail, and there is nothing to open it with. Microsoft Office will not only allow you to view it, but also make changes.

Nokia has installed several of its applications:

1) Nokia Care - instructions and tips for using the phone.

2) Nokia Music - an application for free listening to ready-made mixes and composing your own.

3) Nokia Cinemagraph to create a photo with a variety of effects. Nokia Pro Cam for complete control over photo settings: ISO, shutter speed, white balance and more. Nokia Smart Cam - absolutely no settings, the application takes a few pictures and selects the best one.

4) Here Drive + and Here Maps... The first is a navigation app for car owners. A minimum of information and a simple interface that will be convenient to use while driving.

The second is a cartographic service. An interesting feature of this application is a large database of organizations with the ability to view them in the form of augmented reality. Unfortunately, the accuracy of the position of the shops is not at the highest level, and sometimes inaccuracies occur.

Each application has the ability to work offline.

Nokia Lumia 1020 | Camera

The phone has a rear camera with a resolution of 41 MP and a front one of 1.2 MP. Thanks to the high resolution of the rear camera, photos can be zoomed in without any loss of quality to a physical pixel mapping of 1: 1 (so-called lossless zoom). The downside of this is the large weight of images - about 11 MB. In the settings, you can select the photo resolution - 41 MP, compression up to 5 MP, 41 and 5 MP together. Why 5 MP? Nokia believes that this is the most optimal file size - the resolution is sufficient for printing, and the file takes up little space and is easily transferred over wireless networks.

The text in the photo with the rear camera is readable well. From the front, the text is also distinguishable.

The phone shoots video in 1080p resolution.

You can download the uncompressed version of the video at box.com (39.0 MB).

Nokia Lumia 1020 | Performance

JavaScript performance

SunSpider is a JavaScript benchmark that demonstrates both the performance of a tablet's JavaScript engine and the processing power of (to a lesser extent) hardware. Poor JavaScript implementation on a very fast tablet can blur the entire platform's performance. And at the same time, the great JavaScript implementation will make efficient use of even slow systems. However, today the main implementations of JavaScript engines are getting closer to each other, developers are borrowing all the best ideas. JavaScript tests are single threaded due to the nature of browsers. SunSpider correctly evaluates CPU-sensitive tasks found in real web applications.

The smaller the result, the better. The Nokia Lumia 1020 scored an excellent 910ms in this test, beating more than 50% of its Android competitors. This means that web surfing on the phone will be fast and convenient.

AnTuTu

The phone scored 11.136 points, which is a good result.

Relative Benchmark

This test was created "for growth", no available Android devices can show really high results. The graphics level is much higher than the gaming average, so even if the results here are not impressive, in real games the performance can be quite good. 60 fps in this test is already the Xbox 360.

The smartphone scored a very high score in this test, which far outstripped the compared phones and many tablets that were in our test lab.

Nokia Lumia 1020 | Battery life

We tested the smartphone for battery life in various scenarios. We measured at maximum brightness and maximum volume. Wi-Fi was turned on.

The battery life of the Nokia Lumia 1020 is good. You will get 9 hours of reading time, 6.5 hours of watching a movie. Under normal operating conditions, the smartphone will last a couple of days.

Nokia Lumia 1020 | Conclusion

Smartphone Nokia Lumia 1020 has a powerful filling and can easily cope with any task. But, unfortunately, there are very few games on Windows Phone that can use the full power of this device. Photos from the rear camera with a resolution of 41 MP are really very high quality. If you want to always have a good camera on hand, and a DSLR camera is hard and uncomfortable to carry, then you should take a closer look at the Nokia Lumia 1020.

Nokia Lumia 1020 advantages

  • Camera 41 MP
  • Modern design and high build quality
  • Pressing is perceived with gloves

Disadvantages of Nokia Lumia 1020

  • Slippery body and poor weight balance
  • Long autofocus time and photo saving
  • Few applications

Holding the Nokia Lumia 1020 in my hands, I wondered why it so happened that I didn't make friends with smartphones based on the Microsoft platform from the very beginning. And this dislike is very strange, since the design (of both the smartphones themselves and the OS), the speed and some features of the OS are quite to my liking.

But still, from time to time testing smartphones on WindowsPhone, I notice that the system is getting better, the devices themselves are better, and the process of interacting with them brings a relaxed pleasant feeling. Well, let's take a look at one of the company's latest creations, the Nokia Lumia 1020.

The manufacturer himself did not bother to position its devices as large or small, gaming or "long-playing", but the presence in the Nokia Lumia 1020 of a camera with a monstrous sensor resolution of 41 megapixels with optical stabilization and xenon flash makes the once popular word "camera phone" to be pronounced.

Exterior

I personally really like the design of the latest generation Nokia smartphones. He is really able to even visually convey the quality of the device, its status. Nokia Lumia 1020 traditionally continued the design line with only a few minor changes.

The Lumia 1020's casing reminded me of the Nokia N8, only in a more conservative style. The one-piece design is diluted with a round protrusion of the camera block on the back. On this extruded disc are located: a camera peephole, a xenon flash and an LED for backlighting when focusing or filming a video. The block protrudes quite strongly, but since it is located almost at the very top of the case, it does not interfere with holding the smartphone.

The location of physical and touch buttons, as well as connectors is practically standard and does not give rise to any complaints. On the top side there is a headphone jack and a tray for a microSIM card, the left side has lost any elements, but the right side is loaded with all physical buttons at once. Above is the volume rocker, a little lower - the power button, and almost at the bottom - the good old two-position camera key. All buttons are easily found with your finger and pressed as needed.

In the middle of the bottom end there is a micro USB port, on the right is a speaker grill, and on the left there is a hole for attaching a strap.

On the front, in addition to the display, there is an earpiece, a front camera and proximity and light sensors on top, and three touch-sensitive control buttons are located under the display.

The first impressions of the device are the most pleasant. The build quality does not allow doubting the device, all parts of the case are made and fit into place with maximum precision, while creating the feeling of almost complete solidity, inherent, for example, in Apple smartphones. The mass of the device is rather big, but I am more inclined to call it solidly weighty than heavy.

But the ergonomics of the body of the gadget are not very pleasing. Due to the fact that someone decided to make the distance from the bottom line of the screen to the bottom edge of the device large enough, the smartphone is not very convenient to use, holding it as usual for a smartphone, placing a little finger under the bottom edge. It is also not very convenient to reach the "back" button, which for some reason is located on the opposite side of the smartphone. At the same time Nokia Lumia 1020 is not big enough to wield it with both hands, and this uncertainty causes some discomfort. But these factors are purely personal, and if you are the owner of a large enough palm, then I am sure that using a smartphone will not bring any disappointment.

Screen

It should be said right away that I have always loved OLED screens in mobile devices. Naturally, I agree that manufacturers often twist the color gamut of such screens to obtain a richer and more colorful image, which people often complain about when they argue about "natural colors". But in fact, a colorful and contrasting screen brings more joy from using the gadget than a fading and faded screen, the colors of which, according to the vendor, are very close to natural.

* the photo does not show pixels, but the distortion that often occurs when shooting displays.

Nokia Lumia 1020 has a wonderful AMOLED screen, and in addition the company proudly dubbed it ClearBlack. This title has nothing to do with color display, as OLED displays blacks better than any other, just by definition. But it is ClearBlack that creates the effect of fusion between the screen and the body, and as a result, the Nokia Lumia 1020 screen practically does not give out its boundaries and does not begin to sparkle with all the colors of the rainbow when the light source is reflected in it.

I would also like to say a few words about the protective glass covering the screen. In the specifications for the device, I did not find any mention of the oleophobic coating or its other special properties, except that the screen is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. In fact, with very careful use for a week, I was surprised to find several scratches. Also, when using it, it is very noticeable that the glass still has some kind of coating, since it practically does not collect fingerprints, and in addition it is frantically slippery, so be careful when placing your smartphone on any inclined plane - it slips even while lying on a rubberized surface.

Specifications and performance

Before moving on to talking about the performance of a smartphone in different tasks, I suggest that you familiarize yourself with the technical characteristics of the device:

Evaluating the characteristics of the hardware of this smartphone offhand, we can say that it is equipped at the level of the flagship smartphones of the previous generation. But this is absolutely not how it feels when using WP8, unlike the Android system. I did not run synthetic performance tests for several reasons. This is optimization by smartphone manufacturers for passing tests, and errors as a result of comparing performance on different platforms, and many other reasons. Anyway, the era of benchmarks, as criteria for evaluating a smartphone, has passed, and personally I do not really trust them.

Instead, it should be said that the smartphone works great in all tasks - it does not glitch, does not twitch and does not cause even the slightest complaints about the lack of iron power.

High-quality 3D games, which are still not so many in the Marketplace, run without problems, so you can kill time in any way you like.

Probably the only oddity that indirectly relates to this section was the constant crashes of Google services. The smartphone constantly gave messages like the one in the screenshot when trying to sync mail. So the transition from the Android ecosystem to the Microsoft galaxy was painful enough for me.

Sound

In the course of using the smartphone, I evaluated the sound not only during a call, but also in headphones and through the speaker. For each of these points, I can say the following. The sound from the earpiece is not excellent, but good. You can hear the interlocutor well, but in noisy places you had to listen, either because of a lack of volume reserve, or because of an incorrectly designed sound delivery. If we evaluate the sound quality on a ten-point scale, then I would rate the Nokia Lumia 1020 at a solid 8.

As for the sound through the built-in speaker, everything is not very good here. The traditionally good Nokia speakers, apparently, ran out right at the time of the development of this cameraphone, so it will work out to listen to music with friends, but there will be little pleasant in this action. The sound clearly lacks low frequencies and at least some kind of spaciousness.

But luckily, I cannot say the same about the sound in the headphones. In my daily life, I use closed-back headphones for richer bass. In all smartphones that I have used before, I had to manually adjust the equalizer to the characteristics of the frequency response of my headphones, but in the case of the Lumia 1020, I did not think about it at all. Somehow magically the sound was so balanced that I even forgot to check for an equalizer in a standard player.

I also liked the WP8 player control implementation. It is convenient and always available from any application, no matter if you need to add volume or switch the track.

Camera

The characteristics of the camera of this smartphone can be summarized as follows:

Camera

Resolution 41 megapixels
Flash LED, Xenon
Aperture size F2.2
Focal length (35mm equivalent) 26mm
Sensor size 1/1.5"
Additionally Backlit Sensor (BSI), Auto focus, AF Assist Beam, Touch to focus, Manual focus, Optical image stabilization, Face detection, Exposure compensation, ISO control, White balance presets, Digital zoom, Geo tagging, Panorama, Night mode, Scenes, Effects, Self-timer
Video 1920x1080 (1080p HD) (30 fps)
Additionally Optical stabilization, tracking autofocus, backlight
Front-camera 1.2 megapixels

Based on them, one might even make a premature conclusion that this is the pinnacle of mobile photography technology, but let's take a closer look. Taking the Nokia Lumia 1020 in hand, the first thing I wanted to do was fire up the camera. And in fact, the camera turned out to be not as good as the average user might expect from it. In auto mode, both in the Camera application and in Nokia Pro Cam, the smartphone took unremarkable photos that could only boast of digital zoom without loss of quality. At the same time, in my personal opinion, the pictures turn out to be too grainy, but we are not talking about the graininess inherent in film photography, but rather about a certain "pinching" and excessive sharpness of the picture. This behavior of the camera in automatic mode immediately breaks off the entire wow effect.

The second drawback is poor camera performance in low light conditions. As soon as daylight fades and Lumia 1020 starts to "blur" photos due to long exposure, while the night shooting mode does not always save.

But when it comes to shooting with manual settings, then the Lumia 1020 allows you to be creative and show all your talents. First, settings are intuitive to access and change is quick and easy. Secondly, the camera provides a really large range of adjustment for exposure values, shutter speed and other delights. And that's why you can easily achieve the desired result, if, of course, you know what and how you want to get it. Therefore, I am more than sure that the capabilities of the camera in Nokia Lumia 1020 will appeal to those who are familiar with at least the theory of photography, and better, if with practice.

Thus, the Lumia 1020 is a double-digit camera phone. It is also a professional tool that, in the hands of a skilled photographer, can help you convey your creative vision in the form of a masterpiece. On the other hand, it is still a smartphone, the owner of which wants to act according to the principle of "one click - one shot", i.e. get the perfect picture automatically, without unnecessary actions and operations.

As an example, it is worth looking at the following images, which were taken with a Nokia Lumia 1020 camera and are 5-megapixel automatically created crops of the original photo. The first two were made in a fully automatic mode, while the second pair of images was shot using manual settings.

Sample video (shot handheld on the go to evaluate the stabilization, which worked perfectly!):

Autonomy

As in the case with the performance assessment, it is worth noting that the fundamental difference in the algorithms for the behavior of systems, which is deeply embedded in their cores, greatly affects the indicators of the device's autonomy. Thus, an Android smartphone can more actively consume the battery, but at the same time it will more thoroughly check all push messages, synchronize with servers more often and deliver information to you without unnecessary delays. Although, if your accounts in social. networks are not susceptible to attacks from thousands of messages from loyal subscribers every minute, then you, most likely, will not notice the difference.

* you shouldn't judge autonomy by this screenshot. The displayed operating time does not correspond to reality.

What is worth taking away from this is that with moderate use, the autonomy of the Nokia Lumia 1020 is slightly better than the average Android smartphone. But the peculiarities of the system operation after using gadgets on other OS may seem rather unusual.

Battery

Talk time 19 hours
on average 12 hours
Standby mode 16 days
Talk time (3G) 13 hours
on average 12 hours
Capacity 2000 mAh
Wireless charger Option

In my case, when using a smartphone in 3G networks with active listening to music and viewing various social media. services, the Lumia 1020 lived a very calm working day, asking to charge late at night, and if I were more conservative in using the resources of a smartphone, then perhaps two days would be quite within its power.

Platform

Several months have passed since my last interaction with the Windows Phone platform, and I want to say that WP has matured and strengthened noticeably. There are already noticeably more decent apps in the Marketplace, but still not enough to compete directly with Android or iOS. The system itself works more stably, the annoying "resume" notations appear nowadays not so often, and more and more smartphones get their own chips in the face of increased sensor sensitivity for the ability to work with gloves or turn on the display by double-clicking directly into the off screen.

When the Nokia Lumia 1020 was launched for the first time, the smartphone suggested that I update to the latest firmware version for it, which means that some work is underway and the platform does not stand still. In terms of design and principles of interaction with the system, Windows Phone differs from other operating systems and may seem inconvenient or ill-considered to many, although, in fact, it is simply different.

But, as for me personally, I am perhaps not yet ready to experiment with this platform in everyday life for many subjective reasons. But I am very interested in watching the development of WP and it is pleasant to note that progress is noticeable. I did not give a more detailed overview of the system itself in the review, since it is WP8 in Africa WP8 (that is, it does not differ on different devices), and a complete overview of the system deserves a separate material.

conclusions

To summarize, I will say that Nokia Lumia 1020 will definitely please those people who can afford it, without scraping the last trifle out of the piggy bank. Only in this case, when you are not burdened with the cost of this smartphone, it will bring you joy and its use will be really pleasant. If the purchase of this device leads you to malnutrition and lack of sleep for several months, it will disappoint you, and you will find in it an awful number of shortcomings that will make you regret making a purchase more than once.

In general - Nokia Lumia 1020 turned out great, with its own character and quirks, but the target audience of this smartphone, unfortunately, is limited by many factors.

Case design and materials

While other manufacturers tried to make smartphones rounded and streamlined, Nokia added austerity and angularity to their designs. The Lumia 1020 is no exception. Like the 2012 flagship, the Lumia 920, the Finnish camera phone has a flat top and bottom, sharp corners and rounded sides.

The front side of the device is almost entirely occupied by a display module with a diagonal of 4.5 inches. On its upper part there are light and proximity sensors, an earpiece, a manufacturer's logo and a front camera peephole.

At the bottom there are touch-sensitive navigation keys - "Back", "Windows" and "Search". The engineers provided them with lights so that they could be seen in total darkness. However, this is not only their plus, but also a minus, since the emitted light creates discomfort when watching videos and reading books at night.

The back side is almost half made up of a projection made of magnesium alloy. It reliably accommodates: the main camera peephole, xenon and LED flash. In addition, connectors were attached to the back of the phone for connecting a panel with an induction coil for wireless charging.

Traditionally for Lumia-smartphones, the left side of the camera phone cannot boast of the presence of any elements, but the right side has such an opportunity. It houses ceramic buttons for volume control, power and camera control. Curiously, this arrangement is suitable for both right-handed and left-handed people.

The underside contains a hole for inserting a lanyard, a microUSB port with a ceramic rim, a multimedia speaker and a microphone.

The upper one has sheltered a MicroSIM tray, which can be removed with a complete ejector, a headphone jack and a second microphone.

Compared to modern phones, the Lumia 1020 is a relatively compact mobile device (130.4 x 71.4 x 10.4 mm). Thanks to its modest size, it fits securely in the hand. This is also due to the material of the case. The panel covering the sides and back of the smartphone is made of matte polycarbonate, which collects much less stains than glossy plastic. As for the colors, the user is offered a choice of black, white and yellow colors.

Display

Since the display is the face of the Lumia 1020, let's start with it. By modern standards, the screen of this model has a modest performance. Its diagonal is only 4.5 inches, and the resolution is 768 x 1280 pixels. The matrix is \u200b\u200bmade using Super AMOLED technology. Like other Samsung's creations, the display installed in the cameraphone in question can boast of low power consumption due to the fact that the matrix does not need to highlight dark areas, which are abundant in the Windows Phone interface. Also from the list of its positive qualities, it is worth noting a high margin of brightness. This feature allows the screen to ensure readability even on a bright sunny day. In addition, this is facilitated by the ClearBlack filter from Nokia itself. The disadvantage of this type of matrix is \u200b\u200bthe incorrect color rendering in comparison with IPS-displays and the appearance of a greenish tint when changing the viewing angle. But you can try to fix all this by adjusting the display color profile in the system parameters. So that the owner of the Lumia 1020 does not grab his heart every time he accidentally places the phone in his pocket with keys, change, hooks the display with some sharp object or accidentally hits it on a hard surface, the engineers protected the screen with a rounded Gorilla Glass 3. For pleasant tactile sensations and quick removal of fingerprints, it has an oleophobic coating.

Of the pleasant features of the camera phone display, I would like to highlight a few more features:
  • Sensor sensitivity adjustment. Allows you to control the screen of a mobile device with gloves or any conductive object.
  • Double tap to wake up. Provides the ability to wake up the device by double-tapping the screen.
  • Screensaver option. In standby mode, it displays the current time, date, and application icons with notification counters on the phone screen.

    Hardware platform

Like other "snow" brothers (fin. Lumia - snow) from the twentieth line of the family, the Lumia 1020 smartphone is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus dual-core processor with a frequency of 1.5 GHz, an Adreno 225 video accelerator and 2 GB of "RAM". For Microsoft's mobile OS and games from its app store, that's more than enough. Since the system is tailored for this kind of hardware, it works smoothly and quickly responds to user commands. There are no problems with the products of the gaming industry. On this model, almost all toys from the Windows Store come without friezes and crashes. Only GTA: San Andreas manages to load the phone to such an extent that it starts to warm up and no longer cope with the processing of the game world of action adventure.

The storage capacity of the device is 32 or 64 GB at the user's choice. It is impossible to expand it with a memory card, since the slot for it is not provided by the device's design. There is no OTG support either on the side of the internal component of the device or in its software. Such a decision does not seem entirely clear, given that the device is positioned as a smartphone with an advanced camera, and provides for the storage of obscenely large photo and video files with a high level of detail and image quality.

    Camera

The device contains a 1 / 1.5 "CMOS matrix with a resolution of 41 MP, Carl Zeiss optics, a set of 6 lenses (glass was used as a material for one, and high-quality plastic for all the others), a focal length of 26 mm, a minimum focusing distance of 15 cm and aperture f / 2.2. A xenon flash with a range of 4 meters is designed to help the camera when shooting in low light conditions. A modest LED flash dwells next to it on the phone body. As a result, this gives a kind of universal solution. Also, the camera of the device has optical stabilization (a lens system located on ball bearings, which is powered by electric motors), the task of which is to ensure that pictures in motion or with strong shaking hands are clear, and the video is smooth, without strong jolts, jumps and twitching. Thanks to this technology, it is possible to take excellent handheld pictures at shutter speeds up to 1/3 of a second.

The Lumia Camera app preinstalled in the system is responsible for controlling the camera. It hides up its sleeve a good list of settings (illumination, focusing, white balance, ISO, exposure), the challenge of which is not entirely obvious. To access them, the user needs to touch the camera shutter button in the application viewfinder and, without lifting his finger, move it to the left. The end result should be a list of manual parameters. All of them are adjusted by moving the corresponding sliders. What is nice - the effect of the manipulations done can be immediately appreciated on the application screen.

In addition to the mentioned settings, in Lumia Camera you can find a section with options that offers to choose the aspect ratio and the mode of taking pictures. If nothing is touched and left as is, the camera will save the processed 5MP photo. If you delve into the settings, then you can ensure that the application creates photos in three sizes - 5 MP, 34 MP (16: 9) and 38 MP (4: 3). For the second and third options, several formats are provided - JPG and DNG. The first is processed by the phone's automatics, while the second remains in its original form so that the owner of the device can manually edit the photo.

There are far fewer settings available for recording videos on the Lumia Camera. The application provides the ability to activate the backlight, adjust the white balance and set focus. In the video recording mode parameters, you can select the resolution and frame rate (720p at 24 fps and 1080p at 30 fps), display the grid and activate the low-pass filter. All videos are recorded in MP4 format with a bitrate of about 20 Mbps (in the case of 1080p) and about 10.5 Mbps (in 720p mode). Thanks to the two microphones built into the Lumia 1020, audio is recorded in stereo at 256Kbps.

Fans of taking selfies will definitely not like the front camera of the Lumia 1020, since its module is more sharpened for video conferencing than for creating selfies. This is even hinted at by the modest resolution of the matrix - 1.2 MP.

    Sound

The Lumia 1020 has a multimedia speaker on the bottom. This solution ensures good audibility of the sound it makes, even when the smartphone is placed on the table with the display up. However, this also has a small drawback. During the passage of any toy, you can easily cover the speaker with your hand and thereby muffle the sound. Its volume margin is above average. Distortion in the sound can only appear when listening to sufficiently rich tracks, so you can use it without hesitation for listening to musical compositions.

The earpiece speaker, like the multimedia speaker, has good sound. It is capable of transmitting the speech of the interlocutor who is calling over the cellular network or via Skype without distortion.

A microphone for communication on a mobile network is located near the multimedia speaker. During a telephone conversation, he is able to cut off extraneous noise and clearly distinguish the sound emitted by a nearby source. After activating the speakerphone, the main microphone independently increases its sensitivity, but at the same time it picks up other sounds. The sound quality is excellent. With a good signal of the cellular network, the interlocutor can easily make out all the words.

The second microphone is located at the top of the mobile device. It is included in the work when recording video to create a stereo track or during video conferences in Skype.

The vibration motor is not very useful for signaling an incoming call, received message or notification if the device is in your pocket or bag. The maximum where he is able to somehow prove himself is in the office at a collective meeting, when it is not possible to use a multimedia speaker.

    Communications

The Finnish camera phone supports 2G, 3G and 4G / LTE networks. In addition, it can work with Wi-Fi in the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands and is compatible with 802.11 a / b / g / n. This feature of the wireless module allows you to use less loaded channels for quick access to the Internet and unimpeded downloading of the necessary information from its vastness. The list of communications Lumia 1020 also includes Bluetooth 4.0, which has the ability to transmit sound, control the player and transfer files. The maximum speed of data reception via the "blue tooth" is up to 120 KB / s, but the transfer rate is slightly higher - up to 170 KB / s.

So that the user does not get lost in an unknown area, the engineers equipped the phone with GPS, Glonass and a compass. In addition, they made sure that the device contains an atmospheric pressure sensor. The speed and sensitivity of the receivers cause only positive emotions, since the device manages to find the location in just a few seconds.

    Autonomous work

The smartphone is powered by a 2000 mAh battery. In a typical usage scenario, involving the use of the basic capabilities of the device, the battery can keep the device in working order for a little more than a day. For modern devices that do not have a power supply with increased capacity, or special means that control the processor frequency, this is quite a characteristic indicator. With continued use of the device as a camera for taking pictures, the battery quickly loses its charge. It can last for a maximum of 4 hours of active work, so it is recommended to buy a cover plate with a built-in 1020 mAh battery for your smartphone. Moreover, this accessory also has a thread for mounting on a tripod, a gripping handle, a shutter release button, and a MicroUSB connector.

The supplied charger has a voltage of 5 V and a current of 1.5 A. It can fully replenish the battery of a smartphone in 2 hours. In addition, the Lumia 1020 has an overlay with an induction coil inside. It allows you to charge the device without connecting any wires. It is enough to put it on your smartphone and put it on a special "pillow". True, this charging process is quite long (about 3 hours), since the device manages to get only 750 mA per hour.

    Software

The smartphone is powered by the Windows Phone 8.1 operating system with an additional add-on called Lumia Denim. The OS may be of interest to people who are concerned about the safety of their data, since the system is reliably protected from hacking. She is also able to attract the attention of enthusiasts who want to try something new. After all, it is very different from competitors in the face of iOS and Android. Microsoft's mobile OS workspace is divided into three parts: the start screen, the app list, and the action center. On the first, instead of the icons familiar to many, there are so-called tiles. With their help, you can not only launch applications, but also get important information, since tiles are "live" elements of the start screen. For example, they can inform the user about the number of new notifications or remind about an important event. Like competing desktops, tiles on this operating system can be moved and deleted. Moreover, each of them has a resizing function (small, medium, wide).

The second part of the desktop (the list of applications), oddly enough, consists of a list of installed applications. All of them are sorted into groups, each of which is assigned a specific letter of the alphabet. In the opinion of engineers, such a solution allows you to quickly navigate the list and find the desired product. Additionally, there is a search for applications.

The third part contains switches for different events (turn on / off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile internet, VPN, change the brightness level, and others) and a notification panel.

As for the pre-installed software, the Lumia 1020 firmware offers the following applications:
  • Lumia Photo Studio is a photo editor, inside which, in addition to standard functions (brightness, contrast, saturation), there are tools for blurring the background, for emphasizing color on some elements of the picture and for creating a collage.

  • Here Maps, Here Drive are free navigation apps. Provide the opportunity to plot the most optimal route for moving from point A to point B on foot or by car, save preferred places and download maps for offline navigation.
  • Office is a kind of hub for Word, Excel, PowerPoint documents. Knows how to open them for viewing and editing, and upload them to OneDrive storage. It uses phone memory, mail, Office 365 account and "cloud" as sources for searching documents.

    Test results

For those who are accustomed to seeing "live" examples of the operation of various components of smartphones, real results of performance tests, battery life and camera under different scenarios of use are presented.

    Performance

Despite the fact that the smartphone is not equipped with the most top-end iron components, even by the standards of its time, it quite confidently fulfills all user commands. During interaction with the system and launching applications, there are no hiccups or brakes. No problem with games from the Windows Store. Asphalt 8, Xtreme, Modern Combat 5, Halo: Spartan Strike and other massive toys go to the Lumia 1020 without any problems. But what makes the device sweat is the mode for creating DNG images of 34 and 38 megapixels. It takes him 4 seconds to save one picture. He also noticeably strains while recording FullHD video. After 7 minutes of shooting the video, the device begins to warm up in the area of \u200b\u200bthe camera and slow down.

Below are the results from AnTuTu Benchmark and GFXbench. As you can see, the Lumia 1020 is inferior in performance to many Android-based devices of the same year of release, but it can still easily cope with everyday tasks and "pull" all the games available for Windows Phone.

    Autonomy

To test the operating time of the device, the following scenarios were used: passing the game Asphalt 8, streaming video with a resolution of 720p, navigating, shooting a video and reading a book. The brightness for all three tests was lowered to the minimum acceptable value.

    The results are as follows:

    Camera

With excellent or just good lighting, the quality of photographs of various genres (general plan, landscape and macro photography) pleases the eye. The resulting pictures can be safely printed in A4 format. When the camera lacks light, the sharpness of the image drops. However, even despite this, it is higher than in the pictures taken with the cameras of devices of the same year of release as the Lumia 1020, but with a lower matrix resolution.

The flash greatly improves the result of night photography

The detail of the pictures is beyond praise. So you can't tell right away that they were taken with a mobile phone camera. Here Finnish engineers must be given their due. Even the letters on buildings at a decent distance from the camera are clearly visible when zooming in on individual areas of a high-resolution RAW photo.

The detail in the shots is really impressive

I was very pleased with the opportunity to make a resize of an already taken picture. Thanks to it, you can refuse to fram the scene during shooting. It is enough just to capture it in its entirety without changing the focal length, then open it as a ready-made photo, carefully study and crop the desired area.

Auto tuning. The grass is acidic

Movies recorded under normal shooting conditions are fun, but not always. It happens that auto adjustment incorrectly sets the white balance and exposure, and this spoils the overall picture of the video.

Video: example of recording a cityscape

As for a smartphone released in 2013, the Lumia 1020 does a good job of recording video and sound at concerts. Minus - when the maximum zoom value is set, grains appear in the image.

  • For the year that has passed since the announcement of the Lumia 920, the Finns managed to present a lot of flagship smartphones - Lumia 925, Lumia 1020, Lumia 1520. We published a review of the latter not so long ago, but we have not yet had time to get acquainted with the first two. We are correcting this flaw. And although the title mentions only the 1020th, in fact this review is devoted to both devices. They have a lot in common, but there are also many differences. However, first things first.

    Nokia Lumia 1020

    ⇡ Design

The Lumia 925 and Lumia 1020 do not differ much in width and height - which is not surprising, because their displays are exactly the same, with a diagonal of 4.5 inches. The bezels on the sides of the screens in both cases are obscenely wide at present - in the case of the Lumia 1020, they are slightly wider, but not so much that it is striking.

Case thickness is a different matter. As far as we understand, the Finns did not really try to make the 1020's body thin: all the same, these efforts would have been futile because of the large camera module, which inevitably increases the thickness to almost one and a half centimeters. So in the rest of the parts the case turned out to be well-nourished - more than 10 mm. Lumia 925 is also far from the records, but compared to its older sister it looks very slim.

Left Nokia Lumia 925, right - Lumia 1020

The designers have saved both devices from the built-in wireless charging, so they managed to achieve an acceptable weight: 139 grams for the Lumia 925 and 159 for the Lumia 1020. Compared to the frightening weight of the previous Nokia flagship - recall, the Lumia 920 weighed as much as 185 grams with the same display diagonal - these are quite acceptable numbers.

The 1020 case is completely made of plastic. Lumia 925 is more interesting: the plastic is only on the "back", and the structure is based on a powerful aluminum frame. True, it looks a little less harmonious - the multi-colored fragments of the case are too full of and stubbornly do not want to form a single image.

    ⇡ Iron and communication

The platform has not changed in Nokia's flagship smartphones since the release of the Lumia 820 and 920. And the Finns, as far as we understand, have nothing to do with it: it's just that the best thing that Microsoft provided for devices on Windows Phone 8 before the Lumia 1520 was the dual-core processors of the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 family.

So the Lumia 1020 and Lumia 925 have exactly the same chip as the 920, the Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960. The two cores of the original Krait architecture run at 1.5GHz. In today's quad-core times - not God knows what phenomenal reserves of power. However, for an operating system completely optimized for such hardware, this is more or less enough.

The MSM8960's built-in graphics are also a hi from the past - it's the Adreno 225, pretty decent graphics for the 2012 it came in. But for the end of 2013 it is already rather weak, of course. On the other hand, for a platform in the app store of which something called "Stroke Find a Cat" is leading by a huge margin in the top of free games, and the display resolution (so far) does not exceed 1280x768, the capabilities of Adreno 225 are more or less enough.

The only any serious change concerning the "computer" part of the new Lumia smartphone is an increase in the amount of memory: 2 GB of RAM is installed, and not 1, as in the Lumia 920/925/928 - LPDDR2 is still used, since this is the best. what the processor can work with. The built-in flash memory in the Lumia 1020 is 32 GB, while the owners of the Lumia 925 have to be content with 16 GB of storage. In reality, the user has access to 12 GB in the Lumia 925 and for some reason only 24 GB in the 1020th - in the case of the new flagship, the firmware takes up twice as much space.

There is no MicroSD slot in either model - you can expand the volume only through network storage systems. By default, the buyer is invited to use Microsoft SkyDrive - 7 GB of cloud storage space is given free of charge.

To all appearances, there are no fundamental changes in the radio part either. The processor is the same, therefore, the Qualcomm MDM9x15 modem built into it remains the same. We don't know what transceiver and signal amplifiers were used, but something tells us that the whole kit migrated from the Lumia 920 to the 925 and 1020 without any changes.

In any case, range support has not been expanded. You can still count on a full GSM / GPRS / EDGE "quartet". However, 3G still does not support UMTS 1700 MHz, also known as AWS. So if you go with any of the Lumia smartphones to the USA - do not buy a local T-Mobile SIM card, the device will not be able to connect to this network everywhere. 4G supports all the same bands: 1, 3, 7 (our native 2600 MHz), 8 and 20. For Europe and Asia in general, and Russia in particular, this set will be enough for your head, but in the same States with "Lumiya" there is nothing to catch at all - for LTE you will have to run to the Canadian border.

Nokia Lumia 925: micro SIM slot

As for the speeds, the "maximum speed" is 42 Mbit / s in 3G and 100 Mbit / s in 4G. In theory, there are already faster network options (and they are supported in newer modems and systems-on-a-chip of the same Qualcomm). In practice, you will hardly notice a cardinal difference with a real connection - in any case, the speed is more likely to rest not on technological limitations, but on the network capacity and signal quality.

The Wi-Fi adapter is also built into the processor, so there are no surprises here either - 802.11a / b / g / n is supported, both in the 2.4 GHz band and in the less loaded 5 GHz. The Bluetooth module is also integrated into the central chip, theoretically it can work with BT 4.0, but in the official specifications of Nokia smartphones, the old-fashioned way indicates 3.0. Why is that? It's simple: Bluetooth 4.0 is not supported by the Windows Phone 8 operating system (if we understand correctly, GDR3 does not change anything in this sense either).

Oddly enough, the micro-SIM tray in the Lumia 1020 is significantly different from the one installed in the 925th

Another module built directly into the processor is a combined GPS / GLONASS adapter. In this case, the rather smart chip comes with a bonus from Nokia: a set of navigation applications HERE Maps, the main pleasant feature of which is the ability to conveniently download offline maps.

Completing the description of the communication capabilities of the Lumia 925 and 1020, the presence of NFC should be mentioned. Unlike Yabloko, the guys from Espoo and Seattle did not ignore this standard, for which we are very grateful to them - not that it is an important thing, but it can come in handy from time to time.

    18.11.2013 01:07

Recently, manufacturers of modern smartphones are haunted by the topic of introducing a full-fledged camera into this uncomplicated device. This statement especially concerns the Finnish (or already actually American) company Nokia, which year after year produces a photo revolution, shocking the public with the unthinkable for a mobile phone megapixels... But as every more or less serious amateur photographer knows, the camera's strength is far from being in the matrix resolution. But the average user doesn't want to hear about it. The principle works here - the more the better.

In everyday life, such devices are usually called “ shovel"frankly speaking, taking Nokia Lumia 1020 in hand, just such a comparison comes to mind.

So, before us is another camera phone under the name Nokia Lumia 1020. Since this device belongs to the Lumia line, it is logical to assume that it works under the Windows operating system, so it is, the version number is the eighth. Diagonal touch WXGA display with resolution 1280x768 pixels - whole 4.5 inch... Apparently Nokia really cares about the size, it is no coincidence that the first tablet of the Finnish company was announced last week ().

In everyday life, such devices are usually called shovelfrankly speaking, taking Nokia Lumia 1020 in hand, just such a comparison comes to mind. Let's say right away: using and managing the phone is not very convenient, it is really quite large and cumbersome. It will hardly be possible to cope with navigation and control of the device with one hand and one thumb, especially if your hand is not very large. In addition, Nokia Lumia 1020 is also quite a weighty device 158 g... As you probably guessed, a considerable part of this parameter falls on 41 megapixels camera.

The device is quite smart, for the entire time of communication with such one did not have to wait for a response in any application.

Nokia Lumia 1020 is equipped with a dual-core processor Qualcomm Snapdragon S4, the frequency of which is 1500 MHz... The amount of RAM is 2 GB, and for user needs whole 32 GB solid state space. By the way, Nokia provides all buyers of this smartphone with 7 GB of cloud space, which can be a pleasant surprise (although the same Google will give 15 GB without any problems). The device is quite smart, for the entire time of communication with such one did not have to wait for a response in any application. Note that the Nokia Lumia 1020 sensor is very sensitive (despite the fact that you can adjust the degree of pressing and touching in the settings), which is rather inconvenient both when typing a message (sometimes letters are pressed even before your finger touches the display), and when shooting on camera.

Once again, let's allow ourselves gag touch keyboard on all modern smartphones, it is terribly inconvenient and cannot be compared with the classic mechanical QWERTY layout on good old mobile phones.

The type of SIM used in Nokia Lumia 1020 is Micro-SIM... The body of the device is completely monolithic, like most modern smartphones. There are only a few buttons and interfaces on the sides. The device supports virtually all existing standards of wireless communication and communication: Wi-Fi, 3G, LTE, NFC, Bluetooth 3.0, etc.

In this review, let me dwell on only two fundamental features of the Nokia Lumia 1020, which by and large are key in this smartphone: the camera and the Windows 8 operating system.

The software from Microsoft that Nokia has chosen for its devices has long been covered a large layer of criticism and discontent from users, and not only domestic ones. The main reason is the too limited number of applications in the market, especially free ones that can be installed on Windows Phone. We will not once again enter into an endless dispute, but note that recently there are more useful programs for this platform. In the end, does the average user need so much when using a smartphone. It is necessary to understand that the mobile platform does not claim to fully replace the functionality of the desktop, and therefore require all at once just pointless.

It is necessary to understand that the mobile platform does not claim to completely replace the functionality of the desktop.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 has a ton of useful pre-installed programs. For example, a set of applications from HERE (HERE Maps, HERE Transit, HERE Drive +). The proposed maps and navigator work quite quickly, there is an opportunity to display a picture from a satellite, but it should be admitted that on the Android platform and, for example, in maps, the picture looks more detailed and cute. But this does not affect the functionality of the HERE service, believe me, using these maps is very simple and convenient, at least not worse than the application from Yandex or Google Maps.

Browser for web browsing - Internet Explorer is also quite suitable for work and is practically on par with its competitors in the mobile market. All pages are displayed as on a desktop, albeit in a slightly reduced format.

The Windows Phone operating system has several distinct advantages over iOS and Android.

Finally, Nokia Lumia 1020 already has a full Microsoft Office 365, which will allow you to view and edit documents from Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. But it is rather difficult to call it a pleasure, given the screen size and type of control.

The Windows Phone operating system has several distinct advantages over iOS and Android. First, convenient synchronization of a mobile device with a full-fledged PC. To do this, Windows located on your car, will automatically offer to download and install the only application for Windows Phone (in the process you only have to press the "Next" button a few times), after which you will be able to transfer any files and content from your smartphone to your computer and vice versa. At least the process is a million times easier than manipulating the same, and this, you see, is expensive, and here the programmers from Microsoft have never been equal. Secondly, Windows Phone has a lot of settings that can be adjusted, many of which relate to numerous themes of the working interface. By the way, the latter has only two active windows: the desktop, which is so similar to Windows 8 or, and the second is a list of all service and installed applications, including settings. Getting lost and confused is completely impossible. Thirdly, the Windows Phone operating system is a product from Microsoft, which means that all users who are familiar with Windows will find many functions and phenomena of the mobile OS intuitively clear and understandable.

In the process of using a smartphone on the Windows Phone platform, we did not leave a peculiar feeling of emptiness and some abstraction.

The only thing that I would like to note in particular (in relation to the OS) is that during the operation of a smartphone on the Windows Phone platform, we did not leave a peculiar feeling of emptiness and some abstraction. One gets the feeling that this is just a sketch, a trial version of the operating system. Every time something is missing. There is no definite completeness, such last stroke... Perhaps you just need to get used to this phenomenon.

It is possible that some users will not immediately understand how to activate the multitasking function in Windows Phone. To do this, hold down the "Back" button for a few seconds. By the way, all active applications are closed after repeated touching of the same touch key. Adjusting the sound, just like changing the active mode, is done using the side keys on the Nokia Lumia 1020 (the functional window of the audio player also appears here), you also need to get used to this.

It's time to talk about the camera, for which "we are all here and gathered." So, we have a portable camera with six lenses from Zeiss, the minimum aperture value is f / 2.2, actually like u. Focal length of the device - 26 mm, and the sensor size is 1 / 1.5 inches... Just think about it - the maximum image resolution on the Nokia Lumia 1020 mobile camera is 7712 × 5360 pixels... Not without a built-in flash. In the arsenal of a PureView camera, there are quite a few different filters and types of shooting: single-frame, burst, panoramic shots are also possible. The latter are implemented using the so-called automatic gluing each frame with interruptions, the accuracy of the resulting photos is very high.

Just think - the maximum image resolution on the Nokia Lumia 1020 mobile camera is 7712 × 5360 pixels.

The Nokia Lumia 1020's approach to users with varying degrees of knowledge and ability to shoot is very well implemented. This refers to professionalism and experience. In the arsenal of a smartphone, there are two cameras, of course, we are talking about an interface, because there is only one physical device. Nokia Pro Cam is designed for experienced users who are able to change shutter speed, sensitivity, white balance, etc. The Nokia Lumia 1020 really does. A fully automatic mode is also available, which, however, is not devoid of some settings and homemade preparations in the style of night portrait, landscape, panorama, etc. Navigation through all menu options is quite simple and straightforward.

Nokia Pro Cam is designed for experienced users who are able to change shutter speed, sensitivity, white balance, etc.

Shooting is carried out by means of a physical button from the end of the Nokia Lumia 1020 body (in fact, as on a regular camera), and with the help of an on-screen sensor, which serves both to select the focus point and to zoom the necessary objects.

Taking pictures with Nokia Lumia 1020 is rather unusual. The fact is that the built-in image stabilizer is not always able to work wonders in low light conditions. In bright daylight sunlight, the photos are simply gorgeous (the colors on the screen are even brighter than in real life). However, we will not tire of repeating that any modern camera, even with 5 megapixels, is capable of creating good shots when there is enough ambient light. But even in the dark, Nokia Lumia 1020 is able to surprise its user.
Again, the whole thing is in the weight of the device, on the one hand it is quite large for a phone, but not sufficient for a camera, because even the slightest shaking of the hand can ruin the frame and completely blur the picture. Apparently, Nokia engineers could not find a balance in this regard.

There is no doubt that this mobile camera built into a smartphone is the best today.

One way or another, and there is no doubt that this mobile camera built into a smartphone is the best today. This is an absolutely indisputable fact. However, whether there is such a great need to purchase this device solely because of the camera, when there are so many inexpensive devices around (I mean exclusively photographic equipment) that can produce photos of even better quality, is a completely reasonable and fair question.

Even after long deliberations, we did not manage to fully form in our minds the image of a potential buyer of Nokia Lumia 1020. Who is this person, Nokia? Give an answer. Doesn't give an answer.

Nokia went even further in the photo business, releasing simultaneously with the phone a special photo cover with an additional 1020 mAh battery - Nokia Camera Grip. Behind 2300 rubles at your service is a more weighty and ergonomic device (or rather a prefix to it), which to some extent is able to save your pictures from the syndrome trembling hands... In addition, it becomes possible to use a tripod for shooting, which would seem to be too much. Nokia sees the sense in this and apparently makes a real emphasis on competition with full-fledged system and even SLR cameras. But we would advise you not to take seriously the fantastical but laudable ambitions of the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer.

The battery capacity in Nokia Lumia 1020 is 2000 mAh... This is enough to take more than one hundred photos, spending a full day of light to review the main attractions, if you want to use this particular smartphone as the main camera on a trip. However, for periodic calls, as well as constant use of 3G and Wi-Fi, the battery will last for a maximum of 1-1.5 days. We still have to wait for a real revolution and breakthrough in energy efficiency.

Recently, all the newfangled ones have turned out to be quite contradictory, in which both positive aspects and frankly negative qualities are organically combined. Nokia Lumia 1020 is no exception. The price that must be paid for the specified device is also not quite adequate - 27,000 rubles... Needless to say, this is the full cost of a more or less productive phone, as well as a very high level camera. Moreover, for this money you can buy both, and there will be change.

In any case, do not deny yourself the pleasure and admire those photos that the camera in Nokia Lumia 1020 can create (by the way, only the built-in sensor, without using a weak and not the brightest flash). Do not forget that this is, first of all, a mobile phone. And could you imagine five years ago that such a thing is even possible?
