Another innovation of the developers is the arrangement of the "0", "pound" and "asterisk" keys: now this trio is not at the bottom of the keyboard, as everyone is used to seeing, but at the right edge. Frankly speaking, Nokia X3 is not the best decision of the Finnish company. The touch screen is not implemented in the best way: it is inconvenient to operate it. There are some design flaws such as a convex protective glass and a non-standard arrangement of the "0", "lattice" and "star" keys.

Among the advantages, we single out a loud speaker, a good set of audio and video codecs, a nice design, a battery and, perhaps, that's all. Positioning

For Nokia, the release of touchscreen phones based on the S40 platform is a natural development of competition in the market. Nokia's products have found themselves in the grip of Chinese and Korean manufacturers, which about 3 years ago relied on the development of the touchscreen phone market. As a result, today's budget touchscreen models cost less than a hundred dollars, and this market is growing very quickly. Nokia did not have an adequate response to such devices, as a result, the company had to aggressively reduce prices for smartphones based on S60. This did not allow the company to position such devices in the middle segment, made it necessary to move to other platforms in the top segment and choose MeeGo as such a platform.

Under the motto “cheap and cheerful”, the company could launch budget smartphones based on S60, but their cost still remained higher than that of conventional, touchscreen models from competitors. For Nokia, this meant a decline in revenues, and therefore the company began to develop the S40 with touch screens. Development began about 2 years ago, but was constantly slipping. The problem was that it was necessary not only to redesign the S40's interface for finger control, but also to rewrite the browser, maps and a number of other applications. Nokia began to develop the S40 of the sixth edition, but programmers did not have time to write the code. In fact, the creation of the Compact UI was supposed to be the first step towards touch phones, it was preparation for the release of an interface that can be operated by fingers. For example, this version significantly increased the interface elements, although the sixth edition remained non-touch. Since the development was tied to individual interface elements, as well as applications, the release of Touch & Type (S40 6th Edition FP1) was also delayed.

It is based on the idea that some modern users prefer a regular keyboard, do not choose touchscreen phones, as they want to type blindly. But at the same time, he is actively looking at touchscreen phones, as he wants to try something new. It is for this group of hesitants that the Touch & Type line is intended. This is a hybrid solution, which retained the keyboard, but added touch screens (so far low resolution and with a small diagonal). It is rather difficult to estimate the number of users who can choose such hybrid solutions, but in fact it turns out that there are not many of them. The first month of Nokia X3-02 sales showed a complete failure of this concept, sales are very low for a model with such functionality and such a price range. Roughly the same for С3-01. This means that the market, and as a result, the users did not accept the idea of \u200b\u200bhybrid devices.

Indeed, such phones have rather controversial ergonomics. For example, I didn’t like the fact that typing is carried out on the keyboard, and the character (key C) should be erased using the notation on the screen. Likewise, moving your hand from the keyboard to the screen and back is working with different surfaces. None of the users have such an unusual feeling, and from the point of view of ergonomics, this option is controversial. As well as the selection of time in the calendar is carried out from the keyboard, and the scrolling of the list - using the screen. It turns out that the screen acts as a navigation key and replaces it. This is logical, but rather controversial. For the older generation, this version of the phone is definitely unacceptable (there may be exceptions here, but the survey showed that older people are confused). For young people, this is a surrogate for touchscreen phones, as a result, and sales here are not high. In middle age, this phone can be attractive at the right price. But considering the presence of a large number of non-touch Nokia models at a lower price and with equal functionality, this model loses. It turns out that the long creation time of the Touch & Type series played a bad trick on the company. Incorrect cost positioning was added here. It is necessary to realize that this is a niche offer that will not become massive under any circumstances (massive for its segment with a noticeable level of sales relative to existing Nokia counterparts).

In my opinion, these are kind of models that can either be liked or not. For an amateur. Moreover, it is impossible to say that you like them or not until you try this device. It also narrows down the audience for a given product. The increase in sales will be possible with the installation of high-resolution screens (second generation Touch & Type, summer 2011), as well as the addition of a virtual keyboard for typing. The next logical step would be to completely abandon the keyboard, but as far as I know, such models are not being developed in the S40 line. This means that the Touch & Type series will remain a niche, temporary product. It will be interesting to see how many models Nokia will launch on the market in 2011. In the meantime, this is a kind of experiment that has reached the mass market. But these models have few prospects.

Design, dimensions, controls

The design of X3-02 is somewhat Asian, the model does not look European, and it is not without reason that it was presented for the first time in Singapore. A very dubious decision regarding 3 rows of keys instead of the usual 4.

The device is available in 5 colors (Petrol blue, White silver, Pink, Dark metal, Lilac).

Unlike the C3-01, which uses not only plastic, but also metal, this phone has a plastic case. We left only a thin metal cover covering the battery. But the thickness of the metal is strikingly different from the same C3-01. It was assumed that the difference in price between the models would be noticeable, but in fact, at the moment this is not the case.

At the top there is a 2 mm charger jack, a 3.5 mm headset jack, and a microUSB jack (supports charging). On the right side there is a paired volume rocker, a screen and keyboard lock button. This key is very strange. You can lock the screen with one click, but you can only unlock it by pressing the button and then pressing the key drawn on the screen. Very strange. I would have done otherwise. For example, a long hold to unlock, or two short presses. It's more convenient this way, and what Nokia's programmers have done looks like a perversion.

The phone measures 106.2 x 48.4 x 9.6 mm and weighs 78 grams. The phone fits perfectly in the hand, the weight is pleasant. But unlike the C3-01, I don't really like the model, there is a feeling of cheapness.

The diagonal of the screen is 2.4 inches, which is not much for a full-fledged touchscreen, but on the other hand, it is quite enough for such a hybrid solution. The resolution is low - 240x320 pixels, but considering that the interface was specially made with large elements for finger control, that's enough. The screen is resistive, in cold weather you can control it even with gloves.

The screen is budget-friendly, can display up to 262K colors (TFT). The screen is readable in the sun, we say "thanks" to the large interface elements. The viewing angles are not the best, but that doesn't matter much. In most lists, 5-6 lines fit on the screen; in a browser, for example, it can be a large number of lines (up to 14).

Keyboard

The keys are large, they are made of plastic and have minimal travel. Considering that there are three rows of keys, zero and two other buttons are moved to the right. The ergonomics of such a solution are very dubious, and I never got used to it. The backlight is bright, the color of the backlight depends on the color of the case. It cannot be said that the ergonomics of the keyboard are at the level of other solutions. She is dubious.

Battery

The phone uses a BL-4S lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 860 mAh. According to the manufacturer, the phone can work up to 6 hours of talk time and up to 430 hours of standby time. Music playing time - up to 25 hours.

The operating time of the device averages about 2.5 days in the conditions of Moscow cellular networks. At the same time, you can talk for up to one and a half hours, take a couple of dozen pictures, record a couple of minutes of video and listen to radio or music for up to three hours. Fully charging the battery takes about 2.5 hours.

Here is the maximum operating time in various modes:

USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi

USB... In the USB settings, you can select one of 3 operating modes:

• Data Storage (Mass Storage USB) - both phone memory and memory cards are visible, no drivers are required, the OS recognizes the phone itself.
• OVI Suite - work with OVI Suite, to all functions of the device, backup of all information, and so on.
• Media - photo printing, MTP mode.

The data transfer rate is about 5 Mb / s. When connected, the battery is charged.

This unit has a USB Host, when connecting the adapter, you can use external USB drives, in particular, for copying files. In Nokia's terminology, this feature is called USB on the Go, and is promoted only on Nokia N8, although it is present on many inexpensive S40 phones.

Wi-Fi... There is a network search wizard, you can save them in memory. Unfortunately, the phone does not automatically launch the WLAN wizard when connected in a browser. 802.11 b / g / n (WPA2 AES / TKIP) is supported.

Memory

The user has access to about 30 MB of memory in the device itself (only 48 MB), in which any data can be stored. Memory is shared dynamically among all applications. Memory cards - microSD, the slot is located on the side, hot-swappable, no card included. The maximum capacity of memory cards is limited to 16 GB. The amount of RAM is 64 MB. For applications, the size is limited to 2 MB, as well as the heap size is 2 MB.

Camera

A 5-megapixel CMOS module without autofocus is used (fixed focus from 20 centimeters to infinity, EDoF). For a phone of this price level, the camera raises no problems. On sunny days, the pictures are good, they can be viewed on a PC without any special remarks. By no means upward dreams, but not outright disgusting. A kind of golden mean for your money.

The camera interface is horizontal (S40 Simple), the side key allows you to quickly call the camera. Pictures are saved quickly enough. The maximum resolution is 2592x1944 pixels. Check out sample images to rate them.

Video recording... The device allows recording video in 3GP format, video resolution - 640x480 pixels (15 frames per second). You can limit the duration of the recording, but it can be maximum as long as the memory of the card or the device runs out. Effects can be applied to videos in the same way as to photos, their number is the same. When viewed on the phone, the video quality is quite acceptable, including in the maximum resolution. Artifacts are visible on the PC, but the video can be watched, which is a big plus of the model.

Software

All the features of the phone and the platform used are described in detail in a separate article, please read it. Below are the snapshots of the pre-installed applications, they do not need any explanation.

The games are represented by several applications - Climate Mission - a kind of contrived toy with an ecological theme; Memorize (memory development), Picture Puzzle (tags from the picture).

In the Applications section you can find Communities (a rather limited client for Facebook, Twitter), unit converter, clothing size converter, world clock, Opera Mini.

The device has OVI Chat, which allows you to communicate with other OVI users, which is nice. Unfortunately, there are only a few such users, and there is no support for other services. On the other hand, this application is removed to the background and can receive messages in it, there are the beginnings of multitasking. Let's see how the application will develop, if it gets support from AIM, ICQ and Skype, then it can become interesting. But this is unlikely to happen.
