Recovery of pictures on the computer. How to recover deleted photos on Android smartphones - and how. How to recover deleted photos with TestDisk

In general, Android is a very interesting operating system and one day you may find that all the photos in the phone have been deleted. Do not rush to rush into a panic, read the article and learn how to restore photos on Android if they were accidentally deleted.

How to be

Go to Google Play and download the Undeleter program. Please note that you need root access on your phone. If not, read on the site. If there is, we find and launch the application. We see 2 disks: internal memory and memory card, select the desired one.

That's it - the program began to scan the memory and look for photos that you deleted. Now it remains to wait for the scan to finish. It is best to connect the smartphone to the charger during this process, since the battery is consumed very much during scanning.

After the process is complete, you will see many files that have ever been deleted.

You can sort them by different parameters: progress, size or type. To restore a photo, you need to go to the “Images” tab and scroll to look for the pictures you need.

Hurrah! Photo found. Just click on the save icon in the upper right corner and find your recovered photos in the gallery. As you can see, everything is very simple.

A photo mistakenly deleted from a computer or flash drive is an annoying nuisance. Do not despair, because in most cases you can restore photos, only for this you have to use specialized programs.

What programs exist

There are a lot of software for recovery procedures and it differs in the percentage of the ability to return lost files. There are, for example, very powerful programs like or File Scavenger, which recover deleted photos even after repeatedly formatting the media.

It should be noted right away that the best photo recovery program is RS Photo Recovery, however it is paid, but if you want to save your time and nerves, we highly recommend it to you. In our memory, no one had problems with it. You can find how to purchase and use the program.

How to recover deleted photos using Recuva

The free version of Recuva is perhaps the most popular file recovery product, on the example of which we will analyze the whole process. Immediately, we note that all such software is “sharpened” not only for the jpg, raw and other graphic file formats, but is a comprehensive program for working with lost data. But since we are interested in the question of how to recover deleted photos, let us dwell on the most popular format - jpg.

Install Recuva on a computer

This free program has a user-friendly interface and is extremely easy to use.

Installation is standard:

Comment. In the “actions” tab, from the settings menu, you should choose recovery options from hidden folders, display securely deleted items, deep analysis, work with damaged media and restore folder structure.

Search

Comment. After formatting the external media in another file system, it will be impossible to restore deleted files.

Photo Recovery

At the end of the search, a list of found graphic files will be displayed. Recuva will show which options are suitable for recovery (green circle), with which problems may arise (yellow) and lost (red). In the checkboxes, check the boxes next to the necessary photos (their preview is available on the right) and click the “restore” button, after which we indicate the place for their placement.

Comment. To avoid errors, the location of the recovered files is best indicated on the hard disk of the computer, and not on external media.

Some features of Recuva software

The free version of the program, according to the developers, does not have the function of improved file recovery, but there are no special differences according to user reviews. After deep formatting with a change in the file system, both the paid and free versions are equally problematic to recover information, so you may not notice much difference.

How to restore photos to users of Mac OS or Linux platforms

Recuva, although it is most widely used on Windows, but the Mac OS version works just as well. Both options can be downloaded on the official website, but for Linux there are no problems at all - the Wine interface can easily cope with the latest “windowed" versions.

I will answer your questions: why the photos are not displayed in the Android gallery (the phone does not show the photo) or the photos open in low quality. What should I do if the images are not saved in the Gallery? Answers posted below.

3 programs that will restore photos from the Android Gallery

Among the programs for photo recovery, we note three free tools: DiskDigger, Recuva, PhotoRec.

These programs will be useful if photos from the Gallery were deleted, damaged or lost as a result of unsuccessful file copying:

  • from the internal memory of the phone to the sd card;
  • from phone to computer.

We recommend testing the above programs with the deep scan option. Programs are installed on a PC. Saving photos of the Gallery should be on the hard drive, not the sd-card, otherwise the deleted files will be overwritten and the chances of recovery will be significantly reduced.

Change the storage location for photos

Many Android users install a new memory card into their phones and are surprised to find that the photos and videos they have taken are still saved in the phone’s memory.

You can easily change the storage location of photos. For this:

  • Go to Camera Settings
  • Find the Storage Location option
  • Change it to an SD card.

Free the memory card from unnecessary files

If the captured photos are not saved to the memory card, but to the phone (although the SD card is specified in the settings), most likely, the memory card simply does not have enough space and Android uses the phone's memory as a spare.

To fix the situation, check the free disk space: Settings - Optimization - Memory.

If necessary, delete unnecessary files on the phone. You can do this:

  • through the Optimization section
  • using utilities CCleaner, CleanMaster for Android
  • manually, through any file manager.

Format the memory card and check for read errors

Another known problem - photos are displayed incorrectly / periodically disappear from the Gallery. The reason is reading errors on the memory card.

Solving the problem is quite simple:

  1. Format memory card
  2. Check the disk for errors using the chkdsk utility

Where are the photo galleries stored?

Remember the folder name - DCIM (Digital Camera IMages).

All photos taken with the camera are stored in the Camera directory on the memory card or in the phone. For the convenience of organization, you can create other folders inside DCIM.

Note. DCIM (and subfolders) should not have files named nomedia (this is a signal for the media scanner to ignore its contents).

If the Android Gallery does not display a photo, check the contents of the DCIM folder via the PC:

  • by connecting the phone to the computer via usb cable
  • by attaching an SD card through a card reader.

If photos are found, copy them to your PC; if not, use recovery programs.

Clear Gallery Cache

If the Gallery displays gray or black squares instead of thumbnails, clear the cache. Before performing this step, we recommend that you reserve files from DCIM on your hard drive.

The main reasons for removing photos from the Gallery

1. Formatting a memory card

Users often forget that formatting a memory card often deletes all files stored on the sd card, including write-protected photos and print orders. Such multimedia data can only be restored using special recovery software for deleted photos.

2. Overwrite and delete photos

A very common mistake is accidentally overwriting images, photos stored on the camera's memory card, and other data. In fact, rewriting a photo is very easy to do by mistake. Therefore, we advise you to verify the correctness of the action several times when you record photos on your computer or on the device’s memory card.

3. Damage or breakdown of the sd card of the camera

If the memory card, hard drive or flash drive, or any storage medium is unreliable, they are at great risk of physical damage if they are accidentally dropped or directly exposed to them. We strongly advise you to keep the cameras themselves, and sd cards, and flash drives wrapped in dense and soft material that will protect them - and, accordingly, your photos - from bumps under any conditions.

FAQ

Photos not showing up in Samsung Phone Gallery

This morning I did not find photos on the memory card of the Samsung phone. I go to the Gallery - no photo; in the folder where the photos used to be, there is only one file. I open it - and they write to me that there is no application to perform this operation.

Decision.

  1. Check the memory card for errors by connecting it to a PC through a card reader.
  2. Scan the sd card with any desktop recovery application, for example Photorec or Recuva.
  3. If photos synced online, check out Google Photos or Samsung Cloud, including the Trash.

Decision.

  1. Clear the Android Gallery cache.
  2. Update the official firmware if there is an update.

I have an ASUS phone, I don’t have a flash drive ... An icon has appeared with a warning that the device’s memory is full. I set the phone to be updated and went to sleep. In the morning I wanted to review the photo, but there are no folders with photos in the Gallery, and I don’t find it through the PC either ...

Decision.

  1. Install the root application on the phone, check the phone's memory through DiskDigger.

Gray squares instead of photos in the Android gallery (black pictures with an exclamation mark)

2. I bought a 32GB sd card, connected it and moved the photos from the device to a new folder on the sd card. After moving, I went to the Gallery. Instead of thumbnails, a gray square and an exclamation mark.

You can do this manually using the CCleaner utility for Android or, for example, the Storage Analyzer application.

Deleted files from a smartphone or tablet cannot be returned using the built-in functions of the gadget. For these purposes, there are special programs, but they do not guarantee 100% success, although the chances are quite high.

In the framework of this article, we will consider the question: how to restore a photo on an android after deletion and provide links to programs that will best cope with this task.

Why data is not deleted permanently?

All information storage devices work on a single principle. When you delete any information on the device, only the file entry from the file table disappears, and the file itself remains in the device’s memory. However, the Android OS defines the area in which "already deleted information" was stored as free.

It turns out that the saved files, applications, documents, photos, videos will be recorded in the freed memory sector. Accordingly, the information contained in this sector will be overwritten.

Therefore, if you want to restore a photo on an android or regular deletion, do not write anything else before you restore the data. Saving new data can aggravate the situation and significantly reduce the chances of resuscitating photos.

  Recovery Software

All Android applications that recover files need Root rights. If your device is not rooted, use a computer to restore.

Advice!   If you want to restore a photo on an android without a computer, the material in this article will help.

  DiskDigger photo recovery

The utility installs on Android. The free application allows you to return lost photos. If you want to return other data, use the paid Pro version.

An application can work without root privileges, but then its capabilities will be limited. All she can do is scan cached data and thumbnails from the .thumbnails folder. When granting superuser rights, DiskDigger will search and restore photos across the entire memory of your gadget.
