Select a DVD player. A broken Chinese DVD player.

So, you decided to purchase DVD player. Now there are a lot of varieties of DVD players and the problem of choice is acute.

When you ask the store manager for advice, he begins to litter obscure technical terms and try to sell the model more expensive.
  You can certainly take an expensive model of a well-known manufacturer (Sony, Philips, Panasonic, JVC, LG, Toshiba, Sharp), but this is not the best solution. It is possible in five minutes, after reading this article to understand the new technologies and consciously make a choice.

What is a DVD?

DVD - optical disk, which is almost indistinguishable from an ordinary CD, but it contains 7 times more information. What it gives you: better sound and high image quality.
  A DVD player is a device that allows you to read DVD discs. In addition, it can read regular drives, MP3, DivX, VideoCD, JPEG, etc.
  Well, and I began to pour incomprehensible terms. Let's try to understand the terms.

Technologies.

Under conventionalCd  meant disks from the music center. They are also called AudioCd.
MP3  - format of music. Maybe you met CDs marked as MP3. This format allows one CD to hold up to 12 hours of music, which is its advantage.
WMA  -The same as MP3.
DivX  - The format in which the video is recorded on a CD. On one disc up to 1.5 hours of video. This is the format that came from the world of computers. What will it give you? If your friends have a computer, then you can take their discs and watch on your DVD (if the player supports this format). In addition, such drives are cheaper than DVD, although the quality is lower.
VideoCD  - The old video format. One film fits as much on two discs at a quality comparable to VHS.
JPEG  is a format for photos and drawings that can be recorded on a CD. If your DVD player supports this format, you can view the photos in the digital format, received from digital cameras, cameras, phones. Especially advanced models are equipped with devices for obtaining photos directly from cameras and other devices, but this is already a topic for a separate article.
Karaoke- Well, everything is clear here. There is support, then you and your friends can sing your favorite songs.
DD 5.1 - this technology is abbreviated in price lists. The full name is DolbyDigital. This is the audio format used to create the presence effect. In the cinemas were? Here DolbyDigital will create your home theater. Prefix 5.1 means that you can connect a 5.1 speaker system consisting of five small speakers (satellites) and one large speaker (subwoofer). Why as many as six columns, you ask? Five satellites create a spatial effect, and the subwoofer reproduces realistic bass.
Home Theater  - This term is often used to call a DVD player with DolbyDigital support and Dolby Digital sound system. It begs the conclusion: if you do not have enough money for a full set, you can first take a DVD player, and then buy an acoustic system.

Varieties of DVD players

DVD Changer- roughly the same as a normal CD changer. Say, if you want, without getting up from the couch to watch all the series of your favorite TV series.
DVD + VHS video recorder- DVD player and VCR in one casing. The main advantage is compactness. When choosing this unit, please be aware that both devices are controlled from the same remote control, which leads to more complicated control. Also, when recording with DVD disc  on the video cassette you will lose 2-7 seconds, despite the function of synchronous start.
DVD Receiver -a device that combines a DVD player, an AV decoder, a multi-channel power amplifier and a radio in one housing. Complete such a device with passive speakers, connect to a TV, and get a ready home theater. The disadvantage is that it is impossible to improve the system by sound power. A clear advantage is the cheapness of the finished solution.
DVD Recorders  - with the ability to record. You can program a recording of an interesting movie or a program. Also you can rewrite the home video collection on compact and durable DVDs.

Advice to the buyer.

Now you have enough information to not get confused in terms. Before you escape to the store, pay attention to a few more things.
The DVD player is selected for TV.

If you have a simple TV with a diagonal of 21``, then you should not buy a super-sleek DVD player. You will not feel the joy of high quality of the image.
Pay attention to the connectors that your TV is equipped with (if necessary, see the instructions). The quality of the image will depend greatly on which connector the DVD player is connected to. Listing from the highest quality to the lower: Component signal input, S-video, SCART, Composite signal input.
  It's good if your TV is equipped with a SCART connector. In this case, the DVD player must also have SCART. SCART is a universal connector, it transmits video, audio and control signals. In this case, only one SCART-SCART cord is enough to connect, which will save you from confusion from various wires.

Audio system.

You can take a ready-made home theater solution, or buy a DVD player and acoustics separately. This issue also needs to be resolved before buying a DVD player.
  If you have a road with support DD 5.1, then the acoustics should be chosen appropriate. Do not overdo the power of the speaker system. If the room in which the home theater is installed is small, then a total power of 140 watts is sufficient. To connect the AV receiver (amplifier) to the DVD player is an optical cord, this will give a higher sound quality.
  For an inexpensive DVD player, at first there will be enough acoustics built into the TV. Not everyone can afford to immediately throw $ 200-500 into a home theater.

Functionality.

Decide what functions you want to see in the DVD player.

  • Do you need a recording function?
  • Do I need a CD changer?
  • Do I need to read data from digital devices (Bloototh, digital camera memory cards, etc.)?
  • Do I need a karaoke function (cheap models may not support this format)?

Now and for shopping:

Have you already decided what you need? An approximate image of your future purchase has already been traced.

You can safely go to the store. Questions and terms of managers now upload you.

Today, when the cassette video players have already completely forgotten everything, and cinephiles, music lovers and amateurs to arrange a karaoke party only increased, the choice of a good CD player is an important issue for many people. CD-player, it's a DVD-player - a device for reading laser discs with the output of images and sound on one or more external devices. Another 15 years ago, any such disc player was called SD-player. The name is still used. Now in detail we will understand how to choose a reliable DVD-player for a pleasant time of forwarding.

How to choose a good DVD player

Any choice, including the choice of a good CD player, is associated with a clear awareness of their capabilities and needs. What is important to you? Exceptional image and sound quality, the ability to play video of any format, design, size, reliability, ease of use and customization. But if you do not know where to start, start with the TV. There are many options with which to start thinking through your choice. The starting point can be a producer or a functional, it can be personal preferences. But if you remember where any DVD player pulls its wires, then the answer becomes obvious. The majority of buyers already have a TV set and it is necessary to start choosing precisely with its capabilities. If you are a happy owner of a TV with a diagonal of more than 30 inches, then you should take a responsible approach to choosing a future CD player. Those shortcomings of the image that the owner of a small screen will not notice will be clearly visible to you, and can significantly spoil your mood. However, if the screen diagonal of your TV does not exceed 25 inches, you will be well suited for "budget" models of any worthy brand, for example Pioneer and LG. They are available starting from 2000 to 5000 rubles. Separately it is necessary to mention a sound. You can buy the best DVD player and put the sound on the TV, but then you will pay for something that you will not hear. Modern players allow you to transfer sound, divided by channels, creating a voluminous sound. Even a supermodern TV is not capable of this.

Main characteristics of DVD players

It does not matter if you are looking for the best CD player or inexpensive but good, it's always a good idea to first walk through all the characteristics of CD players. They differ by:

  • Characteristics of DACs: Quality directly depends on them. Important parameters are: sampling rate - BH and bit depth - bit rate. From BH depends how quickly the chip of the DVD-player digitizes the signal and converts it into an analog one. Bitwidth is responsible for signal quality. The higher the BH and the bit depth, the better the sound or video. The following DAC parameters are considered to be good: video bit depth 12 bits, sampling frequency 108 MHz; audio - bit 24 bits, sampling rate of 192 kHz.
  • Supported image enhancement technologies. Every manufacturer of a CD player boasts its own functions, but often they just have a different name and implementation. This aspect should be paid attention to particularly picky moviegoers, as well as the owners of huge modern TVs. In the specifications of each device, these technologies are prescribed, but trying to clarify this point from the seller is useless, it is better to look for information on the Internet itself.
  • Supported formats: almost all available devices on the market support audio formats: AAC, Audio CD, CD Text, MP3, WMA, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD; video formats: MPEG4, DivX, MPEG1 and MPEG2; image formats: JPEG and PNG. Support for such standards is a kind of standard, but in the specifications when buying a DVD-player on them, you should still pay attention, suddenly there is not enough for you.

Video Outputs

The connectors of the DVD player are divided into two types: audio and video. Each of them is divided into two more types: digital and analog. Analog video connectors have four types:

  • Video 1RCA (composite) - analog composite input or output for direct connection to a TV. It is made in the form of one wire and one connector. Weak in quality. The components of brightness and chromaticity in it are mixed (and therefore composite). Rarely found on the cases of CD players.
  • S-Video (Separate Video) - analog component (brightness and chrominance components separated) input / output. Direct connection to external visualization device (TV, projector). It has one wire and one connector. You can find almost any DVD-player on the case.
  • SCART or Y / Pb / Pr - analog component input / output of audio and video signals for direct connection to the visualization device. It is made in the form of a single wire with a flat and wide connector.
  • Video 3RCA or Y / Cb / Cr-analog component input or output. Direct connection to the visualization device. Has the cleanest and clearest signal from all analog. Can be made in the form of a cable with three wires and three connectors.

You can not bypass the digital connectors. On a DVD player they are usually represented by DVI and HDMI interfaces. These are two relatively young types of digital connections that can only be connected to a compatible technology, provided with the appropriate connection. The speed of the connection through these connectors is very high. They are designed to provide interaction with computer equipment, so they have full compatibility with it. HDMI-interface to everything else supports the technology of protection against pirated copying. Without this standard, now there is not a single high-quality DVD player.

But what about audio?

Now remember that we talked about connecting audio. Do not bring it from the DVD player to the TV, because of the weakness of the speaker system of the latter. Specially for DVD technologies are developed - Dolby Digital and Digital Theater, which in the presence of a good acoustic system realize the surround sound. So, the sound in the DVD is divided into 6 channels - they correspond to 6 analog output cables, and 6 columns to which cables lead. These are five columns: 2 front (right and left), 2 rear (right and left), center and subwoofer. The subwoofer is needed for playing the lowest frequencies, the rest are distributed among the speakers. The subwoofer is separated from all others. Therefore, the systems are called six-channel and are denoted as 5.1. Now any, even a budget DVD player supports this technology, and has on its back 6 holes for RCA cables, for each respective column. But the best sound quality is obtained by digital output of sound to the amplifier. Of course, both the audio system and the CD player should have the proper jacks for this.

If you broke the Chinese DVD player - do not rush to carry it to the trash if you are not married. If married, then, on the contrary, hurry to avoid long philosophical conversations on the topic "what are the necessary things" and "lie down a little - this is how much?".

The Chinese player is a source of various nishtyaks. For example, a ready IR receiver (and if you managed not to sow the remote from the player - then the transmitter) for building remote control systems of amazing meaninglessness:

Yes, this is a black thing with three legs. With pleasure, he eats the parcels from any remote, giving out on the output a luxurious TTL / CMOS compatible pulse. Inside of itself, by the way, the black thing contains a rather complicated scheme, including AGC and bandpass filter.

Or, for example, here is such a breathtaking vacuum-luminescent display, which directly asks to be built somewhere in an electro-punk craft in the style of the 80s of the XX century:

With such displays everything is fine, except that to manage them you need to fence a garden out of a bundle of high-voltage transistors of unobvious polarity, and for power they need something about 24-27 volts. Well, the second, let's say, you can somehow make with the help of PWM and IRF630 with a throttle ... and the first one does not present a problem if you look at the reverse side of the board:

Modest microcircuit PT6312 - the controller for such here displays-lollipops. Inside itself contains everything you need, and even more so:
- controlled by SPI
- supports a matrix of buttons 6x4
- can do 8-step brightness control
- has 4 outputs for connecting LEDs (up to 20mA per channel)
- has 4 general purpose inputs
- is functionally compatible with μpD16312 (the FIG knows what it is, copied it from the datasheet)
- placed in a convenient 44-pin LQFP housing, quite suitable for LUT

The typical scheme of connection looks absolutely not terrible even for the graduate of an engineering-economic school:

The difficulty with all these treasures is exactly one - to figure out what to adapt them to. Maybe it was really easier to throw it out right away.

DVD players  are an indispensable attribute of modern life. Like any other technique DVD players  requires careful handling and care. Regular care will help prolong the life of the DVD player and avoid premature repair. Caring for a DVD includes periodic cleaning of the lens with a special cleaning disc. It is also necessary to regularly clean the case DVD player  from dust and dirt, as one of the reasons that player ceases read discs, are accumulations of dust. Do not use the player near heaters. Install DVD players  It is necessary in such a way that air is provided to the ventilation holes. B must be used, recommended by the manufacturer.

When you try to watch a movie or listen to music dvd-drive does not see disk  and writes insert the disc. Maybe, dvd-drive  do not support reading  some disc formats. To more accurately determine the problem, you need to know the drive model and disk format that dvd-drive does not see.

The servo system of the laser head when reading data from the disk is initially switched on at full power (the maximum current flows through the laser diode). Further, the power is reduced to the level required for the normal operation of the servo laser head system. If you use poor-quality or defective discs, the servo system keeps running at maximum, as a result, the maximum currents flow through the focusing and tracking coils, causing their overheating. When using low-quality discs, the DVD player often "hangs", the laser head becomes uncontrolled. If the DVD player "freezes", it is not recommended to keep it in this state for long, you need to turn off the power or press "reset". To extend the life of the laser head of the DVD player, it is recommended to use only quality discs.

Repair of DVD player without spare parts

Basic DVD malfunctions and how to fix them

Before going to the main topic, we will get acquainted with the main malfunctions, signs and methods of their elimination.

The main reasons for the malfunction of the DVD / CD player include:

  • failure of the laser head;
  • failure of the spindle motor;
  • in rare cases, decoder boards;

As a rule, the device stops reading the discs of any of the supported format of the player, or stops reading the format of MP3 and DVD, starts to lose some moments with a delay or even gives a message: "NO DISK", after pressing the "OPEN" key, the carriage moves out and the disc continues to rotate .

In general, fault data is eliminated by replacing a faulty component or module. In rare cases, you can get by cleaning the laser head.

You can repair the DVD player yourself using only the following accessories and accessories:

  • standard set of screwdrivers;
  • the simplest Ohmmeter;
  • cotton wool and alcohol;
  • machine oil;

Algorithm repair DVD player

Without a service manual, I developed the following repair algorithm.

Check the resistance of motor windings. A good motor should have a resistance of 12 ohms. If the resistance is below 4-6 ohms, remove the engine, disassemble it, clean the brushes and collector contacts. Then lubricate the motor shaft. If it does not help, go on to the next item.

Cleaning the head. We wind a piece of cotton wool on a match, wet it with alcohol and gently clean it. Watch out so that the head does not have villi from cotton wool.

Adjustment of laser current. We will consider this point in more detail. At first glance, you may find it ridiculous, and someone will say how it is possible without special measuring equipment, but believe that 80% of faults are eliminated with this particular adjustment. And so on in more detail.

On the laser head board, most often in the vicinity of the connector of the loop, there is a variable resistor, the same one with which the laser current is tuned. To get to it in most cases you can not dismantle the CD-mechanism. Sometimes it is more convenient to do this by setting the laser head to the extreme position. In some cases, disassembly is required. Find the right screwdriver. Remember in what position is the slider of the resistor.

  • 3.1. Slightly carefully rotate the slider of the resistor about 1-2 degrees clockwise;
  • 3.2. After that, we connect all loops and wires (if they are disconnected);
  • 3.3. We install a disk with a format that was not read in this machine or read with interrupts. We press "PLAY". If the unit does not read the discs at all, it is recommended to install an Audio CD;
  • 3. We wait 20-30 seconds (let the laser focus);
  • 3.5.If did not help, we repeat paragraph 3.1-3.4.
  • 3.6.If the repetition of items 3.1-3.4 several times (usually from 2 to 5) did not lead to any results, it is advisable to return the slider of the resistor to the position in which it was before adjustment and perform the same operations only by turning it counterclockwise.

After several such settings, you can quickly adjust the laser for 1-2 minutes without any problems, without special measuring equipment and without a service manual-service manual.

If nothing has helped, maybe your laser head is really completely out of order. But as a rule this happens very rarely. Anyone even very much podsevshy laser can be forced to read at least discs Audio CD.

Author of the article: Project Manager Anymanuals

If the DVD player has broken down, it is not necessary to throw it out or carry it to the workshop and pay money for repairs. You can disassemble and even repair the device yourself.

The device and principle of the DVD player

The player consists of a casing with a disc loading tray. On the front of the case there are: a status display, control buttons for the player, on some models there may be connectors for connecting a microphone, headphones, flash drives. Inside the case, everything is much more interesting.

Briefly about the main components of the device.

CPU

This is the main element of the player. It consumes electricity from a pulsed power supply.

Laser reading head

It is used to read information from the media. A wide flexible loop connects the reading head to the base plate. All disk media have an installation path necessary for proper operation. It is located in the center. When the disc is loaded, the laser moves to the center to read this track. If the read is successful, the disc is installed, and only then the rotation motor is turned on and the disc starts to play.

Electric motor of spindle drive

The motor communicates with the processor via the driver. The speed of rotation of the disk depends on the signals of the processor.

Driver

It is a chip that receives commands from the processor and controls the operation of the spindle drive motor, the laser lens focusing coil, the laser reader travel motor, the loading and unloading motor of the tray.

Scheme of DVD player

Is it possible to repair yourself?

"How many devices and wires! I'd better take him to the workshop! "- you will say with horror, clutching at the head. But! Do not rush to spend money. There are such breakages that can easily be identified and eliminated with a conventional screwdriver.

If the player does not turn on

There can be many reasons. Consider the most elementary and common. Remove the cover of the player and diagnose the power cord for internal damage. To check the operation of the multimeter, we turn it into the resistance measurement mode. We connect the probes to each other. If the device is working, the display will show zeros. Open the test leads to the cord. One probe to the contact of the cable in the place of connection with the board, the other one alternately to one of the plug contacts. If the ohmmeter gives out up to 3 ohms, it's lived without damage. If more, then in the vein there is a breakthrough, and the cord is to be replaced. If the multimeter does not react, then the contact on the plug and on the opposite end does not belong to one conductor of the electrical wire. It is not recommended to use the multimeter in the continuity mode, since it operates in the range from 0 to several hundred ohms. The next step is to inspect the presence of dust and blown condensers. Dust is removed, we change the capacitors. If visual malfunctions are not detected, and the wire change has not changed the situation, take the player to the workshop.

The video below shows how the multimeter works.

How to ring a wire

If the disks are not readable

Consider the main reasons for the breakdown and how to deal with them.

Head malfunction

Causes: the laser head is dirty or the laser is out of order.

The contaminated head is blown with compressed air using a conventional rubber pear. Lens lens wipe with a cotton swab moistened with alcohol. Do not use solvents. To wipe it is necessary very accurately easy movements. If cleaning is not enough, the head must be replaced.

Cleaning on video

Laser head replacement

Connector Loop Fault

The loop often breaks on the folds. We disassemble the player in the same way as when servicing the laser head. Carefully pull out the cable from the plugs. We examine. If there are visible gaps around the edges, and you do not want to change the plume completely, do a preliminary repair. We cut the place of damage with scissors. Remove the insulation layer with a knife or blade so as not to break the metal strips. If it does not work out neatly, then you can try to remove the insulation with a medical needle or zero nazhdachkoy. The width of the stripped layer should be the same as the cut piece of the cable. Remove the blue plastic end plate with the trimming and similarly glue it to the renewed edge of the plume with the help of a super glue.

Restore the loop to video

Now, when the visual loop appears to be whole, we call its contacts. We attach one probe to the contact from one end, and the other one alternately to all contacts from the other end. Do the same on the other side of the loop. Each contact must call with one contact on the other side. If the contact rings with several, then the loop is shorted. If the contact does not ring with any other, then the loop is broken. And in either case, the plume is not usable. It is necessary to replace it.

Engine malfunction

If the motor rotates unevenly or does not rotate, then it must be replaced with the nozzle.

Replacing a DVD drive on video

passive dvd drive

We change the pass and collect everything back. The video below shows the detailed replacement of the drive drive's drive. In the DVD player we work the same way.

Cleaning, lubrication, replacement of the belt

If the player does not see the USB flash drive

Most flash drives originally have the format of NTFS. You need to insert the USB flash drive into the computer, copy the necessary information to the hDD, right-click on the flash drive and select "Format". Next, choose the format FAT 32, agree that all data will be lost and click ok. If the DVD still does not see the USB flash drive, then the problem is in the electronics: the chips may be damaged or the power supply in the wires or trains is broken. It is worth turning to professionals.

Can I flash the DVD player

Upgrading the device will not save you any problems. Firmware can russify player. It will produce larger movies, fix errors in reading the supported formats. But the player will not be able to read formats that were not previously supported. Therefore, if the device works without lags, do not update it.

In order to find out whether it is possible to flash your DVD player, you need to carefully read the model of the device on the back cover. Go to the official website of the manufacturer and see the firmware for this model. If they exist, then download latest version  on a computer, write it to a CD. Run the disc in the player. When the update is complete, the initial screen saver appears on the TV or player, and the disc tray automatically ejects.

Complicated breakdowns

In addition to the problems that can be remedied by any user who can work with a screwdriver and pliers, there are no less common, but more complex problems:

  • the backlight does not work;
  • distortion of sound;
  • there is no picture or sound;
  • no picture or sound;
  • the "karaoke" mode does not work;
  • there is no color image;
  • complex mechanical damage, including water ingress;
  • power supply controller failure;
  • failure of microcircuits.

There are many manufacturers of DVD players. The principle of operation and the basic elements of the devices are the same. Therefore, the repair of players from different manufacturers is similar. If you have a desire to try to repair the player, dare. Perhaps you will succeed, and you will be able to help your friends some other time. And, maybe you will like it so much that you will be engaged in radio engineering and open your business.
