Before we tell you how to make a potion, let's figure out what it is and why it is needed in Minecraft at all. We will also tell you how to find the necessary ingredients for their preparation and how to mix ready-made potions with powders to enhance the effect.
What are potions?
In the game, they are self-cooking objects that have various temporary effects on the player they are applied to. By mixing different ingredients with water, many types of potions can be created that can harm, heal, or buff the player or opponents.
A potion can only have one effect at a time: for example, it cannot heal the player and increase their running speed at the same time. To get both, you need to alternately drink two different potions: healing and swiftness.
Since the change in Minecraft 1.9 Beta Prerelease 2, there are a number of potions that are not used, they cannot be cooked. But they can be obtained using the "/give" command, they are not found in the game in other ways. Many of them are simple potions no longer used, such as cleansing or strength. Therefore, we will not talk about them in this article.
To create potions, you need to place the required ingredients on the brewing stand. We will talk about how to craft a rack below.
How to make a potion in Minecraft
They are obtained by boiling with water and various ingredients, offering a variety of effects. There is one basic and twelve basic. You can improve their duration, effectiveness and area of effect.
1. Create a hob
The brewing stand is needed to create all types of potions in Minecraft. To create it, follow these steps:
- Right click on the workbench;
- Fill the bottom row with cobblestones;
- Place one fire rod in the middle.
To craft a brewing stand, all you need is one fire rod and three cobblestones.
Cobblestones can be easily found when mining underground. Fire Rods can only be found in the Nether when killing Ifrit, a hostile mob attacking with fireballs.
This is Ifrit, his breathing can be heard from afar. Ifrits usually dwell in the fortresses of the Nether.
To enter the Nether, you need an appropriate portal.
To create it, you need to create a frame of obsidian blocks (4×5) and set it on fire with a steel.

It is worth saying that for boiling you can use a cauldron, which is crafted from seven iron ingots. But due to the inconvenience of use, he gave way to the hob.
The cauldron did not take root in the game due to inconvenience. The developers promise to come up with a different application for it in the future.
Right-clicking a rack opens four slots:
The bottom three slots are for vials or potions, and the top one is for an ingredient.
This single ingredient is poured into the three vials at the bottom, allowing you to create three bottles of the potion from the same ingredient. To use the brewing stand, the vials must always be filled with water or a potion; if they are empty, nothing will happen. The water bottle is blue, as in the picture above, the empty bottle is transparent, as in the picture below:
To craft a bubble, you need three glass blocks. They will make three bubbles.
3. Brew an awkward potion
Awkward is the base ingredient for most other Minecraft potions. It can be made on a brewing stand using a vial of water and infernal growth seeds.
These seeds are found in the Nether, where they grow in blocks of soul sand.
Infernal outgrowth is generated in the fortresses of the Nether in places specially designated for them (reminiscent of beds), as well as in chests.
If the player takes the block of soul sand and the seeds of the infernal growth through the Nether portal to the top, then they can begin to grow the growth themselves for the production of potions. The growth grows in any biome, as long as the soil is soul sand.
The awkward potion is prepared as follows:
- Right-click on the brewing stand;
- Place the Nether Growth Seeds in the top slot;
- Place the WATER VIAL on the bottom row.
By placing one Hell Growth Seed and three Water Vials, you will get three Awkward.
The brewing stand will take approximately 19 seconds to create a potion after placing the ingredient and vials in it.
Accordingly, one hellish growth seed is needed to create three basic potions. Awkward itself has no properties and is only used to make other potions.
4. Combine base potion with ingredients
After creating a few bubbles of awkward, you can start creating basic potions that will have various effects, such as increasing strength, health, underwater vision, or even invisibility. They will require a variety of ingredients besides hell growth seeds, such as fire powder, lava cream, and ghast tears.
It will take a lot of travel to collect the right ingredients. The table below describes the main potions and their ingredients.

As you can see, awkward is the base of most basic potions.
They can increase the damage dealt to enemies. Certain potions are suitable for certain situations, for example, fire resistance helps in fighting mobs like Ifrits in the Nether. In a multiplayer game, invisibility is a great way to sneak past enemies. The ability to create potions is a very useful skill in Minecraft.
Combining potions with powders
Many potions can be enhanced by making them more effective and increasing their duration. Combining with powders allows you to, for example, increase the duration of the regeneration effect or turn the slowness potion into an explosive one, increasing the number of targets hit.
Powders are the mashed residues of solid materials. To enhance primary potions, you need red dust, light dust and gunpowder.
Strengthening and Ingredients
Preparing basic potions with these three powders increases their effect.
Like many ingredients, Light Dust is found in the Nether. You'll have to find a Glowing Stone that looks like a block with yellow flecks.
Very often, these blocks are located on the ceiling of deep caves, which complicates their extraction. They turn into light dust already at the workbench.
Red dust is mined underground from red ore.
Red ore can be smelted, but laying it on the ground and using an iron pick will yield up to five redstone.
Gunpowder cannot be mined: it can be obtained by killing creepers (the chance of gunpowder falling out of them is 66%), witches (16% in total) and ghasts (also 66%), and also found in dungeon chests (the chance of gunpowder falling out is completely random, but this is the most safe way). It is best to hunt ghasts, as they still drop "ghast tears" used in potion brewing.
Ghast hunting is the most efficient way to get gunpowder, but also the most dangerous. And the sounds made by the gast cannot be expressed in words at all ...

The recipes for making potions in different versions of Minecraft are slightly different. Above, we described the main points of their creation and what is needed for this. To list all existing recipes within the framework of this article is simply unrealistic. Moreover, with the release of new versions of the game, recipes may change and be supplemented with new ingredients. Potions help in difficult moments of the game in Minecraft, especially in boss battles and on multiplayer maps. The secret lava hideout can only be accessed with fire resistance, or you can install an atomizer that will throw a poison potion at anyone who steps on the pressure plate. As you can see, the thing is very useful, but it requires a trip to the Lower World.
And remember, you don't have to wait for the potion to wear off. Potion effects can be removed by drinking a bucket of milk.
Although the official release of minecraft containing alchemy has not yet been released, I think it will not be long in coming and decided to write an alchemy guide based on the prerelease. The ability to create potions using brewing racks was added in Prerelease 3, and in Prerelease 4 you can not only brew regular potions, but weapon potions as well. You throw a vial of acid at an unsuspecting pig, and that's it - collect loot. But that's later, and now let's talk about how all the same to brew your first potion.

When the cooking process is over, we get a potion of clumsiness at the exit. Let's add sugar to the top slot, since we want a potion of speed, and it is sugar that gives this effect.
If you did everything right, you should have a potion of speed. If you like, you can add Light Dust to it to increase the haste (but decrease the duration), Redstone to increase the duration (but reduce the acceleration), or Fermented Spider Eye to get a slow potion (you can add more gunpowder to it and throw it at someone ).

Here are potions for all kinds of operations with your health. A regular heart in the "Duration" row means that health will be restored all this time. Elixirs can now be crafted to temporarily boost stats or restore health. When creating potions in the game, trophies from most monsters are used (previously these items were not needed, but were still present in the world). For example, the spider eye, which was added in version 1.9, can be used to create an elixir that allows you to breathe underwater. In addition to items dropped by monsters, making potions will require water, sugar, and probably a glass vessel. Most of the ingredients can be obtained in the Nether: tears fall from ghasts, and fire rods from ifrits, from which you can get two portions of fire powder.
Potions are divided not only by type, but also by quality. From the names of the elixir, you can understand what kind of effect it has. In total, there are about 400 recipes in the game (perhaps much more). Elixirs can be crafted using the cauldron and tripod, which will be introduced in the completed version 1.9.

Elixirs of positive action
From the tears of the Ghasts, the player will be able to get a first-level health elixir, which will instantly restore some of the character's health. For the second level potion, you need to mix sugar, infernal wart and a ball of mucus. Elixir of health of the third level can be obtained from all of the above components, but in addition to the ball of mucus, fire powder should be used.
In order to swim freely in lava, you can create a fire resistance potion. For three minutes, the player cannot be set on fire by anything. The duration of action may vary depending on the ingredients used. To create such a potion, you will need magma slime, which, possibly, will fall out of magma cubes (analogues of slugs, but in the Lower World).
Potions recipes can be crossed, experimenting with getting a high quality elixir that gives several boosts at once. So, if you mix magma slime and a gast tear, you can get an elixir that gives resistance to fire and restores most of your health. If, say, sugar increases speed for a while, then by crossing it with a gast tear, you can get a healing potion of speed.
To swim in lava with impunity for about three minutes, you can mix spider eye, water and magma slime. The character will receive not only resistance to fire, but also the ability to breathe underwater.
Elixirs of Impact
The use of some elixirs can lead to unpleasant consequences. For example, if you mix sugar, water, a fermented spider's eye and an infernal wart, then the speed will increase, health will increase, and fire resistance will improve. A side effect of such a potion is hunger, which will end in only a minute and a half.
Elixirs of influence can inflict instant damage to the player, slow him down for a while, and can even poison him. Now players will be able to build their laboratories and conduct experiments there, mixing the right ingredients in different proportions to improve the effect of the elixir.
If you drink milk, then there will be no effect from the potion (if you try to get under the effect of the potion).

The walls of castles, roads, buildings in villages - all this consists of cobblestone, and it will not be difficult to get it. To do this, you only need a pickaxe of any quality. Without it (by digging with your hands) you won't be able to get even a piece of the block.
In addition, if you prefer to dig caves rather than walk in nature, you can find cobblestone in the lower levels and in hell. This material is formed when lava comes into contact with flowing water, so, in a pinch, you can make yourself some consumables yourself.
Kernel
The next item you need to get before crafting a potion maker in Minecraft is the ifrit core. As you guessed, to get it you will have to defeat the monster of the same name. Unfortunately, there is no other way to get this material.
