Design and ergonomics
The achievements of the previous generation S2 in the new model were embodied in a more aggressive appearance. The round case of the Frontier added a little in diameter and got a grooved edging. The body of the device is predominantly made of 316L steel with a matte finish. Only the back cover with sensors is made of glass. Frontier looks chunky and may not fit the tight sleeves of some shirts. For such cases, it is recommended to take a closer look at the Classic model. It is lighter and smaller than the older version. 
Samsung does not hide the fact that when developing the appearance of the S3, they focused on the elite TAG Heuer Connected watch. There are no “blind spots” with plastic inserts on the touch screen of the device, the displayed information occupies 100% of the allotted area. In addition to the bezel, you can navigate the menu with two buttons on the right side of the case. 
On the left, there are three small holes for the earpiece. The Frontier does a great job with the wireless headset function. The watch allows you to talk safely while driving without being distracted from the road. 
Despite the sporty orientation of the model, it is quite problematic to use the S3 in training. The device is too bulky and constrains sudden movements of the wrist. In addition, the heart rate sensor does not always read the body's indicators correctly.
Display
S3 Frontier displays information on an AMOLED matrix with a resolution of 360 * 360 pixels. Considering the small diagonal (1.3-inches), the pixel density still falls short of the level of modern smartphones - 278 dpi allows you to distinguish individual points on the screen, but the screen quality in general can be called high. On top of the matrix is \u200b\u200bCorning Gorilla Glass SR + protective glass with a good oleophobic coating. 
The clock display is paired with a light sensor. The brightness change is smooth and correct. S3 can also show basic data with minimal power consumption in AlwaysOn Display mode. A similar feature is found in the flagship Galaxy S7 smartphones. 
The picture on the screen is perfectly visible from almost any angle. It's easy to see your current heart rate or steps taken while running. The disadvantages include the excessive sensitivity of the orientation sensor. You have to constantly turn the watch away from you so that the display does not light up again. The situation is aggravated by the heavy case, which, with a not too tight strap, constantly strives to slide down. 
Frontier is able to determine if the functionality of the device is currently being used. If the S3 is just lying on the table, the power saving mode is activated. To bring the device back to life, you just need to put the strap on your hand. In this case, the screen backlight needs to wait five seconds. Small, but still a flaw that should be fixed with subsequent OS updates.
Interface
Like most other miniature devices from Samsung, the S3 Frontier runs the Tizen OS. Specifically in this model, the Tizen 2.3.2 system is preinstalled. 
The principle of clock control has practically not changed since the time of the previous model. As before, you can use more than just the display for navigation. The ribbed navigation ring around the screen does an excellent job of flipping through menus, making the S3 easy to operate, even with gloves on. 
Two mechanical buttons on the side of the case are responsible for going back, going to the main screen and turning off the device. In normal mode, the watch always displays the dial. Rotating the bezel to the left opens the alerts, to the right - the widget menu. A light swipe from top to bottom displays the options and the current state of the Frontier. 
Initially, the user has 14 preinstalled dials. The assortment is expanding almost to limitlessness thanks to new additions from the Galaxy Apps store. The whole interface is built on the principle of Circle UI, icons are placed in a circle and take up the maximum amount of free space.
Compatibility
Frontier was created for maximum audience coverage, right after the release of the watch, the developers implemented the ability to synchronize them with iOS devices. Samsung smartphones paired with S3 work perfectly. The flagships Galaxy S7 and S8 already have a pre-installed watch sync app. But owners of other Android devices will have to tinker a bit. 
First you have to download Samsung Gear, Gear S Plugin and Samsung Accessory Service. Then you need to register your Samsung Account. It will be used for the correct operation of the S Health health tracker. On the iPhone, the process is a little simplified, you only need to install the first application from the list.

The Frontier hardware platform is represented by a 14nm Exynos 7270 processor with a maximum clock speed of 1 GHz, 768 MB of RAM and four gigabytes of internal memory. Compared to the previous generation, there is a noticeable increase in performance even when flipping through the interface. All menus open without delays or sagging. 
You can respond to incoming messages with a pre-prepared phrase, text or emoticon. The preinstalled apps include Calendar, S Voice, S Health, player and phone. The Samsung Apps store is constantly updated with new programs, so there should be no problems updating the software. 
Internal service S Health has expanded its capabilities. Now there is a fitness and sports regime. The first one reads information about the steps taken, heart rate, fluid intake and the number of hours of sleep. Based on this data, the application builds interactive activity graphs. If a person sits for more than an hour in one place, the clock begins to vibrate, warning of the need for a walk. 
Sports mode tracks your running, squatting, jumping, and a variety of other exercises. At the same time, the pulse, the speed of movement, as well as the distance traveled are monitored. You can select the number of calories to burn, then the Frontier will inform you about the desired pace of activities. The built-in altimeter gives an indication of the change in altitude.
Autonomy
The built-in 380mAh battery allows you to use the watch for about 3-4 days normally without hard training. Active sports with GPS tracking will drain your battery in two days. You need more autonomy - look for budget ones.

Appearance
Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is a sporty version of the current line of smartwatches from the Korean brand, which is massive and good-looking. The controls are familiar from Gear S2: a rotating bezel around the display and two keys. The latter are embossed, the buttons themselves are large, with a moderately tight and clear stroke. The bezel is matte, covered with markings, and there are serifs on the ends.
The upper part of the device made of stainless steel resembles gloss in its properties: it quickly becomes covered with prints and, if not thoroughly wiped, retains streaks. It will be possible to notice this only upon a closer examination of the case from a few centimeters, in all other cases this feature is successfully hidden by the dark color of the metal. The lower half of the case, which fits to the hand, consists of a plastic mold and a glass (or very similar to glass) lid, under which the heart rate sensor is hidden.
The device is large and weighty (62 g without a strap), which will not allow people with a thin brush to wear it, and the thickness is impressive. Samsung Gear S3 Frontier cannot be called "boilers", rather it is the average size, familiar from the mass segment of wristwatches. Separately, I am glad that the gadget matches its analog counterparts not only in size, but also in appearance.
The design of the first mass-produced smartwatches could hardly be called exquisite, and it was a stretch to watch them. Over the past three years, the market situation has not changed much, but Gear S3, unlike most competitors, can hardly be called a wearable computer when you see them on your hand - it’s not even immediately possible to understand that the device is smart and not ordinary mechanics.
Additionally, I am glad that the smart watch received not only IP68 water and dust protection, but also fit the MIL-810G standard, that is, it can withstand drops from a low altitude (not particularly important for watches), is not afraid of sudden temperature changes (relevant in winter) and survive light blows. The latter is critically important for watches that constantly encounter door frames, the table surface, or an unsuccessfully open door. The standard also implies resistance to sunlight, shock and vibration - typical hazards that any watch faces.
Convenience and straps
The convenience of interacting with the interface in Gear S3 remains the best on the market, since rotating the bezel saves you from three problems at once: the screen does not get dirty, you don’t need to take off your gloves, your fingers do not overlap the interface when interacting with the device (it touches the display in some situations, but it is rather exception than the rule).
The control has become tighter than it was in the Gear S2, besides, it scrolls well only if you cling to it from the side, to the notches, you simply cannot move your finger along the rim from above. This is both an advantage and a disadvantage: for the entire time of testing, there has never been a false interaction with the interface when rubbing against clothes or other objects, but scrolling through long lists (for example, the application menu) requires several actions, since in fact you only interact with the third rim ... The last inconvenience is minor, and it is present only now, while the jacket is an obligatory part of the wardrobe: in the fall or summer it will disappear.
The main achievement of the Gear S3 Frontier in comparison with the Gear S2 is the abandonment of the proprietary strap attachment and the transition to a standard 22mm solution: from now on, the user can buy a new version at almost any watch store. Yes, it will not be embossed with the Gear S3 on the inside, but the choice is not limited to the options that Samsung itself or several third-party companies will offer, which will risk mastering the mount for one or two models on the market.
The Gear S3's everyday usability has also improved over the previous generation thanks to its larger screen.
Display
Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is equipped with a 1.3-inch display with a resolution of 360 dots in diameter. The pixel density has dropped slightly compared to the Gear S2 due to the larger diagonal, but strong pixelation is not visible on the screen, but larger elements are easier to see without lifting the wrist to the nose, and now, in the rare cases when you need to touch the display, your finger does not close all space.
Other characteristics of the screen, traditionally for Samsung flagship devices, are at their best: the maximum brightness is so strong that even the brightest sun does not disturb the picture, the richness of colors and contrast are high. Black is the main color of the background of all programs, which not only consumes less energy due to the AMOLED display, but also has a positive effect on readability.
Best of all, the Gear S3 has an Always On Display. Another advantage of analog clocks has disappeared. And this is not just a pale display of time, but pretty slightly simplified versions of the main dials.
Always On Display
The brightness is reduced in this mode, but it is still enough to accurately see the time. The downside is that even the lowered brightness is clearly visible at night, which makes it difficult to sleep in the watch, which automatically tracks the user's sleep.
Functionality
The capabilities of the Samsung Gear S3 are largely the same. That being said, there are a number of innovations that have made the Gear S3 better than its predecessor.
Improvements
The sports component has developed, which is in line with the trends of the smartwatch market. The device received an altimeter that allows you to measure the number of floors climbed: additional activity in S Health, another tool to reward the user for movement.
Sensitivity has increased significantly - sensors almost perfectly detect the moments when the user changes the type of activity. So, the device automatically found out the exact time of fast walking - the duration of this activity was manually tracked on the Apple Watch, and the Gear S3 Frontier was simply on the hand. When the activity stopped, the Samsung device reported that the duration of the "workout" was 10 minutes 7 seconds, while in fact it lasted 10 minutes 18 seconds.
The highest accuracy is observed with all types of activity, and automatic detection paired with the reliability of the data gives very detailed and correct information in the S Health statistics
Engineers have added a speaker to the watch, that is, now the user can make calls and answer incoming calls. Useful for answering in situations when it is inconvenient to pick up the phone: when you are walking out of the store and your hands are busy, when you cannot find your smartphone, when your hands are dirty (for example, while cooking). You won't be able to have a full conversation, but quickly saying where you are or how long it takes to get to the meeting point is great.
Voice input
The voice input function remains the most convenient way to interact with the watch (at this stage of development) to perform complex scenarios that cannot be described with buttons. These include creating notes, setting up reminders, entering an address, and searching through large lists such as contacts.
Voice recognition has improved, with the Gear S2 frustrating when dictating sentences longer than three words, but the Tizen update has significantly improved the situation over the past generation. The novelty, however, works even more accurately - now you can fully respond to a message right from the clock. Other voice-based functions work well too, except that the assistant's speech is still too robotic.
The system also received reminders that can be set by voice. The implementation is still lame: the device cannot understand both the task text and the deadline in one request. For example, "Remind me to eat in 40 minutes" starts the task creation, after which the clock asks what the user wants to name the task.
There is also a bad scenario - the watch completely ignores "10 minutes" (and "one and a half hours") in the voice request, which is why when the phrase "remind me to turn off the gas in 10 minutes" creates a reminder with the text "turn off the gas in 10 minutes" and put it one hour after the creation of the task. Then it becomes more fun - when the user says that the task was saved incorrectly, the clock prompts you to say "change" or "cancel" in order to perform the appropriate action. With the phrase “cancel”, the device repeats the same question and will do this until the owner says “cancel cancel” (yes, it will repeat the same thing twice).
Sometimes a voice request using a similar pattern sets an alarm - in this case, the Gear S3 manages to understand both the task time and the name in one command. It is not clear, however, why the same command calls different functions.
Third party apps and store
The number of software for Tizen smart watches continues to grow, but the pace is still not encouraging: many popular programs never came to the platform, but the Android functionality allows the watch to respond to notifications without software companions, except that you can view the sent picture or sticker. But what there is really a lot on the Gear S3 is the dials, fans of self-expression will love.

Yes, Samsung still has significantly fewer programs, but at least some process is underway. Samsung Gear S3, like an analog watch, copes with most tasks: it always displays the time, supports standard straps and looks presentable. Autonomy is still not given to smartwatches on a par with traditional devices, but such is the price for a bunch of additional features.
The device perfectly performs two main tasks of any smartwatch: it counts physical activity and shows notifications, some of which can be answered (if using an Android smartphone) directly from the Gear S3. The lack of messengers on Tizen is frustrating, because it is from them that the bulk of notifications come, but the standard implementation displays text, and stickers and other additional content rather interfere with quick communication (or require a thoughtful answer, that is, it is still more convenient to get a smartphone).
The software from the store is not happy with the assortment, but all the main programs are there: world clock, timers, programs for ordering a taxi and other usefulness, the functionality of which can be performed with one or two touches
Controlling the interface using the bezel remains the most convenient implementation, since the screen gets much less dirty, and there is no need to take off your gloves in cool weather. The best part is that this method of interaction does not require getting used to: it is logical and simple thanks to the originally built logic for a round screen.
Autonomy
Samsung Gear S3 Frontier received a 380 mAh battery, which in a loaded mode of use with an active Always On Display provides 42-43 hours of autonomy. For example, almost as many live, but without a constantly active display. If you turn off the main feature of the Gear S3, then the autonomy increases to 65-70 hours, but this is the case when it is worth sacrificing autonomy for the sake of functionality.
The watch is inductively charged from the docking station, and the full energy recovery process takes just over two hours. Externally, the memory completely repeats that of the previous generation, only a little larger in size (which is expected due to the larger screen diagonal). Docks of both generations fit both new and old watches.
Competitors
The main competitor to the Gear S3 Frontier is the Samsung Gear S2: the earlier model almost completely repeats the functionality of the Gear S3, while being suitable for more people due to its compactness. In addition, their cost is lower than the novelty - 6999 UAH. They don't look so cool, you won't be able to make a call, the straps have a proprietary mount, and the autonomy of the device is worse, but the main features (notifications, Always On Display) work perfectly.
LG Watch Sport and Huawei Watch are also competitors. The first watch is notable for the development in a pair with Google and the use of Android Wear 2.0, but there are problems: they cost $ 349 in the United States excluding taxes, and are also absent in domestic retail. Huawei Watch is still available in official stores, its cost is 8500-9000 UAH. This watch will receive Android Wear 2.0 soon. The ring around the Gear S3 Frontier's screen scrolls to the right or left, and lets you flip through screens, lists or icons in the interface.
In addition, on the right side of the watch case there are two mechanical buttons, one is responsible for a step back, and the second is for going to the main screen, calling the main menu, as well as turning the device on and off. You can also control the watch through a touchscreen display, but the navigation ring is just more comfortable to use in many cases.
The Gear S3 Frontier's interface is built around a circular screen, so its elements are positioned to make the most of the usable space. Dealing with the interface logic is not difficult.
