Alcatel one touch 6012x official. Review and testing of the smartphone ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI. Ergonomics of functional elements

TFT IPS- High-quality liquid crystal matrix. It has wide viewing angles, one of the best indicators of color reproduction quality and contrast among all those used in the production of displays for portable equipment.
Super AMOLED- if a conventional AMOLED screen uses several layers, between which there is an air gap, then in Super AMOLED there is only one such touch layer without air gaps. This allows you to achieve greater screen brightness with the same power consumption.
Super AMOLED HD- differs from Super AMOLED in a higher resolution, thanks to which it is possible to achieve 1280x720 pixels on a mobile phone screen.
Super AMOLED plus- this is a new generation of Super AMOLED displays, differs from the previous one by using more sub-pixels in a conventional RGB matrix. The new displays are 18% thinner and 18% brighter than the older PenTile displays.
AMOLED- an improved version of OLED technology. The main advantages of the technology are significantly reduced power consumption, the ability to display a large color gamut, a smaller thickness and the ability of the display to bend a little without the risk of breaking.
retina- display with a high pixel density, designed specifically for Apple technology. The pixel density on Retina displays is such that individual pixels are indistinguishable to the eye at a normal distance from the screen. This provides the highest image detail and greatly improves the overall viewing experience.
Super Retina HD- The display is made using OLED technology. The pixel density is 458 PPI, the contrast ratio reaches 1,000,000:1. The display has an extended color gamut and unrivaled color accuracy. Pixels in the corners of the display are anti-aliased at the sub-pixel level, so borders don't distort and look smooth. Super Retina HD reinforcement layer is 50% thicker. Breaking the screen will be harder.
Super LCD is the next generation of LCD technology and features improved features compared to earlier LCD displays. Screens have not only wide viewing angles and better color reproduction, but also reduced power consumption.
TFT- A common type of liquid crystal displays. With the help of an active matrix, controlled by thin-film transistors, it is possible to significantly increase the speed of the display, as well as the contrast and clarity of the image.
OLED- organic electroluminescent display. Consists of a special thin-film polymer that emits light under the influence of an electric field. This type of display has a large margin of brightness and consumes very little power.

Inexpensive model with support for 4G networks

When mentioning the Chinese company TCL and its trademark Alcatel, this year we first of all recalled the very conspicuous top model of the TCL Idol X + smartphone, which is based on the latest Mediatek platform with a maximum frequency of eight processor cores. However, the company in the new season, of course, did not limit itself to the release of one flagship model: at the beginning of the year, during the MWC 2014 exhibition in Barcelona, TCL introduced a whole line of new mid-range smartphones, including the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 and OneTouch Idol 2S and their various modifications. In accordance with the tradition that originated in the mobile market, the company could not help but release a version of the smartphone with the word "mini" in the title.

Such a device for the company was a reduced-sized smartphone from the above-mentioned line, which received a rather long and inconvenient name for pronunciation: Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 mini S. This small-sized smartphone is not a top-end device in terms of characteristics - it also belongs to the average price level, as well as its "full-size" brothers in the line mentioned above. The domestic operator Beeline, for example, presented Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 mini S to the market a few days ago as an exclusive offer: the smartphone itself is offered in the operator’s salons at a “tasty” price of 7990 rubles, and in addition to it, three months of free mobile Internet are given. True, in this case, the buyer will have to sacrifice something: the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 mini S model bought in Beeline stores is “locked” to work only with SIM cards of this operator and will not fully function with any other cards. In addition, the phone is crammed to the top with additional proprietary Beeline applications, as is usually the case, but this issue, just, is completely solved by standard methods. But to make such a device work with SIM-cards of other operators, you will have to find unconventional means - if someone is interested in this option at all. Be that as it may, it is the modification of the smartphone offered by Beeline (6036Y) that is the maximum and best configuration of this model - it even has support for LTE networks, which, at such a low price, makes Idol 2 mini S one of the most inexpensive devices with 4G on the market. our market. In any case, the described smartphone seemed to us a device quite interesting and worthy of making a full review on it.

Contents of delivery

In our case, we received a test copy of Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 mini S without packaging and, accordingly, a set of accessories, so we can judge the richness of the smartphone package only by the description on the company's website. It states that in the box with a smartphone you can find a universal compact charger, a Micro-USB connecting cable, an in-ear headset and a user manual.

Of the additional accessories purchased separately, you can note a book case with a kind of built-in event indicator, made in the form of perforated illuminated icons - it looks nice and probably not too energy-consuming. Without opening the cover, the user can receive information about incoming SMS messages, mail, incoming calls, etc.

Appearance and usability

The design and shape of the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 mini S smartphone resembles previous products in the Idol series, most of all it is similar to the first flagship Idol X, which users liked so much at one time. To a lesser extent, it is similar to the updated Idol X +, although common features in the design can be traced here.

The smartphone received a rather small size, elegant and thin body, which fits perfectly into the average hand. The device has rather slippery glossy side faces, however, due to the matte non-slip back surface, as well as small dimensions and weight, the smartphone is comfortably held in the palm of your hand. In terms of size, the device is slightly larger than the Apple iPhone - it is more similar to another compact modern model, the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact.

The entire body of Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 mini S is entirely made of plastic, there is no metal here. The case has a monoblock structure, the back cover has a slight bend and a matte non-staining surface, which favorably affects both ergonomics and a neat overall appearance of the device. The side faces are made in the form of chrome-plated metal, but this is not real metal, but just sprayed onto the same plastic. The edges of the body practically do not have bevels, they are quite wide and slippery to the touch.

The corresponding method of installing a SIM card follows from such a structure of the case: the card, just like in previous models of the Idol series, is inserted into the side slot, which is covered from above by an unusual cover. This cover does not need to be removed with a special needle-clip, it opens in the manner of a hinged door. To open it, you need to press one end of the cover, push it inward. In principle, this method of opening was quite convenient for full-sized representatives of the Idol series, however, in the reduced model, all these elements also turned out to be reduced in size, which made it not very convenient to manipulate these miniature caps. In this case, you have to use something sharp to push one of the ends of the lid. You also have to act with the card itself - the usual length of the nail is not enough to drown the SIM card to the depth necessary for capture.

The adjacent slot for installing a memory card has exactly the same structure - microSD cards up to 32 GB are supported. Both covers have short leashes, they can be pulled out quite a bit so that they do not interfere with the installation of cards. In general, the whole process is quite uncomfortable, the way to install cards in Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 mini S is far from the most convenient.

On the back side of the smartphone, all the elements are familiar and arranged in the traditional order: on top - the eyes of the camera and LED flash, on the bottom - a series of holes for sound output from the ringing speaker.

The speaker grill is covered by the table surface, from which the sound of the lying smartphone is somewhat muffled. The single section LED flash comes pre-installed with software to control it as a flashlight.

On the front surface, almost the entire front panel is covered with a flat protective glass without sides, a hole is cut out in it for a large shiny chrome-plated ear speaker grille, the eyes of the front camera and sensors are visible nearby.

Below the screen, there is space for hardware buttons for controlling the system and applications. These buttons are touch-sensitive, have a whitish backlight of medium brightness, for which there was no item in the menu to adjust.

There are only two mechanical hardware keys on the sides of the device, and both of them are located on the same right side, one next to the other. The volume and lock keys have a fairly short travel, small size and protrude quite a bit outside the case. In general, the implementation of controls is not the best, but you can get used to it.

The Micro-USB connector is placed here at the bottom end - next to the microphone hole. The headphone output is implemented at the top end, you can see the hole of the second auxiliary microphone nearby.

The smartphone connectors are not covered by any plugs and covers, because the device is not protected from water and dust. There was no hook for attaching the strap on the case.

The product traditionally goes on sale in several color options at once: there are options for light gray and dark gray shades, as well as options for pink and chocolate. In different versions, the front panel under the glass of the smartphone also turns out to be of different colors: for example, it is black for the chocolate version, and white for the rest.

Screen

Smartphone Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 mini S is equipped with an IPS touch matrix. The physical dimensions of the display are 56 × 99 mm, the diagonal is 4.5 inches. The screen resolution in pixels is 960 × 540, the density of dots per inch reaches a value of 245 ppi.

The brightness of the display has both manual and automatic adjustment, the latter based on the operation of the light sensor. The smartphone also has a proximity sensor that blocks the screen when you bring the smartphone to your ear. Multi-touch technology allows you to handle 5 simultaneous touches.

A detailed examination using measuring instruments was carried out by the editor of the sections "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" Alexey Kudryavtsev. Here is his expert opinion on the screen of the test sample.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are no worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the off screens (on the left - Nexus 7, on the right - Alcatel Idol 2 Mini S, then they can be distinguished by size):

The screen of Alcatel Idol 2 Mini S is even a little darker (brightness in photos is 84 versus 92 for Nexus 7). The ghosting of reflected objects in the Alcatel Idol 2 Mini S screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the screen layers (more specifically, between the outer glass and the LCD matrix surface) (OGS type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of borders (glass-air type) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of strong external illumination, but their repair in case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (very effective, similar to the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much easier and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control and with a white field displayed in full screen, the maximum brightness value was about 500 cd/m², the minimum was 42 cd/m². The maximum brightness is very high, and given the excellent anti-reflective properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors will be at a high level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by light sensor (located in the upper left corner on the front panel). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. In complete darkness, auto mode reduces the brightness to 42 cd/m² (acceptable), in an artificially lit office environment (approx. on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) - rises to the same 500 cd / m². As a result, the auto-brightness function does not work adequately to external conditions, and the whole thing is in the software implementation, since the light sensor itself shows quite plausible results. At any brightness level, there is virtually no backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker.

This smartphone uses an IPS type matrix. Micrographs show a typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even at large deviations of the view from the perpendicular to the screen and without inverting (except for the very darkest when looking to the right) shades. For comparison, here are photographs in which the same images are displayed on the screens of Alcatel Idol 2 Mini S and Nexus 7, while the brightness of the screens is initially set to about 200 cd / m² (on a white field in full screen), and the color balance on the camera is forcibly switched to 6500 K. White field perpendicular to the screens:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field. And a test picture:

Color reproduction is good and colors are saturated on both screens. Now at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the image quality at this angle on the screen of Alcatel Idol 2 Mini S has noticeably deteriorated. And the white box:

The brightness at an angle of the screens has decreased (at least 6 times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but the Alcatel Idol 2 Mini S screen is noticeably darker. The black field, when deviated diagonally, is highlighted to an average degree and acquires a purple hue. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is approximately the same!):

And from another angle:

With a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the black field is average, since there are areas with increased black brightness along the edge of the screen:

Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is not the highest - about 680:1. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 24 ms (13 ms on + 11 ms off). The transition between 25% and 75% grayscale (according to the numerical value of the color) and back takes a total of 38.5 ms. The gamma curve constructed from 32 points with an equal interval according to the numerical value of the shade of gray did not reveal a blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 1.86, which is below the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve strongly deviates from the power dependence:

Such a deviation is usually a sign of the presence of a dynamic adjustment of the brightness of the backlight in accordance with the nature of the displayed image (since the measurements were carried out with sequential output of shades of gray almost on the entire screen), but we did not receive additional evidence of its existence. But just in case, a number of tests - determining the contrast and response time, comparing black flare at angles - we carried out when displaying special patterns with invariably average brightness, and not monochromatic fields in full screen.

Color gamut close to sRGB:

The spectra show that the matrix filters moderately mix the components to each other:

As a result, visually the colors have a natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale does not cause much enthusiasm, since the color temperature is noticeably higher than the standard 6500 K, the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered a good indicator for a consumer device, however, ΔE varies significantly from shade to shade - this negatively affects the visual assessment of color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance does not matter much there, and the measurement error of color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

To summarize: the screen has a high maximum brightness and has good anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without any problems even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. The mode with automatic brightness adjustment is practically useless, since already in a lit room it increases the brightness to the maximum, which, of course, leads to unjustified energy consumption. The significant advantages of the screen include an effective oleophobic coating, the absence of an air gap in the layers of the screen and flicker, as well as the sRGB color gamut. The rest of the characteristics are not outstanding, but not a failure either. In general, taking into account the importance of the characteristics for this particular class of devices, the screen quality can be considered high.

Sound

In terms of sound, the smartphone is nothing special. Both speakers emit a fairly clear, but without a noticeable presence of low frequencies, the sound, moreover, not loud enough. However, this does not particularly affect the perception of sound during a conversation - the voice of a familiar interlocutor, timbre and intonation remain recognizable. Of the settings - the standard equalizer with preset values and some additional effects.

The device can record a conversation from the line using built-in tools, while both talking parties are recorded, and the recorded files are automatically added to the appropriate folder. Equipped with a smartphone and built-in FM radio, which traditionally works only with headphones connected as an external antenna.

The main, rear camera here has an 8-megapixel module and shoots with a maximum resolution of 3264 × 1836. The quality of the images is average, most often the photos come out overexposed and slightly blurry. The settings are quite clearly placed and conveniently arranged, but the possibilities laid down here are quite modest.

The video camera can shoot at a maximum resolution of 1080p (30 fps), examples of test clips are shown below.

  • Clip #1 (35 MB, 1920x1080, daylight)
  • Video #2 (33 MB, 1920×1080, indoor)
  • Movie #3 (18 MB, 1920×1080, at night)

Sample photos with our comments are presented below.

Long-range sharpness is good.

The camera cannot fully resolve the foliage, but in general it works out well.

Sharpness across the field of the frame is quite uniform.

In the background, the foliage practically does not merge.

The noise in the shadows is not so strong, and, apparently, well processed.

Indoors, the camera behaves relatively well.

Even when shooting at night, the camera shows not such a bad result.

The camera is also good at macro photography.

Before us is exactly what can be safely called a balanced camera. Let's start with the fact that there are simply no significant drawbacks to the camera. With its 8 megapixels, it copes, perhaps not perfectly, but very well. The camera got a good sensor, good optics and moderate software processing. It is all these three parameters in symbiosis that give the camera that very balance. The sensor does a good job in the shadows, so the noise reduction does not need to be processed. The optics work out the image well across the frame and according to the plans, so there is practically no sharpening in the pictures. Oddly enough, the merit of the camera is not limited to this: it works very well in low light. The camera resorts to ISO values above ISO 100 only when absolutely necessary, but even a night shot (ISO 232, 1/17 of a second) shows relatively good performance.

As already mentioned, the camera turned out to be good and balanced and is quite suitable for most scenes.

Telephone part and communications

The smartphone works standardly in modern 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA networks, and there is also support for fourth-generation networks (4G) used in Russia. With the SIM card of the domestic operator Megafon, the smartphone in practice confidently finds and works with the LTE network. The data transfer rate, respectively, in theory can reach up to 150 Mbps of incoming traffic. Of the additional networking features, support is available. The mode of connecting external devices to the USB port (USB Host, OTG), unfortunately, is not supported here, so flash drives connected via an OTG adapter will not be recognized. The navigation module supports both GPS and domestic Glonass and works very clearly and quickly, there are no problems with this.

Spontaneous reboots / shutdowns during testing were not observed, as well as slowdowns or system freezes. The alert LED sensor here modestly shines with a small whitish dot in the upper left corner of the front panel, unobtrusively signaling various incoming events. The light sensor adjusts the brightness level automatically, but it does not do it quite correctly.

Drawing letters and numbers on virtual keyboards is quite small and not very comfortable to control. The layout and layout of the keys is standard: switching languages here is done by pressing a special button with the image of a globe, there is no separate row with numbers - you need to switch the layout every time. The phone application supports Smart Dial, that is, while dialing a phone number, a search is also carried out in contacts.

OS and software

Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 mini S is currently running on the Google Android software platform, not the latest version 4.3. The proprietary shell, stretched over the standard Android interface, here has a rather heavily redesigned and expanded functionality: sections have been added to the settings menu, there are rudiments of gesture support, there is even such an opportunity as unlocking the screen by tapping. In general, everything is very familiar from the previous models of the Idol series. The application menu in this user interface is present, most of the already pre-installed applications are carefully arranged into thematic folders by the developers themselves. On desktops, the creation of folders/groups is supported.

As mentioned above, our test lab was visited by a modification of a smartphone branded specifically for the Beeline operator, with all the ensuing consequences. The smartphone interface has not only special themes with a familiar black and yellow color, but also stuffed with a mass of all kinds of branded applications, which in general are not of particular interest. However, there is no difficulty in restoring the appearance of the interface to its original, more relaxed look. In our case, to test all the capabilities of the device, it was also unlocked, and after that it worked perfectly with SIM cards from other operators, and even registered in LTE networks.

Performance

The hardware platform of Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 mini S is based on a single-chip system (SoC) Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 (MSM8226). The central processor here has 4 ARM Cortex-A7 cores operating at a frequency of 1.2 GHz, although the maximum possible frequency is up to 1.6 GHz (SoC production technology is 28 nm). The RAM in the device is 1 GB, and the storage available to the user to download their own files is about 5 GB of the nominally designated 8 GB - the rest went to the system itself and applications. Memory can be expanded with microSD cards up to 32 GB. Unfortunately, it will not work to connect a flash drive via an OTG adapter - the device does not support this mode.

To get an idea of the platform performance of the tested smartphone, let's run a standard set of tests. We already had to test devices based on the MSM8226 SoC: a recent and most recent example is the LG G2 mini model, which is based on exactly the same platform. For comparison, let's take the results of the same platform, but with a slightly faster core frequency (1.4 GHz, Asus Padfone E model), and add the results of another similar platform from Qualcomm - Snapdragon 200, which has exactly the same cores and their number same, but the SoC itself is made using 45 nm technology. This relatively recent budget platform is called the Snapdragon 200 (MSM8212), and we tested it on the Huawei Ascend G6 smartphone, which is currently being advertised on TV with might and main, and a review of which is also being prepared for release.

For convenience, we have summarized all the results obtained by us when testing a smartphone in the latest versions of popular benchmarks in tables. Several other devices from various segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions of benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the obtained dry numbers). Unfortunately, within the framework of one comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions of benchmarks, so many worthy and relevant models remain “behind the scenes” due to the fact that they once passed their “obstacle courses” on previous versions of test programs.

According to the test results, it can be seen that the SoC Snapdragon 400 MSM8226, made according to the 28 nm process technology, turned out to be slightly faster in all respects than the SoC Snapdragon 200 MSM8212, manipulating the same cores, but made according to the 45 nm process technology (Huawei G6 platform). The results of the LG G2 mini were identical, which is logical, because they have the same platforms, and the slightly faster Asus Padfone E cores showed a slight superiority, which is also quite logical and in line with our expectations.

In general, according to the results of all tests, the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 mini S smartphone can be safely attributed to the category of devices with average, or even slightly above average performance. At the moment, the hardware performance of this smartphone should be enough to perform most of the tasks that any game or other application from the Google Play Store can deliver.

Test results in MobileXPRT, as well as the latest versions of AnTuTu 4.x and GeekBench 3:

When testing the graphics subsystem in the cross-platform 3DMark test for the most productive smartphones, it is now possible to run 3DMark in Unlimited mode, where the rendering resolution is fixed at 720p and VSync is disabled (which can cause speeds to rise above 60 fps).

Video playback

To test the "omnivorous" when playing video (including support for various codecs, containers and special features, such as subtitles), we used the most common formats, which make up the bulk of the content available on the Web. Note that for mobile devices it is important to have support for hardware video decoding at the chip level, since it is most often impossible to process modern versions using processor cores alone. Also, do not expect everything from a mobile device to decode everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it. All results are summarized in a single table.

According to the test results, Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 mini S was not equipped with all the necessary decoders, in this case, sound decoders, which are necessary for the full playback of most of the most common files on the network. To successfully play them, you will have to resort to the help of a third-party player - for example, MX Player. True, it will also have to first change the settings, switching from hardware decoding to software or to a new mode called Hardware+(not supported by all smartphones), only then will the sound appear. All results are summarized in a single table.

We did not find the MHL interface, as well as Mobility DisplayPort in this smartphone, so we had to limit ourselves to testing the output of video files on the screen of the device itself. To do this, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see “Methodology for testing video signal playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)”). Screenshots with a shutter speed of 1 s helped to determine the nature of the output frames of video files with various parameters: resolution (1280 by 720 (720p) and 1920 by 1080 (1080p) pixels) and frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps) varied. With). In tests, we used the MX Player video player in Hardware+ mode. The test results are summarized in the table:

Good No Good No Good No Good No

Note: If both columns Uniformity and Passes green ratings are set, this means that, most likely, when watching movies, artifacts caused by uneven interleaving and dropping frames will either not be visible at all, or their number and visibility will not affect viewing comfort. Red marks indicate possible problems with the playback of the respective files.

In general, according to the criterion for displaying frames, the quality of playing video files on the screen of the smartphone itself is good, since frames (or groups of frames) can be displayed with more or less uniform alternation of intervals and, with rare exceptions, without frame drops. When playing 720p and 1080p video files with an aspect ratio of 16:9, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly on the border of the screen. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - all gradations of shades are displayed in the shadows and in the highlights.

Battery Life

The capacity of the lithium-ion battery installed in Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 mini S is small for a modern smartphone 2000 mAh. However, according to the results of the tests, the subject did not hit the face in the dirt, demonstrating a very decent battery life in various standard use cases. The device even outperformed most of its direct competitors in this matter, except for the mini-models of Samsung and LG - Korean modern smartphones have recently shown the best optimization indicators in terms of energy consumption.

Continuous reading in the FBReader program (with a standard, light theme) at the minimum comfortable brightness level (brightness was set to 100 cd / m²) lasted almost 16 hours until the battery was completely discharged. When continuously watching YouTube videos in high quality (HQ) with the same brightness level via home Wi-Fi, the device lasted about 9 hours, and in 3D game mode - about 4 hours. The smartphone charges quickly enough: the time for a full charge is less than 2 hours.

Outcome

As for the cost of Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 mini S - or rather, the best configuration of this device (6036Y), with support for LTE and NFC, which we tested, it is offered on the domestic market only as a branded device of the domestic operator Beeline. Such a smartphone costs 7,990 rubles, which is a couple of thousand more than the previous mini-model of the Alcatel Idol series, which actor Konstantin Khabensky advertised on television not so long ago. And yet, even this price seems quite acceptable for such a nice, compact, but powerful enough and technically advanced device of a solid mid-range. For small money by the standards of the domestic market, the user receives a very high-quality product with high-quality materials, indisputable assembly, productive hardware stuffing, a screen of a well-thought-out size that is good for its level, which allows the device itself to remain within comfortable for the hand. Finally, we can state that not only among the “shovels” very solid mobile devices that meet most modern technical requirements, such as the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact, or even the even more affordable hero of today’s review, the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 mini S smartphone, began to appear.

Releasing lower versions of flagship smartphones has long been an indicator of good taste among most representatives of the mobile industry. The first to come to mind are Samsung, HTC and even Apple, with their sometimes maniacal attitude to positioning their own products on the market. The list can be continued, but the essence remains the same - the release of a smaller copy of the flagship gadget is nothing more than a signal to buyers: “Look, we offer an advanced product with many advantages, but for less money!”. This step allows you to attract more potential buyers and cover new market segments. But the main thing is that over time, attracted users who want to reach a new level may pay attention to more expensive branded products.

In our case, we are talking about TCL Communication. This Chinese industrial giant, after a complete buyout of the mobile business of the famous French manufacturer Alcatel-Lucent in 2005, began to confidently conquer the European mobile market. Using the experience of its direct competitors, and clearly following the current situation, already at the end of 2013, following its first flagship model ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL, its younger copy was successfully introduced to the market - compact, designed in the same style -.

How good is the product? What compromises did the engineers have to make when creating a smaller version? Is it worth saving and how will it affect the quality and performance in the end? We have to answer all these and other questions in the review of ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI.

Delivery and equipment

The ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI smartphone came to us for testing in the form of an engineering sample, so there is no need to talk about the quality of the content of the delivery set and possible accessories. But if you turn to the manufacturer's website for help, you can find out the following useful information. On sale on store shelves in a box with a smartphone should be:

  • Charger;
  • USB cable;
  • wired headset;
  • quick user guide.

As we can see, no frills, everything is pretty standard. This is quite natural, given the price segment this model belongs to.

Appearance, arrangement of elements

Externally, ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI looks pretty nice. The smartphone is a classic monoblock and has a rectangular shape with slightly rounded edges.

The case is created in a non-separable form, and visually it can be divided into two parts: the front side with the display and the back cover, which includes the sidewalls. The front side is completely black. There are no emblems, names and other tinsel here. This gives the design rigor and looks pretty nice. The display is securely hidden under the protective glass, which is framed by a thin and elegant glossy edging that rises slightly above the screen.

At the top is the speaker grill and the front camera lens. An event indicator was found near them, as well as proximity and light sensors.

Below the display are three touch buttons: "Menu", "Home" and "Back". When the screen is locked, they are not visible, and "wake up" only after the start of use. They use a low-brightness white backlight that is non-irritating and non-distracting when working at night.

In production models of the smartphone, an oleophobic coating is applied to the screen, but it was not found in our engineering sample. Therefore, the display got quite dirty, and it often had to be wiped.

On the top of the device are: the power button and a 3.5 mm audio jack for a headset. It is worth noting that the button mentioned above is located in the right place and allows you to operate the power-on process while holding the smartphone with one hand.

The volume rocker is located on the left side face.

On the right, under tight rubber caps, there are two slots for SIM-cards.

On the bottom of the smartphone, a micro-USB port and a microphone hole have found their place.

The back of the ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI case is made of high quality plastic. It has a brushed metal texture and is very pleasant to the touch. The back panel is finished in a complex semi-gloss grey-blue color, the hue of which depends on the lighting. In terms of design, it looks pretty good. It is also worth noting that the device is sold in the market in several color options for the rear panel. We are offered a choice of: gray, silver and pink colors. In our opinion, such a decision will appeal not only to men, but also to the representatives of the fair half.

At the very top of the back of the case is the main camera lens, framed by a chrome-plated metal rim. Nearby is a single-section LED flash and a noise-canceling microphone. In the center is a part of the name of the smartphone model - "ONETOUCH". In the lower right corner, a speaker grille is visible, above which part of the brand name - "ALCATEL" is applied.

However, during testing, we found a very unpleasant moment. The design of the main camera protrudes unnecessarily, so its chrome rim is highly susceptible to mechanical stress.

A good distinguishing feature of the smartphone is its low weight (96 g) and very modest dimensions (127.1 x 62 x 7.9 mm). Compared to the flagship ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL (size - 133 x 67.5 x 7.9 mm and weight - 110 g), this allows you to easily hold the device in one hand, almost without feeling it. The screen size also contributes to this. As you know, a diagonal of 4.3 inches has long been recognized among manufacturers as a kind of reference option. So to speak, the right compromise between size and convenience, which has a positive effect on the overall ergonomics when using the device.

On sale ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI is available in two versions. In the first case, this is a model with one SIM-card and 4 GB of internal memory (6012X), which supports microSD cards. In the other - a version with two SIM-cards and 8 GB of internal memory (6012D), but without a slot for memory cards. We got an engineering sample for testing, the distinguishing feature of which was the presence of only 4 GB of memory, despite the support of two SIM-cards.

As for the build quality, it is at a fairly decent level. The case has good rigidity, and nothing creaks in it. The only thing that upset us a little was the small gaps, especially between the front glass and its edging, where dust accumulates over time.

Summing up the intermediate results, we can say that ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI is a fairly convenient device to use. The gadget has a good design, which is a classic of the genre, as well as good ergonomics. Yes, he can not boast of advanced stylistic solutions, but in general, the smartphone leaves a pleasant impression.

The ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI model is equipped with a 4.3-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels. At the same time, the pixel density is 228 ppi, which is a good indicator that provides fairly good image detail. Yes, if you look closely, you can distinguish individual pixels, but this state of affairs can not be seen in all display modes. The only serious complaint from our side is the low definition of the fonts, which sometimes look a little blurry.

But otherwise, we have a good and high-quality IPS display. Matrices of this type are traditionally characterized by excellent viewing angles, high contrast and pleasant color reproduction. Our case was no exception, although the color temperature noticeably moves towards cold shades. Separately, it is worth noting the display backlight. It has a good adjustment range and high brightness, which allows you to work even outdoors on a sunny day. But the minimum level is slightly higher than required by comfortable work in the dark. There are no additional screen backlight settings.

The display unit of the smartphone is made using OGS technology, that is, there is no air gap between the glass and the screen. Thanks to this, the picture becomes more detailed, and the colors are bright. The absence of any obstacles between the finger and the display creates the effect that the image can actually be touched. But it would not be out of place to warn potential buyers that if such a screen fails or the glass is damaged, repairing a smartphone will cost much more, since the entire display unit must be replaced.

The built-in multi-touch technology sensor handles up to five simultaneous taps on the screen. The display is very sensitive and responds even to light touches, but there is no support for working with gloves.

It is worth noting a very good response time, which will not be out of place in games. Despite the lack of an oleophobic coating in our test sample, the sliding of the fingers on the protective glass is quite pleasant and does not cause discomfort. In general, there are no serious complaints about the display of the ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI smartphone: everything is done at a good level.

The device is equipped with a single multimedia speaker, which is located on the back of the device. It is quite loud and provides quite good sound over almost the entire available range. Only when the sound level approaches the maximum value does a slight distortion appear in the sound stream.

This state of affairs allows you to use your smartphone for games, watching videos on the Internet, calls and notifications without using additional devices. For true music lovers, we recommend purchasing good headphones or an external media system.

ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI has a built-in radio module that allows you to listen to the air of FM radio stations operating in the frequency range from 87.5 to 108 MHz. Traditionally, to turn on the radio, it is necessary to connect a headset, which is used as an antenna.

There are no complaints about the conversational dynamics. He copes well with his direct duties. The sound is good and moderately loud (considering the quality of the operator and the condition of the interlocutor's phone), which ensures a pleasant voice transmission.

Camera

The presence of several digital cameras in the current smartphone has long been no surprise. The ability to take beautiful pictures of a beautiful landscape on vacation or a trendy selfie in the bathroom are already standard requirements for modern gadgets.

The tested ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI is also equipped with two digital cameras - main and front.

The main one has a 5-megapixel module with f/2.8 aperture. It is equipped with a single-section LED flash, autofocus and face detection, and is also capable of shooting video at up to 720p at 30 fps. True, the video footage cannot boast of high quality. Also, the camera can work in widescreen mode, but the resolution of the matrix is reduced to 3.7 megapixels.

The quality of the resulting photos is average, but if you delve into the settings and choose the optimal lighting conditions, you can get pretty good copies. In other cases, really high-quality images can not be counted on. Despite the seemingly good resolution of the matrix, the image detail is at an average level. The camera noticeably distorts the color reproduction, and the white balance strives to go into cold shades. There is also a lack of dynamic range, and even the presence of an HDR shooting mode does not save the situation.

The only advantage of the smartphone's front camera is the fact that it is present in this unit. Otherwise, this is a weak 0.3-megapixel module with an f / 3.0 aperture, fixed focus and the ability to record video in 480p format.

The software that is responsible for controlling the operation of the cameras is distinguished by a good level of performance and an intuitive interface. The menu is made in the same style as the entire proprietary shell of the operating system. It has a simple and concise design, as well as easy access to settings, the location of which is remembered after the first use. Unfortunately, a small set of functions is available in the menu. But if we take into account the level of the device, then the situation, in our opinion, is quite justified.

User interface

ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI is delivered to stores with a pre-installed Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system.

The already familiar interface is complemented by a slightly stripped-down proprietary shell, which still has not received its own name. Visually, it looks very attractive, but the functionality is not much different from pure Android, except for a small number of additional features. These include the device's power saving mode and support for some gestures for working with incoming calls, an alarm clock and a music player.

If the smartphone is locked, you can see the time, weather and calendar on the display. This information is called up by swiping sideways. You can unlock the device using the context menu in the form of a circle, which allows you to get not only to the main screen, but also to launch the digital camera mode, as well as access messages and the phone book.

A rather interesting solution is the idea of dividing the available smartphone desktops for certain tasks. So, to the left of the home screen there is a table for widgets (there is no vertical scrolling), and to the right - with application icons, some of which are already divided into folders. However, the user has the ability to sort the content at his discretion. Swiping up from the bottom of the Start screen and desktops with applications opens a menu with shortcuts to all the programs installed on the device.

In general, the smartphone interface leaves a pleasant impression. The speed of its work does not cause significant complaints and is very fast, although in some cases there are slight slowdowns.

The truly controversial aspects of the operating system of the ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI model include a large number of pre-installed software and all kinds of games. On the one hand, an experienced user who has bought a new gadget for himself will be able to install all the necessary applications on his own, so the memory on the smartphone that is packed to capacity will cause bewilderment at best and will require additional time to remove unnecessary programs. On the other hand, for beginners and inexperienced Android users, the pre-installed set of programs will be more of an advantage than a disadvantage, as it will allow you to start using the device right out of the box. By the way, it is worth noting that Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, according to the manufacturer, is the only and final version of the operating system for this device, so you should not wait for updates to 4.4 or at least 4.3.

Hardware platform and performance

The ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI is based on a 2-core MediaTek MT6572 processor with a maximum clock speed of 1.3 GHz and a L2 cache of 256 KB. Its performance level can be described as average. The processor is based on the ARM Cortex-A7 microarchitecture using a 28nm process technology.

The integrated graphics are ARM Mali-400 MP1 with one cluster (core), operating clock speed of 500 MHz and support for OpenGL ES 2.0 and OpenVG 1.1. Recall that the sale of the smartphone is presented in two versions. The first is equipped with 4 GB of internal memory, of which 2 GB will be available to the user. The second has 8 GB, but only 5.6 GB will be available to the user. It is also worth recalling that in devices with 4 GB of internal memory, there is support for microSD memory cards up to 32 GB.

The amount of RAM ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI is only 512 MB. The consequence of this is the unstable operation of heavy applications, especially games.

Some demanding programs refuse to run, others may crash if there are already running applications in the device's memory. Therefore, there is no need to talk about multitasking. The overall weak performance level is clearly visible in gaming tests. Demanding games like Dead Trigger 2 and Asphalt 8 only run relatively well at low graphics settings.

There is heating of the smartphone case under active load, but it is not critical, although some may find it a little unpleasant.

Thus, in terms of performance, ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI lacks stars from the sky and is clearly focused on performing everyday tasks and running undemanding games. If you do not put insurmountable heights in front of it, then the resources of the device will be quite enough and working with it will not cause serious inconvenience.

Communication and communications

The smartphone can work with many modern mobile networks: GSM, WCDMA / HSPA +. The only thing that ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI cannot boast of is the support of new generation high-speed networks - 4G LTE.

The dual SIM version of the smartphone works according to the Dual SIM Dual Standby standard. This means that the device has only one radio module, so when talking from one SIM card, the second one will be temporarily unavailable. During the tests, the quality of calls and voice transmission were at a good level: no interruptions or self-drops were observed. However, it is worth noting that this also depends on the carrier used.

The set of communication capabilities is represented by Bluetooth 4.0 modules with support for A2DP and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n (2.4 GHz). Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi Hotspot features are also present.

Additionally, ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI is equipped with a GPS module with A-GPS support. The quality of its work is at a good level: searching for satellites and connecting to them takes only half a minute. On average, during testing there were about 7 pieces. At the same time, the location accuracy reached an error of only 3 meters.

Offline work

The device under test is equipped with a non-removable 1700 mAh lithium-ion battery. When performing everyday tasks (surfing the Internet, checking mail, listening to music), this is enough for more than a day of work offline.

Let's move on to the test results. While watching HD video at 50% display brightness and enabled Wi-Fi and GPS modules, the smartphone worked for almost 7 hours. In the case of a game simulation using the game Dead Trigger 2 (“Vault”, medium graphics settings), the device lasted 3 hours and 46 minutes at 100% display brightness and enabled Wi-Fi and GPS modules. It takes 3.5 hours to restore the original battery charge conditions.

Results

Paying attention to any copy, even made with love for details, the buyer involuntarily asks the question: “Is it worth it? Perhaps the original is better?

By releasing to the world, TCL Communication, knowingly or not, doomed its younger model to this comparison. Therefore, it is natural that the desire to clarify the situation reached our test laboratory. At the beginning of the review, we set ourselves a number of questions, to which, after conducting a comprehensive study, we will try to answer.

So, we have a light and compact smartphone ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI with a nice design. It has a 4.3-inch IPS screen with good viewing angles, high-quality backlighting and an oleophobic coating (in the commercial version), which is securely hidden under the protective glass. The body of the novelty is made soundly and has comfortable ergonomics, so you can control the main functions and navigate the operating system with one hand. The audio subsystem of ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI also deserves positive feedback: the multimedia speaker is moderately loud, with a pleasant sound on almost the entire range. Conversational speaker provides high-quality sound transmission. We should not forget about the presence of all the necessary network modules, the work of which does not cause any complaints, as well as support for a fairly capacious battery. The advantages of the smartphone include the presence of a model with support for two SIM-cards.

Now about the sad. Reducing the ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI and driving it into price limits, the engineers still had to make a number of unpopular compromises. The most striking of these is the support for only 512 MB of RAM. This will be quite enough to perform typical everyday tasks, but you can no longer play resource-intensive games. The quality of the camera modules is also not particularly impressive. True, all this allowed us to put a good price tag on the device.

In the dry end. Is it worth spending 2300 UAH. ($190) now and buy ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI or save up for a more productive model in the ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL line? Ultimately, it's up to the potential buyer to decide. On our own, we can only add that the tested smartphone is a fairly high-quality solution with an average level of performance, so if you are not a fan of heavy Android games and can safely do without a dozen simultaneously running applications, then it deserves your attention.

Advantages:

  • quite pleasant appearance and comfortable ergonomics;
  • good build quality;
  • compact dimensions and weight;
  • protective glass on the screen with an oleophobic coating (in the commercial version);
  • good 4.3-inch IPS-display, made using OGS technology;
  • high responsiveness of the touch substrate;
  • good sound quality of multimedia and conversational speakers;
  • good autonomy of work;
  • the presence of the necessary network modules;
  • the ability to work with two SIM-cards (in the 6012D version);
  • affordable cost.

Flaws:

  • mediocre camera modules;
  • the presence of only 512 MB of RAM.

We express our gratitude to TCL Communication for the smartphone provided for testing.

“Does Idol mini look like its big brother Idol X?” - you ask. I will answer: "Yes, but not in everything." And here it's not even the size of the case. The manufacturer took a radically different look at the "baby", leaving him from the flagship "X" only a similar number and arrangement of functional elements. However, there have been some changes in this respect as well. But more on that later!

When I first looked at Idol mini, the rear panel caught my attention. The manufacturer has so successfully used plastic imitating metal in it that you can only tactilely feel what material you are dealing with.

Stylish design of the smartphone is given by the front panel with protective glass, as well as metal-style power and volume buttons, a slot for the earpiece and the bezel of the eye of the main camera.

What certainly will not go unnoticed in the appearance of Idol mini is its compact size. Due to them, the device looks very neat. Moreover, with such dimensions (127.1x62x7.9 mm, weight - 96 grams), it will be convenient for absolutely everyone to control it with fingers holding hands, regardless of the size of the palms.

The case is assembled very well, all the elements fit snugly - nothing creaks, does not "crunch" and does not play.

The smartphone is available in three colors - black, silver, and for the fairer sex, there is also a pink version.

Ergonomics of functional elements

The right side face is given for slots for micro-SIM cards and , and the left side is for volume rockers.

The top has a 3.5mm audio jack and power button, while the bottom has a microphone and a micro-jack.

The back panel is “divided” between a speakerphone in the lower right corner, the inscription “Onetouch” in the center, and the main 5MP camera eye at the top.

I note that, like all previously tested Alcatel smartphones, it protrudes slightly above the body. On the right side of it is a noise-canceling microphone, and on the left is an LED flash.

On the front panel, above the 4.3-inch display, there is a speaker slot, a front-facing camera eye, and proximity/light sensors. Under the screen, when the smartphone is turned on and touched, the touch control buttons are illuminated.

Display

Idol mini's 4.3-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 480x854 pixels and 16 million colors is, in my opinion, the best solution among smartphones in this price segment.
High-quality IPS-matrix provided large viewing angles both vertically and horizontally. Her merit is also in the bright and saturated colors of the picture reproduced on the screen. At the same time, in bright sunny weather, one cannot do without a certain extinction of the displayed data on the display.

It is protected from scratches and other kinds of damage by a protective glass, the manufacturer does not specify what kind of product it is. In any case, its presence is already a big plus, moreover, in practice it has confirmed its value. As, however, the oleophobic coating applied to it significantly reduced the number of fingerprints that could be left with each interaction with a smartphone.

The display brightness can be adjusted both manually and automatically. The sensor recognizes up to 5 simultaneous clicks, it is sensitive and reacts to touch quickly.

Equipment performance

The "driving force" of Idol mini is a 2-core MediaTek MT6572 processor with a clock speed of 1.3 GHz and Mali 400 graphics. The amount of RAM is 512 MB.

The smartphone runs on Android 4.2.2 operating system out of the box.

According to the results of benchmarks, it turned out to be quite a worthy "middle peasant" in terms of performance.

In practice, he had no problems playing videos and not very demanding games. But in the case of the first, it will be necessary to acquire
microSD card, since 4 GB of the declared internal memory, of which only about 2 GB is available to the user, will not be enough to download video. The maximum external storage capacity is 32 GB.

But in the dual-SIM version of the smartphone, the user memory is twice as large - 8 GB. But there is no way to expand it. "RAM" is the same as in the single-symbol model.

Wireless modules

Idol mini features wireless communications such as 802.11 b/g/n with hotspot function, Wi-Fi Direct technology, and 4.0 with VPN function.

autonomy

Smartphone battery capacity - 1700 mAh. This is what the statistics of 100% battery consumption says: video playback - 2 hours, audio listening - 3.5 hours plus 3 hours of surfing the Web.

And this is taking into account the fact that on the test I received a sample, although not badly modified, but not a commercial version of the pipe.

You can reduce power consumption by using the provided power saving mode.

Camera

Idol mini has two cameras. The main module has a resolution of 5MP, and the front module has a resolution of 0.3MP.

Despite the absence of a special camera quick launch button on the smartphone case, it can be activated quite quickly from the lock screen.

The quality of the picture displayed by the front for comfortable communication was quite enough.

The quality of the photos taken by the main camera, supplemented by autofocus and LED flash, frankly speaking, did not cause delight. Although in good lighting conditions and using the settings provided for photography, although there were few of them, I managed to take quite good shots.

test photos

The video is recorded in a maximum resolution of 720p. In addition to choosing the quality of shooting and turning on / off the flash in the recording mode, nothing is provided for by the camera settings. With such a poor arsenal, the video, shot even at night, in my opinion, came out worthy for a 5MP module. Of course, there were some noises, and you can clearly see how the picture twitches in the case of autofocus.

test video

Speakers

Speaker two - conversational and speakerphone.
Communication, even in a noisy street near the road, provided me with quite comfortable communication with the interlocutor at the other end of the tube.

Although the smartphone is “mini”, but in terms of the power of the speakerphone, it, as they say, can “give heat”, to many larger devices. It is especially pleasant that even at maximum volume values, it does not emit extraneous noises that are unpleasant to the ear.

But its location can hardly be called too successful, but getting used to it, so as not to close it with your hand, is quite real.

Good sound through headphones.

Software

Idol mini "out of the box" runs on the Android 4.2.2 operating system. The software is similar to that previously discussed in . Therefore, the following are only illustrative illustrations.

The unlock screen gives you quick access to the camera app and the phone app.

You can control some smartphone functions using gestures. So, for example, to switch the music track, just shake the device, mute the sound of an incoming call, you can turn the device over.

conclusions

As a result, I will say that the Alcatel Onetouch Idol mini smartphone turned out to be very interesting as a mini version of the flagship Idol X. In addition to its compact size, it is attractive with a nice design, a bright IPS display with good viewing angles, high-quality speakers and good camera capabilities for its price of 1399 UAH.

I remember the device with good indicators of autonomy, and as for its performance, it is not indicative, but at the same time the price tag of the device justifies it.
