Since Microsoft bought the Nokia Lumia brand, the new Windows Phone 10 operating system was immediately adapted to these devices. However, this only applies to the new Lumiya models. Old smartphones, which were still released by Nokia, are not included in the list of compatible devices, which can be viewed on the developer's official website.

If your mobile phone is compatible with Windows 10 and you decided to install a new operating system, then follow the instructions:

  • Personal data may be deleted during installation. Therefore, we copy everything we need to a USB flash drive or computer.
  • We follow the link to the official website of the developer and register in the customer support program.

    A new page will appear. We go down and accept the terms of the license agreement. We press "Send".

    Now we go to the Windows Phone Store and download the program for evaluating the new OS.

    After installing the application, you should click "Get preview builds".

    After that, the update version will appear in the Windows Insider program (the very first line). You need to go to the gadget settings, select the "Update" item. A search for updates will start. Installation will take up to 30 minutes or more.

IMPORTANT! After installing a new OS on the phone, there may be problems with language packs, Wi-Fi connection, alarm clock and calendar, and other standard programs. They will have to be downloaded from the Store again.

How do I install Windows 10 Mobile over Android OS?

Before trying to install Windows 10 on Android, there are a few basic things to consider:

    Not all smartphone processor chips support Microsoft's operating system.

  • Windows Phone 7, 8 only support ARM and i386 processors. This is not the case with Windows 10.
  • The new operating system requires a lot of memory. Weak gadgets should not be flashed under Windows 10, as you can damage the old OS without the possibility of recovery.

The instructions for installing Windows 10 on top of Android will be as follows:

    Download the sdl.zip archive.

  • Download the sdlapp.apk program.
  • Install the application on your phone.
  • Extract the archive data to the SDL folder.
  • Copy the system image file into the same directory (as a rule, it is c.img).
  • We launch the utility.
  • We are waiting for the end of the installation.
  • We reboot the device.
  • Ready.

It is important to note that we do not recommend installing a Microsoft product on Android. Operating systems can conflict and damage to the device itself is possible. If you are anxious to find out how to install Windows 10 on an Android phone, then it is worth noting that it is better to wait for the official method or change your phone altogether. This will be more reliable.

For detailed instructions on installing Windows 10 on Android, see the video.

Many Windows Phone users are familiar with how Microsoft, to put it mildly, dumped the owners of older devices running Windows Phone 8.1. First, she struck their devices off the list of supported devices before sending out the first release update to Windows 10 Mobile, leaving only access to preliminary assemblies, and then closed it too. As a result, users who, for whatever reason, rolled back their OS to Windows Phone 8.1, cannot download Windows 10 Mobile. Only the more advanced are still trying to resist, making Interop Unlock and disguising their devices for those models for which the "ten" is available and all the relevant updates for it. But this, as it turned out, is not the only existing option. There is another method that does not require Interop Unlock and is suitable even for devices that do not have a memory card slot. If you have puzzled over how to install Windows 10 Mobile on an unsupported Windows Phone 8.1 smartphone, we recommend that you read this manual.

This method was tested on a Nokia Lumia 520 with Windows Phone 8.1 (8.10.14219.341) on board. We do not guarantee that it will help absolutely all users, since we do not have the necessary fleet of devices to fully test it. However, it is known that it is unlikely to work in the case of the HTC 8s and Nokia Lumia 530.

What you need:

1. Computer with Windows 7 / 8.1 / 10.
2. USB cable.
3. An account with administrator rights.

Instructions

1. Download the archive with the program for manual installation.
2. Download the archive with Windows 10 Mobile cab files. In this case, assembly files 10.0.10586.107 are provided.
3. On your computer, open the "C" drive and create the "App" folder in it (without the quotes).
4. Open the created folder, then the archive with the program and extract the contents of the latter into the "App" folder.
5. Go to the "Updates" folder in "App", open the archive with cab-files and extract them into this directory.
6. Return to the root of the "App" folder, find the "start.exe" file and run it as administrator (Right-click on the file> "Run as administrator"> "Yes").
7. In the program window, click on the "Settings" button. Make sure that the path to the "Update" folder where the Windows 10 Mobile cab files are stored is correctly specified in the window that appears.
8. Close the "Settings" window you opened.
9. Connect your smartphone to the computer via a USB cable and unlock the screen of the mobile device.
10. In the main window of the program, click on the "Information about the phone" button. If all the necessary drivers for a smartphone are installed in the system, a small information about it should appear in the window: name, manufacturer, model.
11. Click on the "Update phone" button.
12. Click once on the path to the Windows 10 Mobile cab files, and then on the "Ok" button.
13. The program will start downloading cab files to your smartphone. Make sure that the screen of your smartphone is unlocked during the download and pre-installation of the update.
14. Wait while the update download and installation process is complete. The progress bar may freeze several times for a long time, but this is normal. If during the migration process progress is stuck at 19 points and 63%, you can remove the battery, insert it back and turn on the computer, or restart the smartphone with physical buttons. To do this, you will need to hold down and hold the volume down button and the power button for 10-12 seconds.

If you want to install the Anniversary Update (Build 14393), which, by the way, works much better than the November Update, you will need to do and for which this update is available.

The good news is that most Windows smartphones are ready to install the new 10th version of Windows, and you can do it for free. Not very good - the full update only works on some Lumia models. And another fly in the ointment: the intermediate assembly, which is now available, causes certain inconveniences.

How to install Windows 10 on your phone: detailed instructions

Despite the fact that Microsoft has officially developed a new version of the operating system, which is not yet supported by all phones, Windows 10 can be installed on smartphones with Android OS. Unless, of course, you are willing to take the risk and install the "raw" version on your phone.

To download the top ten without any problems, the smartphone must meet the following requirements:

  • Windows 8.1 or later on board;
  • free more than 2 GB of RAM.
Unfortunately, full support for Windows 10 is only available on the Lumia 550, 640, 640 XL, 650, 950 and 950 XL.

Microsoft has posted a list of phone models that currently officially support the installation of Windows 10:

  • Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL,
  • BLU Win HD W510U,
  • Lumia 430,
  • Lumia 435,
  • Lumia 532,
  • Lumia 535,
  • Lumia 540,
  • Lumia 550,
  • Lumia 635 (1GB),
  • Lumia 636 (1GB),
  • Lumia 638 (1GB),
  • Lumia 640,
  • Lumia 650,
  • Lumia 730,
  • Lumia 735,
  • Lumia 830,
  • Lumia 930,
  • Lumia 950,
  • Lumia 950 XL,
  • Lumia Icon,
  • Lumia 1520,
  • MCJ Madosma Q501.

True, of the listed phones, only Lumia 550, 640, 640 XL, 650, 950 and 950 XL fully support the new system - it works on them most stably and gives the least percentage of errors.

Since July 2016, Microsoft has completely closed the ability to install Windows 10 on unsupported phones. On the net you can find instructions on how to download the top ten in an unofficial way, but, firstly, it takes too much time and effort, and secondly, on old phones, the new system is extremely unstable and slow. Thirdly, to download even the smallest system update in an unofficial way, the user must go through the entire procedure from and to the whole procedure with the installation of a false certificate and as a result, he risks getting a "brick" instead of the phone.

Installing Windows 10 on Lumia phones

If you have one of the phone models listed above, then you need to follow a sequence of several steps to install the Windows 10 Technical Preview version.

  1. Registration in the Windows Insider OS testing program: go to the official Microsoft website and accept all the conditions. As data for registration, you can use your Windows Live ID account or enter new ones.
    First, we register in the Windows 10 testing program
  2. After registration, you need to install the Windows Insider utility from the app store on your smartphone - it is available for any region.
    The next step is to download the Windows Insider application to the smartphone.
  3. After installing the application on your phone, you need to re-authorize on your mobile device with the same data that were used in the first step. After that, we will be re-authorized in the program on the phone.
  4. The installer will offer you a choice between Insider Fast or Insider Slow: in the first case, you will receive more frequent builds of the operating system, but there may be problems with stability, so it is better to prefer a slow cycle. In addition, in the second case, it is easier to roll back to the previous version of the system. Next, there is a choice between Insider Fast and Insider Slow - the second option is preferable
  5. When information appears in the Insider program that the system is ready for updating, you need to confirm your choice and go to the "Update" menu item in the phone settings. The system will find an update and the update will start. You just have to wait until Windows 10 is installed on your phone. This usually takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours. In the end - launching a system update in the smartphone menu item "Updates"

Problems after installing Windows 10 on your phone and how to solve them

As mentioned, the new system is not yet fully ready for use, so users often have problems with applications and settings. However, many of them have a solution:

  • alarms installed earlier on the phone, passwords to Wi-Fi networks do not transfer to Win 10 - they will have to be set up and re-entered;
  • Previously installed additional language packs disappear, but you can download them if you switch Fast and Slow cycles (Fast / Slow) in the Windows Insider application;
  • to open the Photos app when attaching a photo to an email or to put a background image on the blocking page, sometimes you have to try several times - it may not work the first time, but there is no reason for panic;
  • Microsoft Band fitness tracker sometimes needs to be reconnected via Bluetooth for the system to detect it;
  • the Internet does not immediately connect in roaming, despite the fact that everything is connected in the settings - to eliminate the error, you need to enable / disable this option several times;
  • incorrectly saved access point names in recovery images can be changed to correct ones by restoring APN settings using the Windows Mobile Recovery Tool;
  • the lack of VPN support and the list of applications in the Battery Saver utility, the inability to open playlists from the main page with a standard player, the deactivation of the Quiet Hours function when an event is scheduled in the calendar, poor sound quality when connecting wireless headphones and speakers - these problems cannot be solved in the current assembly.

Installing Windows 10 on Android Phones

It is worth making a reservation that on smartphones with Android OS it is best to use one of the Windows emulators, and not to flash the system. Then the main OS will remain "on board", and in case of problems with the "ten" it will be possible to continue to use Android calmly. Emulators that allow you to use the Windows interface:

  • QEMU;
  • BOCSH;
  • aDOSBox.

The installation files for each of them can be downloaded from the official sites. Installation requires a mouse and keyboard, an 8GB bootable USB flash drive or DVD drive, as well as a USB hub and a USB-to-Ethernet adapter. Installation is carried out from a bootable USB flash drive or disk. The process is simple and almost identical for each of the emulators - you need to download and install the emulator itself with the firmware on your device, download the .img image of the required operating system (can be found on the Internet), unpack and start working with the emulator.

If you need to put a full-fledged Windows 10 on top of Android, then you will need to completely reflash your smartphone, which carries great risks. It is better to contact a specialist with this question. Also, not all Android chipsets support Windows. Therefore, the above requirements for phones to install a Microsoft product require a quad-core processor with ARM architecture and i386. Chips will be optimal:

  • Odeon TPC-10,
  • Archos 9,
  • ViewSonic ViewPAD,
  • Iconia Tab W500,
  • 3Q Qoo.

Unfortunately, the build of Windows 10 is still in the testing stage and has many shortcomings. If the desire to put a "raw" product on a smartphone is not lost, then it is better to install the system on Lumia models that officially support it, and for Android phones, stop at downloading the emulator. As for the release of the final version of the OS, the date of its release has not yet been announced, although Microsoft assures that it will be released in 2017.

In general, the ability to install Windows 10 Mobile (and the new version of the operating system for smartphones will be called that way) appeared about six months ago, but then there were two problems: not all smartphones were supported and "Windows was still too raw." Basically, now, about a month or two before the release of the final version, if you really can't wait to evaluate the work of Microsoft, you can install the Preview version. This is done very easily (now I will tell you in more detail), but the presence of straight arms is still welcomed.

The first step is to check if Windows 10 Mobile can be installed specifically on your phone model. For this, a special list is posted on the official Microsoft website. In order not to go back and forth on sites, here's a screenshot for you. By the way, it is quite interesting that the list of supported devices includes not only Lumia devices, but also HTC One (M8) for Windows.

If everything is in order, then we continue on. Now you need to make sure that the latest version of the software is installed on your particular device. To do this, just select the "Phone update" item in the settings and click the "Check for updates" button. To install Windows 10 Mobile without problems, your smartphone must have Windows 8.1 build 8.10.14219.341 (or even newer).

In general, Microsoft warns ten times before installing that this Preview version is only for Windows fans and for everyday life it is not suitable for everyone. But we are geeks, so read here the list of things (in principle, there is nothing critical there) that does not work in this assembly and let's move on. And yes, your account must be registered in the Windows Insider program (you can do this here, nothing complicated, regular registration).

If everything is ready (updates are installed, there is a Windows Insider account), then you can now go directly to the installation. To do this, we need the Windows Insider app, which can be downloaded directly from the app store - link. We launch it on the phone and press the button "Get assemblies". Then you can choose two options for receiving updates: Fast (you will receive new assemblies faster, but the number of bugs in them may simply go off scale) and Slow (here, in fact, the opposite is true). Then just follow the instructions on the screen (you will need to click next several times and agree to the terms of use).

Ready. Now go to the settings and look for the item "Phone update". Press the "Check" button and wait until the assembly is loaded and installed. Here, the build of Windows 8.1 may be installed first, so just wait until the process comes to the end, and repeat all these steps with the Windows Insider app (you may even have to do this several times).

Microsoft begins shipping the first build of Windows 10 for smartphones on Windows Phone. The release date of the final version of Windows 10 in the company has not yet been announced, however, they say that it will be launched this year. Unfortunately, not all devices are included in the first wave. Windows 10 Technical Preview is available only for the following smartphone models: Lumia 630, Lumia 635, Lumia 636, Lumia 638, Lumia 730 and Lumia 830. The list of devices can be found on the official Microsoft website.

Before making an update, I recommend that you first read the full overview of the Windows 10 operating system with the latest build kit, because the new version of the operating system behaves extremely stable and there are no problems with it, after using Windows 10 only positive emotions arise: according to the Windows Insider program , the latest build (Build 10.0.10512).

Before installing Windows 10 for your smartphone, you should remember that your device may experience crashes, security vulnerabilities, data loss or damage. So, in order to get an operating system update to Windows 10, you need to take a few simple steps, after which your phone will be with the latest software version and you will see all the chips and innovations!

Step 1. The very first thing you need to do is register in the Windows 10 testing program and accept all the conditions, after which you can complete the registration process. To start registration, you need to click the "Start" button or on your own to start registration.

Step 2. The registration process takes only a few minutes. To register as a developer tester, use your standard Windows Live ID account to sign in to the Microsoft site. I am using my default account for this example.

You will see the registration start page, on which, by and large, you practically do not need to do anything, just scroll down and agree with the rules that you allegedly have just read!

It is also necessary to mark the checkboxes: what exactly will you develop applications for, whether you are a private person or is it a huge company and other little things that do not even have to be noted, but I will do it.

Then you need to click the only button on the page "Send", after which you will immediately see a welcome window with congratulations, which means that you have just registered as a developer-tester.

Step 3. Now that you've signed up for the tester, download the Windows Insider app from the Windows Phone Store. The Windows Insider app is now available for download in any region, you don't have to change the region to USA! This application must be downloaded to your smartphone, not to your computer!

Step 4. Log in to the application using your Microsoft account or developer account, if you registered it earlier. Now you can get the first build of Windows 10 for smartphones. If you want to get builds more often, but risk stability, select Insider Fast. But I would suggest staying on a slow cycle by choosing Insider Slow. In any case, if you have a lot of problems with the system, then you can roll back the system to the previous version of Windows.

Step 5. After you have an update version in the Windows Insider program (the very first line), then you confirm its choice, and then you need to go to the phone settings, the "Update" item. The search for new updates will take place and you will see that your smartphone has started updating. This update takes place in several stages and literally in 30 minutes you will have the Windows 10 operating system on your smartphone.

Step 6. If for some reason you do not like the new Windows 10 operating system, then at any time you can restore the old version of the Windows Phone 8 operating system using the new Windows Phone Recovery Tool 1.0.4 data recovery software:

The main problems after installing Windows 10 for smartphones and temporary solutions:
- Existing alarms do not transfer from Windows Phone 8.1 to Windows 10, they will have to be reset and set up again;
- Wi-Fi settings get confused, passwords must be re-entered;
- There is no VPN support in the current assembly, it will be implemented later;
- Additional language packs are missing when installing the US version of the assembly. You need to open the Windows Insider application, switch between Insider Fast / Slow in it - after that you can download these packages;
- The "Photos" application sometimes does not launch when you try to attach a photo to an email. Try to open it several times, after a number of attempts it will succeed;
- Quiet Hours does not work if there is an event in the calendar where you should not be disturbed. There is no solution yet;
- The list of applications has disappeared in Battery Saver. There is no solution yet;
- The access point names (APNs) in the recovery images are not saved correctly. In some networks, this causes cellular communication and the ability to exchange MMS messages to be lost. You can solve this problem if you restore APN settings using Windows Mobile Recovery Tool;
- Internet via cellular communication stops working in roaming, even if the corresponding option is activated in the settings. It needs to be turned on, off and on again;
- When watching video and outputting sound to Bluetooth headphones or speakers, the video quality is poor due to the influence of Bluetooth. Use wired headphones;
- Unable to connect to Microsoft Band fitness tracker. Go to the Bluetooth settings, disconnect the connection with the Microsoft Band, and then reinstall it;
- Data in DataSense is cleared. There is no solution, after the reset, the data is calculated anew;
- Sometimes it is not possible to set a background image on the blocking page. Try it several times;
- Standard player playlists cannot be opened from the start page. There is no decision;
- The Cortana tile and voice assistant settings are gone from the start page. Re-attach them.
