Huawei Y6 (2018) is a modern budget phone with a large display. Test smartphone Huawei Y6 (2018): high-quality assembly without any special claims Highway y6

The Huawei Y lineup has been significantly expanded by adding models with the Prime prefix in the name. But does the premium name justify itself in the budget model and is it worth it, even if a little, but still overpay?

Appearance

The Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 is a typical budget smartphone with some atypical features for low-cost smartphones. For example, our subject is equipped with a display with an aspect ratio of 18: 9. You don't need to be a prophet to predict the further advance of this screen format. And only a matter of time remains a complete or almost complete rejection of the "warm lamp" 16: 9 in favor of a newfangled aspect ratio. But now it is a "chip" for the budget class.

The body of the device is quite thin, and the weight is also low. But the rigidity of the case is clearly not enough, therefore, when trying to twist and squeeze, it willingly succumbs, but, remarkably, it does not make a sound. Because of this, for a moment, there is a feeling that the body is rubber. With a light tap on the smartphone, the mechanical keys rattle a little. The body is completely plastic, the back cover, of course, too. The back is smooth with a matte finish, so prints are not noticeable on the blue version. Of course, the least brand is the gold version, and the black one is the most dirty. However, even in the black version, the "fingers" will not cause much trouble, because the body is easy to clean. At the ends there is plastic with a mirror surface. Here prints are more noticeable, but, oddly enough, the glossy inserts are not particularly afraid of scratches and abrasions.

In front of the display there is an earpiece, a light and proximity sensor, a front camera, and a flash, which is hidden by black tint. Looking ahead, it should be noted that this masking of the flash greatly reduces the luminous flux, which affects the quality of lighting and, as a result, the quality of pictures. Here, the designers are clearly playing, because the yellow dot of the LED would not greatly affect the overall perception of the smartphone design. From the rear, you can see the camera, flash, microphone and fingerprint sensor, which is not available.

On the left side surface, only a tray is visible, which allows you to simultaneously install a pair of nanoSIM SIM cards and a microSD media. On the right side surface there is a standard set consisting of volume control and lock keys.

Only the connection connector is installed on top, and the microUSB connector, microphone and system speaker below.

Display

The smartphone uses an IPS-matrix with a diagonal of 5.7 inches, an aspect ratio of 18: 9 and a resolution of HD + (720 * 1440). It cannot be said that this is a drawback, because even in a more expensive one with a larger diagonal, the resolution is the same. The display supports up to 10 simultaneous clicks. The presence and quality of the oleophobic coating could not be verified because the smartphone was provided with a protective glass installed. Testing has shown that exactly the same matrix is used as in the slightly more accessible one. With the maximum backlight power, the brightness of the white field is 386.77 cd / m2, and the brightness of the black field is 0.383 cd / m2, which gives a static contrast ratio of 1010: 1.

With color accuracy, the situation is the same as in the case. The measured gamma value is 2.54, the color temperature is quite high. The color deviation Delta E on a wedge of gray gradually increases from black to light tones, and reaches 19.1 on white. For primary colors (CMYRGB), the deviation does not exceed 6.8. The color gamut does not match the standard sRGB color space a little, but it is quite close to it.

Sound

The smartphone is equipped with a pair of speakers - spoken and system. Unfortunately, the earpiece is not used as a play-along. However, the system speaker itself is quite loud. When playing a test signal with a frequency of 1 kHz at a distance of 1 meter from the smartphone, a level of 81.3 dBA was recorded, which is very loud by the standards of smartphones. There are no obvious defects like crackling or hiss, but at some frequencies the speaker chokes when the volume is set to maximum, and the frequency range is not impressive. However, taking into account the cost of the subject, the sound quality should be recognized as quite decent. When the test signal was reproduced at the analog audio output when operating on a 32 Ohm load, a value of 233.2 mV was recorded, and when using a 16 Ohm load, 171.3 mV.

Performance

The smartphone is based on the same system-on-a-chip as in - Qualcomm Snapdragon 425. This SoC, made in 28 nm process technology, is equipped with 4 Cortex A53 cores with a frequency of up to 1.4 GHz. The video subsystem is based on Adreno 308. RAM type LPDDR3 - 3 GB, which is 1 GB more than the Y6 2018. ROM is also more - 32 GB versus 16 GB. Looking ahead, it is worth noting that in addition to the larger volume, the built-in media is also more nimble.

System performance was measured in synthetics PCMark, 3DMark, Geekbench 4, AnTuTu v7. Memory speed was evaluated using the AndroBench application. Testing was also carried out in cross-platform javascript tests (Octane, Mozilla Kraken JavaScript and SunSpider). The results of these tests significantly depend on the browser used, so Google Chrome was used as the most common one. We also conducted testing in the CPU Throttling Test application, which determines throttling (throttling) under long-term high loads. This test evaluates the efficiency of the heat dissipation system and the performance under prolonged loads.
The following smartphones were chosen as opponents:
: MediaTek MT6737T, 3 GB, RAM, 5.5 inches, 720 * 1280;
: Samsung Exynos 7 Quad (7570), 4 cores (4x1.4 GHz), 2 GB, RAM, 5.5 inches, 720 * 1280;
: Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 2GB RAM 5.7 '' 720 * 1440

Camera

The smartphone uses exactly the same rear camera as the. It is based on a 13 megapixel sensor with 5 phase sensors. The lens aperture is f / 2.2. The front camera is 8 megapixel with an f / 2.0 lens aperture, while the regular version of the Y6 2018 is equipped with a 5 megapixel sensor. The front-facing Y6 Prime 2018 not only has a higher resolution, but also the overall quality of the images obtained, both in good lighting and in low light.

daylight artificial lighting, 30 lx

flash lighting

The subject also has a front-facing flash, but it is tinted in the color of the body, so the luminous flux from it is small, and only 3.4 lux was recorded at a distance of a meter from the smartphone. The rear flash is much more powerful - at a distance of 1 meter, it provides illumination of 33.5 lux. The results are almost the same as in the case.

There are no manual settings in the pre-installed camera control application, but it is possible to transfer control to third-party applications using the Camera 2 API. In addition, there is support for shooting in RAW.

To assess image quality, a test pattern was captured in Adobe Lightroom at ISO 100-3200 in 1 EV steps. Below are the crop fragments.

Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 is a budget smartphone with a high-quality FullView screen. The gadget has got a powerful external speaker, which provides excellent sound. The device was announced in May 2018.

Appearance and ergonomics

Huawei U6 Prime 2018 looks both practical and stylish. This effect is achieved largely thanks to the chrome frame that connects the plastic cover and the glass front panel. On the back matte surface there is a round fingerprint scanner, which accurately and quickly reacts to touch. A little higher is the protruding horizontal block with flash and main camera. There is an additional microphone literally nearby.

The entire front part is covered by a glossy 2.5D glass. Although a "bezel-less" display is used here, there are still some indents and frames. All navigation buttons “moved” to the screen, becoming virtual. The lower edge received symmetrical grilles, under which the multimedia speaker and the main microphone are hidden. And between these holes there is a microUSB port. At the top you can find only a headphone jack.

The assembly is very high quality, and the smartphone is extremely pleasant to use. Rounded corners and edges improve ergonomics. Available colors: gold, black, blue. Dimensions: height - 152.4 mm, width - 73 mm, thickness - 7.8 mm, weight - 150 g.

Display

The Y6 Prime 2018 houses a 5.7-inch FullView screen. This IPS-matrix has a resolution of 1440 by 720 pixels, and also received an aspect ratio of 18: 9. This display stands out for its better contrast and natural color reproduction. There is an automatic brightness control. Outdoors in bright weather, the image remains readable, but with a noticeable loss of shades. Through the settings, you can turn on the eye protection mode, as well as lower the resolution to save energy. If desired, it is possible to adjust the color temperature.

Iron and performance

The U6 Prime 2018 smartphone is powered by a modest Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 quad-core processor clocked at 1400 MHz. It uses a budget 3D accelerator Adreno 308. There are two versions of the device: with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, as well as with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. The device has a rechargeable battery with a capacity of 3000 mAh. In active mode, the charge is enough for about a whole day.

The device is based on the latest Android 8.0 operating system with a preinstalled EMUI 8.0 shell. In the AnTuTu v7 test, the most powerful modification is gaining about 47,000 points. In real conditions, the smartphone copes with relatively simple tasks with dignity. Brakes are felt only when minimizing programs, as well as when changing animations when more than three applications are running simultaneously. Also, this gadget is not suitable for demanding games, but you can still launch many toys.

Communication and sound

There is a surprisingly powerful external speaker on the underside of the Huawei Y6 Prime 2018. Its volume level reaches 88 dB, which allows you to comfortably listen to music even on a noisy street. At the same time, the shades of high-quality sound do not disappear anywhere. You can really enjoy great sound through your headphones too, thanks to Histen technology that realizes extra volume. An interesting karaoke mode is built in here. The earpiece speaker shows itself from the good side. The premium version of the phone supports LTE networks. The device supports the operation of two SIM-cards and one memory card.

Camera

The back of the Y6 Prime 2018 has a main 13-megapixel camera with 2.2 aperture, fast phase detection autofocus and dual flash. In the daytime, you can create fairly detailed images with high-quality color reproduction. Focusing is lightning fast. But insufficient lighting leads to a loss of detail and shades. There is a popular HDR mode that can improve the quality of photos. The 8-megapixel front-facing camera is doing well with its own tone flash. AR Lens function makes it possible to quickly change the background. Also, the front module has a face unlock function.

Video reviews

Modern mobile gadgets always delight with stylish design, high-quality and large screen, good performance and support for other high-tech devices. Nevertheless, there is one very significant point that manufacturers either forget about, or specifically assign it almost the last role - this is the battery life.

Engineers and designers of companies are trying to make new models of smartphones thinner, more powerful, with huge screens at Full HD resolution, with support for a huge range of applications, in general, more beautiful and more expensive. All this in order to cause delight of the future owner and sometimes even awe before his creation. And in pursuit of such "beauty" the manufacturer very often neglects energy conservation, that is, autonomy, and this is a fact.

Is it impossible to carry advanced technologies along with enviable characteristics and have excellent autonomy? No matter how it is!

This statement is refuted by the hero of today's review - a stylish and very capable gadget from the middle price range, distinguished by a capacious battery and good technical indicators. This is Huawei Y6 Pro. The characteristics, hardware and communication capabilities, as well as the opinions of experts, coupled with the reviews of ordinary smartphone owners, will be discussed later in the review. On the shelves of many stores, the model is presented as Enjoy 5, Honor 5X Play, Honor 4C Pro and Holly 2+. But under the lid the inscription Huawei Y6 Pro invariably flaunts (price - 11 thousand rubles).

Appearance

The gadget has a monoblock and attractive design. The model is gently rounded at the corners and looks like a classic rectangular smartphone. The five-inch screen is bordered by a black insert and recessed into it, due to this, visually, it looks a little larger than its dimensions. If you look at the top and bottom frames more closely, you can see the original and quite nice texture.

Front

The front-facing camera eye is located in the traditional place for this kind of gadgets - above the screen. Approximations also make up his company. Directly under the screen itself and just above the brand logo are conveniently located on-screen icons: "square", "triangle" and "circle". The icons have familiar functionalities: Recent Apps, Back, and Home.

If you are left-handed or you just don't like the location of the icons, you can easily change them in the Huawei Y6 Pro menu. Reviews of the owners are full of words of gratitude for such, albeit small, but for someone a critical feature of the gadget.

Rear

A very remarkable metal frame runs along the perimeter of the device, which perfectly contrasts with the plastic case, which, by the way, has an original and pleasant to the touch texture. On the back of the gadget, at the top, there is a camera with a flash. Just above the peephole, you can see the microphone, and below you can see the nice logo of the manufacturer.

You will not find speakers in the usual place for such dimensions. The engineers found it more appropriate to place them on the bottom end, to the micro-USB connector. At first glance, it may seem that the speakers have a stereo layout (holes on both sides of the output), but in fact there is only one speaker, and the sound flows only through one grille in the Huawei Y6 Pro. The reviews of the owners of the gadget were slightly divided in this case: someone was quite satisfied with such a false grille and mono sound, and someone sunk into the soul that he was being deceived.

Under the removable cover, you can see a pair of modern micro-slots for SIM cards and one place for a micro-SD drive. The battery takes up almost all the space, but nevertheless does not interfere with working with cards. Below it you will see identification numbers, as well as the series number, assembly and other technical information about the Huawei Y6 Pro. Reviews about the "friendliness" of the lid are mostly positive: with proper skill, it can be easily pushed off with a fingernail and just as easily put in place.

Ergonomics and gamma

With its impressive weight of 160 grams, the device has the appropriate dimensions: 143.1 x 71.8 x 9.7 mm, which fits well into the decency for five-inch gadgets. At the moment, official dealers have two versions of the colors: Huawei Y6 Pro Gold (golden) and Gray (gray).

Both scales look great both in the hands of strong men and weak women, and regardless of status and age, be it a student or a respectable gentleman over 60. At the price of Huawei Y6 Pro Gold and Gray do not differ, so what to choose is a matter of taste.

Screen

The five-inch model has a basic resolution of 1280x720 pixels, which even today, in search of "bigger, higher and more powerful", is considered a decent characteristic in this class of devices. The density of dots per inch is also quite good - 294 ppi. And all this works on a quite sensible IPS-matrix, with proper saturation and contrast.

The brightness adjustment range has a good spread across the entire Huawei Y6 Pro series. The view of the corners is also up to par. You can easily watch a photo or video with one or two friends. Moreover, the viewing angles are equally good both horizontally and vertically for all Huawei Y6 Pro models. Reviews of the owners note the only, and for some, the critical flaw of the screen is the absence. So a microfiber napkin will become your constant companion, if you don't have the desire to fork out for an expensive coating procedure.

A more or less inexpensive rescue from dust, scratches and other dirt for Huawei Y6 Pro is a cover, so the first thing that smartphone owners recommend is to buy any case they like after buying a gadget, since there are more than enough designs, shapes and varieties of material in stores.

Hardware platform

For the speed of the smartphone, the Mediatek MT6735P series platform is responsible for operating on four cores with a clock speed of 1.3 GHz (ARM "Cortex-A53"). The integrated chip from the Mali T720 MP2 series at 600 MHz is responsible for video streams. In general, the capacities for most daily tasks are more than enough for the Huawei Y6 Pro models.

The review showed that the gadget is equipped with two gigabytes of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. Moreover, the user of them remains about 10 GB. The device supports all modern micro-SD-drives up to 128 GB, and therefore Huawei Y6 Pro owners should not have problems with free space. The case from the brand (branded) is equipped with special pockets, so you can store all your memory cards and SIM cards in one place.

Communications

The model provides for work with two micro SIM cards. They work alternately, that is, when one SIM is active, the other switches to offline mode. The gadget feels great in the basic networks of all well-known mobile operators and supports 2G, 3G and 4G technologies.

There is also support for popular wireless protocols: Wi-Fi at 802.11 b / g / n points and bluetooth of the fourth version. Some owners in their reviews complain that the Huawei Y6 Pro mobile phone was not equipped with NFC technology, but for such a price, the available characteristics are more than attractive.

In addition to the standard set, it supports domestic GLONASS and imported GPS / A-GPS. The gadget can easily be used as a navigator along with the standard Google Maps.

Autonomous work

Two things are particularly appealing about the Huawei Y6 Pro - price and battery life. The available 4000 mAh battery allows the phone to “live” in normal mode for about two days. Even if you load it, as they say, to its fullest, the charging will still be enough for almost a day.

More specifically, at full screen brightness, playing a video in Full HD drains the battery for almost eleven hours, which is an excellent indicator for models in this segment.

You can significantly extend the autonomy if you enable special energy-saving modes and disable especially "gluttonous" third-party applications. Moreover, the gadget takes care of optimizing the operation of the software and the entire device as a whole, competently recalling and connecting the mode required at the moment (customizable function).

We should also mention one more feature of the model. Y6 Pro can act as an external battery powering other gadgets, and this, as a rule, is the prerogative of expensive devices from the category "the price has exceeded 30 thousand rubles." Users in their reviews appreciated this feature, giving the highest rating in the autonomy section.

The line of inexpensive smartphones Y from Huawei continues to be replenished with devices oriented to different budgets. A while ago, we looked at the younger face of the series and the older brother. And it is logical that between them there should be another smartphone, the so-called middle peasant. And he is. Today we are getting acquainted with.

Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 is available for purchase in Ukraine for 4999 hryvnia (~$192) ... It should be noted that there is also a smartphone on the market without the Prime prefix in the name. The difference between them is that the Prime version has 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, as opposed to the usual version with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. In addition to more memory, the older modification received a fingerprint scanner on the back, which is not available in the standard version.

Contents of delivery

Everything here is unchanged and exactly the same as in and. White cardboard box with a power adapter (5V / 1A), a USB / MicroUSB cable and a key for removing the SIM-card and memory card slot.

Design, materials and assembly

The smartphone is sold in three possible body colors: black, gold and blue. My sample is in blue.

The design of the device as a whole repeats that of its counterparts. On the front is an elongated display covered with 2.5D glass with large bezels on the sides and small but asymmetric bezels at the top and bottom.

The back is made of matte plastic, but such a beautiful iridescent effect, as it is in blue, was not brought here.

But the perimeter frame is just as glossy. She, by the way, is also plastic.

The plastic is of good quality, although even in blue it is a little easily soiled.

On the back, near the main camera block, in the place where the microphone is located, you can observe a slight bulge. Tactilely it is practically not felt and it is quite possible that it isa feature of an exclusively test sample.

The assembly of the smartphone is gorgeous. There are no squeaks or backlashes. From the box, a protective film is glued to the glass, but the oleophobic coating is not applied to it.

Layout of elements

In front of the screen there is a tiny event indicator, a window with light and proximity sensors, a front camera peephole, an earpiece and a flash.

Below the screen is the same Huawei inscription.

On the verge on the right -power / unlock button and volume rocker.

On the left is a slot for two nano SIM cards and a microSD memory card. Complete - not hybrid!

On the bottom edge there is a microUSB port off-center and six cutouts to the left and right of it. Behind them are the microphone and the main speaker, respectively.

Above is the classic 3.5mm audio headphone jack.

On the back of the body, in the upper left corner, there is a slightly protruding block with the main camera, an inscription with the characteristics of cameras to the left of it, and to the right is a flash. The glass that covers the camera and flash is slightly recessed in the frame. There is an additional microphone next to the unit.

A little below is the circular area of the fingerprint scanner.

Below is the manufacturer's logo and other service information.

Ergonomics

It is convenient to use a smartphone. It has small dimensions - a weight of 150 grams, a diagonal of 5.7 ″, plus rounded edges and corners.

In general, its size is something in between and. And if the latter was not very convenient to use with one hand, then Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 is quite comfortable.

The control buttons and the fingerprint scanner are in their usual places.

Display Huawei Y6 Prime 2018

The smartphone received an IPS display with a diagonal of 5.7 inches with an aspect ratio of 18: 9 and a resolution of 1440 × 720 pixels (HD +).

The low resolution is hard to spot unless you stare at the screen.

The colors are close to natural, the contrast is good. The brightness of the display is sufficient for outdoor use, but without much enthusiasm. Auto brightness generally works well, but not perfect - sometimes you want to make the display a little brighter.

The viewing angles are not bad, as for an inexpensive smartphone, but with strong diagonal deviations, a decrease and an increase in contrast are noticeable. With linear ones, this is not observed. In principle, the screen is normal.

In the screen settings, as usual, you can correct the color temperature of the screen and activate the eye protection mode. There is a function to automatically reduce the screen resolution to save power consumption. But I don't see much benefit in it.

Performance

The smartphone is equipped with an old and low-performance Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor. It consists of four Cortex-A53 cores and operates at a maximum clock speed of 1.4 GHz. The graphics accelerator used is Adreno 308.

In synthetic tests, it is expected to show modest results.

In practice, the device copes well with everyday tasks. If a large number of applications are running, the animation of opening / closing applications slows down slightly. And the programs are also launched not very quickly. But if there are few applications in the background, no problem. You can't really play heavy games on a smartphone, but simple time killers go well.

In general, the speed of the smartphone can be called normal, as for this class of devices.

The amount of installed RAM is 3 GB, and the permanent memory is 32 GB. Of these 32 GB of storage, 24.79 GB is available to the user. The storage can be expanded by installing a microSD card up to 256GB without sacrificing a second SIM card.

Cameras Huawei Y6 Prime 2018

The main camera module of the smartphone received a resolution of 13 megapixels and an aperture of f / 2.2.

There is nothing new in the issue of the quality of the resulting images. With enough light, photos are obtained with normal detail and color rendition, autofocus is fast. If it is weak, colors and details are noticeably lost. The dynamic range is average and HDR activation doesn't help much.

With the video, too, everything is very average. The maximum video resolution is Full HD (1920 × 1080), there is no electronic stabilization.

The front camera has a resolution 8 MP (f / 2.0). In general, it shoots well, but you shouldn't expect anything special from it.

The camera application is typical for the manufacturer's smartphones. Swipe to the right of the shooting screen to see the available shooting modes, and swipe to the left - advanced camera settings.

In the modes, I discovered the “Focus” function (which, by the way, was not in it), which theoretically allows you to change the focus point after the picture was taken.

Usually, we saw such an opportunity in smartphones with a dual main camera, and I wondered how this happens in Huawei Y6 Prime 2018, where the main camera module is one. But in practice, the focus point does not change at all. So what is the point of adding it then? Maybe something will change with the firmware update, but so far it does not work.

Unlocking methods

Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 can be unlocked by two methods - fingerprint scanner and face recognition. Just in case, let me remind you once again - there is no fingerprint scanner in the Huawei Y6 2018 smartphone (that is, without the Prime prefix).

The scanner works in the usual way for Huawei - very quickly and accurately.

As always, they can also perform various actions: control the release of the camera, answer a call, turn off the alarm, open the notification panel and flip through photos in the gallery with swipes across the scanner pad.

As for unlocking with face recognition, then it works a little ... not that worse, but slower than in the same one. But even so, it can be easily used.

The setup process is traditionally fast. Only one face is added.

There are two methods to choose from for the unlocking process: activate the screen and, after identifying the face, make a swipe across the screen, or immediately go to the desktop or to an open application. There is also the function of smart notifications, where the content of the notification on the lock screen will be hidden and will be displayed in full only if the smartphone recognizes the owner.

Autonomy

The smartphone has a 3000 mAh battery. In general, Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 lives in about the same way as the more than once mentioned brothers.

When using a predominantly 4G connection, the screen time was a little over 4.5 hours. And with a constant Wi-Fi connection, the screen was active for more than 6 hours, which is quite good for a 3000 mAh battery.

In other words, the battery will last for a day of active work, with a more gentle operating mode, you can count on a day and a half. Although it all depends, of course, on the operating scenario of a particular user.

Sound and communication

In Huawei Y6 Prime 2018, the sound component was approached with special attention. At least judging by.

In fact, we have the following. There are no questions about the conversational dynamics at all, the interlocutor is heard well. The sound from the main speaker, as announced, is very loud and surprisingly clear.

The sound is good in the headphones. There is an equalizer and other audio effects.

In addition, again on the manufacturer's website, they promise that with the update they will add a function that will allow connecting multiple devices for simultaneous music playback.

The communication capabilities of this smartphone are limited only by wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n and Bluetooth 4.2 (LE) modules. No NFC module. That mobile communication, that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth - work as expected, there are no problems with them.

Firmware and software

The smartphone comes with Android 8.0 operating system and EMUI 8 proprietary shell.

In fact, it contains everything that we saw in the older model (Y7 Prime 2018). Everything is as usual - the skin is customized by themes, the desktop layout changes, there are several combinations of the navigation bar and the activation of a movable button. There is a one-handed control mode and a couple of other gestures.

conclusions

Another smartphone in the manufacturer's affordable line, which, by the totality of all parameters, is still a kind of middle ground between the more budgetary Huawei Y5 2018 and the more expensive Huawei Y7 Prime 2018.

The buyer gets a remarkably assembled and convenient smartphone, a good display with 18: 9 proportions and an optimal diagonal of 5.7 ″, a fast fingerprint scanner and an excellent software component. Also, the advantages include the presence of a face unlock function and a full slot for the simultaneous use of two SIM-cards and a memory card.

A $ 200 smartphone? - To you in the department where your eyes are increasingly widespread. Manufacturers are trying very hard to succeed here, because the price segment is really very massive. There are both angry and glamorous. Today we have a device from the second category. Let's quickly see what kind of animal it is.

What is it?

Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 is a large (5.7 ”display diagonal) budget Android smartphone in a plastic case. At the present time, you can not add that it is "almost full screen" (aspect ratio 18x9), but it is important to note that without "bangs / monobrow".

Why is it interesting?

First, I need to clarify that the word Prime in the headline is very important. If we remove it, we get a completely different model. Younger and already clearly budget: 2 GB of RAM, 16 permanent memory, without a fingerprint scanner, and with a worse front camera. But without external differences, except for the golden version of the body color (black and blue are also found). It was he who came across to us: we immediately see that this is a model with the title of Prime.

There is something a little more impressive here. The screen resolution, as in the younger model, is 1440x720, but the RAM is already 3 GB, and the constant is 32 GB. At the heart of the device is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 (MSM8917) platform - a quad-core processor with a frequency of up to 1.4 GHz. A 3000 mAh battery, a microUSB connector, a fingerprint scanner on the back ... Bored? Prime also has more interesting features. Front-facing flash, a full-fledged tray for 2 SIM + 1 MicroSD, face unlock function, dual ka ... Stop. It's not double. Seemed? Let's take a closer look.

What is in the box?

There is nothing extra in the box. In addition to the smartphone itself, there is a charger, cable and a paper clip. All jokes, but a paper clip is really the right thing. There is still no standard on the SIM card tray ejection holes, and the pin that can easily open the tray in the iPhone does not fit into the hole of the Huawei Y6 Prime, tested. So don't waste your paperclip. And be careful with the card tray, it's as long as a French baguette.

From the pleasant - a neat protective film is already glued to the screen for constant wear. From the unpleasant: it is more of a film than glass, and scratches quite easily. And also - no headset included (but it will be in commercial deliveries, I just had no luck with the sample).

What does it look like?

More expensive than it is. Although this is a subjective assessment. But precisely because of the peculiarities of the appearance, it may seem that the camera here is double. Its lens and flash are covered with a black elongated module, exactly the same behind which two lenses are usually installed in more expensive models (the same Y7 Prime). But here he is alone. In addition to this module, on the rear panel there is a “dot” of the second microphone and a traditional round fingerprint scanner.

The bezels around the edges of the screen are quite thin. At the top of the bezel, there is an LED indicator, a light sensor (which pretends to be a second front camera), the front camera itself, an earpiece and an invisible selfie flash. The front camera is also used to unlock the smartphone for face recognition. After pressing the power button and before the face is recognized, you can see the corresponding inscription on the screen.

Under the screen there is only a mirrored manufacturer's logo, all control buttons are drawn on the screen itself. On the bottom edge - the most banal (like everyone else) round slots for a microphone and a speaker on the sides of the MicroUSB connector. On the right is the power button and volume rocker, on the left is only the card tray, and on the top there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack. So far, fortunately, only the flagships refuse it, as well as MicroUSB - in favor of Type C.

Everything is plastic, but assembled conscientiously, nothing creaks or dangles. The roundness of the forms and the glossy mirror bezel around the perimeter of the device generally make it a kind of glamorous thing. At least this white and gold option. For some reason, I remembered the iPhone of the first three generations, their polished metal edging made a similar impression.

How good is the screen?

The 5.7-inch screen was once considered huge, but today it is just big. For some reason, the programs displaying the characteristics of the device are simultaneously confused and determine the diagonal of 5.9 ", but the line confirms: 5.7. Despite the relatively low resolution, the pixels are invisible, everything is fine with the viewing angles. The maximum brightness is 345.131 cd / m2, the brightness of the black field is 0.393 cd / m2, the contrast is 878: 1. Quite good indicators, but the color gamut let us down a little and the screen is rather cold. However, this is not the first time we have encountered such a feature of Huawei displays. Let me remind you that the measurements were carried out with the default parameters, if desired, the color can be corrected in the settings.

What about performance, autonomy, sound?

The Snapdragon 425 processor is an old and proven option for budget workers. More than one generation has been built on it. Here is Xiaomi with the Redmi 4 and 5 A series, the Samsung J-series, and the E5-e Moto, and many other models. Performance is predictable. In tests, the numbers are depressingly low, but in real life there is not much to complain about. The interface works smartly, simple toys work without problems. Something a little heavier like NFS: No Limits or Minecraft (a world with many objects) is also on the way, though not as fast as demanding players would like.

Let me remind you that the Prime model has exclusively 32 GB of storage and 3 GB of RAM. Normal for a modern average person. Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz only), Bluetooth, GPS / GLONASS are standard. No frills like NFC or infrared remote control. The most attentive readers will object that there should be NFC, but in our modification with the ATU-L31 index this chip is not. And there is it only in the ATU-L11 version, I can not say anything about its deliveries to our market. But I can wish Huawei to buy modern Wi-Fi modules as soon as possible, because this story with the lack of support for the 5 GHz band in almost all devices except flagships has been dragging on for a long time and it would be time to solve it.

But there is an FM radio. By the way, we also note the sound. In the marketing campaign for this device, a particularly loud speaker is mentioned, giving out "up to 88 dB". Indeed, subjectively it sounds louder than average. At the same time, it does not wheeze at maximum volume and quite accurately fulfills frequencies that are higher. Bass transmission is understandably worse. But all the same, for sounding gatherings in the absence of other speakers - it will do better than most "classmate devices".

Although this figure of 88 decibels haunts, let's check. We take a device for comparison (in our case, this is the iPhone 8), on it and on the experimental one, we alternately launch the same works from the repertoire of Metallica and AC / DC. We measure the noise level with a third smartphone using a software sound level meter from the Smart Tools package at a distance of 2 cm from the speaker. We count the average values and compare. Y6 Prime at its peak produced 84 dB, with an average of 79. The opponent got 83 and 78 respectively. Dry numbers say that the speaker is hardly a head louder than everyone around. But it's still loud. And you can make it even louder in the "Party" mode, for which you will need at least one more smartphone of the same type: they will "sing in chorus".

The battery is average, 3000 mAh, this is a common capacity. The device removed from the charge in the morning by 10 o'clock in the evening shows 50-60% of the charge. With an average level of use. Just do not ask what is included in it, you will still be wrong. If you use it less intensively, you can do without charging for two days. Even more is possible, especially if you use the maximum power saving mode. This function, familiar from other Huawei devices, turns the smartphone into a dialer, turning off all non-essential and reducing the brightness of the screen backlight to a minimum. In an extreme situation, when there is absolutely no place to recharge, it can help, it is useful.

What about the firmware and interface?

Here we have Android 8.0 Oreo with the EMUI 8 shell. Nothing radically new, desktops and folders are like in iPhones like most Chinese competitors. However, those who wish can bring applications to a separate screen; this option is available in the settings. EMUI has its own versions of the popular functions for cleaning memory, reducing the visible area of the screen for one-handed operation and optimizing performance. For each of the two SIM-cards, you can set up a separate ringtone, call forwarding settings, allow or deny data transmission in general or only in roaming. There are a number of interesting little things like the "pocket" mode (which increases the ringtone volume when the phone is in your pocket), the ability to hang up the call with the power button or the bluetooth modem mode (in addition to the usual Wi-Fi hotspot function). There is a vision protection mode (blue filter), it can be turned on automatically according to a schedule (but you cannot say "turn on after sunset", as in MIUI). I will not dwell on the shell in detail, it was recently written about in reviews or.

The upper curtain with notifications seems to be the same as everyone else's. But in Huawei devices, it can traditionally be pushed out without touching the screen, but by swiping from top to bottom on the fingerprint scanner. And tap on it to clear the read notifications in this curtain. Personally, this solution seems very convenient to me: every time you switch from a Huawei smartphone to another device with the same rear-mounted scanner, at first you curse about a function that is not working. A number of types of special notifications that are irrelevant for our market are supported: emergency situations, "serious danger", AMBER alert and non-deactivated (!) "Presidential notifications". It is interesting how often the latter come to smartphone owners in his homeland.

Another feature of the device is unlocking by face recognition. The trend set in the iPhone X has already reached the two hundred dollar segment. This function works quite stably and at any angle, that is, you can hold the phone upside down, the main thing is that the face falls into the frame of the front camera. But recognition does not always happen instantly, you need to get used to it. If you grimace, the face is not recognized. I do not have a twin brother, it was not possible to verify this aspect of security.

What about the camera?

As we already understood, the main camera is single. Its matrix is 13-megapixel, while the front-facing sensor has an 8 MP sensor. Both cameras are equipped with flashes (both are also single); for those who like self-portraits, the presence of a backlight on the front panel is a clear plus. There is also a "perfect selfie" function for them. In this mode, you can correct the face oval, eye size and lighting parameters. In my opinion, a good way to make yourself look like an alien, nothing more. There is already a traditional setting for correcting skin defects (called "decoration mode") and stickers ("watermark") with the date, place, weather or any other pictures, which are now proudly called "augmented reality elements". The shooting interface is quite simple, it does not spoil the abundance of functions. The maximum video resolution is FullHD, there is no slow motion mode. I didn't find a time-lapse either, but there is a panorama.
