The Dvizhok magazine found out what the leading tire manufacturers have prepared for the upcoming winter season 2016/2017. As it turned out, not all manufacturers update their product line every year, so we are only interested in new items or tires that have undergone modernization.

Bridgestone

The Japanese tire company has released a new spike model, the Blizzak Spike-02, for this winter. The new tires differ from the tires of the previous generation - Spike-01 - by the so-called "directional" studs with an extended edge and a more reliable fastening system. In addition, the Japanese changed the composition of the rubber compound to prevent the tires from hardening in severe frosts, and also adopted a new V-shaped tread pattern. In terms of driving performance, the new model, compared to the Blizzak Spike-01, is distinguished by improved braking properties and wear resistance.

At first, Bridgestone Blizzak Spike-02 tires will be produced in 30 standard sizes with landing diameters from 13 to 18 inches, with a profile height from 40 to 70. By the 2017/2018 season, the company promises to release a version for SUVs and crossovers. This year, Bridgestone has also released a new studded model Noranza 001, but these tires are not supplied to the Russian market.

Continental

The Continental company, which is part of the concern of the same name, this season, the main "combat units" remained the same as last winter: it is a studded tire IceContact 2 and non-studded ContiVikingContact 6 (pictured). Both models have been modernized: they received, in particular, an expanded range of standard sizes and versions with proprietary puncture resistance technologies - SSR and ContiSeal.

IceContact 2 tires are available in 2016-2017 in 112 sizes for passenger cars and crossovers. When creating tires, the ContiSilent technology is also used, which, thanks to a layer of special foam, significantly reduces tire noise. In addition, IceContact 2 tires are manufactured using a proprietary studding system, in which the studs are coated with a special adhesive compound that acts like a strong glue during vulcanization. The ContiVikingContact 6 tires are available this winter in 97 sizes for passenger cars, as well as SUVs and crossovers.

Cordiant

The Russian tire company Cordiant has upgraded the Snow Cross studded tires for the 2016/2017 season and released their version for SUVs. In the 2016 modification, the tires received Finnish Spike-Cor spikes. The weight of the new studs has been significantly reduced by an aluminum body and an octagonal tungsten carbide tungsten carbide insert. Finnish studs, as well as a new rubber compound, are said to have significantly improved the tires' grip on ice.

In 2016, Cordiant Snow Cross tires began to be produced in 25 new sizes for wheels with rim diameters of 14-18 inches. In addition, the company launched the Snow Cross SUV for SUVs and crossovers, available in 13 sizes ranging from 16 to 18 inches.

Dunlop

Dunlop has presented two new products for this winter. Both are non-studded.

The Winter Maxx WM02 is a lightweight tire that replaces the WM01. According to the manufacturer, the rubber compound created using the 4D Nano Design technology has increased resistance to aging, the braking distance on ice is reduced by 12%, compared to the previous generation tires, the grip of the tire on icy surfaces is improved due to greater the number of lamellas. Winter Maxx WM02 tires are available in 91 sizes from 135/80 R13 to 245/40 R19.

For Central European conditions with relatively mild winters, Dunlop has launched the Winter Sport 5 SUV this year (pictured). The tires, as the manufacturer assures, have high adhesion properties on wet asphalt and slippery surfaces, and also better than Dunlop tires of previous generations, "cling" to both packed and loose snow. The Winter Sport 5 SUV is sold in 14 sizes, covering, according to Dunlop, about 50% of the European SUV and crossover market.

Gislaved

The Swedish brand has released two new models for the 2016/2017 season: the SoftFrost 200 friction tires and the NordFrost 200 studded tires (pictured). The “200th” SoftFrost differs from the previous generation tire by its asymmetric directional tread pattern. Its outer part is "responsible" for handling, the inner part - for traction on different types of winter surfaces, as well as for the quick removal of water and snow slurry from the contact patch.

Together with a soft rubber compound, the new pattern, according to the manufacturer, has improved the traction and braking characteristics of the tire, as well as lateral grip and handling on ice, snow and wet asphalt in comparison with the previous model. The new NordFrost 200 tires, according to the manufacturer, have improved handling, braking and traction on ice; in addition, the new tires are characterized by increased wear resistance. The tire tread pattern has become directional asymmetric.

In addition, the new Gislaved has received ultra-light spikes with a special shape of a carbide tip, significantly improving the dynamic performance of the new product on ice compared to the previous generation tires. NordFrost 200 tires are manufactured using a new rubber compound that retains "grip" and elasticity in severe frosts.

Goodyear

Goodyear has unveiled its UltraGrip Ice SUV friction tires for the new winter season, created, as the model name suggests, specifically for crossovers and SUVs.

The tires are based on IceGrip rubber compound, which is designed to work in arctic temperatures. Thanks to it, the company says, the tires remain flexible even in extreme cold. In the shoulder area of \u200b\u200bthe tread, a sipe blocking system is used, which improves the vehicle's handling when driving at high speeds. The tire design ensures optimal pressure distribution in the contact patch, which also has a beneficial effect on the level of traction. UltraGrip Ice SUV tires are also equipped with a “snowflake” wear indicator, which makes it easy to check the tire wear level against the background of the tread pattern. In addition, Goodyear has expanded the Goodyear UltraGrip Ice 2 friction tire range to 32 sizes.

Hankook

The main novelty from the Korean brand Hankook in the 2016/2017 season is the non-studded Winter i * Cept iZ² model of the so-called Scandinavian type (for severe winters and icy roads).

The directional tread pattern of the new tires is made in the likeness of the Siberian husky paws, in addition, the company has applied a proprietary patented technology of three-dimensional sipes - to improve traction, braking properties and handling. A specially developed silicon-containing compound allows you to maintain the elasticity of the tread, even at extremely low temperatures.

The Winter i * cept iZ² tires are initially available in 50 sizes: diameter from 13 to 19 inches, with profile heights from 35 to 70 and tread widths from 175 to 255 mm, with T and Q speed ratings. Some models are available in versions with increased load capacity. In addition, Hankook has redesigned the Winter i * cept evo2 with new sizes for sports cars and SUVs.

245/50 R18 H * RSC tires are available for OE on BMW 7 Series sedans. For mid-range vehicles such as the VW Passat and Touran, tires with SealGuard technology are available for the first time. A special sealant is pumped into the latter, which tightens punctures up to 5 mm in diameter in the tire tread area.

The Winter i * cept evo2 model (pictured on the right) is now available in versions with a landing diameter of 16-20 inches with a tread width of 195-295 mm and a tire-to-width ratio of 30-60 with speed ratios H, V and W. Mostly the line includes models of increased load capacity (Extra-Load - XL). Hankook SealGuard technology is used in the winter 2016 tires with dimensions 215/60 R16 H and 215/55 R17 V. The size range Winter i * cept evo2 SUV is represented by tires with a landing diameter of 16-22 inches with a tread width of 215-295 mm and a profile 30-70 with speed ratios from T to W.

Kumho

Another manufacturer from the Country of Morning Freshness - Kumho - also presented two new tires for the new season: friction and studded.

The non-studded High Performance WinterCraft WP71 is aimed at owners of powerful cars. The tires, according to the company, hold the road well both on wet and dry surfaces, and are also highly durable. The special 3D sipes provide increased traction on snow and ice. Tires are produced in 42 standard sizes, speed indices - H (210 km / h), V (240 km / h) and W (270 km / h).

Studded tires for SUVs and crossovers WinterCraft SUV ice WS31 (pictured) received a new rubber compound, as well as an improved stud configuration in 20 lines. The lamellas in the tread are located asymmetrically, which improves the traction properties of tires on various types of winter surfaces. Besides, new model outperforms older brand tires in terms of handling and braking performance on ice. The WinterCraft SUV ice WS31 model is produced in 14 standard sizes, speed indices - T (190 km) and H (210 km / h).

Matador

According to the press service of the manufacturing company, the new MP30 Sibir Ice 2 studded tire has received a number of model features from the "senior" brands of the Continental concern, and the tire's technical characteristics have been improved in eight main indicators of the car's behavior on ice and snow.

In particular, the symmetrical directional tread pattern with two central longitudinal ribs improved handling and directional stability. Large blocks with increased number of traction edges provide increased grip on snow, and their V-shaped arrangement allows you to quickly drain water and slurry from the contact patch.

The new model also received lightweight double-flanged ED "eco-thorns" with a round carbide tip, due to which the car on the new tires demonstrates confident behavior on ice and snow. The studs have increased wear resistance throughout their entire service life.

Michelin

Michelin has introduced winter tires for passenger cars and crossovers in new sizes for the 2016/2017 season. In particular, the Michelin Latitude X-Ice North 2+ studded tires (pictured), designed for different types SUVs and crossovers are now available in sizes 245/55 R19, 275/50 R20, 295/40 R20, 265/40 R21, 295/40 R21. For the renowned Italian tire manufacturer, the main novelty of this season is the studless Cinturato Winter tires, which replaced the SnowControl Serie 3.

Tires belong to the European class "Touring" and are intended for all countries where seasonal tire change is legally fixed - Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, as well as for Eastern Europe. Note that Scandinavian countries are not included in this list - residents of the northern regions of Russia should take note of this.

Which winter tires to buy? This is a tricky question given the huge selection on the tire market and the many brands available. But a huge number of offers, although it makes the final product better, does not guarantee a direct hit on the target when buying a new winter kit. And, of course, if when buying a verified old model you can focus on your own experience, on the reviews of friends and acquaintances, responses on various Internet resources. But if you want to buy a novelty of the season?

How to choose winter tires?

On the tire market, many models are presented throughout the whole year and, I must say, manufacturers skillfully hide the shortcomings of certain new products. But still, how to determine whether the model will be successful in the future? Let's try to rank the arguments in favor of the success of this or that model from higher to lower priority.

2. The quality of the model to be replaced. If, for example, Gislaved Euro * Frost 5 tires were decent, then Euro * Frost 6 should not be worse. As a rule, the new model is not worse than the previous one.

3. Results of preliminary tests from independent experts. Many manufacturers publish the results of examinations before they start selling tires. It is worth thinking about the quality of those models that do not pass the examination. The most authoritative of the expert organizations are TUV SUD and Dekra.

When choosing a new product, the client receives several advantages at once:

  • The novelty is always fresh, it is only several months old.
  • The quality of the first batches is often slightly higher than the subsequent ones, as the manufacturer realizes that the first tires sold will set the tone for sales for many years.
  • New items are usually made with the latest technology. Yes, in the tire industry this is not a significant advantage, but it should not be ignored.
  • The novelty will be on sale for many more years, so in the event of a puncture or other kind of damage, the buyer can easily replace the model.

New items for the winter season 2017-2018

Premium segment

Bridgestone Blizzak Spike-02 is a winter tire with studs. Bridgestone is not very famous for its winter fizzy products, however, the company recently acquired a new landfill in Ivalo, Finland to improve its winter production. The results of preliminary tests are quite positive, which makes you think about buying a model, given that analogues are much more expensive (for example, Nokian Hakapelita 9).

Bridgestone Blizzak VRX 2 - the successor to the legendary VRX, which has proven itself so well in our country. The model does not differ much from the previous one in its frictional tread pattern (although there are changes here too). The main changes affected the composition of the rubber. Wear resistance characteristics have been significantly increased.

Bridgestone Blizzak LM001 Evo - tires with directional pattern, but without studding. Something between Velcro and a studded tire. Its previous variation was not entirely successful, so the changes affected everything - from the tread pattern to the compound. According to the designers, the changes should impress lovers of driving on loose snow.

Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 - a promising winter model, the heir to the legendary four from which she inherited the directional pattern. However, the designers added a central furrow to the drawing for closer contact with the snowy road. Without a doubt, the model will be excellent, although, like all products of the French concern, expensive.

Michelin X-Ice 3 XI3 Plus - full analogs of XI3, if you pay attention only to the protector. All innovations have affected the rubber cocktail. The tires are made for a versatile ride. The model is good both on asphalt and on icy surfaces.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 - continuation of the legendary line from the Finnish manufacturer. The developer has made even more innovations in the stud by making it from two types of studs. Nevertheless, the number of spikes was reduced in comparison with the eight, since many did not like the abundance of these elements in the eight. The model is worth more than attention.

Middle price segment

Gislaved Euro * Frost 6 / General Altimax Winter 3 / Viking WinTech - three identical models from brands owned by the German Continental. The German manufacturer himself did not present anything new for the winter 2017-2018, limiting himself to the products of its sub-brands. The model has a directional pattern with a large number of lamellas. Unambiguously high-quality products, taking into account the real German quality and previous works of the factories.
