And this does not mean that this frequency is very bad, on the contrary - it has a wider range than the same 5 GHz. At the expense of 5 GHz, this is a newer standard with high bandwidth, but a smaller radius.

The 2.4 GHz frequency has 13 channels. There are 11 of them on American models, but this is the specifics of the legislation. Frequency 12 and 13 are prohibited in the USA. We have a little more space in this regard. The urgent need to change the canal arises among the residents of apartment buildings. When there are too many routers on the same frequency and everyone is actively using network resources, the waves cross and the end client receives incorrect information packets with errors.

According to the manufacturer, the router itself looks for a free channel and connects to it, but in fact, not all models do everything right.

How to find and select a free channel?

To get started, try not downloading anything, but just restart your Keenetic. In theory, he should select a free frequency and connect to it. But if you are wondering what channels your neighbors are on, then I would recommend two programs: inSSIDer and WiFiInfoView.

inSSIDer

We need a column "CHANNEL" that will show the occupied zones. As you can see, in my case, my old router does not know how to choose and took the busiest channel. To the left you can see the signal strength, which depends on the standard and on the antenna gain power. By the way, on some models the gain level can be reduced - this is useful in small apartments.

The frequency column is followed by the encryption type, followed by the MAC address of the router and the type of standard used. I have combined "b, g, n" in the settings, but my router chose the g standard. Write in the comments which channels your neighbors have occupied - it is interesting to conduct a little statistics, therefore. If you see, for example, the value "1 + 5", then this means the router has a dual band "20-40MHz" enabled. And if you include just 20, then there will be only one value like mine.

What is the operating mode of all routers? In routers, automatic channel selection settings are most often initially set. In most cases, the operation of a router in these conditions is perfectly acceptable. However, there are situations when it is necessary to change the channel manually and enter the necessary data.

This is how the TP-Link router configuration (automatic) looks like:

In the highlighted line, you can change the automatic mode to manual. To do this, just change the value of the "Channel" section.
Such channel selection is necessary when there are many networks in the house and access points are too close to each other.

  • wi-Fi speed drops significantly;
  • communication between the device and the access point is interrupted;
  • the signal remains strong, but no connection is made at a distance from the router.

Let's consider changing the frequency of a wifi channel using the example of DIR-300 NRU. go to the settings of the D-Link router.
