Which is better s8 or iphone 7. Design, body materials, dimensions. Built-in memory sizes and prices

From spring 2017 until the end of summer, the main battle in the smartphone market will take place between the newest flagship Samsung's Galaxy S8 and iPhone 7 from Apple.

How good is the Galaxy S8's new 5.8-inch infinity screen compared to the iPhone's modest 4.7-inch display? Which of the two 12MP cameras will show more impressive results? Which smartphone keeps a charge longer? Let's find out with the PhoneArena experts.

Design

The Galaxy S8 looks much more impressive, but the iPhone 7 is more practical, and they both fit perfectly in the hand.

Samsung went for unprecedented boldness in the process of creating the Galaxy S8, ditching the familiar hardware Home button and the flat-screen version of the flagship. This is why the 5.8-inch Galaxy S8 is just an inch longer than the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 and is about the same in width - so smartphones are comparable in terms of grip. Due to their compact size, these two devices are among the most convenient smartphones in the top segment for "one-handed" use, you can easily reach with your thumb almost anywhere on their screen. However, you will need to grip the taller Galaxy S8 in your hand from time to time to pop the notification shade from the top of the screen, for example.

The 5.8-inch screen on the Galaxy S8 has a very unusual 18.5: 9 aspect ratio. It follows from the laws of geometry that the screen area is slightly smaller than it would be for a 5.8-inch display with a standard 16: 9 ratio. However, it is still much larger than the iPhone 7, so more text and other information will fit on such a screen, but when watching games and videos in 16: 9 format, blank black bars will remain on the sides of the screen. Alternatively, so that there are no black bars, you can enter the video (stretch out of proportion), or increase it proportionally, but losing some of the information above and below, which will be outside the screen.

Both phones use Gorilla Glass and metal in their designs - the Galaxy S8 is more glossy but prone to cracking if dropped, while the iPhone 7 looks less pretentious but is more durable. If the Galaxy S8 slips out of your hand and falls onto its glass back, it's much more likely to get ugly damage than the iPhone, as its aluminum back will be slightly bent at worst, and numerous drop tests show this.

To facilitate the transition from a physical home button to a virtual one, Samsung engineers have added a pressure-sensitive area at the bottom of the screen. The tactile feel is similar to the Force Touch ID button in the iPhone 7. In fact, tactile feedback when pressing the button is not a vital necessity, and most Android smartphones with on-screen keys have demonstrated this for a long time, so we will consider the pressure-sensitive area Galaxy S8 screen is a nice bonus. The physical buttons on the sides of both smartphones are easy to touch and have a pleasant pressing force. Apple has a separate mute switch, while Samsung has equipped the S8 with a dedicated button to launch its new virtual assistant called Bixby.

Screen

A much larger screen in only a slightly elongated body? A strong trump card. But the iPhone 7 screen has no shortcomings of AMOLED matrix and problems with 16: 9 content.

To achieve the new 2: 1 aspect ratio (or so) Samsung equipped the S8 with a curved "WQHD +" screen with rounded edges. The display occupies almost the entire front panel of the smartphone, its diagonal is 5.8 inches, and the resolution is 2960x1440 pixels, which is why it has a plus sign in its name. The S8's screen resolution can be changed, the default is 1080p, but in the settings you can always move the slider all the way to the right and get the full potential of the screen resolution for VR goggles or whatever. The iPhone 7 has a 4.7-inch IPS screen that offers good viewing angles and wide color gamut (DCI-P3), so photos taken with the iPhone camera (which also supports the P3 profile) have a wider range of colors.

In terms of image quality, the S8's display is a typical AMOLED display - with oversaturated colors in Adaptive Mode on by default that go beyond the standard sRGB range, and white that turns bluish at the slightest tilt of the phone. If you set the display to the most color-accurate Primary Mode, you'll still notice a pronounced cool bias when you look at the display even from a slight angle. The iPhone 7 screen has a more natural color reproduction, and the color temperature does not shift as dramatically at an angle.

However, Amoled displays also have obvious advantages - thanks to the ability of the pixels to self-glow, absolutely black color and extremely high contrast are achieved. In addition, the smartphone is extremely economical in using the battery when watching movies, and in standby mode, hours can be displayed on the screen, and this will consume the battery to a minimum.

The S8 display is Mobile HDR Premium certified, so you can watch new UHD movies shot in the P3 color space in Cinema mode as intended by their creators. The catch, however, is that you'll have to search for relevant content yourself, as neither Netflix nor Amazon Video supports the Galaxy S8 as a compatible device for this type of video. To achieve the HDR10 standard, Samsung had to noticeably increase the peak brightness of its Amoled panels, which, combined with the low reflectivity of the screen, allows for excellent visibility in the sun in auto brightness mode, and this is perhaps a much more beneficial benefit from HDR certification. The iPhone 7 display is also very bright (max 600 nits), so it also offers good outdoor readability.

Interface

We've reviewed the iOS 10 interface on the iPhone 7 and Samsung skins a number of times, so today we'll be focusing on the new features. Compared to the Galaxy S7, updated to Andoid 7 Nougat, the icons in the Galaxy S8 interface have changed - they have become more uniform and minimalistic, but in fact these are just decorations, since all settings and internal menus have remained almost identical. But that's not bad either.

Samsung has added some new handy gestures. For example, you can swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open the installed apps section, or swipe down on the fingerprint reader to pop up the notification shade. On the iPhone 7, connection switches and other commonly used settings are found in the Control Center, which is located at the bottom of the screen and slides out from the bottom up, making it much easier than trying to reach the top edge of the screen with your finger in Android.

Apple iOS 10 interface in iPhone 7

The Samsung smartphone, as usual, is crammed with a bunch of all sorts of functions that you may or may not use, such as recognition of the iris of the eye, which in addition to the fingerprint has become another way to unlock the smartphone. Sounds cool, but it cannot be said that it is faster or more convenient than scanning your fingers or entering a PIN. Apple also sometimes adds functions that have not managed to prove their daily necessity, just remember the 3D Touch screen, but in the new Samsung user interface, as in the old TouchWiz, there are many times more of them, and some of them may seem redundant. The end result is that you get more functionality with a Samsung phone, but the interface itself is a little slower and apps take slightly longer to open than on iOS.

Some of Samsung's additional options since the release of 7.0 Nougat have already appeared in Android itself, such as split-screen multitasking or power management features, but new exclusive features have also been added. For example, Samsung claims that the new virtual assistant Bixby (for which they even allocated a separate button on the end of the smartphone) will be much better than Siri in terms of speech recognition and language support, but its full functionality will become available later, and at the moment it simply duplicates Google Assistant. ...

Processor and memory

Galaxy S8 is equipped with the latest processors - the US and China version is equipped with the Snapdragon 835 chipset, for the rest of the markets the smartphone is based on the Exynos 8895. Both chipsets demonstrate record performance in benchmarks and even encroach on the iPhone 7 and its A10 chip. In addition, the Samsung smartphone has 4 GB of RAM, but, as we already mentioned, the Samsung interface is heavier than iOS, and no one has canceled the issues of optimization and interaction with the system core, so in practice these bare numbers do not translate into clearly the best Galaxy S8 performance. compared to the iPhone 7, the Samsung smartphone even lags behind in some complex graphics tasks.

This year Samsung has equipped its flagship with 64GB of internal storage and hasn't forgotten about the microSD card slot, while the Apple smartphone is available in several editions with 32, 128 or 256 GB of non-expandable memory.

Camera

Galaxy S8 excels in low light and continuous focus

Samsung has installed the same camera in the Galaxy S8 as in the Galaxy S7, at least on paper it looks like this - a 12-megapixel sensor with Dual Pixel technology. The camera uses new models of sensors from Sony or Samsung, in addition, the front selfie camera has been improved and has become an 8-megapixel autofocus camera. The iPhone 7 also has a 12-megapixel main camera, but with a smaller sensor and pixels; this means that, all other things being equal, its performance in low light conditions will be worse as it will catch less light.

Samsung has greatly simplified the camera app interface, with only the most frequently used functions on the home screen now, just like on the iPhone, while numerous shooting modes and effects are available after swiping left / right. The front camera interface has become richer, now you can add bunny ears, sunglasses and other fun elements over your photos and videos. When it comes to photo shooting speed, both smartphones are in the lead, but with a slight advantage to the Galaxy S8 as Dual Pixel technology is best in class in terms of speed and focusing accuracy.

Apple iPhone 7 camera interface

The iPhone camera shoots in an extended color range, and these photos can be viewed directly on the smartphone display, or shared with other iPhone 7/7 Plus users. In bright sunny weather, iPhone 7 photos often have a warmer color gamut than those of the S8, but sometimes the roles change, and the Galaxy S8 photos come out unnecessarily warm and fuzzy.

However, if you look at the test photos, it is the images of the iPhone 7 that have an unnatural warm tint to the point that the clouds turn yellow. To be honest, we are not big fans of this vision of the world. In the same scenarios, Galaxy S8 photos tend to look more authentic, albeit not perfect either due to the oversharpening and saturation, making the shots more impressive but giving them a somewhat artificial look. Both cameras capture enough detail and are excellent at handling tricky dynamic range scenes - arguably the best that tiny mobile camera sensors have to offer at the moment. Needless to say, fast processing and automatic HDR modes play an important role in this. In low light conditions, the Galaxy S8 shows some edge in terms of sharpness, better handling dark areas.

Let's move on to comparing video capabilities. The quality of 4K video recording differs markedly between smartphones, and the Apple smartphone, being one of the freshest flagships on the market, coped with UHD footage better than anyone else, producing very smooth video, free of artifacts, and without recording restrictions. With the release of the Galaxy S8, it has a worthy competitor, since the Samsung smartphone is also very strong in all of the above points, plus the Dual Pixel system, which uses the entire sensor for focusing, makes the transition from near objects to distant ones and vice versa fast and seamless. We're not saying the iPhone 7's autofocus is slow, it's just not nearly as smooth.

Both smartphones are capable of recording slow-motion video at 240 frames per second in HD resolution, which allows you to create mesmerizing effects.

Battery life

Both smartphones last a day, but Galaxy S8 charges much faster

The Galaxy S8 has a larger battery than the iPhone 7 (3000 mAh versus 1960 mAh), but it has a larger screen and higher resolution, which negatively affects battery life, so the smartphone showed a similar autonomy during our tests - 7 hours 30 minutes for the Snapdragon version versus 7 hours and 46 minutes for the iPhone 7. The Exynos-based Galaxy S8 lasted almost an hour longer. We measure battery life using a dedicated web script that emulates typical smartphone use. The screen brightness for all tested devices is set to 200 nits.

Thus, both smartphones will be enough for a working day, but it is unlikely that you can spend a weekend with them without an outlet. The Galaxy S8 takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes to fully charge, while the iPhone takes 2 hours and 20 minutes. The Galaxy S8 also supports wireless charging technology, and it is considered the fastest on the market - just two hours for a full charge from zero to 100 with a Samsung branded charger.

Conclusion

Notably different in terms of design, the Galaxy S8 and iPhone 7 are some of the most user-friendly flagship smartphones on the market, and by far the most popular. The Galaxy S8 offers an impressive screen that is curved at the sides and rounded at the edges, which takes up almost the entire front surface of the smartphone, but please note that standard 16: 9 videos and applications will display with black bars on the sides, stretch disproportionately, or be cut off.

However, the fact that the Galaxy S8 has a much larger display with a higher resolution and is only slightly larger than the iPhone 7 is an undeniable advantage. Another plus is its camera with a damn fast autofocus and excellent low-light capabilities. Apple iPhone 7, in turn, boasts a wider color gamut, stereo speakers, and a simpler and smoother interface with a richer ecosystem of applications and services.

Samsung Galaxy S8 advantages:

  • Impressive design with record-breaking screen-to-body ratio
  • Fast charging, both wired and wireless
  • Higher screen resolution, HDR certified
  • Functional interface

Apple iPhone 7 advantages:

  • Very comfortable for one-handed use
  • All games and videos support the standard 16: 9 display aspect ratio
  • Richer ecosystem of applications and services
  • Stereo speakers

Given the comparable price, for many who are looking to buy a new phone today, the striking and unique design of the Galaxy S8 could be a deciding factor. At least, it will be so until the release of the new iPhone in the fall.

September 2016 was a special year for all fans of Apple products: the company presented an update to the famous iPhone. The smartphone has undergone significant changes and was presented as a fundamentally new solution. The phone received an improved processor, camera and updated colors "" and "". Users from all over the world are still interested in the question: will the new product from Apple become the best among its competitors? Or still the first place will be given to the main competitor of “apple”, Samsung company with its innovation Galaxy S7.

It is not the first year that there has been a confrontation between two titans of electronics and their products. Only the iPhone 7 and Samsung are winning this battle for customer attention. Moreover, it is impossible to say unequivocally which company is the market leader. Samsung is literally stepping on the heels of the iPhone manufacturer. Perhaps, the new Galaxy does not lose at all in quality. It is not for nothing that in the past 2015, the Galaxy Note 5 was at its peak of popularity. Most likely, this was not in vain for Apple developers, since the new model became a real sensation in the smartphone market. In this article, we will compare Samsung Galaxy s7 vs iPhone 7 and finally find out who will be the favorite of the year.

Iphone 7 vs samsung galaxy s7: first impression

It is known that any technique is primarily evaluated in terms of functionality, but the design of the gadget plays an important role in the user's choice. For a very long time we have been watching how the design of new products from Samsung is changing. The developer approached the question of developing the appearance of the new Galaxy more than seriously. The S7 and S7 Edge line has deservedly received the title of the most aesthetically pleasing device.

It was the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge that received special sympathy for the metal case with 3D glass. However, one significant drawback of this solution should be noted: the back cover of the smartphone will collect all fingerprints. Apple has prepared an equally worthy response to competitors, opposing the strict curved body of the Galaxy.

For clarity, let's compare the characteristics of the screen and the appearance of the four flagship models in the form of a table:

Thus, we can objectively compare the four top gadgets in terms of the main parameters - these are diagonal, appearance, display, colors and resistance of display glass to mechanical damage.

As a result, there is no absolute leader in all parameters. The regular iPhone 7 is outperformed by the other three in screen diagonal, and the Samsung Galaxy s7 edge lacks scratch-resistant glass. This glass is also absent in the Jet Black iPhone series. And yet, more was expected from the screen of the new iPhone 7 model. Apple developers did not live up to these expectations, so the updated phone is only 25% brighter. In all other respects, the screen is no different from the screen of the sixth version. Against this background, the matrix and resolution of galactic smartphones looks like a real breakthrough. Therefore, in this round, the victory, of course, remains with Samsung.

What's inside? Comparison of performance and hardware

As for the performance of the two top models, for another 2-3 years, users can be sure that the devices will run all applications and games. The more important parameter is the smoothness of the operating system. It is known that the Samsung Galaxy s 7 is released on the basis of Android, the smoothness of which is inferior to iOS 10. While the South Korean engineers are working towards improving their own shell, while the victory remains with the iPhone manufacturer.

Speaking of processors, it should be noted that S7 / S7 Edge is available in two versions:

  • international - eight-core Exynos 8890, which is Samsung's own development;
  • quad-core Snapdragon 820 for China and USA.

According to Samsung, the processor in the Edge version is up to 30% more powerful and the graphics editor up to 64% faster than the previous Galaxy S7. received a processor with four cores A10 Fusion and a 64-bit system. Two processor cores are needed to compute complex tasks, and two more cores are needed for energy efficiency. As a result, the phone became twice as productive and five times more economical. In performance tests on one core, Samsung processors perform worse than A9, but outperform it in "multi-core" testing.

The new Samsung models have returned the microSD card with capacities up to 256GB. It turned out to be very handy, because S7 / S7 Edge came out in only one version of 32 GB. But Apple users do not even count on additional memory. In the new configuration, smartphones came out with memory of 32, 128 and 256 GB.

Additional characteristics of the "filling" of smartphones we can see in the table.

Click on the table to enlarge it

The table shows that Samsung has bypassed its rivals in battery capacity and the number of SIM cards. The lightest of the four models was the iPhone 7, and the heaviest iPhone 7 plus.

Comparison of audio video and photography

Let's start with an overview of audio connectors. The Samsung Galaxy has received a standard set of parameters, but the iPhone has some changes. The manufacturers decided to abandon the mini Jack, as it allowed to increase the battery capacity and place the Taptic Engine vibration motor.

Comparing cameras is one of the most important and interesting parameters. Many users, when choosing a new smartphone, pay close attention to the photographic possibilities of a potential purchase. And with the advent of social networks, Periscope and Instagram, mobile photography and video shooting have become an integral part of our lives. That is why the manufacturers of both Samsung and iPhone have paid maximum attention to this parameter.

There are undoubtedly huge expectations from the top models of these companies. Let's see who takes better pictures: iPhone 7 vs Samsung Galaxy s7?

Let's start with Samsung models. The flagship S7 and S7 Edge have been praised by experts for their camera performance. Indeed, the 12-megapixel camera with the new Dual Pixel technology, similar to professional DSLRs, delivers great results in low-light environments. And the novelty also shows the possibility of optical image stabilization, and the number of complex manual modes will delight even the most demanding mobile photographer. Included flagships from Samsung received support for macro WDR, as well as support for RAW-format. The aperture (the degree of opening of the aperture) with a value of f / 1.7 became the record indicator among its fellows. An insignificant but interesting change was the camera's position in the body. In the previous model, it protruded by 1, 4 mm, in the new model - only by 0, 46 mm.

Comparison of cameras iPhone 7 and 7 Plus

In order to compare cameras Samsung s7 and iPhone, you should initially tell what differences exist between the two "brother" models.

Click on the photo to enlarge it

Both the iPhone 7 and the Plus version have 12MP cameras, but the regular version has one lens, while the iPhone 7 Plus has a dual lens camera. It should be noted that the energy efficiency has increased by almost 30%, the speed has increased by 60%, and the lens absorbs 50% more light than the lens of the sixth version. It should also be said that both sevens received optical image stabilization, an f / 1.7 aperture, a six-lens lens, flash and autofocus.

The differences between the models are reflected in some parameters of photo and video shooting. In photography, the iPhone 7 with 5x digital zoom is inferior to its more sophisticated sibling, the Plus version with 2x optical zoom and 10x digital. There are also some differences when shooting videos. Version seven has 3x digital zoom, and version seven plus has 6x digital and 2x optical.

Water and dust resistant

No matter how careful, attentive and pedantic the user is, it is impossible to guarantee 100% safety of his electronic assistant from the external environment. Therefore, moisture resistance and dust resistance are very important parameters. Let's take a look and analyze how the manufacturers Samsung S7 vs iPhone 7 took care of the safety of their offspring.

The new apple product has received resistance in accordance with the IP67 standard. In simple terms, the phone's designers guarantee complete and dust-free and safe immersion in water up to one meter deep. But still, pay attention that the advertisement shows only the resistance of the gadget to rain, so we advise you to carefully study the instructions attached to the purchase.

But Samsung engineers certified their device according to the newer IP68 standard. The standard fully inherits the level of security of its predecessor, but the immersion depth is already one and a half meters with a period of up to half an hour.

Research result

Based on everything studied and stated above, it is impossible to say unequivocally who is categorically better: iPhone 7 vs Galaxy S7? Indeed, both companies have delighted their fans with the release of new high quality products. Performance has increased, cameras with excellent parameters have appeared, protection from moisture and dust, and a new attractive design.

The only major difference is operating systems. Summing up, it should be noted that the question of choosing between the two options is rather a question of commitment to a particular company, its policies and support. And the best solution would be to choose your electronic assistant solely from your own needs, capabilities and priorities.

Comparison of flagships has already become a kind of tradition, especially since the choice in the upper price segment is limited by Apple and Samsung, other companies and their products only emphasize this, their sales do not even reach a couple of percent of what the two main brands sell on the smartphone market. Having explained why we are comparing these two brands, it's time to say why three devices are involved in the comparison and they formally belong to different generations. The difference in generations is due to the fact that between the release of devices from Samsung and Apple about six months, that is, the iPhone 7 is the newest device on the market. If they came out at the same time, and then the comparison would be more interesting, since their sales would be synchronized in time, but this does not happen. The next generation Galaxy S8 will be released in February, while the iPhone 8 will have another full year. In my opinion, this question should be of concern to pedants or those who have been using the Galaxy S7 / S7 EDGE for some time and want to see what they came up with in the iPhone 7 that is not in their devices.

Since the Galaxy S7 / S7 EDGE are actually the same phone, but with different screen sizes, at first glance, you need to compare with the iPhone 7 the younger model - the usual S7. They have comparable case sizes, while the S7 EDGE is noticeably larger, it rather plays against the iPhone 7 Plus. But in terms of cost, these models are comparable, since it is the S7 EDGE that costs about the same as the iPhone 7, and the S7 is cheaper. Therefore, in comparison, there are two devices from Samsung, since many people do not proceed only and not so much from the screen size, but try to find the best option in terms of price / quality ratio.

Before moving on to the comparison, an important caveat must be made. This material deliberately does not assess the value of certain parameters, since we are all very different in our perception of the world and our needs. Someone thinks that a phone without wireless charging is yesterday, and does not even consider such devices, someone, on the contrary, considers it pampering and denies the need for such technology. This buyer's guide provides all the small and significant details, but you can prioritize yourself by choosing what is best for you. Since each person is unique, your priorities will be completely different from those of other readers, which means that your choice will be unique in many ways. Go!

Design, body materials, dimensions

All markers are different in taste and color, so it makes no sense to discuss the appearance of models, someone likes one thing, someone else. For example, Galaxy S7 EDGE is unique with beveled edges of the screen, no other company has analogues for such a solution, the phone can be recognized from afar, which is a rarity these days. But the downside of this appearance is that the ergonomics of the solution suffers a little, there are accidental presses on these edges of the screen, and not everyone will like it. To some extent, this was a compromise in S7 EDGE.

Now a few words about the case materials - the iPhone uses an aluminum alloy, and these are not only the side edges, but also the entire rear surface, on which you can see the inserts for the antennas.

In Samsung, the back wall is made of glass, it is Corning Gorilla Glass 4. In fact, all Galaxy colors play in the light, shimmer, and this is the advantage of using glass. At the same time, unlike metal, they are easily soiled, and handprints easily remain on them. But in everyday life it is not annoying, not too noticeable.

Apple's response to this was the addition of the Jet Black color (in Russia it is called Black Onyx). It is a polished metal that is very close to Samsung's glass panels. Of the minuses, I note that it is exactly the same smudges, but also scratches easily, so Apple recommends using a protective case for it. Why do you need a beautiful case if you need to immediately hide it in a case? I do not know.

The metal chassis in the Galaxy is made just from 7000 series aluminum, that is, there is a certain parity here. Overall, in terms of the materials used in the construction, both the iPhone and the Galaxy are in the top league in the phone market and are the best you can find.

Previously, the iPhone used sapphire crystal for the camera window and fingerprint sensor, which made scratches virtually impossible. In the iPhone 7, the use of sapphire glass was abandoned, and this is a drawback compared to previous generations. Many people have shown in practice that these glasses are scratched. Another thing is that it won't be easy to do it anyway. In Samsung, the camera glass is originally from Corning, it is difficult to scratch it, here is par. But the fingerprint sensor is covered with plastic, and you use it dozens of times every day. As a result, within six months it wears out and starts to look untidy.

In the iPhone of previous generations, because of the sapphire, nothing like this has ever happened, what will happen with the iPhone 7 is not clear, but since there is glass, it is unlikely that it will come to a state similar to the sensor on the S7 / S7 EDGE. This is a weak point for Samsung.

Another weak point is the speaker grille in color schemes, where it is painted black. This grille also peeled off for me, exposing the white metal.

And if with the iPhone we can say that the painting of the metal is excellent, and the abrasion even after two years looks so that it is hardly noticeable, then in the Galaxy individual elements become a weak point. And this is a problem that spreads across several generations of devices.

Now a few words about the protective glass that covers the screen in these models. Samsung has historically used Corning Gorilla Glass to secure the supply of this key component for screens, and even bought a portion of Corning. Apple uses tempered mineral glass and no changes were made in the seventh generation. As a result, an iPhone that falls from the same height onto the asphalt or hard surface, for example, from the belt, is usually shattered. Replacing the screen is one of the most expensive operations and is more likely to be done here than with the Galaxy. Therefore, if you feel or know that the likelihood of dropping the phone from your hands is high, you need to use protective cases, they save the devices, but spoil their appearance. With Samsung, this need is not as urgent as with the iPhone.

It's time to dwell on the size of the phones. There are many people in the world who believe that the smaller the phone, the better. They just don't need big screens, at least until they try them, after which it becomes impossible to return to the old small screens. But in terms of its compactness, the iPhone 7 is one of the best on the market. Its dimensions are 138.8x67.1x7.1 mm, weight - 138 grams. It fits perfectly in the hand, even too small for a man's hand.

The size of the Galaxy S7 is slightly larger, and this is with a noticeably larger screen size (0.4 inches in life is a striking difference). The dimensions of the phone are 142.4x69.6x7.9 mm, the weight is 152 grams. But S7 EDGE belongs to the category of phablets, it is not so compact, although it is one of the smallest in its class - 150.9x72.6x7.7 mm, weight 157 grams. Note that the larger size and weight also correlates with the larger battery size in the Galaxy lineup (3000 and 3600 mAh respectively). In general, both phones are larger than the iPhone 7, but here you need to start from your habits. In my opinion, all models are comfortable in everyday life, and the iPhone 7 is too small for me with a screen.

Water and dust resistant

I specially highlighted this moment separately so that it does not get lost in the text. Previously, protection against water was only in flagships from Samsung, now this option has also been added to the iPhone. The iPhone 7 is IP67, while the Galaxy is IP68. Despite the difference, in everyday life, it is important to know one thing that both the one and the other apparatus will not sink, especially if you quickly get them out of the water. In both cases, the protection function is well implemented.

Display

In recent years, two trends have formed, some - the witnesses of Pentile - know for sure that on AMOLED screens with QHD resolution, their eyes see individual points, others laugh at them and call them human microscopes. The iPhone has always used high-quality IPS matrices, which were above the market average, but the lag behind Samsung's AMOLED displays was clearly noticeable in a number of situations, for example, in bright sunlight. It was also affected by the fact that the screen size on the iPhone is smaller. From the point of view of the screen diagonal, nothing has changed, it is 4.7 inches versus 5.1 / 5.5 inches. But technologically, the screen in the iPhone 7 has been greatly changed and pulled up to the level of AMOLED screens from Samsung, in practice this is an almost impossible task, nevertheless, the display supplier's engineers solved it for Apple. Moreover, it should be noted that a head-on comparison of screens will show that each has its own strengths and weaknesses, which follows from the very technology of their production. But for the first time in the history of the iPhone, its screen in terms of color rendering, behavior in the sun, correct color rendering, maximum brightness in the sun is close or comparable to Samsung's AMOLED screens. There is parity between these products.

Traditionally, I want to refer to a detailed study of screens from Display Mate, in which those who wish can look at graphs, measurements and the like.

All other things being equal, the difference remains both in the diagonal of the screen and in the resolution. In the iPhone, the resolution is traditionally lower, this is done to optimize the performance of the device - 1334x750 pixels, while in the S7 / S7 EDGE it is 2560x1440 pixels. It is clear that a higher resolution is better for most tasks, if it does not affect the runtime and performance of the solution.

Now there is one more thing that strongly distinguishes these devices. In Samsung, the use of an AMOLED screen allows you to create an AlwaysON function, the display constantly displays information such as hours, messages, calls. Or your wallpaper. That is, the phone turns from a dead black screen into something working. It is difficult to underestimate this feature, as your device looks always working, and this practically does not affect the battery.

Another option is to automatically adjust the backlight to suit your preferences. For the first two weeks, the phone evaluates how you use it, what kind of backlighting you prefer. And it adjusts itself specifically for you, it becomes clearly visible after a few days. It would seem a trifle, but this intelligent system allows you to achieve a lot.

I also want to note that the number of display settings is traditionally higher in Samsung, you can customize the device for yourself as comfortably as possible. The iPhone is much simpler, and there is no flexibility in settings.

Camera

This is another area that Apple used to be content with above average for most smartphones, but worse than Galaxy. For the seven, the camera was greatly redesigned, and plus or minus it became comparable to the current generation Galaxy with one difference, in the evening the S7 / S7 EDGE is filmed a little better. Traditionally, there are no manual settings for the iPhone, the “point and shoot” interface, which is not suitable for everyone, since the automatic machine does not allow drawing complex compositions. But at the output, these devices are plus or minus comparable in terms of photography for the layman. If you don't need any additional settings, you just want to get your phone and take a picture, then both will be fine. If you want to be able to do a little more, then the iPhone won't let you learn.

I took a number of pictures with both devices and asked Roman Belykh to compare them. I have no idea who he will give preference to, but it doesn't matter. Both devices play in the same class, they are about the same.

Crops (Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE / Apple iPhone 7)

Comparison of photos of Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE and Apple iPhone 7 (Roman Belykh)

Day... Under normal or good lighting conditions (sun or bright day in the shade) smartphones show roughly the same picture in terms of detail. A nuance - processing software photography: Samsung produces the most "clean", noise-free frame, and Apple practically does not. Therefore, the S7 Edge has all the photos slightly smoothed. By the way, algorithms work in a similar way on almost all Samsung devices, including S5 and S6. In addition, Samsung slightly overestimates the contrast, which makes the photos look more advantageous in miniature (on the phone, on Twitter, on Instagram). I don't really like it, however, "the taste and color" ...

Office Lighting / Home Lighting / Bar / Cafe... The first thing that catches your eye is the wrong white balance of the Galaxy S7 Edge, the colors become closer to warm. Sharpness is lost, light "soap" appears. The picture on the iPhone 7 is also distorted, but it remains with the correct WB and pleasant colors. The image is slightly sharper and more contrasty.

Insufficient lighting conditions... As it seemed to me, in this test Samsung is far behind Apple:

  • Get a blur-free shot more often on iPhone 7
  • White balance is almost always more accurate on the iPhone 7, even if not quite accurate, it does not go into warm colors.
  • Sharpness is slightly better on iPhone 7, less "soap"

The biggest problem with the Galaxy S7 Edge is its exposure and white balance. Typically, the photo becomes yellow and overexposed, that is, too light. HDR Auto is probably to blame.

Macro... During the day, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge makes better macros: sharper and more pleasant bokeh. In poor lighting conditions, Samsung's advantages are a little lost, and Apple "joins in" with a slightly sharper picture. But overall - parity, both are good.

Total. I would put the Apple iPhone 7 first because of its wider dynamic range, better white balance performance and less aggressive noise reduction in low light conditions.

Battery

It is impossible to compare the operating time of the devices in the forehead, you can only estimate how long they will last in the same tasks under more or less similar conditions. There are no miracles here, and the iPhone runs a little less time compared to the same S7. But most of the scenarios for its use are very different, for example, people do not use the maximum backlight, they limit the synchronization of applications. As a result, the iPhone 7 can show close battery life, up to one daylight hours.

Of the fat pluses of S7 / S7 EDGE, I would like to point out fast charging, it allows you to get a quarter of the battery charge in ten minutes, which is very good. Built-in wireless charging allows you to recharge your phone in cafes and other places without wires. Here again we see the superiority of engineering in the Galaxy over the iPhone. There is simply nothing like this in the iPhone 7.

Performance and stereotypes

It is well known that the iPhone, and any, does not slow down, and Samsung with TouchWiz is a set of jambs and brakes. Unfortunately, with each version of iOS, the quality of the software on the iPhone leaves much to be desired, but TouchWiz, on the contrary, got rid of old sores and works stably and quickly. Both systems are approximately the same in perception, an ordinary person without a stopwatch in his hands will not see any difference. Fans, on the other hand, will foaming at the mouth to prove that their phone opens the application faster, and will even tell the exact difference, which will be a split second. But you just have to look at how these devices work with your friends or in stores to form your opinion - how fast they are for you and whether you need to make them faster, and most importantly, why.

Memory for your files

It happened, Apple made a basic version of a 32 GB smartphone, nevertheless, in 2016/2017, 16 GB of memory looked like a mockery. Now there is full parity here, since the S7 / S7 EDGE has the same memory capacity. But it is also possible to install a memory card, and the cards themselves can be any, the main thing is that they are inexpensive. If you do not want to install a memory card, you can install a second SIM-card, such an opportunity in the iPhone has never been.

Special notes

The iPhone 7 got rid of the 3.5 mm jack, now you need to listen to music through an adapter, which is completely inconvenient. Anyway, until you get a large number of headphones with a proprietary Lightning connector. At the moment, this connector has no particular advantages. So here the win is on the side of the Galaxy S7 / S7 EDGE, at least for now for me, you may have a different perception of this feature.

Short afterword

I love competition. As iPhone sales began to decline, Apple rethought its approach and strengthened the engineering of its smartphones. We installed better and more expensive screens, extended the quality of the camera to the level of Galaxy, added protection against water. And this is great! Now these products are very close, offer almost the same feature set, and the Galaxy's advantages over the iPhone are less. But they are still saved, this is a large battery and, as a result, longer work in different modes, wireless and fast charging, the presence of memory cards, AlwaysOn screen mode. Unfortunately, there is nothing about the iPhone that can be called a unique feature in terms of hardware compared to the Galaxy. But maybe now Apple will try to do everything differently here?

I really like how the competition spurred Apple and made it make a product at the level of Samsung, the iPhone 7 has become much closer to the Galaxy. This means that the choice has become more difficult for you. However, the difference in cost remains noticeable. So, in official deliveries, the iPhone 7 is sold from 57 thousand rubles, Galaxy S7 - from 50 thousand, S7 EDGE costs 60 thousand rubles. And on the gray market, the same S7 EDGE can be bought for 40-42 thousand rubles. In short, there is something to think about and what to choose. Please tell us in the comments what you like about both devices, or maybe you choose a completely different brand. Share why you made this choice.

Which some media have already dubbed "iPhone killers". The devices were designed and tested by a South Korean manufacturer, which has set itself the goal of not only rehabilitating itself after the failure of its predecessor Galaxy Note7, but even rethinking the very concept of a smartphone. Well, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 + are here to help by offering “a whole new experience”.

Despite a number of the manufacturer's declared advantages of the new products, in direct comparison with the iPhone 7, the superiority of Apple's flagships in a number of key points stands out.

1. Support for 3D Touch

Apple offers smartphones - the phone can distinguish the force of pressing on the display. In addition to familiar gestures such as touch, swipe, pinch in, and spread out, 3D Touch enables Peek and Pop. This is a new dimension in working with the iPhone. Thanks to these technologies, the user can view and work with a variety of content without even opening it.

2. Dual camera

The Samsung Galaxy S8 lacks a dual camera setup like its competitor. The same 12 megapixel resolution, the same Dual Pixel technology as the Galaxy S7 a year ago, aperture of f / 1.7. In addition, Apple smartphones boast a dual camera that allows you to use the optical zoom function - zooming in without loss is priceless - and portrait mode like on an SLR camera.

3. Robust case

iPhone 7 ranks as the most powerful, most secure and most popular smartphone on the market, and one of the most rugged devices on the market. The top-of-the-line Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 + are much easier to shatter when housed in a full glass body.

4. Thinner and lighter

In terms of dimensions, the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 is more compact than its competitor - 138.3 x 67.1 x 7.1 mm versus 148.9 x 68.1 x 8.0 mm for the Galaxy S8. The South Korean device has become somewhat thicker than its predecessor and loses to the iPhone in this parameter. The weight of the flagship smartphones Apple and Samsung is 143 and 155 g, respectively. As for the Galaxy S8 +, its dimensions are described by the expression 159.5 x 73.4 x 8.1 mm, and the device weighs 173 g. The same characteristics of the iPhone 7 Plus are 158.2 x 77.9 x 7.3 mm, smartphone weighs 188 g.

5.iOS

The key advantage of the iPhone 7 over the Galaxy S8 lies in software. iOS is a more secure and easy-to-use mobile platform. Android, on the basis of which the South Korean device works, lacks many proprietary Apple applications and services, including the voice assistant Siri, AirDrop, AirPlay, iTunes, Find My iPhone and others. Apps in the App Store are of higher quality and more reliable. At the same time, iOS does not have pre-installed operator programs that the Galaxy S8 has and which cannot be removed from the device without obtaining root access.

6. Stereo speakers

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus have stereo speakers, while the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 + have only one speaker with mediocre audio. In new Apple smartphones, one of the active speakers is located on the bottom of the device, and the second is located at the top of the front panel. This arrangement seems quite original, but technically it allows for stereo sound when listening in a horizontal orientation.

7. Front Fingerprint Scanner

Many potential Galaxy S8 buyers are unhappy with the fact that the biometric module is located on the back of the smartphone. Samsung has taken such a step to make room for the smartphone display. On iPhone 7, Touch ID is located directly below the screen. Thanks to this feature, the owners of the "apple" flagships can easily put the gadget on the table, using Touch ID to make payments or confirm purchases in the App Store.

8.256GB memory

Apple offers three iPhone modifications with different storage capacities. Versions with 32, 128 and 256 GB of memory are available to consumers for different wallets. Samsung is offering the Galaxy S8 in Russia with only 64GB of storage.

9. Physical Mute Button

An important advantage of the iPhone 7 over the Galaxy S8 is the presence of a physical Mute key, which makes it easy to mute the sound when the device user is in an important meeting or in the cinema.

10. iPhone will not depreciate in two months

An important advantage of Apple smartphones is the aftermarket value. The company's devices keep the price at a higher level for longer than the South Korean devices. In particular, the 2-year-old iPhone retains the same value as Galaxy smartphones one year after purchase.

On September 7, at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium (San Francisco), the annual presentation of Apple took place, at which, according to tradition, updates and new items of apple products, including the iPhone, were presented. This is the seventh and, over the past few years, the best renovation of Apple's smartphone lineup. The changes affected everything: starting with the abandonment of the Mini-Jack, which was replaced by the Lightning connector, and ending with the appearance of a dual camera with a double optical zoom. But no matter how many emazings and bests sounded from the lips of the Cupertinians, the minds of real geeks are excited by only one question: is the new iPhone worthy of the title of the best smartphone? Or will it go to the main competitor - the flagship Galaxy S7 from Samsung? Let's figure it out.

Design

Samsung's flagships (Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge) were presented more than half a year ago. The Koreans took into account all the previous mistakes, so smartphones turned out to be really "sweet". There are not many changes compared to the S6, but they are significant. In the latest flagships of the S line, it is difficult to find fault with something, the design is no exception. The older model, the S7 Edge, turned out to be especially tasty. The body of the device is a symbiosis of metal and 3D glass. However, such a duet also has an unpleasant side - soiled. The back cover of the smartphone collects fingerprints better than any fingerprint scanner.

The main difference between the younger S7 model is the diagonal of the smartphone - 5.1 ″ versus 5.5 ″, as well as the number of rounded sides of the screen - one against two in the S7 Edge.

The display is made using Super AMOLED technology and has a QHD resolution (2560 x 1440). However, the younger version has a slightly higher density (534 versus 577 ppi). Glass - Gorilla Glass 4.

Between the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, in addition to the screen size, battery size and weight (188/138 g), there is another, more serious difference - the cameras.

The diagonal of the display of the younger version is 4.7 ″ (1334 x 750; 326 ppi), the older version is 5.5 ″ (1920 x 1080; 401 ppi). The brightness is 25% higher than the sixth generation.

In terms of design, the 7 and 7 Plus have the same design (except for the cameras, of course). The company decided to abandon the Space Gray option, adding two new colors to the palette: "black onyx" with a glossy finish and matte black. The first option looks nice, but it scratches even from the fingers.

If it were a smartphone from any other company, design comparisons would be much easier. In this case, I expect massive discontent in the comments, so I will refrain from the conclusion, leaving it to the discretion of the reader.

Iron

To begin with, the devices of both companies work on different systems, and what is good for one is not an option for the other.

CPU. The flagships of the S7 / 7 Edge are available in two variations: with the Exynos 8890 (2.3GHz, 1.6GHz) or the Snapdragon 820 (2.2GHz, 1.6-1.7GHz). The first version is international, the second is for the USA and China. Exynos processors are a proprietary development of Samsung.

Both versions of the SoC are built on 14nm FinFET technology (produced on the same pipeline), however, Exynos is eight-core, while Snapdragon has four cores.

The models are comparable in power, but show distinctive results in synthetic tests. This is due to the difference in clock speed and differences in graphics modules.

IPhone 7/7 Plus has a quad-core A10 Fusion processor (with an M10 motion coprocessor) running on a 64-bit system. It has a similar architecture to big.LITTLE. Two cores (2.23 GHz each) are used to solve complex problems,
and the remaining two are energy efficient.

The novelty is twice as productive and five times more economical than the A9 installed in the iPhone 6.

In benchmarks, the Exynos 8890 and Snapdragon are inferior to the A9 in performance on one core, but outperform in multi-core tests.

Memory. ROM. One of the important changes in the updated S7 / S7 Edge was the return of support for microSD cards (up to 256 GB). Previously, the company argued their absence by the presence of a faster ROM (UFS 2.0) "in order to exclude a situation where users who use an external card instead of the device's internal memory did not scold Samsung for poor read and data transfer speeds."

But with the capacity it turned out ugly. Unfortunately, both models were limited to a single version with 32 GB of ROM. So microSD comes in handy here.

IPhone users, apparently, have not even heard of memory expansion cards. No version of an Apple smartphone has ever been equipped with a microSD slot. But they don't need it. Why? Everything is simple to the point of banality - because Apple decided so.

As for the ROM size, the situation is better here. There are three versions to choose from:
for 32, 128 and 256 GB! The 16 GB version has finally been removed. This is definitely a plus, because the price for such a model remains the same.

Memory. RAM. Samsung models got 4GB of RAM. What is there with the iPhone is not yet known. The TENNA database indicates that the younger model is equipped with 2 GB of RAM, while the iPhone 7 Plus has 3 GB. But the situation with the device memory is a little different. The point is that due to the above information about the difference of systems, Android and iOS use memory differently. Android is a stripped down and modified version of Linux with a redesigned Java environment. And even an experienced bodybuilder will envy the appetites of the latter.

Starting with version 4.4, the Java virtual machine called Dalvik (used for code transformation) has been replaced by ART, a method that differs from its predecessor. The test results showed that despite this, the operating speed remained the same.

Another memory lover is the so-called "garbage collector", which is responsible for maintaining stability by cleaning up memory. I will not describe the same process on iOS, but I will note that optimization solves a lot.

Audio

Audio jack. Samsung has a tradition here, so let's go straight to Apple. Refusal from mini Jack is a controversial decision, no matter what the company's engineers say. Such a move allegedly opened up additional opportunities for the manufacturer. For example, they were able to install the Taptic Engine chip and increase the volume and physical size of the battery. Excellent! But other manufacturers also do this, and the presence of a 3.5 mm jack is not a hindrance for them.

Most people use the bundled headset. IPhone owners are no exception. And why does the headset need a built-in DAC when the musical capabilities of the smartphone itself leave much to be desired? If the company so wants to please music lovers, it is enough to use the experience of Meizu, Highscreen or LG. That is, equip the device with a separate Hi-Fi audio chip.

DAC. As in the case of processors, the audio chips for models based on Exynos (Lucky CS47L91 Sound) and Snapdragon (Qualcomm WCD9335) are different. The sound is good, but not up to the Hi-Fi. What DAC is installed in the new iPhones, I do not know. The 6/6 Plus was equipped with a Cirrus Logic 338S1201. I cannot say that he is “audiophile” either. Poor mid-frequency range, although it is corrected by software, but the result is still far from expected. The lack of HD audio is another problem of the company. But this is more of a nagging, because many will not even notice the difference.

Moisture protection

S7 / S7 Edge received IP68 protection. It means :

  1. the case is completely protected from dust and moisture;
  2. the smartphone can withstand immersion to a depth of 1.5 m for half an hour.

Apple's numbers are more modest. iPhone 7/7 Plus are IP67 certified, which is similar to the competitor's first point. But you can immerse the phone in water to a depth of 1 m. And even this is relative. Over time, the waterproof properties deteriorate, and in the official video of new smartphones, only the behavior of the device in the rain was demonstrated. Be sure: all other warnings you will find in the instructions for the phone.

By the way, the iPhone has acquired moisture protection since the previous version. They just did not advertise it officially.

Warning on the official website

Camera

Here we come to the main and, perhaps, the most anticipated update. Mobile photography has become so popular that it has long overtaken all other types of photography. And after the advent of Instagram, the need for a good camera has become a reference point for all mobile manufacturers. Both Samsung and Apple gave their best! We already have several articles on our site (Apple:,; Samsung:,) dedicated to the cameras of these devices, so I will limit myself only to a note and characteristics.

Samsung S7 / S7 Edge. Smartphones have the same camera modules. The front camera is 5 megapixels - wide-angle. Compared to the S6 / S6 Edge / S6 Edge +, the number of megapixels of the main camera has dropped from 16 to 12 megapixels. This is done in order to increase the pixel size, which now combines two LEDs, instead of one usual.

The technology is called Dual Pixel and is also used in professional DSLRs. The result is an increased focusing speed (0.2 sec) without sacrificing clarity.

Sony IMX260 module, 1.4 micron pixel and 1 / 2.5 ″ sensor. Macro, WDR, RAW support - everything is up to par. The f / 1.7 aperture is the record for the market.

In previous versions, the camera bulged outward (1.4 mm). The manufacturer took into account the mistake, now the camera protrudes from the body by 0.46 mm. A rich manual mode will delight any mobile photographer, and the presence of optical stabilization, phase detection autofocus and 4K shooting completes our short list.

iPhone 7/7 Plus. If earlier the difference between the 6S / 6S Plus was only in the presence of optical stabilization in the latter, now the differences are much more significant. An additional sensor and a telephoto lens were added to the older version. Cameras of both versions are 12 megapixels.

Photography

  • iPhone 7: f / 1.8 aperture 5x digital zoom;
  • iPhone 7 Plus: f / 1.8 aperture, f / 2.4 telephoto lens Optical zoom 2x, digital zoom up to 10x.

Filming

  • iPhone 7: 3x digital zoom
  • iPhone 7 Plus: 2x optical zoom, 6x digital zoom.

Optical image stabilization, six-element lens, BSI sensor, hybrid IR cut filter, HDR, autofocus (Focus Pixels), flash (True Tone Quad-LED), 4K recording (30fps) and A10 Fusion coprocessor - available as 7 and in the Plus version.

Outcome

The update to the iPhone lineup was really surprising this time. The company, which other manufacturers had previously focused on, changed its vector and tried to catch up. The rise of several Chinese players and Samsung's success have prompted the iPhone to descend from the skies and acknowledge the existence (and even advantage) of some of them. As we know, competition is the engine of progress, so the manufacturers' race is only beneficial to us, the buyers.

Pros: In addition to the increased performance indicators, which were at the same level before, new items from Apple received a major update of cameras, moisture protection, and stereo speakers.

The Home button is no longer mechanical. It is now a touchpad, under which is a tactile response mechanism. The minimum memory size has also changed (from 32 GB).

Cons: Given the preferences of the company's users, they are not.

Maybe someone will have questions about the new colors and the lack of Space Gray, but mostly the audience is happy. Even more.

Samsung has everything on the same level, so let's move on to the main question. To be honest, all of the above “innovations” remain such only for Apple. Because Android smartphones from A- and even little-known brands have learned this long ago. The Galaxy S7 / S7 Edge is a great example of this. And Samsung's devices represented by the main opponent were not chosen by chance. Based on the above comparisons, choosing the best one becomes even more difficult. The adherents of both companies have different priorities and needs.

The new smartphones turned out to be great and each of them has a multi-million army of fans for a long time. It is also interesting that the minimum version of the iPhone (iPhone 7 32GB) is more expensive than the top-end Galaxy S7 Edge, to which you additionally get Gear Fit 2.

But! You must understand that the above opinion is the result of blind comparisons. I have experience using Apple and Samsung smartphones of the sixth and seventh generations, but I cannot compare the new 7 and 7 Plus in any other way, except for technical information.

Output.

  • If you are a loyal apple-grower - feel free to take a new iPhone.
  • Do you value freedom and don't want to be addicted to being tied to various services? Your choice is the S7 / S 7 Edge.
  • Well, if you are a creative person and feel the need for a stylus, you can't imagine your life without USB Type-C or just paranoid, Galaxy Note 7 is what you need! Just wait for the updated batch, some of the devices have a serious problem with the battery, which can lead to it.

I personally prefer Samsung. What will you choose?
