Resetting RouterOS installed on x86

To reset the passwords and settings of the RouterOS operating system installed on an x86 computer, you must boot from the RouterOS installation disk. When a window with a choice of packages appears, click i and answer n to the question Do you want to keep old configuration? Confirm the reset by pressing y.

Let's configure the pptp client on mikrotik. All settings made below can also be applied to the l2tp client configuration. Select the menu PPP (1) → plus (2) → PPTP Client (3) → Dial Out (4) → fill in the IP address of the server provided by the provider in the Connect To field (5) → enter login (6) and password (6) → set check the Add default route (7). Click OK to complete this setting.

Let's move on to the Firewall settings. To do this, go to IP (1) → Firewall (2) → Filter Rules (3) → here you need to change the rules where In. Interface is set to ether1 (4) (5) on pptp-out1.

Select the required rule and double-click the left mouse button (1), having fallen into the settings in the General tab (2) in the In field. Interface (3) select pptp-out1.

The same procedure must be followed for the second rule. After that, you can proceed to the next section of the setup.

Let's configure NAT Mikrotik rb951g 2hnd. Select the menu IP (1) → Firewall (2) → NAT (3) → double-clicking on the mascaquerade rule (4) → set pptp-out1 in the Out Interface (5) field → apply the Apply settings (6).

This completes the setup. It remains to check the performance.

I decided to open a section on this site with articles on MikroTik routers. And I decided to start with instructions on how to enter the settings of the MikroTik router. Let's take a closer look at how to log into RouterOS (on which these network devices are running) at 192.168.88.1, and we will deal with possible problems. When the page at 192.168.88.1 does not open and does not enter the router settings.

Many people bypass MikroTik routers. For the reason that they have a very complex web interface and are very difficult to configure. The operating system RouterOS these routers run on is a bit complex and heavily loaded with different settings. On the one hand, this is bad, since it will be difficult for a simple user who is not very versed in these chips to find and configure some function. But on the other hand, it is possible to very finely configure your MikroTik. Plus, these routers are very reliable and efficient. And the price is good.

This is my first instruction on MikroTik, and my first acquaintance with the brand itself and the RouterOS system as well. And I want to say that there is nothing difficult there. All basic settings can be set on the main page (setting up Wi-Fi, connecting to the Internet, changing the password of the web interface)... All you need is to connect to the MikroTik router via a Wi-Fi network, or via a network cable, go to the IP address 192.168.88.1 through a browser, set the necessary parameters and save.

How to go to 192.168.88.1 in the MikroTik router settings?

The device from which we will open the settings must be connected to the router. You can connect via Wi-Fi network. By default, the network is open, no password. Or with a network cable. My MikroTik hAP Lite TC did not come with a network cable, which is very bad.

On the computer, in the connection properties (through which you are connected to the router) you need to set the automatic receipt of the IP address. By default, as a rule, there is just automatic receipt of all addresses. If the web interface of the router does not open, then you need to check these parameters first.

To open the equation panel with the MikroTik router, you need to go to the address in the browser http://192.168.88.1... Any browser will do: Opera, Chrome, Internet Explorer, etc.

This is how the RouterOS web interface itself looks like:

As you can see in the screenshot above, on the main page, you can set almost all the necessary parameters. Yes, I agree that if you need to do port forwarding, for example, or something else, you will have to dig into the settings. There are a lot of them 🙂

Why doesn't it go to 192.168.88.1?

The most popular problem is when the settings cannot be opened by the IP address 192.168.88.1. The page does not open, or an error appears that "Cannot access the site", "Display page", etc.

If so, try the following solutions:

Hope you were able to go into your MikroTik router settings. I didn't have any problems at all. Everything is even simpler than with other routers from more popular companies. Why is it easier? There is no default password for the Wi-Fi network and for access to the web interface. It's not difficult to enter RouterOS, but to understand it ... 🙂

First of all, Mikrotik is a Latvian manufacturer of various electronics (their main focus is network and computer equipment), which was founded in 1995. The company not only supplies and sells, but also develops routers with its own facilities wireless and wired type, software and operating system to them, as well as related equipment (signal amplifiers, cables, changing elements, etc.).

The technical components of the products are called RouterBoardand the software RouterOS.

The manufacturer attracts the attention of buyers with the following advantages:

  • Equal price-quality ratio... In the price category in which the manufacturer operates, he simply has no competitors, since he offers excellent quality and technologies of his own design and production.
  • Manufacturer support... Regardless of where this product will be purchased, the manufacturer takes care of supporting its electronics. Thus, the user can always find available instructions for setting up and even repairing the router. For example, all firmware versions can be found directly on the site.
  • System uniqueness... Due to the fact that all products use a proprietary operating system, the user can easily switch to new equipment or buy additional equipment and connect to an existing router without any problems.

But, there are several disadvantages:

  • If you really need uninterrupted work, then microtic is unlikely to suit you. But this is already hardware of a completely different level (several power supplies, redundancy of everything and everyone, and other joys of life). However, there are examples of RouterOS implementation on several x86 servers + VMware Fault Tolerance, and VRRP was not invented for nothing.
  • The main disadvantage of the microtic software is lack of encryption connections.

Router settings Mikrotik

In order to configure the router you need:

  • Internet cable from your network provider.
  • Personal Computer or a laptop on which all the basic settings will take place.
  • Actually, myself router.

Scheme connections:

So, the main stage of the work has been done and now all that remains is to set up your own wireless connection:

The next step is enter settings router:

  1. You must open any internet browserwhich you are using, and in the search box you will need to enter 192.168.88.1 (default address for routers of this company)
  2. After, in front of the user automatically page opens with router software.
  3. Now, you need choose a way, which will be used to configure the gadget. This can be done in several ways: Winbox - a program that will automatically carry out the necessary settings, Webfig - setting parameters via the web browser interface, Telnet - standard telnet setting.

It is best to carry out manipulations through automatic software. To do this, you need to download, install and activate it.
Now all that remains is to connect to the router:

Dynamic and static address settings

To set up a dynamic IP address, you will need:

Thus, we managed to get a dynamic IP address.

Receiving statistical address:

Pppoe configuration

Setting up pppoe is pretty straightforward and involves several steps:

Now, let's go directly to setting up the pppoe connection:

change Password

To change your password you will need:

Reset to default settings

An important parameter for each router is the ability to reset the settings. It may be required in those cases if, due to a software failure, all settings have flown and the router has stopped distributing a wireless connection. This action is also carried out through the Winbox program. To do this, you need to do the following:

  1. On the left you need to select a menu item New terminal and in the window that opens, you will need to enter the command system, and then, reset.
  2. To confirm your choice, press the key Have on the keyboard and reload device. Thus, all gadget settings will be completely droppedand its software will return to factory state.
  3. After the device has been rebooted, the user will need to to come in into a specialized program and carry out the steps that were described in the previous connection instructions.
  4. An information window will appear in front of the user where you need to select Remove Configuration and again reload router.

Routers from the Latvian company Mikrotik occupy a special place among the products of this kind. There is an opinion that this technique is intended for professionals and only a specialist can properly configure and operate it. And this point of view has a foundation. But time goes by, Mikrotik products are being improved, and its software is becoming more and more accessible for an ordinary user to understand. And the super-reliability and versatility of these devices, combined with an affordable price, make the efforts to study its settings quite adequate to the obtained result.

A distinctive feature of Mikrotik routers is that their operation is carried out under the control of not just a banal firmware, but using an operating system called RouterOS. It is a complete operating system built on the Linux platform. This is what scares away many users from Mikrotik, who believe that mastering it for them is something overwhelming. But on the other hand, the presence of such an operating system also has undeniable advantages:

  • All Mikrotik devices are configured in the same way, since they use the same OS;
  • RouterOS allows you to configure the router very finely and adapt it to the user's needs as much as possible. Almost anything can be manually configured!
  • RouterOS can be freely installed on a PC and thus turned into a full-fledged router with a full range of functions.

The possibilities that the operating system from Mikrotik provides to the user are very extensive. Therefore, the time spent on studying it will not be used in vain.

Connecting the router and basic ways to configure it

The connection of Mikrotik routers to the device from which the configuration will be performed is carried out in a standard way. The cable from the provider should be connected to the first port of the router, and through any of the remaining ports, connect it to a computer or laptop. Configuration can also be done via Wi-Fi. The access point is activated when the device is turned on and is fully open. It goes without saying that the computer must be in the same address space as the router, or have network settings that automatically obtain the IP address and DNS server address.

Having done these simple manipulations, you need to do the following:

The last point requires more detailed explanation. As you can see from the screenshot, Mikrotik router can be configured in three ways:

  • Winbox - a special utility for configuring Mikrotik devices. A link to download it is hidden behind the icon. This utility can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website;
  • Webfig - router settings in the browser. This opportunity has appeared relatively recently. The Webfig web interface is very similar to Winbox, but the developers claim that its capabilities are wider;
  • Telnet - configuration via the command line. This method is suitable for advanced users and will not be considered in more detail in the article.

Developers are currently focusing on the default Webfig interface. Therefore, in later versions of RouterOS, the start window may look like this:

And since there is no password in the factory settings for entering the router's web interface, the first time the user connects, the user can be immediately redirected to the Webfig settings page. However, most experts still continue to work with Winbox and consider it the most convenient way to configure Mikrotik devices. Therefore, all further examples will be based on the interface of this utility.

Configuring basic router parameters

The Mikrotik router has a lot of settings, but in order for it to perform its basic functions, it is enough to know the main ones. Therefore, do not be intimidated by the abundance of tabs, sections and parameters. You can study their purpose in more detail later. And first you need to learn how to make the basic settings of the device. More on this later.

Connecting to a router using Winbox

The Winbox utility used to configure Mikrotik devices is an executable EXE file. It does not require installation and is ready to work immediately after downloading. Initially, the utility is designed to work in Windows, but practice shows that it works fine on the Linux platform under Wine.

After opening Winbox, its start window opens. There you need to enter the IP address of the router, login (standard - admin) and click on "Connect".

If you can't connect by IP address, or you don't know it, it doesn't matter. Winbox provides the user with the ability to connect to the router using the MAC address. This requires:

The connection to the router will be established and the user will be able to proceed to its direct configuration.

Quick setup

After entering the router settings using the Winbox utility, the Mikrotik standard configuration window opens before the user. He is asked to remove it or leave it unchanged. If you need to configure the router as quickly as possible, you must leave the factory configuration unchanged by clicking on "OK".

To get to quick settings, you need to follow two simple steps:

  1. In the left column of the Winbox utility window go to the tab "Quick Set".
  2. In the drop-down list in the window that opens, select the mode of operation of the router. In our case, the most suitable Home AP (Home access point).

The Quick Set window contains all the basic settings of the router. All information in it is grouped into sections dedicated to Wi-Fi, Internet, local network and VPN settings. Let's consider them in more detail.

Wireless network

The wireless settings are located on the left side of the Quick Set window. The parameters that are available for editing there are the same as when configuring routers of other models.

Here the user needs:

  • Enter the name of your network;
  • Specify the network frequency or select its automatic detection;
  • Select the broadcast mode of the wireless network module;
  • Select your country (optional);
  • Select the type of encryption and set the password for accessing the wireless network. Usually WPA2 is selected, but it is better to check all types in case the devices on the network do not support it.

Almost all settings are made by choosing from the drop-down list or by ticking the checkbox, so you don't need to invent anything.

the Internet

Internet settings are located at the top right of the Quick Set window. The user is offered 3 of their options, depending on the type of connection used by the provider:

As you can see, there is nothing difficult in changing the parameters of the Internet connection in the Mikrotik router.

The local network

Immediately below the network settings in the Quick Set window is the LAN configuration. Here you can change the IP address of the router and configure the DHCP server.

For the Internet to work normally, it is also necessary to enable NAT translation by ticking the appropriate checkbox.

After changing all parameters in the Quick Set window one by one, press the button "Apply"... The connection to the router will be dropped. Restart your computer, or simply unplug and then re-enable your network connection. Everything should work.

Setting an administrator password

There is no password in the factory settings of Mikrotik routers. It is categorically impossible to leave it in this state for security reasons. Therefore, after completing the basic device setup, be sure to set an administrator password. For this:

This completes the installation of the administrator password. If necessary, in the same section, you can add other users or groups of users with different levels of access to the router.

Manual setting

Configuring the Mikrotik router in manual mode requires a certain knowledge and patience from the user, since you will have to set up many different parameters. But the indisputable advantage of this method is the ability to configure the router as finely as possible, taking into account your own needs. In addition, the associated effect of such work will be a significant expansion of the user's knowledge in the field of network technologies, which can also be attributed to positive aspects.

Deleting Factory Configuration

Deleting a typical router configuration is the first step from which manual configuration begins. You just need to click on "Remove Configuration" in the window that appears when you first start the device.

If such a window does not appear, it means that you have already connected to the router before. The same situation will be when setting up a used device configured for a different network. In this case, the current configuration must be removed as follows:

The router will then reboot and be ready for further configuration. It is recommended that you immediately change the administrator's name and set a password for him as described in the previous section.

Renaming network interfaces

One of the inconveniences of setting up Mikrotik routers is considered by many to be the monotonous names of its ports. You can see them in the section "Interfaces Winbox":

By default, the functions of the WAN port in Mikrotik devices are performed ether1... The rest of the interfaces are LAN ports. In order not to get confused during further configuration, they can be renamed as the user is more familiar with. This will require:

The rest of the ports can be renamed to LAN or left unchanged. If the user is not annoyed with the default names, then nothing can be changed. This procedure does not affect the operation of the device in any way and is optional.

Internet setup

Setting up a WAN connection has its own options. It all depends on the type of connection the provider uses. Let's take a closer look at this.

This type of setup is the simplest. You just need to create a new DHCP client. For this:

  • Parameter Use Peer DNS means that the DNS server from the ISP will be used.
  • Parameter Use Peer NTP responsible for using the time synchronization with the provider.
  • Value "Yes" in parameter "Add Default Route" indicates that this route will be added to the routing table and has priority over the others.

Static IP connection

In this case, you must first obtain all the necessary connection parameters from the provider. Then you need to do the following:

This completes the setup.

If the provider uses PPPoE or L2TP connection, settings are made in the section "RRR" Winbox. After going to this section, you need to do the following:

Configuring L2TP and PPTP connections follows the same scenario. The only difference is that the tab "Dial Out" there is an additional field "Connect To"where you need to enter the address of the VPN server.

If the provider uses MAC address binding

In this situation, change the MAC address of the WAN port to the one required by your ISP. In Mikrotik devices this can be done only from the command line. This is done like this:

This completes the Internet setup, but clients of the home network will not be able to use it until the local network is configured.

Setting up a wireless network

You can configure your wireless network on a Mikrotik router by going to the section "Wireless"... Similar to the Interfaces section, a list of wireless interfaces with the designation wlan (depending on the router model, there may be one or more of them).

The setting is as follows:

The parameters shown in the screenshot are sufficient for normal operation of the wireless network.

The local network

After deleting the factory configuration, the LAN ports and the Wi-Fi module of the router remain unconfigured. In order for the traffic exchange to begin between them, you need to combine them into a bridge. The sequence of settings made is as follows:

This completes the configuration of the local network.

In the article, only the most basic points of setting up Mikrotik routers were touched upon. Their capabilities are immeasurably greater. But these first steps can be the starting point from which you can begin to dive into the wonderful world of computer networks.
