It seems that smart clock is a very recent invention, which only has to prove its viability. But this year, Samsung has released any little already fifth generation of their smart watches - Galaxy Gear S3 Classic. The South Korean manufacturer did not return to the use of a curved display, but noticeably "pumped" the gadget, which received a new "stuffing", and, most importantly, the rotating bezel to control the device. Appearance

Samsung offers smart watches in two modifications: Frontier and Classic. The first features support for ESIM cards and cellular communications, but the classical version was tested for testing, which is not so sad: the Gear S3 is not distinguished from the usual mechanical clocks (or electronic, depending on which your dial is set). No color modifications are provided, buying the Classic model, you will get a mirror-silver stainless steel case and two black leather straps of different sizes. However, you can buy a strap absolutely any - a standard 22-millimeter mount is installed on the gadget housing. Gadget is sealed and certified according to IP68 standard, which allows the device to continue to work at a depth of more than 1.5 meters longer than 30 minutes. Despite this, swim in the clock, especially in salty water, is not worth it.

The front panel of the watch is occupied by the display, which is in a slight recess - it should save it from too fast coverage of scratches. The outer contour of the velocity protruding above is covered with notches for more convenient rotation.

There is no button on the left, but there is a perforation for which the speaker is hidden. The reverse side of the cluster of the watch is made of plastic, the pylsometer is located in the middle of the rear panel.

Ergonomics

Gear S3 Classic is no more and no harder almost any mechanical clocks of the same diameter. However, we advise you to try on a gadget before buying, especially girls.

Screen

The clock is equipped with a fully round display with a 1.3 diameter matrix and a resolution of 360x360 pixels, which gives a density of 278 PPI. According to the characteristics, the display is practically not inferior to the screens of Samsung flagships - has excellent color reproduction and clarity of the picture. Pixelization when using hours is not noticeable, but The maximum display brightness is even redundant when using the device and it will be necessary only that on the most sunny days. The screen is protected by glass Gorilla Glass SR + from Corning on which a high-quality oleophobic coating is applied. The clock is supported by adaptive brightness adjustment, but where exactly the manufacturer has placed the light sensor - find out not It was possible. Like SAMSUNG smartphones screens, the Gear S3 display has a high sensitivity mode that allows you to control the device even in gloves. At the same time, the display can recognize up to two touches, although multitouch gestures in Gear S3 are rarely used and only in third-party applications.

Interface

Gear S3 is working on its own SAMSUNG, TIZEN 2.3.2 operating system, which allowed the manufacturer to implement an unusual interface and functions that are not in Android Wear. Bezel became the fastest and most convenient way to manage the new interface. It serves to scroll through screens and lists, switch tracks in player, brightness changes, volume and has another number of functions that depend on the running application. Thanks to this method for managing for hours, the interaction with the gadget was able to simplify that: in most standard programs, the necessary action is selected by the ride of the beer, and the confirmation is carried out by pressing the center of the screen. Of course, they support the clock and a more familiar method of control - the spike brushes and the choice of the desired tap icon, but it is not so comfortable.

In the smart clock, by analogy with desktops on the smartphone, the concept of widgets was implemented. The first widget on the main screen - dial. It can not be removed, but, of course, you can change. In addition, most standard dials are configured in one way or another. Usually the user is available to select the color and display of additional information.

The remaining widgets that are located clockwise from the dial can configure independently: add, delete and change order.

Most widgets are added to the main menu only once, but some (for example, program shortcut widgets and favorite contacts) are allowed to duplicate.

Counterclockwise from the dial there are cards with notifications - they can come both from applications on the hours themselves and duplicate from the smartphone. The text of the notifications of the smartphone on the clock is always displayed, but the reaction is not available for it for all applications. For example, pressing the "Reply" button on the notification from Hangouts will only open this messenger on the phone. To remove any notice, it is enough to smear the swipe up.

Smart clock via voice commands are able to run programs, set the timer and alarm clock, show the weather and perform a number of other functions.

The swipe top down the dial opens the fast settings panel, where you can adjust the brightness, volume, enable the "Flight" or "do not disturb" modes, as well as run the audio player.

In those rare cases when you need to enter the text, you can use either S VOICE or the keyboard. Switching between the layouts, the digital block and the panel with emotortones is carried out by the face.

Synchronization with smartphone

To manage clocks from a smartphone from Google Play, you must install the Samsung Gear application. The application does not know how to almost anything that watches would not be cleaned, but it allows you to conveniently and quickly configure the gadget.

Another thing that cannot be done directly from the clock is to install applications (with the exception of several dials). To do this, you need the Galaxy Apps Application Store, in which the smart clock programs are collected in the Gear section. Too large selection of programs (other than, dials) for the Tizen platform is not called, but it is quite sufficient to expand the possibilities of Gear S3 for certain needs. The smart clock uses its own SOC Samsung - exynos 7270. The processor is made according to the most modern 14-nm technical process, has two Arm Cortex-A53 kernels with a clock frequency of 1 GHz and a graphics accelerator ARM MALI-T720. The amount of RAM increased to the impressive 768 MB of LPDDR3 standard, but the volume of the internal memory of the EMMC 5.0 standard has not changed and is still 4 GB. Samsung Galaxy Gear S3, perhaps, the most powerful smart watches on the market and, taking into account the optimized operating system, the lack of performance for a very long time will not have to think. The gadget interface works as smoothly as possible, there is no brackets in third-party applications.

In addition to the mandatory vibromotor, the Novelty Samsung received and surprisingly a loud speaker. However, it is used quite rarely - to play the melody with an incoming call, listening to music from internal memory (although someone is unlikely to use smart clocks for this purpose) and for conversations on cellular communication. In the latter case, the speaker volume is enough for conversations even in noisy places, but to watch the clock to the ear is uncomfortable, and it looks quite strange. In short, the speaker in the smart clock is more likely a pleasant feature than what you will often use.

Wireless interfaces

There is no wired interface in the clock, but the Gear S3 wireless standards turned out to be "charged" in full. First of all, it is worth noting the energy-efficient Bluetooth 4.2 for connecting the clock to the smartphone and headsets, as well as Wi-Fi 802.11b / g / n, operating in the frequency band of 2.4 GHz. Wi-Fi is needed for hours to stay in touch even in the absence of a connection with a smartphone.

To support Samsung Pay, the clock is equipped with NFC and MST modules, but to pay for the purchases, you need to have the support of this system and on the smartphone. This means that if the Gear S3 is connected not to one of the latest Samsung flags, you will not be able to use this feature.

Among other things, the clock was supported by GPS and GLONASS. Navigation is needed by a gadget for more accurate tracking of activity in training, but when it is used, the battery life will be reduced to read hours.

Autonomous work

The smart watches are equipped with a carrier battery for 380 mAh. SAMSUNG GEAR S3 CLASSIC operation time with standard settings is honest 3-4 days, depending on the intensity of the use of the gadget. This became possible thanks to several factors at once: a relatively large battery capacity, the use of its own operating system and the application of an amoled display, which, when using dark, the designs quite economically spend energy.

If you want to see the dial constantly, you can enable such a mode in the clock settings. At the same time, after the timeout, the display illumination decreases to a minimum, and the dial itself is simplified. This mode only works if the clock is on hand, and reduces the time of their offline work to, approximately two working days.

RESULTS

If you do not take into account the professional gadgets like Garmin Fenix, Samsung Gear S3 Classic can be bolded to call the most advanced mass smart clocks on the market. The functionality of the device is even impressive "out of the box," not to mention the possibility of installing third-party programs and dials. Active tracking applications work fully automatically - you just wear a clock on your hand, and in the evening you open S Health and get detailed statistics. What is it different from Gear S2?

Samsung Gear S3 - Samsung Smart Watch on Tizen, compatible with Android-smartphones on the OS is not under 4.4 with at least 1.5 GB of RAM (as well as the previous generation), there are rumors that compatibility will appear and from iOS. The clock is equipped with a round superamoled display with a diagonal of 1.3 inches and a resolution of 360x360 and a backlight authoring (the previous generation was equipped with 1.2-inch screens). Instead of Gorilla Glass 3, Gorilla Glass SR + is used to protect the screen, which is created specifically for the wearable electronics. There are Wi-Fi modules, Bluetooth for pairing with smartphones and headsets, NFC, accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, cardiac rhythm sensor, lighting, and now also own GPS, which makes the clock more independent. In addition, an external speaker appeared, the clock can be used for conversations. Samsung Gear S3 is also protected from dust, dirt and water according to IP68 standard, which allows you to be at a depth of 1.5 m for 30 minutes. That is, still fully swim in them is not worth it. The FRONTIER model is additionally further protected in accordance with MIL-STD-810G military standards (protection against vibration, shocks and temperatures from -40 to +70 ° C) by itself, inside a more powerful "iron", and the battery capacity increased from 250 to 380 Mach.

What do you look like?

Gear S3 has become even more similar to "ordinary" clock. In the previous lineup, the Classic model could boast of this, while the "basic" looked more futuristic (although I would not say that it is bad). Both variants of Gear S3 are really very smirching on ordinary wristwatches. The Classic version is more suitable for a suit, Frontier looks more brutally and aggressively. It is my own way to my shower. The watch housing is made of 316L stainless steel. A touch screen is still used as a control screen, a rotary bezel with small teeth around the perimeter and two physical offices on the side (home and "back"). In the FRONTIER model, they are large, with texture for more convenient use, for example, in gloves, in Classic - small, round. Unlike Gear S2, the new model is equipped with a microphone and speaker, so you can now talk directly on the Gear S3 Frontier. The dynamics openings are located on the left end. Of course, the function works with a Bluetooth smartphone connected via Bluetooth. Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is quite large, significantly more than Gear S2. This also applies to the classic version, which is actually similar to Frontier in dimensions, and is only a little easier (59 g against 63 g). For a fragile girl, the clock will be vigilant and heavy, so it is better to measure, possibly Gear S2 is better fit. Moreover, Gear S3 is not a replacement, but more advanced and expensive replenishment in the line. SAMSUNG second-generation clock is not going to shoot with production and models will be sold parallel to each other.

From a male point of view, the appearance of the Gear S3 Frontier turned out to be as attractive as possible. Maximum visual approximity to a regular wrist clock plus an aggressive sports design has done their job. What about the screen and hardware stuffing?

Samsung Gear S3 is equipped with a high-quality 1.3-inch touch-shaped superamoled display, without any circumcised pieces like Moto. The resolution is the same as in the previous generation: 360x360, but the pixel density decreased due to the increase in the size of the screen: 278 against 302 PPI, although in this case it is absolutely not essential. The screen is very bright, with juicy colors and (of course) with maximum viewing angles. The ALWAYS ON DISPLAY function is supported, so the dial can be displayed constantly. Of course, the battery will die faster, but it looks even more spectacular. In inactive mode, the current dial with reduced brightness is displayed, but it is enough to look outside the current time:

Another useful thing is the mode of increased screen sensitivity. It really works fine and the clock does not interact with gloves in winter.

The hardware filling in such devices is not so critical as in smartphones. Moreover, Tizen is light and very well optimized OS, including thanks to a very small number of devices on it. However, Samsung has installed an updated iron: Used dual-core 14-nm Exynos 7270 processor with a frequency of 1 GHz (FINFET) instead of Exynos 3250, inside 768 MB of RAM (last ruler was 512 MB). The volume of the built-in memory remained the same: 4 GB, the user is available about 1.5 GB, which is enough to install additional applications and a small musical selection for running.

From all sorts of sensors and wireless modules there are accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, cardiac rhythm sensor, light sensor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC and GPS / GLONASS. According to the subjective sensations, it all works exactly, regularly, without any problems. Although for users who are seriously engaged in running / cycling and so on, it is still worth getting a more accurate chest pulpstationometer.

What with charging and battery?

Like the previous Gear S2, the current model is charged from a wireless stand charger, which is very convenient. It is much more convenient than all kinds of locks with contacts, although the charge rate suffers. The stand has a magnet for a faster and proper clock setting. At the bottom there is a LED indicator that burns red while charging and green when charging is completed.

A charger is connected to a power source (for example, a PC) using an absolutely standard MicroUSB cable, so it will not be with the loss of complete special problems.

Increased dimensions and weight are partly due to a significantly more capacious battery: instead of 250 mAh, a battery is used for 380 mAh. Promise 3-4 days of autonomous work. Under the actual conditions, with the ALWAYS ON DISPLAY function, the constant connection via Bluetooth and constant notifications are absolutely from all applications on the smartphone (plus automatic regular pulse measurement), pedometer and so on, the clock live 2 days, which is very good with such a filling. Without Always On Display, you can safely get 3 days. I did not perform the race without a smartphone with the memory of the route with your own GEARS S3 GPS module. There is a suspicion that such a scenario of use will significantly reduce battery life.

What about software?

The "smart" watches are becoming more and more, the platforms under them have already consisted, the situation resembles the "smart" TVs: most manufacturers promote their own solution. Apple continues to produce its square "Tamagotchi" on Watchos, Pebble use their own pebbleos (more precisely used, judging by recent news), a number of manufacturers stayed on Android Wear, which is attempted at least some unification, but not too convenient, but numerous Chinese manufacturers are experimenting at all with the trimmed options for "full-fledged" Android or their own crafts. Samsung continues to promote its own Tizen both in televisions and "smart" hours and it is worth saying that it is really convenient, but software developers are very sluggishly engaged in the release of new applications (although they are, including really useful local type Privat24, Uklon, Uber, EDA.UA, Tickets.ua and so on). Samsung Gear S3 work on the Tizen Based Wearable Platform version 2.3.2. In general, the organization and logic of the interface is very similar to typical smartphone.

Samsung Gear S3 Frontier has become more functional and manufactured than the previous generation. Even more stylish look and really very similar to ordinary hours. They are equipped with a maximum set of different sensors, sensors and wireless modules (except for supporting mobile networks in versions for our market, although the LTE version exists and actually makes the Gear S3 fully autonomous device). Branded software has already become really useful and functional. At the moment, Gear S3 / S3 Frontier is the most technological on the market. Plus, very high quality are made from the corresponding materials and look great. The main drawback from the times of the previous generation has not changed: this is a high price for which the user gets very technological, but limited by functionality / benefits device.
