How to clean the computer disk of unnecessary files. How to delete unnecessary files from drive C

Hello dear friends! Now I will talk about the problem that everyone has probably encountered. It is when drive C is full, and I will tell you what to do in such cases, and what can be removed without affecting Windows. I've been asked more than once what can be removed from drive C, otherwise it is full to the chapel, and the system shows a window with warnings.

Let's go in order. Why drive C? Because it is on this disk that the Windows operating system is installed in 99% of cases, and it does not matter whether it is Windows 7 or Windows XP. In the process of installing Windows, we divide the hard disk into partitions, I wrote about how to do this in the article “” Be sure to partition the hard disk, do not make one partition for the system and for storing files.

We create a section and set its size. Waters here is the culmination, depending on how much memory you give for the local disk C, after which time it will completely fill up. Previously, I always gave about 30 GB for the C drive, but already almost all computers come with hard drives of 500 GB - 1 TB. And to give the system in such cases 30 GB for the C drive, it seems silly to me. I now give it to the system disk, 100 - 150 GB.

But as practice shows, these 150 GB are very quickly clogged and the C drive becomes red, which means that it is completely full, and then the questions begin, what can be done, what can be removed from the local C drive? Although I always say, do not save any video, photos and other heavy files on the system partition. Yes, and it is desirable to install games on other sections, now there are such games that I occupy several tens of GB.

What is the threat of a full C drive?

Nothing terrible should happen. The computer will run slower, Windows will warn you that there is no memory on the system disk. In short, there will be many unpleasant moments in the work of the computer. Do we need it? We will decide :).

What can be removed from the local C drive?

This is probably the most important question in this situation. Many people want to delete information, but are afraid to delete something they need. After all, an operating system is installed on this disk, and many are afraid to harm it.

You know, I've seen a lot of computers in which the disk on which Windows is installed is crammed to capacity. Yes, there is a lot, this is on almost all computers with which I met. And you look that it would be unnecessary to delete, and it seems that everything is needed :), is it familiar?

1. First of all, it is worth remembering that all the information that is stored on the desktop, in the folder "Documents", "Pictures" and "Music", is stored on the local drive C. Be sure to check these folders first. If there are heavy files there, such as movies, music, photos, etc. Then transfer them to the local drive D, well, or E. In most cases, these folders contain files that fill the C section. And I have seen a bunch of movies on my desktop more than once, is it so difficult to copy them to another section?

Go to "My computer" and click at the top "Remove or change a program"... A window will open with a list of installed programs and games. Click on "Size" to sort the list by the size that the installed programs and games occupy. Delete everything you don't need, I'm sure there will be one. If there are very heavy games, then uninstall them and reinstall, only choosing a different section for installation.

3. We remove garbage from the system. If Windows has not been reinstalled for a long time, then it probably already collected several GB of garbage and temporary files. In order to remove them, you can use a good program CCleaner... I always clean my computer with this program from time to time. You can download it on the Internet, just type in Google “Download CCleaner”. Installs the program and run system cleaning. I will not dwell on this in detail now, I will write about this program later.

4. Empty the trash as an option to free up a couple of MB :).

These are the main (in my opinion) ways, by doing which, you can free up a lot of memory on the local drive C. You can also disable, or transfer to another drive, the system restore, or, but it seems to me that these are not very effective options and you need to use them as a last resort.

Summing up all that has been written above, I want to say that you can not allow the local disk C to completely fill up and this is very simple to do.

Copying or downloading a movie from the Internet? Do not be too lazy to choose to save disk D, E, or whatever you have. No need to save it to your desktop. Install the game, change the installation location from the C drive to another partition, this is a matter of a few seconds, and in the end it will help protect the system drive from reddening and ensure stable computer operation.

Also, when saving files to partition C, it is worth remembering that in case of problems with the operating system, you can lose all files. Because when installing Windows, partition C is usually formatted. I think it will be still interesting for you to read ““, it should come in handy.

And finally, do it again, it will hardly add memory, but it will put things in order, and the computer will work faster. Good luck!

Drive C is full. What to do and what can be removed? updated: January 12, 2015 by the author: admin

In this article, we will look at various ways to clean up the disk and free up space on it in any Windows XP, 7, 8.1, 10 operating system.

1. Where does disk space go?

In the process of computer operation, system updates, program installation, site visits and other activities, a lot of unnecessary files accumulate on the disk, which are often called garbage or junk. In addition, we often download some files ourselves, and then, when they are no longer needed, we forget about them.

Extra files not only take up disk space, but also reduce system performance. The disk takes longer to search for the files it needs, and some of them can take up memory space and use processor resources. In addition, viruses often like to sit in temporary files.

For stable, fast and reliable operation of your computer, you need to keep the disk clean and tidy. Nowadays, the problem of lack of space on SSD drives is also urgent, the volume of which is very limited.

In this article, we will try to comprehensively solve the problem of insufficient disk space. To achieve high results, we recommend that you read the entire article and follow all the tips in the order in which they are presented.

2. Removing unnecessary programs and games

First of all, remove all programs and games you no longer need. This will not only free up disk space, but also speed up the system.

Press the key combination "Win + R", type "appwiz.cpl" and press "Enter" or use the "Uninstall Programs" shortcut from the "" section.

In the window that opens, carefully review the list of programs, games installed on you and remove all that you are unlikely to use in the near future.

To uninstall a particular program, right-click on it and select "Uninstall".

Do not delete what you do not understand the purpose of or if you are not sure.

After that, manually find and delete the folders with the saved games of the deleted games, as they can take up a lot of space. It is easy to find out where the save of this or that game is by searching on the Internet.

Many online games also save their distributions (installation packages) during updates that are no longer needed, but take up a lot of space. For example, the Mail.Ru game center saves distributions in the "Distrib" folder, and the "World of Tanks" game - in the "Updates" subfolder. Files in such folders can take tens of gigabytes and can be removed painlessly.

3. Search and delete unnecessary files

It often happens that some old unnecessary files take up a lot of disk space, but we forgot about them and do not know where they are. In order to find them, I recommend using the "TreeSize Free" utility, which you can download in the "" section.

Once launched, the program will scan your disk, determine the sizes of files, folders and sort them by size.

This way, you can easily determine which folder contains the files that take up the most space. Delete any files that you no longer need. If you think you may still need any of them, write them to disk. The choice of the disk for scanning (C, D, etc.) is done in the "Scan" menu.

4. Transferring user's files and folders

If you have a second drive or partition (for example, drive "D"), then first of all transfer to it all files from the desktop and user folders such as "My Documents", "My Music", "My Videos", etc. ., since they are all physically located on the C drive.

You can move files manually by creating folders for them on another disk or partition in advance. But it is more correct to change the location of user folders by means of the operating system. Then all new files that you or any programs will save on the desktop and in the user's folders will automatically go to another disk partition without causing the system partition to overflow.

4.1. Transferring user folders in Windows 7, 8.1, 10

Go to the folder "C: \\ Users \\ Name".

Right click on the "My Documents" folder and go to the "Location" tab.

Replace the drive letter with the one where you want to move the folder (for example, "D") and click "OK".

Agree to move the files, and then repeat the steps for the Desktop folder and other user folders.

4.2. Transferring user folders in Windows XP

In Windows XP there is no function of automatic movement of user folders and we will use a special utility "XP Tweaker", which you can download in the "" section.

Install the utility and run it. Then select the "Windows XP" section in the left pane and go to the "System folders" tab.

Select the "My Documents" folder with the mouse, change the drive letter to the one where you want to move the folder (for example, "D") and click the "Change" button.

Follow the same steps for the folders "My Pictures", "My Music", "Desktop".

Then go to the "C: \\ Documents and Settings \\ Name" folder.

And manually move the “My Documents” and “Desktop” folders to the new location “D: \\ Documents and Settings \\ Name”.

5. Disk cleaning using Windows

All versions of Windows have a Disk Cleanup feature. It can be used to clean up any partition on a disk (C, D, etc.), but it is most effective for cleaning the system partition (drive "C"), since it is on it that most temporary files are stored.

Right-click on the C drive and select Properties.

Click the Disk Cleanup button.

Click the "Clean up system files" button (in Windows 7, 8.1, 10).

Check all the boxes and you will see how much space will be freed by deleting temporary files.

The size of temporary files can be up to 5-10 GB. Click the "OK" button and all temporary files will be deleted.

6. Deleting the hibernation file

The hibernation file (hiberfil.sys), which can be close to RAM size, is located on the C drive and is used for sleep mode. If you do not use this mode, and each time you turn on and off the computer in the usual way, then this file can be removed painlessly, since it takes up a lot of space.

The system will not allow you to manually delete this file, and even if you do it using a special utility for deleting files, the system will create it anew. Therefore, to correctly delete the hibernation file, you need to disable sleep mode.

Run Command Prompt as Administrator and run the following command:

Powercfg -h off

After that, the system itself will delete this file and will no longer create it.

If you do not know how to work with the command line or do not want to bother, you can download the command file "Deleting the hibernation file" in the "" section.

You just have to right-click on it and run as Administrator (except for Windows XP).

7. Disable or resize the paging file

The paging file (pagefile.sys), which can be one and a half times the size of the RAM, is located on the C drive and is used by many programs to compensate for the lack of RAM.

With a sufficiently large amount of RAM and a small "C" drive (for example, SSD), many enthusiasts advise disabling the paging file.

In the window that opens, go to the "Advanced" tab and in the "Performance" section, click the "Options" button.

In Performance Options, go to the Advanced tab and click the Change button.

Uncheck "Automatically select paging file size", set the checkbox "No paging file" and click "OK".

After restarting the computer, the paging file will be deleted and a lot of space will be freed up on the C drive.

But keep in mind that the work of the system is tightly tied to the paging file, and some programs may not even have enough 8 GB of RAM. Therefore, out of memory errors may start to appear.

You can try completely disabling the paging file if you have 16 GB or more of RAM, but still I would not recommend doing this.

8. Disable System Restore

The recovery service makes backups of system files and stores them in a special hidden folder, which can take up a lot of disk space. At the same time, the built-in recovery tool does not always work correctly, and viruses like to hide in the folder with backups.

Press the key combination "Win + R", type "sysdm.cpl" and press "Enter" or use the shortcut "System Properties" from the "" section.

In the window that opens, go to the "System Protection" tab, select the "C" drive and click the "Configure" button.

Set the "Disable system protection" checkbox and click "OK".

After that, all backup copies of system files will be deleted and additional disk space will be freed up. Thus, you can free up 5-10 GB of valuable space on the "C" drive.

9. Disable the recycle bin

You can disable the Recycle Bin on drive "C" so that it does not take up space on it. To do this, right-click on the trash can icon and select "Properties".

Set the "Shred files immediately after deletion" option for the "C" drive and click "OK".

After that, if you delete large files from the folders with distributions of games or any others, they will not go to the trash and will not take up space on the "C" drive.

10. Clearing the backup storage

To clear the storage of backup copies of system files in Windows 8, 8.1, 10, I recommend running the following command in the command line as an Administrator.

Dism.exe / Online / Cleanup-Image / StartComponentCleanup

For this purpose, you can also download the "Clean up backup storage" batch file in the "" section and execute it on behalf of the Administrator.

11. Removing temporary folders

You can painlessly delete temporary folders left after installing some drivers and programs:

C: \\ AMD C: \\ ATI C: \\ CONFIG.MSI C: \\ Intel C: \\ MSOCache C: \\ NVIDIA C: \\ SWSetup

12. Automatic cleaning and disk acceleration

There are special utilities for automatic disk cleaning of temporary files. One of the best I recommend is.

It can be configured to clean up temporary files every time you boot your computer, which will maintain free space on the C drive, and will also provide a little extra protection, since temporary folders are a favorite place for viruses.

But it is necessary to correctly configure it, otherwise this utility will not clean what you need, but will leave what you need to remove. Since the settings of the utility are quite extensive and it has many additional useful functions, I decided to talk about it separately in the next article.

The default drive C is the drive where the Windows system files are located.

Over time, it gets pretty much clogged and the memory on it becomes less and less. It seems that they did not install anything, they did not download anything like that, but there is still very little space.

There are usually two reasons for this phenomenon.: clogging of the temporary files folder and a large number of system restore points.

Removing temporary files from temp folder

In general, temporary files should be deleted at the end of work with the program, but this does not always happen. If you haven't cleaned the temp folder for over half a year, rest assured that there is enough junk. For some people, it is possible to delete more than 20 GB of memory on a computer simply by deleting this folder.

Finding it is simple: go to drive C and drive in "temp" in the search bar. There will be one folder in front of you, open it, see its contents, select everything and delete it.
That's all. This usually clears up a lot of space.

Deleting restore points

Now let's look at option to delete restore points... Sometimes they can borrow too about 10 GB space... The folder with restore points is hidden, so we will not see it just like that. You can enter the file system even with the usual WinRar archiver.

We do this:

  1. go to disk C using this archiver and see the "System Volume Information" folder there;
  2. we make sure that we do not need recovery and delete the folder.

These are the two most "power hungry" folders, and deleting them usually frees up a lot of disk space.

If this did not help, or did not help enough, then you should already turn to third-party utilities.

Folder cleaning programs

An easier way - download Scanner program or similar. She will be able to visually show you which folder takes up how much space.

In ten minutes in such a program, you can delete a huge number of files (for example, like browser cache) and unnecessary documents.

Increase disk space C by disabling hibernation

Also, to free up space, you need to disable the paging file and hibernation. If the vases have more than 4 GB of RAM, then the message about the need to use the paging file should not appear. If it appears, it's better to turn it back on. To turn it off you need to do the following: go to "My computer" press the right mouse button and select the item "Properties"... On the left we see the link "Additional system parameters"... We press it.

We see in the "Advanced" tab the item "Performance" and click "Options". Go to the additional tab, and the amount of consumed virtual memory will be written there at the bottom.

Usually, many of its values \u200b\u200bare set to 2 GB, but it can be different depending on the characteristics of the computer. Click "Configure" and then you will have a choice: disable it altogether or reduce its size. At any time, you can turn on or increase its volume in the same way.

To disable hibernation in a quick way, you need to do the following:

  1. go to "Start", and in the search bar we drive in "cmd";
  2. the command line opens, and in it we write "powercfg / hibernate off".

After completing this procedure, hibernation is turned off, and you get as much free space as you have RAM. To enable hibernation, you will need to change the value "off" to "on".

That's all. We have considered many ways that will allow you to free up the maximum space on the C drive even for the most demanding users.

Often, many programs are loaded automatically when the computer is turned on. Check out how it works to speed up your computer.

Computers are devices of fine technical and software organization. One of the conditions for their functioning at 100% of the available potential is, of course, cleanliness and order both inside and outside the system unit, and directly in the hard disk partitions. If you do not systematically clean up, freeing your PC from dust, dirt and "digital garbage", sooner or later a disaster will happen to it. It will start "slowing down" and "glitching" or will fail altogether - it will stop running.

This article will help you clean the C drive of unnecessary files manually and using special programs.

How to remove unnecessary files manually?

Empty the basket!

In Windows, all previously deleted folders and files are stored in a special directory called the "Trash". It performs the same functions as a trash can in a house or apartment - all the trash is thrown into it. At any time you can restore the data that you have deleted from this software reservoir.

However, if only everything unnecessary is stored in the "Trash", it must be emptied. Since the recycled "digital trash" continues to occupy the space of the system partition. Why waste it? After all, it's better to spend free megabytes (or even gigabytes!) On a useful program or game. Agree.

To empty the Trash, do the following:

1. Right-click on the "Trash" icon on your desktop.

2. In the contextual set of options, select Empty Trash.

"Cleaning" in Windows directories

During the operation of the operating system, so-called temporary files accumulate in its folders. After a one-time use of Windows or some other program, they turn into "ballast".

To get rid of them:
1. Press the key combination - "Win" and "E".

2. Right-click on the "Drive C" icon.

3. In the system menu, click Properties.

4. In the new window, on the General tab, click Disk Cleanup.

5. Wait a little. The system utility must analyze the directories before deleting files from the disk.

6. Check the boxes next to the items you want to delete (Journal, Sketches, etc.).

7. Click the "Clear ..." button.

Upon completion of the procedure, you can also remove the saved OS restore points and thereby further increase the free space of the system partition. This is done like this:

1. In the same window, go to the "Advanced" tab.

2. In the "System Restore ..." block, click "Clear".

3. Confirm the deletion of the backup points: in the request message, click Delete.

Attention! After running the command, the Windows utility removes all existing restore points except the last one.

What is done in the Temp folder?

The Temp folder also acts as storage for temporary files. Many programs and the operating system itself are placed in it in the process of performing various operations (unpacking archives, updating, installing, etc.).

In Temp, be sure to regularly "visit" and clean out all its contents. It can store not only temporary files, but also viruses. A huge number of digital "strains" are placed here after a successful attack on a PC.

To clear Temp:
1. Open a folder. It is located in the directory:

Drive C -\u003e Users -\u003e -\u003e AppData -\u003e Local

2. Press the combination "Ctrl + A" to select all files and folders.

3. Press the right mouse button. Select "Remove".

Have you been online? Get out of your browser!

After visiting sites, a fairly large amount of information, including confidential, is stored in the cache (special storage) and the browser log. Naturally, it also reduces precious free megabytes of the C drive.

Therefore, make it a rule to clear your browser after completing web surfing (working on the Internet). This procedure will not take you much time - only 1-2 minutes, no more!

1. In almost all popular browsers (Opera, Google Chrome, Firefox), cleaning is started by the "hot" key combination - "Ctrl + Shift + Del". Press them at the same time while in a web browser window.

2. In the settings of the panel that opens, indicate that you need to remove the data that was saved over the entire period of using the browser. Also check the boxes next to objects that need cleaning.

3. Click the "Clear History" button.

Get rid of unnecessary apps

Some users, especially beginners, experience “Plyushkin's disease” in the process of selecting and installing programs and games.

Whatever they come across on torrent trackers, software sites, and other Internet sources, as well as on disks and flash drives borrowed from friends and acquaintances, they must install on a PC. And at the same time they are guided by the same idea as the well-known literary hero: "I will take it, save it, it will come in handy someday." As a result of this approach, the clutter of the computer occurs almost with a geometric progression.

To neutralize an unnecessary game, utility from Windows, follow this guide:

1. Click Start (first icon from the left at the bottom of the display).

2. In the pulled out panel, click "Control Panel".

3. In the "Programs" section, click "Uninstall ...".

4. Click once in the list with the left button on the program you want to get rid of.

5. Click the "Delete" option at the top (above the list).

6. Follow the prompts of the opened uninstaller to neutralize the software from the computer disk.

Advice! You can also open the uninstaller in another way: Start → All Programs → the folder of the application to be uninstalled → the Uninstall file, or Uninstaller (or in Russian - Uninstall, Uninstall).

How to remove applications installed with the system?

The Internet Explorer browser, Notepad application, games (Klondike, Solitaire, etc.) and other applications integrated into Windows cannot be uninstalled in the manner described above, as well as through special utilities. They can only be disabled - to make sure that they are not displayed in the operating system.

1. Open: Start → Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.

2. In the window that opens, in the list on the left, click the last item - "Enabling and disabling components ...".

3. Uncheck the box next to the component you want to remove (for example, Games → Mahjong).

4. Click OK. Wait for the operation to complete.

Automatic deletion of unnecessary files

Cleaning programs

This category of software is designed to help you put things in order in the system partition in a matter of minutes. By means of special algorithms, these utilities delicately remove all existing "software obscenities" from the registry, OS directories, browsers and other applications.

Let's consider the most effective solutions.

Accurately detects and neutralizes temporary, unnecessary folders and files from the C drive (Temp folder, thumbnail cache, memory dumps, system log). Correctly cleans directories of browsers (cache, cookies, browsing history, saved passwords and logins) and other trusted applications (WinRAR, Nero, Google panel, etc.). It puts things in order in the registry: checks its integrity, eliminates errors in the "branches".

One of the most powerful utilities for optimizing the OS and cleaning disk C. Qualitatively cleans system folders and fixes problems in the registry. Provides the user with the ability to comfortably manage startup, scheduled tasks and uninstall useless applications. Has special settings for selective cleaning.

The most convenient tool for global and selective cleaning of the system disk. Uses more than 90 algorithms for removing unnecessary objects. Qualitatively optimizes the registry, startup, general OS settings. Knows how to perform detailed monitoring of consumed system resources in real time. Very easy to operate.

To use nCleaner:
1. In the utility window, click the "Clean System" section.

2. To clean the directories of drive C in the "Clean system ..." block, click the "Clean Now" button.

To fix errors in the registry, click the same button, but in the "Registry clean ..." block.

3. When finished analyzing the selected objects, click Remove.

What to do with unnecessary drivers?

Delete, of course. If any device is no longer on the PC, for example, a video card, hard drive, webcam, then, accordingly, its driver is not needed.

It is best to use specialized utilities to solve this problem. For example, Driver Sweeper. This tiny program is indispensable when you need to find out what drivers are installed in the OS and remove unnecessary ones. It has additional useful functions (registry cleaning, backup, etc.). Equipped with a multilingual interface.

Uninstaller programs

These service utilities perform semi-automatic uninstallation of programs and games. They find and run the uninstaller for the specified application, and then, upon completion of standard uninstallation, free the system partition from the remaining elements of the removed application.

Let's consider the most popular uninstaller utilities on the Web.

A worthy alternative to the system applet that is responsible for uninstalling software. Endowed with advanced functions, carefully parses directories. Finds all remnants of programs in folders and registry. Equipped with an easy-to-use control panel.

Performs analysis of the disk and cleaning it from "digital garbage" at lightning speed. Neutralizes objects from folders and the registry without disrupting the performance of the system and programs.

Solution from Chinese developers. Endowed with powerful algorithms for scanning system objects. Has a "Force Scan" function.

How do I delete files that cannot be deleted?

If you have not yet encountered a situation when an unnecessary file "does not want" to be deleted, then you will surely encounter it in the future. This is because the object to be deleted is in use by some application or driver.

Such problems are also solved with the help of special tools. Here are some of them:

Has a tiny size. It integrates into the OS context menu. Tells the user which particular process is blocking the application. Correctly removes files in directories. It is activated with just a few mouse clicks.

Able to remove a large number of file locks related to user rights, access and protection. Kills all blocking processes instantly and safely sends the selected item to the trash.

Endowed with protection against misuse: does not delete files without which the system will not be able to work and in which the user's confidential data is stored. Effectively removes locks and deletes files of almost all categories.

Beware, memory eaters!

Windows reserves the system partition memory by default for its special files. They can have a fairly solid volume - 4.7, 10 GB and more. But if there is no need for these files, or rather, those functions that they support, of course, it makes sense to remove them. Who needs another 5-10 gigabytes of free space on the C drive?

Pagefile.sys

The swap file is a kind of software reservoir for the PC's RAM. It temporarily stores data that the RAM cannot accommodate. But if you have a powerful computer with about 6-8 GB of RAM, then this file can be removed by disabling a special option.

1. Navigate to: Panel → Control Panel → System and Security → System.

2. Click on "More Options ...". In the properties panel, click "Options" in the "Performance" section.

3. Go to the "Additional" subsection.

4. In the "Virtual memory" section, click "Change".

5. Uncheck the "Automatically select ..." option.

6. Click the "No paging file" radio button, click "OK".

Advice! To reduce the size of pagefile.sys., Click "Specify size" and enter the file size in megabytes in the "Initial ..." and "Minimum ..." fields.

Hiberfil.sys

This file saves data when the PC goes into a special "Sleep mode" - hibernation. If you do not use this option, do the following:

1. Open "Start". In the search line, type - CMD.

2. Run the application that appears in the panel with administrator rights.

3. Enter the directive - powercfg.exe / hibernate off

4. Press Enter.

Also, hibernation can be disabled through the "Run" panel (launched by the "Win + R" combination). Type in its line - powercfg –h off and click "OK".

Successful Windows cleaning!

It doesn't matter how big your computer's hard drive is. Sooner or later, you will inevitably face the age-old problem of users of all time - "Not enough space on ...". If you replace the ellipsis in quotation marks with the letter of the system partition, it is not hard to guess what the newbie's diligently done "golden pen" cleaning process will lead to. The total removal of "unnecessary" files will cause irreversible OS crash. But if the user who overestimated his abilities knew the correct answer to the question “how to clean the C drive,” mistakes could have been avoided.

An explosive mixture of effective methods and the force of the shock wave of the applied recommendations will throw digital garbage out of the disk space. Especially for you, dear reader, seven effective methods of cleaning the system disk. Spin the scroll, ladies and gentlemen!

Operational service for recycling digital waste

In order to solve the problem "How to clean the C drive?", Use the standard Windows tool "Disk Cleanup":

  • Go to the start menu.
  • Go to the "My Computer" section.
  • Place a marker on the "C" drive.
  • Call the context menu with the right mouse button, from which select "Properties".
  • In the service window that opens (by default on the General tab), activate the Disk Cleanup button.
  • After a certain time (depending on the size of the system partition), a list of files that can be deleted will appear on the screen.

As a rule, not all items in the table are activated. Check the boxes where you want, and click on the "OK" button. Then confirm your actions - "Delete files".

  • The next item of the ongoing project "How to clean the C drive" will be the "Additional" tab (a window with a list of files presented for deletion).
  • Run the cleanup script one at a time: first Programs and Features, then System Restore and Shadow Copy.

After removing unnecessary programs and "checkpoints", you will obviously have more space on your hard drive.

Where are temporary files and other "eaters" of disk space hidden?

When browsing the web and installing software, the operating system methodically saves various kinds of data. In order not to bother with finding hidden folders and manually clearing overflowing cache directories, install the specialized CCleaner software on your computer:

  • In the main window of the running program, activate the "Cleaning" section.
  • Click the Analyze button.
  • After some time of waiting, delete the digital garbage detected by the software.

The question of how to clean the C drive is practically resolved. However, if you still don't have enough free space, follow the guidelines below.

We put things in order in the registry

All your actions related to changing the operating parameters of the OS, as well as the various editions made to the settings of the installed programs, are recorded in the system database. Which, ultimately, leads to the accumulation of corresponding entries in the registry log. By the way, OS slowdown, often observed by newbies, is the "clogged" state of the mentioned database. If the user does not know how to clean the local drive "C", then he probably does not know that the "system change log" also requires systematic maintenance.

Quite harmonious appeal to the previously considered software tool

It is cumbersome and extremely time-consuming to manually clear the registry. And, in general, a dangerous occupation! So let's take a look at how CCleaner can help you.

  • Open the "Registry" section in the main application window.
  • Click on the "Search for problems" button.
  • Then activate "Fix ...".

You will be surprised how much faster your computer will run!

How to clean drive C: gigabyte reserves

In pursuit of the goal of "more space in the system partition", it is worth paying attention to one important point:

  • During the installation process, the OS reserves part of the disk space for the paging file.
  • The final size of "virtual memory" depends on the version of Windows and the amount of physical memory (RAM) installed on the computer.

File "Pagefile.sys" can be moved to another partition of the hard drive. One way or another, the difficulty caused by the question: "Disk" C "is clogged - how to clean?", Will be resolved in the positive direction:

  • Go to the start menu.
  • Right-click on the "This PC" section.
  • Through the "Properties" drop-down list go to the "System" section.
  • Activate the link "Additional parameters ..." (left part of the service window).
  • In the "System Properties" window, click on the "Options" button (in the first block).
  • Then go to the "Advanced" tab.
  • Activate the "Change" button.
  • Uncheck "Automatically select ...".
  • In the check box with the displayed list of partitions, select the "C" drive and check the "No paging file" item, then - "Set".
  • Select a new directory.
  • Check the "System selectable" box.
  • Click on the "Set" - "OK" button.
  • Agree to the service request "Change".

After rebooting, the swap file will be located in the directory of the hard drive you specified.

Supporting software: disk space analysis

The practical solution to the question "how to clean the local drive" C "" can be greatly facilitated. Unfortunately, the standard Windows Explorer is, to put it mildly, uncomfortable in terms of visual control. Hidden files and folders are not displayed, and their "visibility" requires additional actions from the user. Therefore, it makes sense to use the incredibly handy WinDirStat utility. Each file type is displayed in a specific color. The application allows you to accurately determine the value and size of any program element. Even a novice can easily find folders with user data and "lost" files. Without resorting to third-party applications, directly from the utility window, you can make a permanent removal.

Natural ending

When you know how to properly clean the C drive, there will be no problems in working with your computer. Systematic maintenance of the storage device (HDD) will help prevent problems associated with the "overload" of the system, as well as any other partition of the hard drive. Never delete a file if you do not understand its purpose. Remember: the stability of your system depends primarily on your attention and judgment. So be sensible. And all the best to you!
