Hmmm….having seen a mention on Twitter from Max Schichal that he was inviting me to take part in a relay race called “Your Experience” proposed by Dmitry Icar and thereby passing the baton to me, I was a little confused. And all because I never had to take part in various kinds of relay races, well, except for those that were held when I was still at school, in physical education class. But nevertheless, I was very fascinated by this and I decided that I would gladly accept the invitation and try to support my colleagues in holding this blogging event!
At the time of writing this article, I had read only one relay post from the same Max, and he struck me with his sincerity and what he had to endure. After reading, I realized that I have a lot in common with Shikhal’s situation and have a lot to tell about scamming friends and situations with athletes on the street. But I didn’t write about the same thing, so as not to repeat myself. I’d rather write about how I earned my first money, because this will also reveal the theme of the relay. It may not be so touching, but it is the pure truth and my personal experience.
Summer 2005...
At that time I was 16 years old, and I was desperately trying to get off my parents’ neck and start earning money myself, so as not to ask my parents’ savings for my needs. Probably every 16-year-old teenager wants to be independent from their parents, go wherever they want, walk late into the night and communicate with those people with whom they see fit. I was no exception.
It was the height of the summer season and summer school holidays. After taking a couple of days off from school, I realized that I urgently needed to do something useful, namely, I needed to start earning money while I could. Since at that time I was not seriously interested in anything and didn’t really know how to do anything, only one thought came to my mind - to go to a nearby parking lot of cars and wash them there for money. I won’t say that it was a good idea... After washing a couple of cars with my partner, we earned pennies with which we could buy a pack of chips and soda. On the very first day, it became clear that things wouldn’t work out this way and we needed to think about how to get out of the current situation. The situation was further complicated by the fact that that same partner went to visit relatives in another city. Thus, I was left to my own devices and now I had to quickly decide what to do next.
After wandering the streets of my area for a couple of days, I met old comrades who, as if reading my thoughts, offered me a job at the Smart Electric company. But I didn’t succeed over time.
Then I found a job at a water park, which was not far from my home. A whole armada of thoughts immediately flew through my brain about how I would swim for days on end, meet girls in bikinis and bask in the sun. I agreed without hesitation! They didn’t specify the position, it was only later that I realized that I would have to work with just anyone, even a cleaner...
This is how my summer of 2005 began. On the first day, we came to an unfinished water park that had no visitors yet. As it turned out, part of the work was to get the water park ready to accept people. The concept of “bringing it to readiness” meant “licking” the territory to a shine, cleaning the building material (a pile of bricks and hardened concrete) and a bunch of little things that I won’t mention so as not to scare the reader. In general, there was a lot of work and it did not promise to be easy. Since the money promised good money, I did not pay attention to the difficulties and hardships, as they say, and continued to puff, dragging heavy blocks of concrete and bricks like a laborer. Fortunately for me, there were a lot of guys there and we managed it within a couple of days, as a result the area, including the pools, simply sparkled and was ready to receive people in huge numbers. Everyone was tired and angry, but one thing made us happy – the approaching swimming season.
Workdays began. I was appointed to the position of lifeguard, which I was infinitely happy about, since I had a rough idea of my responsibilities and knew how to swim well (I went swimming as a child). Literally from the first days there was a flood of people wanting to swim, because... it was the only water park in the entire region and literally from the first days I had to fulfill my direct responsibilities, namely to save children who for some reason were left unattended at the very moment when they began to drown. Yes, drown! I barely had time to pull out one child, when a couple of minutes later the other one was choking. Of course, I realized that I would have to forget about all sorts of courting girls in bikinis and getting a tan in the sun.
After a few weeks of such work, I became black (literally) from a tan and terribly nervous from how nervous I had to be watching this or that amateur go down the slide at speed, and then, having descended, screaming, choking from the water, words for help . I was really tired of all this and decided to quit before an emergency happened through my fault. Taking the earned money + the “leftovers” that we did every day with the guys, letting people through for half the price while the bosses weren’t looking, I realized that I was able to earn pretty decent money. For the first time in my life I earned so much money! For comparison, to make it clear to people what amount we are talking about, I could afford to dress from head to toe, buy a cell phone (which was a luxury for me at 16 years old) and take a girl to a restaurant. But no amount of money can replace health. All that was left for me after this work was a shattered nervous system, frayed vision from being in the sun for a long time and huge sunburns all over my body.
From everything said above, I made the following conclusions:
Working at an early age is good, but you need to choose your job wisely.
I should have realized earlier that it was time to start being interested in something. Something that would later develop into a profession.
No amount of money can replace lost health.
Autumn 2007…
The story about working in the water park, by that time, had sunk to summer. University admission was just around the corner. I prepared very hard, 8-10 hours a day. Going to university was my No. 1 goal, because... If I didn’t get in, I would have to go to serve. Serving in the army would have ruined all my desire to study, and I still have more than enough of this same desire! Be that as it may, I went to study on a budget basis, which I was extremely happy about. It seemed that the carefree life of a student had begun! But no…
Almost immediately I realized that I had a completely free afternoon. It couldn’t be left like that, so I started looking for work. This time I wanted to find a civilized intellectual job, and not work as a laborer.
