Horrible model

Disadvantages of the printer / MFP: Disposable printer.

Printer / MFP comment:

The model is successful at its price.
No wonder it has been in demand for several years.
One big drawback is that the printer is disposable. A cartridge costs almost as much as a new printer and cartridge.
Previously, it was possible to reflash the printer by downloading the firmware from the Internet.
But after the manufacturer has strengthened the protection, flashing is possible only in a service center, and even then not in any one. The reflashing cost increases the price of the printer by 50 percent, and this moves the printer to a different price range and makes the purchase irrational.

New firmware 1.01.02.XX and 3.00.02.XX
At the end of 2013, Samsung released new firmware versions for ML-2160, ML-2165, ML-2167, ML-2168, namely versions 1.01.02.00, 1.01.02.01. They didn't forget about ML-2165W, ML-2168W either: new versions 3.00.02.00, 3.00.02.01.
A distinctive feature of the new firmwares is much more thorough protection against modification, in this regard, there are no fixes for new versions and their appearance is in doubt. The firmware in ML-2160, ML-2165, ML-2167, ML-2168 is not stored in a separate chip (SPI Flash), but in the processor, therefore it is not so easy to downgrade the version, this is possible through the JTAG programmer and the corresponding software, but instructions in there is no free access, and the cost of the programmer will come out as several new printers :) You can look for people who have such a programmer and downgrade the version for ~ $ 25 (you will need to send them a formatting board). The cheapest option is to buy chips compatible with the new versions.
The exception is printers with Wi-Fi (ML-2165W and ML-2168W), in which the firmware is located in the SPI Flash, so if you have a programmer, you can downgrade the version and then order the usual fix firmware.
If your printer has a firmware version that is not new (ends with 01.XX, not 02.XX) - in no case update it! otherwise you will kill the printer ...

Introduction In the recent past, in the computer press, the statement "the user is tired of monotonous gray boxes" was quite often encountered. It is difficult to argue with him - indeed, when computers gradually turned from a purely working tool into a familiar part of the home environment, "unexpectedly" (in fact, of course, just as unexpectedly as winter comes every year for our motorists and road services) for buyers began to acquire value not only technical characteristics, but also appearance.

Ten years ago, the vast majority of computers looked almost the same: a large rectangular box of light gray or light cream, next to or on top of a CRT monitor of the same color: this combination was still suitable for fairly typical light gray furniture for offices, but at home it looked a completely foreign object. When was the last time you met a video recorder or a music center in the form of a gray steel box? But a modern computer, in fact, has already become the same household appliance - moreover, for many people it has replaced both the VCR and the music center at once.

However, that is the case for years gone by, but now we have a very rich assortment of cases and monitors that satisfy a variety of aesthetic needs - both in color and in shape. Moreover, cases made of black glossy plastic are especially popular among buyers: although it is rather impractical (glares, easily gets dirty, easily scratches), it is beautiful and fits well into the home environment.

At the same time, alas, manufacturers of various "optional" peripherals are still far behind the manufacturers of cases and monitors: one glance is enough to a catalog of, say, laser printersto understand - even having shrunk in size in recent years, by design they have generally remained the same boring gray office boxes.

One could assume that the reason for this is the low prevalence of "lasers" at home - however, this argument is somewhat outdated: not everyone needs color printing, and in black and white, even the simplest laser printer will easily outperform any inkjet printer in terms of speed, and in terms of quality and cost per print.

In addition, laser printers are also quite inconvenient in design - as a rule, a fairly small table is assigned to a home computer, while a printer requires a lot of free space to install. As in height - the control and the tray for printed sheets are located on the top cover, and in length - the tray for blank paper usually protrudes strongly forward and closes only if there is no paper in it.

However, today we have the opportunity to present you a laser printer, the design of which can be called, if not revolutionary, then at least deserving of attention - Samsung ML-1630.

Appearance

The ML-1630 printer perfectly matches the saying "it is better to see once than hear a hundred times." So let's start right away with a photo:

Above we wrote that one of the disadvantages of typical laser printers is a rather large height, while at the same time it is necessary to provide access to the top cover - there is a receiving tray for printed sheets and, as a rule, control buttons. You can forget about it with the ML-1630: not only is the printer only about 12 cm high, but also its top cover is perfectly smooth.

However, "perfectly smooth" can be said about the entire printer as a whole: its body is made of glossy black plastic. The advantage of this solution is the appearance, but the disadvantage is the excellent visibility of any scratches, dust and fingerprints.

The paper tray is located at the bottom of the front panel, it opens when you press the round button located right there. The tray holds up to 100 sheets of paper (with a density of 80 g / m2) - not much, but more than enough for home use. Please note that when closed, the tray is completely retracted into the body along with the paper - in contrast to compact printers of the classic design, in which the tray is folded forward during operation.

Printed sheets emerge from the gap between the two halves of the printer body. There is no output tray as such, but in case you need to print more than one or two pages, there is a plastic mini-tray that locks into the groove on the front of the printer in one motion. It is designed for a load of up to 30 pages.

To service the printer, its top cover opens - for this, just press your fingers on the lock hidden in its front part and pull it up; in the open position, the lid locks itself, you do not need to hold it.

The cover provides access to the cartridge and part of the paper path - in case of a paper jam.

If the sheet gets stuck in the central part of the path, the printer will have to be disconnected from the network and turned towards you with the back wall. There is a decorative cover on it (it was removed in the photo above), which opens access to the tract. Thus, "chewing" the paper is not a significant problem in the ML-1630 - a jammed sheet can be reached literally in a matter of seconds. However, it should be noted that during operation - and the printer printed a total of about two hundred pages - it did not crease a single sheet.

There, on the back panel, there is a socket for a power cable and a USB port. Unfortunately, because of them, it will not work to move the printer close to the wall - the connectors are not recessed into the case, which means that at least 5 cm will have to be left between the printer and the wall for laying the wires.

Also, about 5 cm of free space should be left on both sides of the printer - they have ventilation grilles for cooling the printing mechanism. Cooling is active, but the fan turns on only when printing, the speed is low and as a result is almost inaudible.

The only printer control is the Job Cancel touch button located in the front right corner of the top cover. There is a power indicator next to it, despite the symbol drawn on it, it is not a button - you can turn off the power only with the toggle switch on the back of the printer. When you touch the Cancel button, the printer emits a short confirmation beep.

Above, in the photos of the printer with the tray extended, you may have seen a glowing blue arrow next to the word "Samsung" in the center of the front edge of the cover. This is an indicator of the current status of the printer, made in the form of a matrix of blue LEDs and several additional icons.

When the printer is turned on, while it is starting up and conducting self-diagnostics, the indicator shows an animated splash screen - the dimensions of the LED matrix are clearly visible from it. At the same time, the printer is trying to play a simple melody on the "buzzer" built into it - to be honest, it is still far from polyphonic ringing, but it looks funny. The sound is low and not annoying.

Below the matrix there are four icons with various warnings that light up in red - with a blue arrow pointing to the icon drawn on the main indicator. So, above you see a message about the end of toner in a cartridge.

Three other red indicators mean a paper jam in the print path (for the above reason, we could not show it to you in operation), the end of paper in the input tray, and other errors. In the latter case, instead of a blue arrow, an explanation is displayed on the LED matrix: for example, in the photo above, the inscription "OPEN" is scrolling on it (the top cover of the printer is open).

The indicator does not stay idle even during normal operation: it displays a counter of printed pages. For each new print job, it is reset to zero - and this is very convenient, since by printing several dozen pages, you can determine at a glance how long you have to wait.

As a result, Samsung developers killed several birds with one stone: this way of presenting information about the status of the printer is an order of magnitude more convenient and informative than one or two status LEDs of conventional inexpensive printers, large blue numbers and bright red icons are perfectly visible from afar and in the semi-darkness, which is not you can always say about small LCD screens of "advanced" office printers ... And, finally, it just looks very beautiful and unusual.

The printer uses a specially designed cartridge model (including both a drum and a toner container) - ML-D1630A.

There are absolutely no problems with installing the cartridge: just lift the top cover of the printer and, with a little effort, insert the cartridge into place along the guides.

The resource of the cartridge is 2000 pages at 5% coverage (the so-called "test cartridge" with the resource of 1000 pages is supplied with the printer). Just in case, let us remind our readers that such filling corresponds to a rather loose text - for example, a one-page business letter with a heading above the text and a signature under the text, where the content itself takes up half a page. Printout of solid text will, of course, have less cartridge yields in pages.

Software

The Samsung website provides drivers for the operating systems Microsoft Windows (from 2000 to Vista), Linux (without specifying kernel versions, printing subsystems, etc.) and MacOS X (versions 10.3 and 10.4). In our work, we checked only the first of them.

I was pleasantly pleased with the fact that both 32-bit and 64-bit systems are supported - and not only Vista, but also the not very popular Windows XP Professional 64-bit Edition.

The driver was installed without the slightest problem, after which the "SSManager" icon appeared in the system tray, through which you can call the printer status window or its settings panel.

In addition to the current status of the printer, the status window shows the level of toner in the cartridge (most likely, it is calculated based on the number of sheets printed). The "Buy Now" button, located right there, will take you to the Samsung website with information about the type of cartridge and the stores that cooperate with Samsung, the remaining two buttons open the troubleshooting guide and the driver settings panel.

The settings are quite standard: you can choose the print resolution, turn on the toner saving mode and make the image a little lighter or slightly darker.

There is also the option to automatically print posters that span multiple sheets of paper.

In general, only one thing can be said about the printer driver: it works. We have not encountered any problems with the software during the entire period of using the printer.

Test results

The printer was tested on a computer with the following configuration:

aMD Athlon 64 3800+ processor (2.4 GHz);
biostar motherboard as part of the iDeq 330N barebon kit (Nvidia NForce 6100 chipset);
1 GB DDR PC3200 memory;
hard drive Samsung T166S HD321KJ (320 GB);
OS Windows XP Professional 64-bit Edition.

Test templates were prepared in PDF format and printed from Adobe Reader 8.0, font rendering tests from Microsoft Office 2003 SP3. The results were scanned on a Canon CanoScan 8800F scanner, the scanning resolution was selected depending on the test so that the scanner did not introduce additional artifacts visible to the eye into the image.

Connecting the printer and installing the driver went smoothly. We used driver version 3.04.32, the latest one available at the time of testing on the Samsung website.

It took 14 seconds from the time the job was sent to the end of the first page - one second less than the printer manufacturer promises. Further, on a test job with a volume of about 30 pages of text, the printer demonstrated a print speed of 16 ppm (excluding the aforementioned 14-second warm-up), which exactly coincides with its passport data.

Samsung promises quiet operation of the printer, and does not deceive - the ML-1630 emits a fairly moderate level of hum when printing, unobtrusive and does not interfere even when working in a small room.

600 dpi

The print quality of the Times New Roman and Arial fonts at 600 dpi did not cause any complaints: even the 2 pt font. displayed quite well. Small steps are noticeable on the letters, but in reality it is almost impossible to make out them without a good magnifying glass.

1200 dpi

Switching to 1200 dpi made the fonts a bit thinner, and there were no problems with their display in this case.

600 dpi, save toner

Surprisingly, the toner save mode had about the same effect: the fonts became thinner, but even at 2 pt. imprinted quite confidently.

The next test is designed to determine the printer's resolution and how well its driver handles vector images that exceed this capability.

The first part of the test is shading, in which the line density increases from left to right. The picture you see above is a combination of the two - when the printer is set to 600 and 1200 dpi. Amazingly, they are no different! In both cases, the printer confidently fulfills resolutions up to about 700 dpi, after which the lines begin to run unevenly - sometimes less often, sometimes more often. The result does not differ at all on horizontal shading: apparently, the words "effective resolution" in the printer description are given for a reason, and it still does not support 1200 dpi in hardware.

On the world (a circle with converging lines - accordingly, their density increases from the periphery to the center of the circle), the printer showed a generally good result, but closer to its center it produced a series of artifacts in the form of white streaks. This is due to incorrect rasterization of vector graphics, in which the line density significantly exceeds the capabilities of the printer; ideally it should just fill this area with solid black.

To compare 600 and 1200 dpi, we printed the two worlds in different settings, scanned them and stacked them back to back. As you can see, the picture is completely identical - the quality of displaying vector graphics in the printer does not depend at all on the resolution set in the driver.

As a final test for resolution, we printed a solid gray field in three modes and scanned them at high resolution so that individual dots of toner were visible (obviously, any black-and-white printer can actually print only black, and shades emulates gray, making gaps between black dots).

It is clearly seen that the shape of the toner dots in all three modes is slightly different - thus, one cannot say that the "1200 dpi" mode is a complete fiction. It slightly affects the way the gray color is drawn and the display of fonts, but it does not change the rendering quality of the vector graphics at all - the latter is rasterized at 600 dpi anyway.

However, this should not be attributed to the shortcomings of the printer - as we saw above, at the default resolution of 600 dpi it copes with its tasks.

And finally, the last test - printing photos on A4 size. Of course, hardly anyone will use a black-and-white laser printer for these purposes, but the test allows you to assess the quality of graphics printing in general - which means, to understand how suitable the printer is for printing documents with pictures, diagrams and so on embedded in them.

Two photographs were selected as samples - with a wide light gray background and a high-contrast image against a dark background - taken with a Canon EOS-350D camera with a Tamron AF28-75 / 2.8 XR Di LD lens. Photographs in JPEG format with a resolution of 3456x2304 pixels were printed from XnView 1.91 on a full A4 sheet size.

On a light gray background, you can see both the printer raster and uneven stripes running across the sheet - however, it should be noted that they do not spoil the overall impression of the photo, but in general, the printer coped perfectly with drawing small details, halftones and transitions between colors, at least by the standards of black-and-white "lasers".

The printer also coped with the second photo - notice how neatly both the rays of the sun and the shining drops of water from the fountain are drawn. Although transverse stripes are again visible against the dark background of the sky, they do not spoil the overall impression.

So, what conclusions can be drawn about the print quality of a printer?

Advantages:

print speed corresponds to the one declared by the manufacturer;
accurate rendering of fonts up to 2 pt;
accurate rendering of vector images with a resolution up to 700 dpi;
very good (by the standards of laser printers) reproduction of details and halftones in photographs.

Disadvantages:

small flaws in drawing high-resolution vector images;
1200 dpi mode does not affect the rendering of vector images;
on uniform gray fills, stripes are visible across the sheet.

Conclusion

In general, the Samsung ML-1630 printer is definitely a success. This model is unlikely to be suitable for a large office because of the small capacity of the paper tray, not too large cartridge resource and modest by modern concepts, print speed, but if you choose a printer for home use or "on the executive's desk" - on ML- 1630 is worth paying close attention to.

The main feature of the new printer is a unique compact design - it is very easy to place the printer on a table, bedside table, wide shelf, while its height is only one and a half dozen centimeters. Moreover, if the printer is on the table, in conditions of a lack of space, nothing prevents you from folding, say, any foreign papers on its top cover. The paper tray retracts completely inside the printer and does not interfere with its operation, and the printed sheet tray may not be installed at all - if you do not need to print more than two or three pages at a time.

At the same time, the printer is also very beautiful: austere shape, lacquered black body, large and clear LED indicator of the current status - this model immediately attracts attention.

At the same time, the ML-1630 is inferior to the "classic" compact laser printers only in the capacity of the paper tray and printing speed - but let me tell you, how often do you need to print more than a few pages at home? ..

Of course, this printer cannot be called cheap - while similar in characteristics "classic" models cost in the range of 3-4 thousand rubles, at the time of preparation of the article ML-1630 was sold in Moscow retail at a price of about 5800 rubles, and a spare cartridge for it - at a price of about 1800 rubles. However, in our opinion, if you choose a printer for your home, based not only on technical characteristics, but also on the ability to organically fit into the interior, the ML-1630 is worth it. Moreover, he has no competitors yet.

P.S. By the way, simultaneously with the ML-1630, Samsung has released an MFP of a similar design - the SCX-4500 model, which includes a color scanner with an optical resolution of 600x2400 dpi.

Samsung ML printers are harmoniously complemented by innovative Samsung AnyWeb Print, SyncThruTM Web Service, SyncThruTM Admin 5, developed by Samsung engineers.

1) Samsung AnyWeb Print application is designed to quickly and easily collect information on the Internet. While viewing web pages, the user can select and copy any text and graphic fragments he needs to the print panel in the browser window. By conveniently arranging content on a page, the user will reduce paper and toner consumption for printing unnecessary information.

2) SyncThruTM Web Service allows you to remotely configure your network printer, update the firmware, print its configuration pages and other useful features.

3) The SyncThruTM Admin application provides configuration and control over all networked digital printing devices. With the help of simple and convenient reports, the user can analyze the received data in dynamics.

Another Samsung development is the CounThruTM Pro / Enterprise interface, which notifies the user about system errors, the level of toner in the cartridge, and even about the use of the device by other users.

Many devices in the series have a Print Screen button located on the control panel, with which the operator can print the contents of the computer screen. One press of the button prints the entire contents of the screen, holding the button for 2 seconds prints only the active window.

Samsung ML series printers are equipped with a toner saving mode, in which ink powder consumption is reduced by 30-40% with a slight decrease in print quality.

To prevent paper from jamming and curling in the print path of the printer, older models of the Samsung ML series use paper separation rollers that grip exactly one sheet at a time.

Some older Samsung ML models have an Eco Print button that allows the user to activate the toner save mode, configure the device to print multiple pages on one sheet, and initiate the default duplex mode. With the unique viewer of the results, the user can estimate the level of carbon dioxide emissions, energy and paper consumption when using a particular print mode.

Thus, Samsung ML printers are indispensable companions for users looking for productive and functional printing solutions.
