A program to disable the touchpad on a laptop. How to disable the touchpad on a laptop

Not all users know that the touchpad can be disabled on an Asus laptop. How to do this and why is it necessary? After all, this technical device is useful. But when using a traditional mouse, it may sometimes be necessary to eliminate duplication of control functions.

In this case, the question arises: what are the ways to disable the touchpad and what are the solutions to this problem?

Why is a touchpad needed?

This device is a special touch panel that is designed to operate the device without auxiliary devices like a mouse. The touchpad is made for those who are comfortable with moving their fingers. For some users, it just annoys, because it often touches the palms during the printing process. As a result, you can reset the desired settings. Also, laptops today are often used instead of desktop computers. And they, as you know, do not need such a device. Next, it's worth taking a closer look at how to disable the touchpad on an Asus laptop.

Unprofessional disconnection methods

The easiest way for those who do not want to delve into the intricacies of the device and look for appropriate instructions is to close the touchpad with any unnecessary plastic card and secure it with tape. Although, it will not close the device buttons, so they will continue to cause inconvenience in the process of work. The second way is to position the cursor at any place in the text and move the mouse so that the arrow appears at the very base of the right corner. True, this does not provide a high level of reliability. After all, the mouse can be touched with a hand and moved to another place.

Standard methods

Most laptops are equipped with a dedicated button located near the touchpad. It has a crossed out square or rectangle with a hand touching it. In addition, there is an official hotkey combination to disable the touch pad. In this article, we are talking about the Asus touchpad, for which the Fn + F9 combination is provided. You will need to remember it. If the user does not know what hotkeys to use, the following actions are performed:

1. Click "Start" and "Control Panel".
2. Goes to "Devices and Printers".
3. The "Mouse" tab opens, there is a tab for the touchpad driver and a check mark is set where it says "Disable when connecting an external USB mouse".

In the case when nothing happens when pressing hot keys, as well as when using the "Mouse" tab, this means that the user does not have the touchpad driver installed. Asus devices include Elantech touchpads. In order to download the required driver, you should go to the official Asus portal and select the laptop model, as well as the touchpad and operating system.

Professional ways

For advanced users who know what BIOS is, it is recommended to use the reliable option to disable the touchpad through this program. Manipulations are carried out in the Internal Pointing Device section. It is necessary to select the appropriate value, after that the question of how to disable the touchpad on Asus will never arise. Alternatively, you can simply disconnect the ribbon cable from the touchpad by removing the top panel. However, this method is only good for specialists who are familiar with the internal configuration of the device. In addition, before performing such an operation, you should make sure that the touchpad is never needed. As a rule, the methods listed above are enough to cope with such an unpleasant problem on your own.

After reading this article, you will learn how to disable the touchpad on a laptop, even if it does not have an on / off key.

The touchpad is a component of the laptop (touchscreen), which is an alternative to the usual mouse manipulator.

The creation technology is based on the use of a capacitive sensor.

He does not respond to the touch of third-party objects, only fingers.

Thus, the user's work can be facilitated.

Different manufacturers use different methods for disabling touchpads.

As a rule, in absolutely all cases, the sensor can be disabled by pressing a combination of hot keys on the computer keyboard.

This method is suitable if you have not found official device drivers on your computer or if there is no specialized window for working with the touchpad in the control panel.

Remember! Do not install drivers for input devices from third-party resources. All driver software must be supplied exclusively by your laptop manufacturer. If it is missing, the drivers are probably under development. By downloading utilities from other sites, you run the risk of infecting your computer with malware and damage to the touchpad and mouse.

In order to disable the touchpad absolutely on all laptops of the popular manufacturer Asus, press the following combination of buttons on the keyboard: Fn + F7, you can also use the Fn + F9 buttons. It depends on the edition of the laptop.

If you're an HP laptop user, all you need to do is press the upper left corner of the touchpad to turn it off.

If a disconnection occurs, the LED indicator near the sensor will turn red.

You can also enable the touchpad by clicking on its upper left corner.

To disable the sensor on Lenovo, press the Fn and F5 buttons at the same time.

Good afternoon!

The touchpad is a touch-sensitive device designed specifically for portable devices such as laptops, netbooks, etc. The touchpad responds to finger presses on its surface. It is used as a replacement (alternative) to a regular mouse. Any modern laptop is equipped with a touchpad, but, as it turned out, it is not easy to disable it on any laptop ...

Why disable the touchpad?

For example, a regular mouse is connected to my laptop and it moves from one table to another - quite rarely. Therefore, I do not use the touchpad at all. Also, when working at the keyboard, you accidentally touch the surface of the touchpad - the cursor on the screen starts to shake, highlight areas that do not need to be selected, etc. In this case, the best option would be to completely disable the touchpad ...

In this article, I want to consider several ways on how to disable the touchpad on a laptop. And so, let's get started ...

1) Via function keys

On most laptop models, among the function keys (F1, F2, F3, etc.), the ability to disable the touchpad is available. It is usually marked with a small rectangle (sometimes, on the button, in addition to the rectangle, there may be a hand).

Disable touchpad - acer aspire 5552g: press FN + F7 simultaneously.

If you don't have a function button to disable the touchpad, skip to the next option. If there is - and it does not work, there may be a couple of reasons for this:

1. Lack of drivers

It is necessary to update the drivers (preferably from the official site). You can also use programs for auto-updating drivers:

2. Disable function buttons in BIOS

In some laptop models In BIOS, you can disable function keys (for example, I saw something like this in Dell Inspirion laptops) To fix this, go to BIOS ( Bios login buttons:), then go to the ADVANSED section and pay attention to the Function key item (if necessary, change the corresponding setting).

Dell laptop: enabling function keys

3. Broken keyboard

It is quite rare. Most often, some debris (crumbs) gets under the button and therefore it starts to work badly. It is enough to press it harder and the key will work. In the event of a keyboard malfunction - usually it does not work completely ...

2) Disconnection via the button on the touchpad itself

Some laptops on the touchpad have a very small on / off button (usually located in the upper left corner). In this case, the task of disabling is reduced to a simple click on it (no comments) ....

3) Through the mouse settings in the Windows 7/8 control panel

1. Go to the Windows control panel, then open the "Hardware and Sound" section, then go to the mouse settings. See screenshot below.

2. If you have a “native” driver installed on the touchpad (and not the default one that Windows often installs) - you should have advanced settings. In my case, I needed to open the Dell Touchpad tab and go to advanced settings.

3. Then everything is simple: switch the checkbox to completely disable and no longer use the touchpad. By the way, in my case there was also an option to leave the touchpad on, but using the "Disable accidental palm presses" mode. Honestly, I haven't tested this mode, it seems to me that there will still be random presses, so it's better to turn it off completely.

What if there are no advanced settings?

2. Remove the driver completely from the system and disable auto-search and auto-installation of drivers using Windows tools. More on this later in the article.

4) Removing the driver from Windows 7/8 (result: the touchpad does not work)

An ambiguous way. Removing a driver is quick and easy, but Windows 7 (8 and above) automatically produces and installs drivers for all hardware connected to the PC. This means that you need to disable auto-installation of drivers so that Windows 7 does not look for anything in the Windows folder or on the Microsoft website.

1. How to disable auto-search and installation of drivers in Windows 7/8

1.1. Open the Run tab and write the command "gpedit.msc" (without quotes. In Windows 7 - the Run tab in the Start menu, in Windows 8 you can open it by pressing Win + R).

Windows 7 - gpedit.msc.

1.2. In chapter " Computer configuration " expand the nodes sequentially " Administrative Templates"," System "and" Installing devices"And then select" Device installation restrictions«.

1.3. Now check the box next to the "Enable" option, save the settings and restart your computer.

2. How to remove device and driver from Windows system

2.1. Go to the Windows control panel, then to the " Hardware and Sound", And open" device Manager«.

2.2. Then just find the section "Mice and other pointing devices", right-click on the device you want to remove and select this function from the menu. Actually, after that, the device should not work for you, and Windows will not install the driver for it, without your direct instruction ...

Some users say that they simply cover the touchpad with some kind of plastic card (or calendar), or even a simple piece of thick paper. In principle, this is also an option, although such paper would interfere with my work. In other words, the taste and color ...

In some situations it is necessary to disable the touchpad (touchpad; touchpad) on the laptop, but how exactly do you do this? There are different ways, ranging from factory, ending with special programs. They work regardless of the laptop model, but may vary and require different actions from the user.

How do I disable the touchpad on a laptop?

Many laptops (or rather, the overwhelming majority of them) are equipped with keys that are endowed with additional functions. Their main purpose is to manipulate the touchpad. These keys are:
  • a key that has a dedicated touchpad interaction icon (often a small symbol of a crossed-out screen / touchpad).
In most cases, it is enough to press these buttons together in any sequence and the touch panel will be disabled (or vice versa).

If pressing these keys does not help and the laptop does not respond in any way, then the necessary drivers or other software are missing.

Most laptops are equipped with a Synaptics touchpad with a corresponding set of drivers. If this applies to a specific laptop, then:
  • The first step is to go to the control panel. To do this, switch "View" to "Icons" (not "Categories") and select the item "Mouse".
  • Next, select the "Device Settings" tab (on the left of it there should be a red icon, the Synaptics icon).

On this tab you can:
  • assign automatic shutdown of the touchpad when a USB mouse is recognized;
  • turn off the touchpad in the device list.

Disable touchpad via device manager

If for some reason the previous method does not work, and installing drivers or utilities is not an option, then you can turn off the touchpad using the Windows Device Manager.

To open it, a variety of methods are used, but in absolutely all cases the R + Windows combination helps (the "Run" window will open), where you need to insert the "devmgmt.msc" command without quotes, then press the Enter key or the button in the "Ok »As shown in the photo below.

In Windows 10, just right-click on the Start bar and select Device Manager. But this method does not work in previous versions of Windows.

The required device is usually found in branches:
  • hID devices;
  • mice and other pointing devices.
To turn off the device, just right-click on the name, and then select "Disable".

The touchpad itself in Device Manager can be called very differently. If there is no way to find out which device from the list is exactly the touchpad, you can experiment and turn off the devices "at random." This will not entail any serious consequences, since if the wrong device is turned off, it can be turned on again in the same way.

And even if you accidentally turn off the display / monitor or any other device, you can turn them on again by simply restarting the laptop. If you unplug the working mouse by mistake, you just need to reconnect the plug for it to be recognized by the system again.

Disabling the touchpad on laptops of different models

The following will provide detailed descriptions indicating the required buttons to disable the touchpad for all the most popular brands of laptops.

It should be remembered that to disable or enable the touchpad, you must use the combinations of the above keys with the Fn button. For example, Fn + 1. This applies to all laptops.

  • ASUS... To disable the touchpad on such laptops, the F7 or F keys are usually used
  • HP... Some laptops from this manufacturer simply do not have a key to disable the touchpad. In such cases, you can try double-tapping the upper left corner of the touchpad, as shown in the photo. This method works on many newer HP notebook models.

If this does not help, you can try to hold your finger in the upper left corner of the touchpad for a while (about 5 seconds). On some laptops, the touchpad is disabled in this way.
  • Lenovo... To disable the touchpad on Lenovo laptops, the F5 or F keys are used as standard
  • Acer... For Acer notebooks, the most common key to disable the touchpad is the F key
  • SonyVaio... In the presence of standard official programs from Sony, it becomes possible to interact (configure and disable) with the touchpad through VaioControlCenter (located in the "Keyboard and Mouse" section). As for the hotkeys, they are not available on all laptop models from this manufacturer, but even if they are available, these combinations will only work with the official drivers and utilities installed. For Vaio, such a utility can be, for example, SonyNotebookUtilities.
  • Samsung... For laptops from this manufacturer, the F5 button is enough (in combination with the Fn key, of course). But, as in the previous case, all official drivers and related software must be installed.
  • Toshiba... For Toshiba laptops, the F key is the standard for disabling the touchpad. Also, the vast majority of laptops from this manufacturer use the Synaptics touchpad, which means that it is possible to manipulate it through the official program.

Video tutorial: how to disable the touchpad

If you still have questions about how you can disable the touchpad, you can check out this video, which covers all the main methods.

It is worth remembering that even the "hot" keys for disabling the touchpad do not always work without the necessary software or drivers. Disconnecting devices through the task manager will help, but in order to be able to disable the touchpad via hot keys, you must download driver sets for a particular laptop model from the official websites.

Most laptop owners and those who occasionally have to deal with laptop computers have come across a control device such as touchpad... Someone, for the sake of mobility, completely abandons the classic mouse, who uses the touchpad only in extreme cases, and someone does not recognize this equipment at all and considers it absolutely inconvenient.

Be that as it may, many laptop and netbook users sometimes need disable the touchpad completely... In this article we will consider several options, how to turn off the touchpad on a laptop .

Disabling the touchpad with the Fn key

The standard way to disable the touchpad is to use hot keyslaptop.

Hotkeys - a combination of two or more keys, when pressed simultaneously, performs an action or function that is not assigned by default to any of the original keys

In order to disable the touchpad using hotkeys, you must first find the function key on the keyboard labeled Fn.

Fn key (from english " function") is a function key that, when pressed, affects the functions of some other keys, on which, most often, there is an additional designation. Used for the operation of combinations of various hot keys

Fn key location may differ slightly depending on the manufacturer of the device and its model, but, most often, the Fn key is located in the lower left corner of the keyboard to the right or left of the Ctrl key. Below are some examples in the photos:

Next, you need to find the key that is responsible for activating and, accordingly, deactivating, the operation of the touch panel. There may also be options, but, in the overwhelming majority of cases, this function is assigned to one of the top row keys F1-F12. On the key we need, the manufacturer must have an image of the touchpad (or a crossed out touchpad) applied. The image can be both on the upper surface of the button, and on its lower side edge.

Now all that remains is to hold down the Fn key and, without releasing it, press the key that is responsible for activating / deactivating the touchpad. The touchpad should stop responding to touches and presses. If it doesn't, the computer probably does not have the software required for the function keys to work. More on this below.

Fn key program

If you have on your laptop fn and F1-F12 function key combinations do not work (and others), the most likely reason is the lack of proprietary software for function keys.

Of course, the reason for the inoperability of the Fn button can be caused by the lack of drivers for the chipset or video card, and mechanical damage to the keyboard, and even virus infection of the system, but, nevertheless, the main reason lies precisely in the software component of the function key.

So, different utilities are responsible for the operation of the buttons for disabling the touchpad, adjusting the screen brightness, activating Wi-Fi, switching to sleep mode and some others. Today, even devices of different models from the same company may require different programs.

Let's consider an approximate list of software required for the Fn key to work, depending on the laptop manufacturer.

Programs required for hotkeys to work in combination with Fn
Manufacturer
laptop
Required program
ASUS ATKACPI
ATK hotkey tool
Acer Acer LaunchManager Application
Acer ePower Management Application
Dell Dell Quickset Application
HP HP Quick Launch buttons
HP HotkeyMonitor
Lenovo Energy Menegement
ATK Hotkey Driver
MSI System Control Manager (SCM)
Samsung Samsung Easy Display Manager
Sony Sony HotKey Utility
TOSHIBA TOSHIBA Value Added Package

Any of these programs, if necessary, can be downloaded from the official website of the company, or, in the absence of full access to the Internet, from the disk supplied with the computer. In the second case, it is necessary to understand that the version of the program may already be outdated.

Disabling the touchpad when connecting a USB mouse

This method will be convenient for those who use a laptop both with the usual USB mouse and with the standard touch panel of the machine.

The essence of the method is that until an alternative pointing device, that is, a mouse, is connected to the computer, the touchpad will be in an active state. As soon as we insert the USB connector of the mouse into the socket on the laptop case, all control goes to it, and the touchpad stops responding to any actions.

To achieve this, you first need to open the proprietary touchpad driver utility. Most often, you can do this by going to Control panels to section Hardware and Sound and choosing there in the section Devices and Printers item Mouse.

Go to the tab in the window that opens ELAN (or an alternative name for the control utility) and look for the item " Disconnect when connecting an external USB mouse". If there is such an item, then put a checkbox in front of it and apply the changes.

Now when a mouse is connected to a laptop, the touchpad will stop working.

If your laptop is enough " old", then when working on a new version of the operating system, that is, on Windows 10, the standard software may not work correctly. Even with the checkbox to disable the touchpad when the mouse is connected, the touchpad may continue to work.
In this case, you can click on the button in the same window Stop device... Don't be intimidated by the displayed device PS / 2, it is likely that the system, due to compatibility issues, perceives the touchpad this way. The touchpad will be completely disabled.

Disable touchpad in Device Manager

Raising the degree of intrusion into the system and now consider, how to disable the Touchpad via Device Manager.

In fact, this is not as scary as it might seem at first glance. Even if we unintentionally remove one of the standard devices, be it a touchpad or a mouse, after restarting the computer, with a high degree of probability, the drivers will be restored automatically. If we disable both the touchpad and the mouse, then you can easily reactivate them using only the keyboard.

First, open device Managerby following the path:

Control Panel \\ System and Security \\ System

We find the section there Mice and other pointing devices (the name of the section may differ slightly). There will be 2-3 devices under this section, among which our touchpad should be. Click on the desired entry with the right mouse button and, if provided by the hardware configuration, click on the item Disable device... The touchpad should then be completely turned off.

Disable touchpad in BIOS

A more radical option for deactivating the Touchpad in a laptop is turn off the touchpad in BIOS.
This method can be conventionally called low-level.

If we disable the touchpad in the BIOS, then it will no longer be possible to activate it through the system, this should be borne in mind when setting up the computer

To start enter the laptop BIOS... To do this, when switching on, press the key programmed for a specific model of the device. There can be many options: Del, F2, Esc, F6 and so on. You can just guess the right key by selection, or you can find the desired option by the laptop model on the network.

In BIOS, we need to find the hardware settings, they can be located, for example, on a tab that has the word in its name Advanced , this is the most common option.

We are interested in the item that will be called Internal Pointing Device (from English " Internal pointing device"), Touch Pad Mouse or similar.
All we need to do is transfer the parameter state from Enabled (Included) in Disabled (Disabled) and save the changes made when exiting the BIOS (with the F10 key or other programmed in a specific motherboard).
After the system starts up, the touch panel will be inactive.

Disabling the touchpad loop

And the last way to disable the touchpad, which is worth mentioning in this publication, is disconnecting the contacts of the Touch Panel from the connector on the motherboard.
Most often, there is no need to resort to this option, but if nothing else remains, then it is quite possible to use it.

Pros of physically disabling the touchpad:

  • the way is 100%. The touchpad will not work in normal mode or safe mode. Naturally, the disconnection will affect all users / accounts;
  • can be used with limited user rights;
  • you can disable the touchpad in this way regardless of the installed OS.

Of course, the method is not without its drawbacks.

Cons of disabling the touchpad physically:

  • sufficient labor intensity of the method. It is required to either remove the laptop keyboard, or even disassemble it;
  • if you need to re-enable the touchpad, you will have to re-remove the keyboard or disassemble the laptop.

To disable the laptop touchpad loop, you need to determine its location. It is better to do this in advance, so as not to make unnecessary manipulations. You can consider the device of a laptop on the network among many manuals.
On many models, the laptop ribbon cable connector can be accessed by removing the keyboard. To do this, you need to along the upper perimeter of the keyboard move the retaining clips to the side of the screen and neat hook the keyboard itself... First you need to turn off the computer and disconnect the charger.

If you have problems with removal, then it is also worth referring to the instructions for disassembling the device of your model.

Now let's go directly to disconnecting the touchpad cable. There are two main types of ribbon connectors:

  • Flip-up latch connector.
  • Sliding latch connector.

Open the connector lock and remove the ribbon cable from it.
We advise you to insulate the loose cable connector. In order not to stain the connector with glue from electrical tape, for these purposes it is advisable to use, for example, a small piece of heat shrink tubing, just do not overheat it.
We put the cable in its previous state, without inserting the connector into the socket, and put the keyboard in place.

We have reviewed the main ways to disable touchpad on laptop... Now we will not be disturbed by accidental touches of the touchpad while working with the laptop keyboard.
