1.58 W / kg (Watts per kilogram)

The exterior of the Asus Zenfone Live is rather boring, it has practically no features that distinguish it from its fellows.

The smartphone has a fairly compact size - 141.1 × 71.7 × 8.1 mm, and weighs 120 grams. For example, has similar dimensions. The device lies comfortably in the hand, the plastic of the case practically does not slip even in a wet palm.

The front panel is protected by 2.5D tempered glass, but the manufacturer does not disclose its exact characteristics. In the upper right corner of the panel, there is an event indicator that signals the presence of notifications or the need to recharge. To the right of it there is an LED flash, an earpiece, a front camera and a light sensor. At the bottom of the panel there are touch-sensitive navigation buttons, unfortunately, they are not illuminated. The display occupies approximately 68% of the front panel area.

The back of the phone is plastic, although it pretends to be metal due to a special finish. The panel material resists all kinds of dirt well. In its upper left corner is the main camera with LED flash.

On the left side of the case, you can find a compartment for SIM and memory cards. On the right is the power button and volume rocker. The keys are embossed and pleasant to the touch.

On the upper end of the body there is a noise canceling microphone and a mini-Jack connector. The bottom edge houses a music speaker, a microUSB port and a microphone.

The Asus Zenfone Live (ZB501KL) is available in three colors: Shimmer Gold, Rose Pink and Navy Black.

Screen - 4.0

The display quality of the Asus Zenfone Live is only average. It is quite bright and contrasty, but there are problems with color accuracy.

With a diagonal of 5 inches, the screen has a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels, which gives a density of 294 ppi. The values \u200b\u200bare quite typical for budget smartphones, for example, there is a higher resolution, but it also costs more.

The brightness range we measured is from 7 to 450 nits. The contrast ratio is not bad at 750: 1. All this allows you to use your smartphone with the same convenience both during the day and at night.

At default settings, the color gamut is 95% sRGB, but the color temperature is significantly overestimated. Because of this, the color accuracy drops significantly, the average error value exceeds six units. A similar situation remains in the "Bright" mode. To achieve a more "honest" picture, you can activate the Blue Filter mode, in which you can set the white temperature manually. At the same time, the color gamut narrows by a couple of percent, but the white temperature becomes close to the reference. This improves color rendering, its error is reduced to two units.

The display has good viewing angles. When viewed from a high angle, only a slight drop in brightness can be observed.

Cameras - 3.5

The Asus Zenfone Live has curious 13 and 5 megapixel cameras. The manufacturer has endowed them with a fairly rich set of features, but the photo quality can be described as average or slightly higher.

The main camera has an f / 2.0 aperture, a 5-element lens and an LED flash. In the automatic mode, the photos come out well, with natural colors, but the sharpness is sometimes "lame". The smartphone turns out to be frankly bad at night photography: the sharpness drops very much and you can get a clear photo only with a tripod and a long exposure, and the noise makes itself felt. This camera behavior is typical for the budget segment, but the manufacturer still tried to solve these problems by adding as many as two special modes - "Shooting in low light" and "Night mode". In the first case, the photo resolution drops to two megapixels for greater light sensitivity, but it helps little - the noise becomes excessive. The second mode works on the principle of HDR - it takes several shots and from them forms the final photo with a lot of details. In this case, the image resolution does not change, the frame is obtained without noise, but remains indistinct. In both cases, it takes some time to keep the device still.

By the way, about HDR - the hero of our review has this mode proudly called "HDR Pro", although it is no different from that of other phones. It expands the dynamic range for better shadows and midtones.

The super-resolution mode seemed to us the most interesting. It allows you to capture a fantastic image size of 52 megapixels (8320 × 6240). At the same time, this is the most "thoughtful" mode, in order to get a picture you will have to hold the phone still for about 20 seconds. There is no need to wait for miracles - the detail remains at 13 megapixels, although there are fewer problems with sharpness in this mode. It is definitely not suitable for shooting dynamic scenes - the frame will be blurred.

The rest of the modes are typical for modern smartphones: "Portrait enhancement", "Photo effects", "Panoramic shooting", "Slow motion", "Children mode", "QR codes".

Video recording occurs in resolutions up to 1920 × 1080 at 30 frames per second. Electronic stabilization is available, but it only works at a resolution of 1280 × 720 or lower. The quality of the videos is average. The color reproduction is close to natural, the detail is also quite high, but the image sharpness is extremely high. Video sound is recorded at 96 kilobits per second.

The front camera has an aperture of f / 2.2, while it has rather large pixels - 1.4 microns. Its lens has an angle of view of 82 degrees, and there is also a flash. The set of modes practically does not differ from the main camera. The quality of the photo is average, the details are good. Color reproduction varies by mode - natural with auto and rich with portrait enhancement. The camera has the same problems with sharpness, although its capabilities are sufficient for selfies. The maximum resolution for video calls is 1280 × 720.

Working with text - 5.0

Typing on the Asus Zenfone Live is convenient.

The smartphone is preinstalled with a ZenUI keyboard with solid functionality. Its arsenal includes continuous input, a custom vocabulary, additional character markup, and support for themes.

Internet - 5.0

Asus Zenfone Live has everything you need for comfortable surfing the world wide web.

Google Chrome, the most popular browser, is responsible for browsing the web. He knows how to compress traffic, work with bookmarks and synchronize them with those, for example, on yours. There is an "Incognito" mode, which allows you to view pages anonymously.

Communications - 2.6

The set of communications and ports of the Asus Zenfone Live is typical for a budget device.

Bluetooth is not the most recent version, and Wi-Fi does not support the 5 GHz band. The microUSB port is used for communication with the computer, the connection of external devices via OTG is supported. The slot for SIM and memory cards is hybrid, you can install either two nanoSIM, or nanoSIM + microSD.

The list of ports and communications is as follows:

  • Wi-Fi b / g / n with Wi-Fi Direct support
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • FM radio
  • USB On-The-Go
  • GPS with A-GPS support, GLONASS
  • accelerometer
  • compass.

Multimedia - 3.4

The Asus Zenfone Live is well suited for a variety of multimedia entertainment, although there are some quirks.

The built-in video player is part of the Gallery application and does not have any settings. There are some oddities with the supported formats: the most popular codecs are supported, but not in all combinations and containers. Most likely, the built-in software is to blame for this, so the best solution would be to install a third-party video player from the Market.

Google Play Music acts as an audio player, which allows you not only to conveniently organize your music collection, but also listen to songs online from the Google store. At the same time, sound settings are available only from the main settings menu. Various stereo effects and graphic equalizer are available.

The built-in FM radio has a strange feature - mono sound in the headphones, even if the radio station is broadcasting in stereo.

The characteristic of the sound path is quite flat, without drops. The built-in amplifier has a certain power reserve, which allows you not to be very limited in your choice.

The volume of the music speaker is high - 78 dB. This is significantly louder than, for example, spinning the laundry.

Performance - 2.7

The performance of the Asus Zenfone Live is quite low, the smartphone is enough for simple tasks, but no more.

The device is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor (4 cores at 1.2 GHz), released back in 2013. For its time, it looked good in the budget segment, however, it is 2017 in the yard and how the use of an outdated CPU model can be justified is not clear. The phone has 2 GB of RAM, and the video accelerator Adreno 306 is responsible for the graphics. After testing, we got the following results:

  • Geekbench 4 (CPU test) - 1378 points (less than y);
  • Ice Storm Unlimited from 3DMark (graphics) - 4720 points (almost a thousand more than that);
  • AnTuTu 6 (mixed test) - 27577 points (even less than the not very new one).

The system interface works smoothly, although there are some slight slowdowns. The situation in games is rather sad - any kind of "heavy" games are better to run on the minimum graphics settings.

Heating of the device under long-term load is moderate - no more than 35 degrees. Warm, but not hot, so it won't be uncomfortable.

Battery - 2.9

The autonomy of the Asus Zenfone Live is average, with a single charge the device lasts about 12 hours of active use or a day or two of moderate use.

The smartphone is equipped with a 2650 mAh non-removable battery, which is slightly less than that of its classmates. For example, the same battery capacity is 4100 mAh.

When testing various use cases, we got the following results:

  • Video playback at full screen brightness - 7 hours non-stop. Dropping the brightness to a comfortable 200 nits adds another hour to this time.
  • Listening to music with wired headphones at a comfortable volume and with the screen off - 47 hours without interruption.
  • Conversations in 3G networks - 18 hours.

From the results, we can conclude that with active use of the device, one cannot do without.

The supplied charger fully charges the smartphone in a little over two hours. There are no fast charging technologies available.

Memory - 4.0

The Asus Zenfone Live is sold in two versions, with 16 and 32 GB of internal storage.

We tested a version with 32 GB, of which 24 GB is available. Supports microSD memory cards up to 128 GB. Given the hybrid memory / SIM card slot, this presents the user with a tricky choice.

Features:

The operating system of the smartphone is pre-installed on top of the ZenUI 3.5 shell. Compared to stock Android, it has a nicer graphic design and supports various themes. It also comes preloaded with many additional social media and entertainment apps.

Separately, we note the application "BeautyLive", designed to conduct online broadcasts from the front camera of Asus Zenfone Live on Youtube or Instagram. Quite an interesting functionality that can be useful to bloggers or travelers, and just lovers of social networks.

Unlike many competitors, it does not have the fingerprint sensor that has already become common in all price segments.

In the winter of 2017, Asus, known to many domestic buyers, released a new smartphone model - Asus ZenFone Live ZB501KL 32GB. The reviews about the device are simply amazing. Even before it went on sale, many users were interested in the new product. And the reason for this was the innovative technology for video broadcasting. For most buyers who simply live online, it was this development that became decisive when choosing. This model is perfect for bloggers and people who like to take selfies. The appearance of the gadget also did not go unnoticed. She caused heated discussions. So let's take a look at which users have highlighted the advantages of the Asus ZenFone Live ZB501KL 32GB in the reviews, and which have been ranked as disadvantages. Let's also figure out whether the company has succeeded in providing young creators with an affordable gadget in order to be a leader.

Let's look into the box

The manufacturer did not make a large packing box, limiting itself to dimensions that are quite a bit larger than the phone itself. Thick cardboard was used as a material for it. In order to get to the contents, you will need to remove the top cover. It was she who became the place where the designers presented the name of the gadget and the features of its appearance. The style of the box is laconic. There are no bright inserts, unnecessary inscriptions. In short, modest, but tasteful. Indeed, looking at the packaging, you might think that it contains a premium smartphone, which is confirmed by the reviews. Asus ZenFone Live ZB501KL 32GB gold, for example, is sold in a box that is framed to match the body. The Rose color model uses pink packaging.

Now let's look inside. The first thing that the owner of a new gadget will see is the phone itself. It is separately packed in a special transparent bag that protects the case from mechanical damage. Under it lies the documentation with a coupon indicating the provision of a guarantee. The lower part of the box is divided into two compartments, which contain a key clip in the shape of a smiling smiley, a 1A power adapter and an interface cable (USB).

What users think about the look

Most of all, users were surprised to learn that the body of the novelty is made of plastic. In 2017, metal models began to appear even in the budget segment. They are unambiguous and look more stylish and are reliable. But the company's developers still chose plastic. However, in defense, it should be noted that the quality of the material is pretty good. Also, users paid a lot of attention to design. Numerous reviews are devoted to this topic. Asus ZenFone Live ZB501KL 32GB (black, gold, pink) looks standard outwardly. Glass with rounded edges is used on the front side. A frame of arched shape runs along the perimeter of the body. It is painted in the main color. Like the main surfaces, it is made of plastic. The main elements are arranged according to the standard layout. In the upper part there is a small "eye" of the camera for selfies, and next to it there is a light sensor. In the center there is a narrow speaker hole for conversations. On the left side of it, the developers have placed a stand-alone LED flash.

The control panel is located in the lower part of the case (under the screen). Three touch keys are displayed on it. Their designation is clearly visible, although the backlight is not provided. In reviews of the Asus ZenFone Live ZB501KL 32GB Black it is said that in the dark the buttons are completely invisible, but this does not cause much discomfort.

What's on the back of the case? Are there any specifics here? If you believe the opinion of users, the design is vaguely reminiscent of the "apple". The typical location of the main camera is in the upper left corner. A small "eye" of the flash is displayed under it. It, like the lens of the optics, is slightly recessed into the body, so there is no need to be afraid that their surface will be scratched. Users pay attention to the characteristic grooves found on the top and bottom of the lid. If the panel were made of aluminum and plastic, then there is nothing surprising in this. But the body of the phone is plastic, so this is most likely just a kind of design trick.

Also, many users liked that the manufacturer did not place its logo on the front panel, choosing a back cover for it. This place is optimal.

It's time to pay attention to the controls. Their convenient location is mentioned in many reviews. The Asus ZenFone Live ZB501KL 32GB Gold, Black and Rose have standard keys extended to the right side. We are talking about an oblong "swing" of the volume and a button that performs the function of on / off and blocking. They are made of metal and have a specific texture used in the ZenFone line. There is a tray on the left side at the top. It has two compartments for cards of a cellular operator of the "nano" format. One of these slots can be used for external microSDXC drives. There is nothing surprising in this, since it has recently been practiced in many gadgets. Naturally, the ZB501KL model has ports for connecting headphones (on the top) and micro-USB (on the bottom). The main microphone and stereo speaker are displayed next to the latter.

Ergonomics

In reviews of the Asus ZenFone Live ZB501KL 32GB, the owners also discuss ergonomics. Ease of use is an important criterion when choosing a gadget. What can you say about this model? Considering that the smartphone is equipped with a 5-inch display, then, of course, it has rather big dimensions. The height of the case is 141.18 mm and the width is 71.74 mm. But due to the thickness, which does not exceed 8 mm, the device belongs to the narrow category. The weight of the device is only 120 g. Most users claim that it is quite comfortable to operate with one hand, however, it should be noted that the surface of the panels is slippery, so the phone may accidentally fall out.

The build of the plastic case is excellent. No creaking or backlash was found during testing. All elements fit neatly. Also, users noted a high level of wear resistance. Even not the most tidy owners retain their original appearance for a long time.

Phone Asus ZenFone Live ZB501KL 32GB: reviews about the screen

Every smartphone owner understands that the main element of the gadget is the screen. The level of comfort of interaction will depend on its characteristics. How did the display score? By and large, no weighty remarks were made against him. The TFT-IPS matrix provides good color reproduction. HD resolution is sufficient for a 5-inch diagonal. The screen displays the picture clearly and colorfully. Sharpness, contrast and brightness at a comfortable level.

Color reproduction is good, but the Asus ZenFone Live ZB501KL 32GB is clearly not up to the premium devices. With the factory settings, users noticed an overstated white temperature. You can fix this yourself by going to the phone settings.

Wide viewing angles are a significant advantage of the model. Using this gadget, there is no need to constantly hold the smartphone at a right angle, so as not to distort the contrast. The backlight range is optimal. When working with the phone in the sunlight, you can set it to maximum, and in the dark, reduce the brightness to a minimum.

The manufacturer has installed an excellent sensor on the device. It responds to touch quickly and clearly, there is an oleophobic coating.

Software

Asus ZenFone Live ZB501KL 32GB is a smartphone that does not run the latest version of the operating system. The user is offered the sixth "Android". But one cannot fail to note the proprietary shell - ZenUI 3.0. It, according to users, is well designed. Has flexible settings, personalization options. The developers have brought the interface as close as possible to the "pure" "Android".

Users liked the ability to change the menu. Here you can set the font, background, wallpaper, icons. Due to the fact that the menu is rendered separately, all application shortcuts can be removed from the screen.

The standard equipment includes various services. From the pre-installed, users highlighted Service Center, social networks, ZenTalk, ZenCircle.

Asus ZenFone Live ZB501KL 32GB: Performance Reviews

This model is not heavy duty. The 400th Qualcomm Snapdragon processor is responsible for its performance. The chip consists of 4 computing modules. The core type is Cortex-A7. The maximum they can overclock is 1400 MHz. Currently, there are already more powerful gadgets, so the Asus ZenFone Live ZB501KL 32GB Black is, so to speak, middling. There are no problems with graphics reproduction, animation pictures do not freeze, since the Adreno-305 accelerator is responsible for them.

There are two modifications in the model range. Each of them has two gigabytes of "RAM". But the storage of the built-in memory is different. The hero of our review is equipped with 32 GB, and the younger one has 16 GB. If desired, the memory can be increased, however, in order to insert the drive, you will have to abandon the second SIM card.

Users in the comments claim that the gadget works well under average load. System failures are practically not observed. The launch of programs can sometimes be accompanied by micro-delays. There were no problems with watching videos in Full HD and even more so HD. However, the phone could not play the video in 4K quality.

Camera

Most of the positive reviews for the Asus ZenFone Live ZB501KL 32GB came from the cameras. A 13-megapixel module is implemented as the main one. It is complemented by a flash that allows you to take pictures at night. There is also autofocus, but reviews say it is rather slow. When describing the capabilities of the camera, you need to pay attention to the modes. There are a lot of them on the menu. As the manufacturer assures, each of them is optimally tuned to certain conditions. For example, extreme night mode or super HDR. The close-up shot is detailed. All elements are clearly visible. However, this quality can only be achieved in daylight. At night, the image will be somewhat blurry, and users have noticed that even choosing the HDR mode does not really save the situation - digital noise is still noticeable. The reason for this is the aperture index - f / 2.2. Indoor images are not detailed enough. But you can take a high-quality photo of the text without problems. The device copes with this perfectly. As for the recording of clips, their maximum resolution is 1920 x 1080 px. Frame rate - 30 fps.

The selfie cam also received a lot of reviews. Despite the fact that it is based on a 5-megapixel module, the images are of good quality. Moreover, users did not have any comments on the work either in the daytime or at night.

Now it's time to talk about the "chip" of this smartphone. The “highlight” of the gadget is the Beauty Live option. What opportunities does it open to users? During a video broadcast, you can now edit the image quality in real time. For example, a person can apply makeup to their face without additional editing.

Communication

As mentioned earlier, the Asus ZenFone Live ZB501KL 32GB smartphone can work with two cards of cellular operators. The tray into which they are inserted is hybrid. One slot is also intended for external drives. Pay attention, the device is capable of working with new generation networks - LTE. However, this feature is implemented only on one slot, while the second supports the 2G standard.

Manufacturers have not forgotten about wireless modules either. In order to be able to access the Internet, it is not necessary to connect to 4G. Wi-Fi is also suitable for these purposes. The phone acts as an access point. There are two ways to transfer files and other data. The first is via a USB cable, the second is using Bluetooth 4.0. Both methods work stably at an acceptable speed.

The navigation module is also implemented in the phone. The signal is established via BeiDou, GPS and GLONASS. The coordinates are determined accurately and quickly.

Battery life

But by what criterion does the Asus ZenFone Live ZB501KL 32GB receive negative reviews? Due to the battery life. The fact is that the manufacturer has installed a rather weak battery on the device. Its capacity is only 2650 mAh. Naturally, the fast charging function is not provided. It will take about three hours to restore the battery life. The connection to the network is carried out via a USB cable and a 1 A power adapter.

With active use, the phone will "live" until the evening, but at night it will need to be charged. The most energy is expended at maximum screen brightness. If it is reduced to at least 70%, then it will be possible to increase the operating time to 30-35 hours.

When using a gadget for games, it should be borne in mind that approximately 30% of the charge will be "consumed" in one hour. But when watching a video, switching to the "Flight" mode, you can count on 9-10 hours.

Let's sum up

So, after testing ZenFone Live ZB501KL 32GB, most users gave it a 4 on a five-point system. Such a high result was influenced by decent screen characteristics, good image quality, and the Beauty Live option. Of course, the price of the device played an important role. The cost in stores is approximately 9,000 rubles.

What kind of users have found advantages in this model?

  • Stylish, though not exclusive design.
  • Assortment of color solutions. The line includes the most popular tones.
  • Optimal dimensions, low weight.
  • A wide range of different settings in the camera menu.
  • A program for video broadcasting.

The advantages described can be decisive for many buyers, especially for those who do not have high performance requirements. However, despite this, the device also has a significant disadvantage - a modest battery. Also, advanced users were not very happy with the hardware, considering the installed processor already a little outdated. And finally, let's note that the choice of plastic for the case disappointed buyers.

Selfies are the most popular type of photography in the years since then, which is why some companies such as Asus produce models on similar subjects. Distinctive feature ZenFone Live ZB501KL intended for broadcasting from the phone using the front camera. At the same time, the cost belongs to the lower category of the middle segment.

ERGONOMICS

The arrangement of functional elements is quite standard for manufacturers of this brand. Above the display there is a flash, a front camera, light and proximity sensors, an earpiece, a notification indicator. The touch keys are located at the bottom of the front panel and do not have their own backlight.

At the bottom there is a microphone for conversations, speakers, a microUSB connector. Aluminum edges and panels are used to promote a solid construction and feel. Despite the components of the case, subtle plastic antennas are used. The back side has no mechanical elements except a camera with a flash close to the corner, the top half has the Asus logo.

The edge above the screen is equipped with a microphone and a headphone jack, while on the right side there is a combined volume control key and a power button. On the back there is a combined slot for a SIM card and microSD with a storage capacity of no more than 128 GB.

The screen of the Asus Zenfone Live ZB501KL smartphone looks quite bright and saturated with a 5-inch diagonal and a pixel density of 1280 × 720. The matrix is \u200b\u200bclosed with tempered glass. Despite the fact that now it is more efficient to use the resolution, this one is quite optimal.

The screen has good backlighting and sharpness of images, but color reproduction is problematic. The gadget is convenient for using outside the house during the day or in the dark. To adjust oversaturated colors, you can activate the Blue Filter mode, which allows you to make adjustments yourself. The viewing angles are also good and slightly distorted with significant deflection.

The expected moment in the Asus Zenfone ZB501KL are 13 Mp and 5 Mp lenses, respectively, as they have a number of useful functions. The rear lens is equipped with an aperture of f / 2.0 with flash, in practice the photos are good, but with problems in color reproduction and contrast. At night shooting conditions, the quality deteriorates greatly, noise appears and details are reduced.

The main feature of the camera is the presence of a special function Beauty Live, which allows you to correct your face in real time, for example, during a stream. As a result, the changes are clearly visible and allow for significant external differences. However, the front module cannot even record video at resolutions greater than 640 x 480, so fine details become invisible.

SOFTWARE

Zenfone ZB501KL is based on Android 6.0.1 system with manufacturer overlay that allows for more advanced operation of the work platform and controls. Compared to its predecessors, the proprietary addition has become closer to the base operating system. However, a few moments are enough to call various functions and the necessary set appears.

In addition to animation adjustments, app shortcuts and other desktop elements, you can completely change the style. There is a choice of fonts, colors, wallpaper selection, as well as other icon designs. In addition, the company's store has a lot of background images. There are pre-installed popular applications in advance, which can be removed immediately if necessary.

It is also equipped with a 2650 mAh non-removable battery, as well as a processor with low power consumption and a small screen resolution. Therefore, battery life should be sufficient for one day of moderate use.

OUTPUT

Thus, in practice, the device is very convenient and has all the necessary functions that are useful to an ordinary user, so it is more focused on a female audience. It is touted as an excellent device for transferring photos and videos in real time, due to which such tasks are performed quite well. Since there is a flash for the front camera, two microphones with noise canceling during recording, as well as high-quality speakers with a convenient 5-magnet design for high volume.

Asus Zenfone ZB501KL has a completely modern appearance, a metal frame with rounded corners and low weight. However, the battery life is not enough for long-term full-fledged work with high productivity, but the presence of a large number of power saving modes and functions can significantly extend the period of use. At the same time, the cost is very low, and in general, it is fully justified.

Disadvantages can simply not be found for this price category, there are only problems of a specific nature, for example, when using GPS.
