the iPhone 8 Plus is the most unfortunate example of a 5.5-inch smartphone. Why did I bring this up again, because it was already clear from the example of the 6 Plus? Because it perfectly demonstrates the relationship of the manufacturer to its fans: "Everything for them, so that they feel good, so that each new generation is more comfortable than the previous one." Aha!

The market is full of smartphones with the same screen, but in a more compact body. Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi have been particularly successful in this.

A smartphone is inconvenient anytime, anywhere. He can hardly fit into the front pocket of his trousers. If you still stuffed him there, got into the car and drove off, God forbid, they will call you. It is simply impossible to take the device out of your pocket and not cut into the post on the go.

However, the large display is really a boon. Surfing the web, flipping through the Instagram feed, typing on a normal keyboard - all this is much more convenient to do than on. When I used the latter, I caught myself thinking that I needed to stop and concentrate in order to type without errors. Plus allows you to use it in a more relaxed way.

How to show off now?

For the fourth consecutive year, the same front panel. Nothing, literally nothing new.

Oh yes! Apple is now claiming that the glass is 50 percent stronger. I didn't check it out, but I'm sure some of you will do it sooner or later.

But I checked the device for something else - for resistance to scratches and the new iPhone failed the test.

In just a week and a half of use, scratches appeared on the display and on the back cover. This is not a gate at all!

All changes at the back - now we have not smoothly polished metal, but tempered glass. But with an oleophobic coating, very high quality.

There is no exact information on the type of glass. They say this is the latest generation of Gorilla Glass, and this, if anything, is the fifth version.

This panel was installed at the back for one single purpose. The nosebleed smartphone needed at least some innovation, so it was decided to put wireless charging inside. True, this cannot be called an innovation, because "skis" have been actively using this technology in their flagships for four years now.

Since a special coil is used for this case under the glass, the battery had to be reduced. We write down 225 mAh as a loss (7 Plus had 2900 swings, and now it is 2675).

He's never black!

Have you looked at the "backside"? We already realized that black iPhones from the current line are now not to be seen. Now we have space gray or Space Gray. Actually, as it was before.

I personally don't like it. The back panel looks fine, but you can't say "wow".

With other colors, things are even worse. Look at the gold, the back of which is white in the light, in the room "rusty"?

The silver option is the most boring. For conservatives and those who are not at all embarrassed by the huge bezels on the sides of the screen.

Slips, but not so

One of the main tactile and visual iPhone 8 Plus specifications - it's still slippery, but it doesn't match its metal predecessor (not Jet Black). The glass on the back definitely adds grip. Well, how? Not much, by 30-40 percent.

However, due to its large size, dropping the smartphone to the floor and saying goodbye to both glasses is still a trifling matter. So buying a cover is a must.

If anything, iFixit has already disassembled the new product and gave it 6 out of 10 points on the maintainability scale. This means that if something happens, it will be more difficult to repair a new product than the same seven (7 points).

Playing louder

As in its predecessor, the sound comes from two speakers at once: from the main one at the bottom and the spoken one at the top. The latter sounds quieter, but adds good stereo.

The new Plus is louder than the old one. By 25% according to official statements. I will check this later in a separate review, where I will compare both generations of devices, but for now we take Apple's word for it.

The sound itself is of high quality and loud, not even above average, but rather closer to the maximum that I have heard. And of course the 8 Plus is slightly louder. Another argument in favor of buying an older brother.

Little things

The antenna frames are now very short and are visible only at the ends. If anything, the base of the case is made of 7000-series aluminum (it does not bend, that is), and Apple is also talking about some kind of "steel base". Apparently, it is inside the case.

The physical buttons are very neat and don't wobble in their grooves. No Android smartphone manufacturer pays attention to this - everything rattles like a rattle. But not the iPhone.

Don't be afraid for a protruding camera. Here we have a sapphire crystal, so it will be extremely difficult to scratch the lenses.

The display is nothing new. Almost ...

There's nothing new about the iPhone 8 Plus screen. Perhaps they added support for True Tone technology. The bottom line is that a special sensor next to the front camera monitors ambient light and adjusts the color temperature of the screen for a specific situation. In short, the screen becomes either strongly yellow (in a low-light room) or slightly yellow (in bright sun).

And no, this is not Night Shift. This setting works separately. If, of course, you activate it.

If we compare it head-on, it becomes obvious that the 8 Plus display is a little more pleasant in color. In the youngest, they are sharper and with a slight bias in a green tint.

A strong deviation along the diagonal axis shows that we are facing the most common IPS-matrix. Yes, high quality, no doubt, but it still floats in a whitish fog. This is not AMOLED for you.

Apple relentlessly claims that the screen is "Retina HD", that it's new and all so redesigned to support the P3's wide color gamut and all, but in fact the display easily blends in with its Optic AMOLED.

Nobody knows. Perhaps Apple has decided to change the tradition of naming its smartphones and who knows if we will see another S-series, some kind of iPhone. In the meantime, let's check out the new features and other features that make iPhone 8 unique and cool compared to other smartphones in 2017. Let's start reviewing the iPhone 8, let's go!

Appearance and design

The iPhone 8 design remains unchanged. This is the same iPhone 7, only in a glass case instead of an aluminum one. Apple decided not to bother with a new design, but simply focused on new technologies concentrated in the device itself. Thus, wireless charging appeared in the iPhone 8, thanks to the back panel of the smartphone, which is made entirely of glass. The glass transmits waves, which can charge the battery in the device. An aluminum cover would not provide the same result.

So, the front and back of the iPhone 8 is made up of tough, scratch-resistant glass that's covered in an oleophobic coating. And what about the side, at the end? The iconic aerospace-grade aluminum metal frame we remember from the iPhone 4 / 4S. So the design went back to 2010 when the Quartet was released. Strangely, Apple abandoned such an idea earlier, switched to metal monolithic cases and now came back to the old one. Are the ideas of innovation really over? As for the rest, the iPhone 8 remained the same as the iPhone 7. The Lightning connector was not cut out, although they did wireless charging. It will be possible to charge from it too. The 3.5 mm audio jack was not returned back, but this is obvious. All buttons and holes are in place.

the iPhone 8 received only three colors: black, silver and gold. The colors “rose gold” and black mat are gone. At the same time, the standard colors have also changed, for example: black - similar to Space Gray; and gold - more reminiscent of the color of Champagne, which was painted "like" gold cases for the iPhone 5, at one time; silver color - became brighter, it became lighter. Well, it's good that Apple decided to make the iPhone 8 in only three colors - like before.

Apple claims that the glasses are very durable, that such glasses have never been found in iPhones! And I don't know if you can believe it or not, but I think we'll all find out soon when we get new iPhones and start dropping them. I remember the days of the iPhone 4, when every second owner had a “beautiful” spider web on the back. And also, thanks to the durable and tightly welded body, the iPhone 8 has received an IP67 degree of protection against moisture according to the IEC 60529 standard and, like the iPhone 7, the iPhone 8 can be washed under the tap. Of course, I do not recommend doing this, I would not do this myself, but the fact that dropping the iPhone 8 into the water - we have some kind of guarantee that it will work as before.

Display

Thanks to the design retained, the iPhone 8's display hasn't changed much. It remains the same as in the iPhone 7. Except for some internal nuances. The new display is made using LCD IPS technology, thanks to which the viewing angle has become wider, and the maximum brightness has increased to 625 nit. Also noted is support for the DCI-P3 color space, which gives more accurate color reproduction and support for the HDR10 standard.
