There is nothing better, I have been choosing for a long time. Dream watch. There is nothing better, I chose Phoenix 3 sapphire for a long time

In addition to its attractive design, the new Garmin Fenix 3 sports watch also has an impressive list of features that no other Garmin device could boast of.

Garmin Fenix 3 Watch - Reviews

In addition to the usual GPS, barometer and compass, Fenix provides smart notifications, counts steps, counts calories, sleep status and uses Garmin VivoFit and Vívosmart fitness trackers. The gadget can upload data to the Garmin Connect site via Wi-Fi (without a computer) and download applications from Garmin Connect in the IQ store using a compatible smartphone.

Garmin Fenix 3 features and design

In almost everything, the new Fenix 3 is better than last year's model. The device is thinner and lighter, the 1.2-inch diameter has not increased, and the device itself has a color display with a pixel density that has increased almost 10 times. The water resistance mark has increased from 50 meters to 100 meters, making the watch perfectly safe for snorkeling or swimming in the pool.

The stainless steel case has five control buttons: three on the left, two on the right. On the left is the backlight control and scrolling up and down. On the right is the button acting as "Enter", the second - as "Back".

Expanded list of supported activities to include: XC skiing, ski / snowboarding, mountaineering, hiking, work, indoor work (no GPS), cycling, stationary bike, swimming pool, outdoor pool, water and triathlon (was previously on the Multisport list ).

There are also all the popular fitness tracker functions: calorie tracking and even the popular "Move!", Which periodically reminds you to get off the couch.

Garmin Connect, the new IQ store, allows users to download and install add-ons, third-party apps and widgets that further enhance the functionality of the new Fenix 3 watch.

Equipment

The Garmin Fenix 3 is available in three different configurations: gray with a black stripe, silver with a red stripe, or a top-of-the-line edition with a domed sapphire crystal.

Inside the box you will find a watch, a USB charger and cable, a USB power supply, and a quick start guide.

Performance

Pairing with a smartphone is optional, the Fenix 3 is quite a standalone device, but you need to register and create a Garmin Connect account if you want to save GPS data. The easiest way is the Garmin Connect app for iOS and Android. Several fields need to be filled in: gender, age, height and weight. Then you will be prompted to pair the watch via Bluetooth.

But almost all Fenix 3 settings are changed directly on the watch, and not in the app, which is not always convenient, since the watch has a much smaller screen than a smartphone. Developers would still have to leave the ability to control the device using the application. Then the use of the clock buttons could be left as a backup option, in case the phone is not at hand.

Using the Garmin Fenix 3

The Garmin Fenix 3 fits well on the wrist. The bright and vibrant new color display with a resolution of 218 x 218 pixels is also a significant improvement. While many smartwatches are nearly impossible to use in direct sunlight, the Fenix 3 wins in this regard. The graphics are sharp and crisp.

Initially, it may seem that the step counter is a superfluous function in the presence of GPS, since it can easily calculate the distance traveled, but the ability to turn it off and calculate the number of calories autonomously saves battery life.

The watch is capable of displaying notifications for e-mail and other applications - a very convenient feature that you quickly get used to.

Outcome

For hikers, runners, swimmers, cyclists and other sports people, the Garmin Fenix 3 watch will be one of the best gadgets. It also features hiker navigation, pace and cadence data for runners, and all the metrics professional riders need for serious training - the Fenix 3 is all in one watch.

The Fenix 3 is a lightweight watch, sleek, comfortable to swim with, and a dedicated bike computer that provides more data and is easier to read. For athletes who would like to keep track of all this without having to buy three pairs of watches and a bike computer, the Garmin Fenix 3 is the best option.

pros

 • Notifications.
 • Water resistant up to 100 meters.
 • IQ store and good functionality.

In this review, I will praise this watch. They came to me so much after a month and a half of active use that I did not reveal any shortcomings. Fantasy? No, just a personal subjective opinion.

When it comes to sports gadgets, one of the first brands that comes to mind is likely to be Garmin. The American company has long become a recognized authority among manufacturers of devices to support an active lifestyle.
Of course, the company makes all kinds of camping equipment. And this factor also influenced my choice to some extent, because from Garmin I have had an echo sounder and a navigator for a long time.

Why Ebay?

It's simple. New watches cost quite a lot of money. This is the same moment as in apple, the technique does not lose much in price even when new models are released.
On Ebay, you can buy a watch at a very tasty price, almost in perfect condition.
I confess that I had to monitor the proposals for a long time before I found the one I needed.
The point is that the watches are produced in different versions, and come with mineral and sapphire glass.
The difference in the price of new ones is quite noticeable, the difference in used ones is not always but! Often, watches with mineral glass have scratches, and sellers do not hide it. It's not a problem to buy, but I really wanted with a sapphire.
When I found what I needed at the auction, I placed a bid and was the only buyer.

The watch was delivered to me within 14 days.

It should be understood that there will be no guarantee for your watch purchased in this way for two reasons. Firstly, simply because you bought it not in Russia (without all sorts of rostets and checks), and secondly, the guarantee may have already ended.

But here the risk is minimal. It's just that in case of problems you can return, Ebay is quite loyal to buyers in disputes. One main point is that Garmin is a firm so reliable that you simply should not be afraid.

The watch came to me in its original box. Complete set according to the seller + a bonus in the form of an additional USB-cradle. Of course, the cradle can be bought separately if something happens, it costs only 500 rubles, this is, of course, if you want to store one at home and the other, for example, in the car or in the country.

Such is the beautiful packaging:

The box is like a matryoshka:

Complete list of equipment:

Clock
- 1A power adapter
- USB cradle
- Stainless steel strap
- Manual

The USB cradle is a special pad with contacts and a grip that attaches to the back of the watch and allows not only charging it, but also exchanging data with a computer.

Naturally, I have a power adapter with an American plug, it's not a problem to find an adapter, but it's enough to have at least a phone charger and charge it, which I do.

The manual is detailed, I don't have Russian. But even, if you know English, at least a little is not needed at all. The watch is simple to use and set up. And now you can easily download the manual.

The steel strap is not mine. I remember the feeling when this one clings to the hair on his arm. Plus it's very heavy. Yes, it is stylish, but I am for practicality and convenience.

It can be seen that it is in the factory film and the seller did not use it. And he did the right thing, IMHO.

Based on the saved workouts on the watch I found in history, the watch was purchased around the summer of last year. That is, at the time of purchase, they are already a year old.

Watch condition and appearance

Excellent. The glass is not scratched, of course. There are no chips anywhere. There are only Basel in the scratches and, I think, some will say: well, damn it is not very beautiful, but I closed my eyes to this fact, because with active wearing I myself have scratches, because you constantly touch something for hours, and in general, my opinion is that this is the case when "scars" decorate.

The reverse side of the watch. The body is partially made of composite polymer. Do not underestimate its durability, but from the hand it is very pleasant, besides, it is resistant to scratches.

As you can see, I do not have a heart rate monitor, but I do not need it and I did not consider the watch with it. After all, you can buy it separately.

The body is fastened with torx screws on the base:

Strap. The silicone strap is already installed in the watch. Well, there are no very high-quality words, just soft, pleasant. It is easy to clean, does not wash, is not afraid of frost and water.

The clock is controlled by means of 5 buttons on the case. There is a speaker:

But in a simple-hours mode up to 50 days of work.

These are really not empty words. For almost a month of using the watch just in watch mode, my charge dropped to only 40 percent out of 100, which is really surprising.

Additional Information

My main hobby is fishing. Since water permeability is important to me, I wore a Casio G-shock watch for a long time. The watch is great, but it's just a watch.
Compared to the Garmin, they weigh almost the same with a smaller thickness and diameter. Perhaps it is logical, the mechanism is all business ... But the phoenixes also have a battery inside.

The watch, of course, has a backlight. Even a separate button is allocated for it, although the same button also activates the lock of the watch, as well as its off and reset. It all depends on the duration of exposure to it.

Without backlight:

Backlit:

The watch is charged like this:

External software.

To begin with, whatever you want to install in your watch, you need to run through the garmin connect program. This program is free and can be installed on a computer or smartphone without any problems:

Connecting to a smartphone via bluetooth:

Syncing automatically copies your data from your watch to your garmin profile. This is very convenient, as you can then view the calendar of your activities and all training data:

For example:

My last swim in the pool. By the way, all workouts are customizable. You can change not only the units of measure (meters, feet, etc.), but also the length of the pool, track, circle, etc.

There is another program for customizing the face of the watch face. You can even put your own picture. The resolution is not very high, but what is depicted is clear:

You can change the location of the additional information on the watch face.

However, I consider this to be pampering, and I do not use this opportunity. In general, of all the dials in the library, I like the usual digital one.

As an example, an analog dial.

Arrows, color, etc. everything can be customized to your taste:

I also used this:

Just today I connected the watch to my smartphone, a new update was automatically downloaded. Garmin periodically updates the software, which is very good.

In addition to bluetooth, of course, the watch has wi-fi.

Navigation.

GPS connects automatically when you select a task in which it is required. Glonass is disabled by default:

Perhaps with glonass positioning will be more accurate and faster. But? Having crawled with a watch on Kola on vacation, I did not find any problems with navigating the watch. Even when driving, the watch finds satellites very quickly.

A very useful function for the watch is track recording. Yes, you cannot upload a map to them, but you don't need to. If you want a watch with a map, buy a Garmin Epix. Or just a navigator.
For what it is needed, I have already tested and I really liked it. Whether you are driving somewhere unfamiliar or you have been kidnapped (kidding), you can record a track. It will not be difficult to return back, or return to the same place soon.

The track can be viewed, enlarged using the buttons.

There is a trackback function to return to the starting point:

Multisport mode.

The watch was created mainly as a multisport watch, all programs were developed separately for each type of training with individual displayed parameters.
The watch is completely waterproof and with it you can dive up to 100 m.

All training programs are already pre-installed in the watch, here they are:

Skiing
-Snowboarding
-Rock climbing
-Mountaineering
-Paddleboarding (a kind of surfing)
-Power training
-Cardio
-Sports rowing
-Multisport
-Walking
-Cross-country walking
-Run
- Indoor running
-Bicycle
- Exercise bike
-Swimming in the pool
-Open water
-Triathlon
-Custom setting

As noted earlier, there are a lot of training regimes. For convenience, I left only those that I use myself, I just removed the rest from the menu:

In multisport mode, the watch also writes tracks. For example, if you run on a track or ski, they will record your path. They will also write down the parameters that are necessary to control the activities. A complete list of activities with data can be viewed, of course, in hours in the history section:

Smart watch mode

The watch supports platforms - Android, iOS, Windows Mobile via the Garmin Connect Mobile app.
View notifications - SMS, mail, calendar, weather, Facebook, Twitter, VK, telegram and other messengers. Configuring the required notifications is done through Garmin Connect Mobile.
The watch only allows you to view messages. By the way, the watch has vibro.

You can also control the music player through the watch.

Widgets.

You can put any widgets you want, there are a lot of them. Widgets are switched with the up and down buttons from the main screen:

Additionally, I set myself the position of the planets relative to the sun at the moment, you can even change the date in the widget and see what happens next. Well such

Sunset / sunrise:

I like this one, a calendar. Conveniently.

Convenience and tactile sensations

The watch, despite its seeming bulkiness, sits on the wrist like a regular watch, does not constrain the hand in any way and the buttons do not rest and do not press against the wrist when bending the latter. For one thing, if you have narrow sleeves and they are not adjustable, it will be a little awkward to take out the watch every time to use it. I personally had no problems with this. The buttons are pressed with little effort, but "soft".
Thanks to the backlight, information is visible even in complete darkness. In the sun, too, there are no problems with reading.
Sapphire crystal is really cool. especially in the pool, you take the watch out of the water, and it is "clean". Well, it's hard to scratch it, which is undoubtedly a plus.

Summing up, I want to say that in my opinion this is the best multisport and smart watch on the market.
But this would have been a loud statement if I had not held in my hands direct competitors, of which there are still not many.
Apple watch is a beautiful trinket that is fully friendly only with the iphone. In addition, they hold a charge for a flawed little - 16 hours. A beautiful screen - well, what for?
Samsung gear S3 - keep a charge longer, but overall much worse. 3-4 days it is something like this.
Suunto Ambit3 - no vibration, low screen resolution, does not work with android, etc.
Etc. If you force the Internet, then you can come to the same conclusion as me, and like many who eventually bought Garmin.

What are the advantages of this watch? Everything is unambiguous, from reliability and appearance to functionality and autonomy.
Cons ... Price? No, the price is really justified. Not very high resolution? High resolution is sacrificed for autonomy, and by the way, the resolution is quite enough, because everything is readable. This watch is not for entertainment, it is not a toy, it is a workhorse, although as for me it is still a stylish accessory for every day.
Put on a leather strap and you will have a business watch.

I finished.

I plan to buy +27 Add to favourites Review liked +79 +130

I've been a fan of Garmin Fenix watches since 2014, when I first bought the Fenix2. Later, with the release of a new improved model, I faced a dilemma: should I buy the next evolutionary model of the Fenix 3 watch or not?

I described my torments of choice in detail in my review on the site - "Garmin Fenix 3 vs Fenix 2 Comparison - Which is Better to Buy?" (read this link)

I talked about this in my review: "Why did I choose the Garmin Fenix 3" (read this link)

That's it, I found what I needed! Now I knew I couldn't find a better watch.

Until then, when in January 2016 Garmin dumbfounded me with a new release of the watch with a built-in optical heart rate monitor - the Fenix 3 HR.

Why is information about pulse? To know how quickly your body recovers after hard training throughout the dayand weeks.

A handy thing - the heart rate monitor is now always on your hand. You don't need to wear a cardio monitor on your chest to know the readings. It seems from the start. 🙂

What am I supposed to do? I already had a heart rate monitor for sports - HRM, HRM-Premium. The thing is, of course, comfortable and good. I "reviewed" about cardio monitors on my website - "Garmin HRM Premium - review, comparison, recommendations" (read here -)

If we take a closer look at the characteristics of the Fenix 3 HR watch, we will see that the new model is no different, only the presence of a built-in heart rate sensor, which is located on the back of the watch.

See the comparison chart that Garmin itself shows http://explore.garmin.com/en-US/fenix/

The next generation of watches received a built-in heart rate monitor in the Fenix 3 HR watch itself.

At the same time, the price of the new model has not increased much if you buy the Fenix 3 HR with a heart rate monitor. The price will be about $ 650.

Video review: Which watch to choose? Fenix 3 HR or Fenix 3

External differences between Garmin watches: Fenix 3 - Fenix 3 HR.

Watch case.

The placement of the fastening screws, the case with the dial of the two models are almost identical.

The watch is almost the same thickness. However, in the Fenix 3 HR, the optical heart rate sensor protrudes on the back cover. It is he who increases the dimensions of the watch. However, on the hand itself, the watch with a cardio sensor does not stick out at all.

As soon as you unfold the watch, you will immediately see the built-in optical heart rate sensor. The heart rate sensor protrudes slightly from the case and glows green when the sensor cannot detect the heart rate.

Especially for this sensor, the contact pad of the watch has changed. It now has a recess for the sensor. Although the charging block itself is at par with the power supply of the Fenix 3 watch.

Due to the convex sensor, you will not be able to charge your watch through the pad of your old Fenix 3 watch.

Glass, belt.

The Garmin Fenix 3 HR comes with Sapphire crystal as standard.

Why Sapphire version? To be honest, it was because of the glass that I took the old version of Fenix 3. I saw enough photos of people from the Garmin forum, who showed the scratched glass of the dials of simple models. I could not come across such messages about the Sapphire version.

By the way, read the detailed review of the Garmin Fenix 3 Sapphire version and look at my website here -

How else is the previous version of Fenix 3 Sapphire different? It is a durable glass and metal bracelet in the color of the case and a rubber wrist strap.

By the way, the new Fenix 3 HR also has a rubber strap. As far as I understand, this is done on purpose so that the watch fits snugly on the hand and the heart rate readings will be more accurate.

The two watch models are easy to distinguish by the rubber strap.

The Fenix 3 HR has fewer strap holes than the Fenix 3.

I tried changing the strap to a metal bracelet on the Fenix 3 HR - as a result, I got "holes" in the heart rate graph, since the watch and bracelet did not fit snugly on the wrist.

The use of a rubber strap for some Fenix 3 HR watch owners will cause the hand to sweat under the strap in the hot summer months. For me, a metal bracelet in the heat - solved all the issues. The hand was not hot and comfortable under it. Perhaps it was because I did not wear the bracelet watch tightly.

So if you want to know your heart rate on your wrist, you will have to wear a Fenix 3 HR watch with a rubber bracelet.

Some "observers" wrote that their belt was torn and not comfortable. I don't know what they did with the watch - but I didn't have such problems in 2 years of daily use.

In addition, the very shape of the rubber watch strap is very convenient for fixing on the hand.

What else can you distinguish between the Fenix 3 - Fenix 3 HR models?

Along the small hole of the clock sensor hole. The new Fenix 3 HR has a different hole shape.

That's all about the external differences of the watch itself.

Watch operation, battery, used operating modes Fenix 3 HR, Fenix 3.

The new Fenix 3 HR has the same 300 mAh battery. Do not forget that now, the watch will consume more power to constantly measure your heart rate.

Of course, Garmin used tricky methods to reduce heart rate consumption, I did not notice any deterioration in the quality of heart rate measurement on the arm. The pulse was shown constantly. Although, if you look closely at the graph, I saw some breaks in the lines.

I do not know what it was connected with, maybe I changed the position of my hand, maybe the watch could not read my pulse.

You can get your heart rate in a separate widget in the clock. You can see the minimum, maximum and average heart rate for the last 4 hours.

What "surprised" me is that there is no way to see the heart rate readings for a day (24 hours) or for 8, 12 hours in the watch itself - I could always see only the last 4 hours.

If you click on the Start button on the 4-hour heart rate chart, you will see your chart for the week with your average heart rate.

Why exactly 4 hours? Unclear. This issue has been raised several times in the Garmin user forum. But there is no response from the developers.

But don't despair. This information is not lost. Through Garmin Connect Mobile, you can see your full chart for the day, broken down by activity type. Activities and sleep are superimposed on the pulse graph.

The only drawback is that you can only see it on a smartphone.

If you want to view your heart rate data for the day, there is no such information in the Garmin Connect Web service.

I will summarize the problem in 4 hours. I don't know why you can't see your heart rate for the day, but I think Garmin will soon fix or improve the presentation of heart rate data in the next firmware.

I have not found more new activity programs in the Fenix 3 HR watch.

And I described all the functionality of the Fenix 3 watch on my website -

And for convenience, I created a site - a cheat sheet, on which I collected all the materials that relate specifically to watches Fenix 3 - this is a site with the address

Everything you knew about the Fenix 3 is now almost one-on-one with the Fenix 3 HR.

This applies to activities, dials, settings, GPS.

So the good news is that if you owned a Fenix 3 and bought yourself a Fenix 3 HR, you don't need to learn new things.

I am anticipating your questions and will immediately answer your future questions:

1 question: I want to use the HRM-RUN running heart rate monitor, how will the heart rate monitor on the Fenix 3 HR work?

Answer: If you connect any external heart rate monitor, priority always comes from any type of external heart rate monitor, not the built-in watch sensor.

Garmin itself points out that readings from an external body heart rate monitor are more accurate than data from a hand.

2. Question: Can I train with the Fenix 3 HR without an external heart rate monitor?

Answer:Yes you can. The pulse will be recorded during exercise.

For running, you can only see your heart rate and cadence. These indicators will be less than for the belt that is responsible for running - HRM-RUN.

Here's what you get when running with the Garmin HRM-RUN external heart rate monitor.

3 ... Question:Will the heart rate monitor work on the watch if you swim?

Answer:No, it won't work. The heart rate sensor works only in air. If you need to know your heart rate in water - use a swimming heart rate monitor - Garmin HRM-Swim - read my review:

3 ... Question:How long does the Fenix 3 HR battery last?

Answer: From my own experience, I will say that the clock works less than Fenix 3 by about 10%.

4. Question: Has anything changed in navigation?

Answer:Everything is the same - all watches use GPS, GLONASS.

5. Question: Have you added something new to the watch?

Answer:In addition to the built-in optical heart rate sensor, the watch also sends heart rate data to other Garmin devices. To do this, you need to go to the menu: Settings -> Sensors -> HR on the wrist -> Send HR data.

If you have a navigator or another tracker, then it will be able to receive data from the watch.

SUMMARY: Buy Garmin Fenix 3 HR or not? 🙂

Which is better: Fenix 3 HR or Fenix 3?

If this is your first time buying a watch, I would definitely buy the new Fenix HR model

If you already have an old model - Fenix 3 - I would not rush to change the model to another. It would be better to buy a special pusometer for my workouts. For running - HRM-RUN, for swimming -

Fenix is a series of multisport watches with smart features. Phoenixes combine stylish smartwatches, sports heart rate monitor, navigation computer for hikers and climbers. Garmin has managed to make a watch that has become popular with everyone who leads an active lifestyle. If you want a sports watch with a premium look and not a “plastic toy”, then this series is for you.

It will be about the third generation - Garmin Fenix 3 and its modifications. They have been produced for a long time - since 2015, and the Fenix 5 series has already been released, but Fenix 3 has not lost its relevance. Filling and functionality were ahead of time.

Equipment

The scope of delivery of the watch depends on the selected version. Standard set:

 • Operation manual, warranty card
 • charging cable / USB

Optional:

 • extra strap
 • chest heart rate monitor

There are many different versions of the Fenix 3, as well as replacement straps and bracelets. Here are the main ones:

 • Fenix 3... With mineral glass, red and black silicone straps. Heart rate chest strap, depending on equipment.
 • Fenix 3 hr... The main difference is the HR sensor located on the wrist. Mineral or sapphire crystal with titanium, metal or leather straps.
 • Fenix 3 sapphire edition... Watches with sapphire crystal, all the listed types of straps and bracelets, as well as a chest heart rate sensor, depending on the configuration.

Appearance and screen

All phoenixes have a metal case with a diameter of 51mm and a thickness of 16mm. Weight depends on the version of the watch and the strap - from 82g with a rubber strap to 186g with a metal strap and sapphire crystal.

The screen is recessed into the body, protected by a metal bezel. Ordinary mineral or sapphire glass - again depends on the version. In practice, both options are durable, scratches do not appear even with careless wear.

Operated by 5 buttons. There is no sensor.

Color screen 1.2 "(30.4mm) with a resolution of 218 by 218 pixels. Not the brightest and much inferior to the Apple watch and Samsung gear in saturation, nevertheless, it is perfectly visible in sunny weather. The backlight is turned on with a button, or by raising the clock.

Autonomy

Garmin is pleased with the 300m / Ah battery, which lasts 40 hours in UltraTrac mode (hike mode), up to 16 hours in GPS training mode, up to 3 weeks in watch mode and up to 2 weeks in smartwatch mode.

Functional

Fenix 3 has so many features that listing them would be boring. We divided them into the most popular sports and described the features.

A handy feature is the Connect IQ app (it's like the App Store or Google Play, only for Garmin watches). Applications for expanding the functionality of watches, styles of design, dials - everything in this application.

For communication and synchronization, the watch has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The sensors are connected via ANT +.

Swimming

 • The body can withstand pressures up to 10 atmospheres - you can swim and dive.
 • Determination of swimming style.
 • Counting strokes and distance.

The built-in sensor does not measure heart rate in the water, it requires an HRM-Swim or HRM-Tri chest strap.

For indoor swimming, you must set the pool length. In open water, distance is measured via satellites. There will be a slight error in the readings - the watch loses its signal under water and again catches it when you raise your hand. This is the norm for all sports gadgets.

Run

Modes "running" and "running indoors". Each is customizable.

Phoenix Runners have it all:

 • Customizable reminders for meals and whatever.
 • Pace.
 • Pulse.
 • Automatic cutoffs for whatever you want.
 • Vibration and sound signals.
 • Intervals.
 • Ready-made training plans.
 • Training and recovery efficiency.
 • Control music on your phone.
 • Estimation of maximum oxygen consumption (VO2Max).

The Garmin brand has long and successfully been producing devices that help with sports and simply track physical activity. It is convenient when one device is able to collect and analyze information related to different sports. Below is an overview of the Garmin Fenix 3 watch line.

In addition to the basic model, the Garmin 3 line includes devices marked Saphire and Saphire HR. These models differ slightly in appearance and belong to the premium segment. They have a sapphire crystal, and the Garmin Fenix 3 HR model has a heart rate sensor in addition to glass. In addition, there is a difference in the belts from the kit and in the available colors.

As before, the device has a large size and a solid body, as well as a striking sporty design. In addition, the list of features has significantly increased in the Garmin Fenix 3, previously they were not presented in any device of the brand. In addition to the barometer, GPS, compass, smart notifications, the third generation of watches has learned to access the company's website via a Wi-Fi network and download or upload data about its activity to it. Also, the user can install a number of applications from the official Connect IQ store.

The device is suitable for athletes, regardless of the type of their sports activity, as well as for people who love high-quality and expensive things. At the start of sales, the price was about $ 400, which is more than the watch from Apple. But given the capabilities that Garmin Fenix 3 offers, the high price tag is justified.

Contents of delivery

The Fenix 3 series watches have a fairly rich package bundle. In addition to the watch itself, you can find in the box charging dock (unique to the model), power supply with USB connector for charging from the mains, documentation, chest strap for measuring heart rate.

The uniqueness of the charger for the Garmin Phoenix 3 watch is that the protruding heart rate scanner on the bottom of the watch will not allow it to be combined with docking stations from other devices.

Battery capacity 300 mAh, which guarantees 50 hours of operation without connecting the watch to satellites. With GPS on, the battery lasts for 20 hours. In watch mode - 6 weeks.

Due to the fact that Sapphire HR already has built-in heart rate monitor, in its kit, the user will find an additional strap instead of the chest version with a built-in monitor, which comes with simpler models.

For the Garmin Fenix 3 Sapphire model, the kit also differs the presence of replaceable plastic straps.They are necessary for practicing some sports, because by default watches are sold not only with the best glass, but also with a metal bracelet.

Appearance

In general, the design of the watch resembles military style... This is a massive metal case, no hidden screws, a lot of weight. But, despite this, the watch looks impressive on the hand and makes it clear that this is a high-quality and expensive thing.

Due to the fact that the display of the model is not touch-sensitive, on the case you can see 5 physical buttons- three on the left side and two on the right. Each of them is signed. Upper right - sync with devices / start, lower right - exit the selected mode / return one step back. Left side from top to bottom:

 • backlight.
 • up the menu / enter the settings,
 • down the menu.

A long press on the brightness button will turn off the device or select a mode without notifications, in addition, with its help, the device can be locked.

The display has a diameter of 1.2 inches with a resolution of 218 * 218 pixels. is he monochrome, which saves energy, but backlighting for 8 to 60 seconds eliminates the problem completely. In standard mode, the display shows the time, the user's activity is constantly shown.

The device has a 10ATM water protection class - this guarantees diving to a depth of 100 meters, that is, swimming or scuba diving without taking off your watch is quite possible.

All three models in the Garmin Phoenix 3 line of smart watches are similar in characteristics, but differ in configuration and appearance. For a better understanding of the difference, a table is presented below.

Functional

Connect IQ app helps you customize not only the display, but also the widgets... Each of them is a small screen with information for a specific application. Among the useful widgets:

 • pedometer;
 • altimeter (height sensor);
 • weather;
 • social media notifications;
 • the last sport;
 • music;
 • barometer;
 • compass;
 • body temperature.

This is not a complete list, the device configuration is very flexible and allows you to make the most useful and effective device.

Fitness Mode

All Garmin devices are built first for athletes... Already in the second version of the watch, a large number of sports modes were available, so that any user could choose the option that suits him. In the third version of the watch, this approach was not only retained, but also expanded.

Daily activity

In addition, all your indicators can be seen in the widget, the goal is displayed here and how much is left before it. There is a red bar at the bottom of the display, which fills up if the user is not active. When it turns completely red, the device will signal to the owner that it's time to be like. Cleaning of this indicator is carried out by passing a distance of 100 meters.

An interesting point is that the watch analyzes the number of steps taken by the user, and increases or decreases the goal, and also sets values for the week. At the same time, it is impossible to completely cover the goal with a long walk on the weekend - the device offers to distribute the goal for each day.

Apart from daily monitoring, Garmin 3 has many modes for practicing different sports:cross-country or downhill skiing (snowboarding), hiking, running, rock climbing, cycling in open space and indoors, similarly swimming - open water or a pool. Each mode can be configured as a separate widget, up to 10 at a time. Each mode configures from 4 to 14 parameters.

Important! You cannot scroll through widgets during training. To do this, you need to exit training mode.

Sensors

Garmin watches have a variety of built-in sensors and support for connecting third-party devices Among the built-in ones are Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, altimeter, accelerometer, barometer, GLONASS.

Besides, via ANT + standard connections with sensors from other manufacturers can be made. This is required for some modes. For example, if you are exercising indoors on a stationary bike, you might want to record cadence readings on your watch. A total of 7 external sensors can be connected.

For navigation, the watch uses a connection to satellites via GPS, however, for higher route accuracy, it should be parallel use GLONASS, Russian navigation system. You need to enable it manually, as only GPS works by default. According to numerous reviews, the location readings are wrong by a maximum of 3 meters.

It should be understood that connecting to both navigation systems affects the battery life, but the autonomy does not decrease so much as to save money.

Altimeter, barometer and compass

The device works with 3-axis compass, which determines the direction even if the watch is not moving. The barometer records changes in pressure and generates a short-term weather forecast, which is important for hiking or climbing a mountain. Also, in the latter case, an altimeter is indispensable, which allows you to control the altitude while climbing or climbing. All three sensors automatically calibrated using GPS, the watch automatically switches to another time zone. For more accurate air temperature information, you can connect an external thermometer using ANT +.

Sleep

Here the device has some flaw. Owners of models without an HR prefix, that is, without a built-in heart rate monitor, note that the sleep analysis is what is displayed night time travel schedule... At the same time, the device does not show whether the user got up or simply changed position in a dream.

The built-in heart rate monitor performs the function of monitoring sleep more accurately, it understands from the heart rate that the user is asleep or awake. Using the HR version, you can see the phases of light and deep sleep on the graphs, as well as the moment of awakening.

Regardless of the version of the watch, the data has to be adjusted, and all reviews agree that the control of night activity is not the strongest side of the model. In addition to inaccurate data, the watch is quite bulky, and not every owner decides to leave it on his wrist at night.

Software

For more flexible customization of the device, the manufacturer has developed Garmin Connect applications, which works with Windows 10 Mobile, Android and iOS. The application, according to user reviews, is very high quality, and there are a lot of options for customization.

Advice! When paired with MyFitnessPal, you can, among other things, indicate the food eaten, which makes the process of setting goals for training even more accurate.

In the Connect IQ branded app store, you can choose from a variety of apps that are created by both the company and third-party developers. In particular, you can download new watch faces, smarter stopwatches and other useful programs.

Smart watch

Given the fact that all Garmin watches, including the Fenix 3, are made for athletes, the smartwatch mode is inferior to competitors, for example, a device from Apple. On the watch display, when connected to a smartphone, you can view short messages, see letter headers, and receive call notifications. In addition, you can configure to receive notifications about events from the calendar. Useful is smartphone player control function... You can also configure your watch to control the Garmin Virb action camera. There are about 50 applications that can be installed on the watch, but their number is growing. There are even 2 games among them.

Advantages and disadvantages

The model has an order of magnitude more pluses than minuses, and the latter include a high price, a large size (the watch looks too bulky on a small wrist), and inaccurate sleep data. Also, some users say that the chest heart rate sensor is not very comfortable.

 • strong body;
 • fit comfortably on the arm, despite the size;
 • capacious battery;
 • high accuracy of location tracking;
 • high-quality display;
 • clear interface;
 • a huge number of sports modes;
 • waterproofness;
 • the ability to connect via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ANT +;
 • a very large selection of applications and settings that, without exaggeration, cover all possible indicators.

Conclusion

The device can rightfully be called one of the best in its environment. For athletes and especially those who goes in for sports professionallythe Garmin Fenix 3 is a great companion. In this case, the high price is quite reasonable. At the moment, you can buy the device in numerous online stores, including the official Garmin market. The price starts from 30 thousand rubles.
