Modem tp link wr841n. Two-antenna aristocrat - we configure the TP-LINK TL-WR841N router. Manual network configuration

Hello! Nowadays, most users install Wi-Fi routers at home. Firstly, it is extremely convenient, unless you are a fan of getting tangled in wires and being tied to one place. Secondly, with the purchase of mobile gadgets, it becomes necessary to have unlimited high-speed Internet at home. Otherwise, every time you have to run to a cafe with Wi-Fi to download the game to your phone. And this is not at all serious, is it?

Why all this fuss around routers? Few people know how to set up a Wi-Fi router so that the connection is stable, powerful and fast. Using the TP-Link router model TL-WR841N as an example, we will tell you how to set up a tp-link router at home without calling a specialist.

A few words about the model with which we will be working today. Without a doubt, this is one of the best deals on the router market, which at one time was bought for 1200 rubles. The router is relatively inexpensive, but it can provide you with a full Wi-Fi connection throughout your apartment.

How to connect TP-Link TL-WR841N router?

  1. So, you became the proud owner of a router and brought it home with joy. Opening the box, you will see many different pieces of paper inside, a disk with instructions in electronic form, as well as the router itself, a small power supply unit for it, a network cable for connecting to a home PC.
  2. The question of how to set up a tp-link router does not bother us yet. First you need to connect this device, everything else later. Place the router near your computer in a convenient location on a stable surface. In principle, it can be installed in the hallway, and even in the kitchen - if only there is enough wire. Since the included network cable is usually not very long, place the transmitter near your PC or go to a computer store for a larger cable crimp.
  3. Connect power to the router, plug it into a power outlet. Then plug the internet cable into the blue WAN socket. Note that there are four LAN ports. Therefore, it will be possible to connect four PCs at once via a network cable (if necessary). We connect the computer with the router using the cable that came with the kit.
  4. To make it clear to you, let's briefly go through all the connectors and buttons of our router (picture below):

1) This button can be used to turn the router on and off.

2) Power cord.

3) WAN connector, required for internet connection.

4) LAN connector, through which we connected the router to the computer.

5) Enabling the QSS option.

6) Emergency button (it is a pity that it is not red). Resets all router settings.

TP-LINK network equipment is well known both in Russia and abroad. For those who "grew" from the capabilities of inexpensive single-antenna devices, the manufacturer offers a mid-range wireless router - TP-LINK TL-WR841N. At only half the price of a single-antenna TP-LINK TL-WR740N, it offers twice the speed of wireless access at 300Mbps. The internal filling of the router will allow not only providing an apartment or a private house with the Internet, but also deploying a local network of a small office. The model has already undergone several modifications and is still being produced. What are the differences between routers of different years of release, how to connect and configure them for the most efficient work - the topic of our article.

Description of the TP-LINK TL-WR841N router

TP-LINK TL-WR841N is a router designed for use in a home or small office. It allows you to connect clients to the Internet both via cable (twisted pair) and wireless (Wi-Fi). Four computers can be connected via cable, and any number of clients via Wi-Fi. However, with each device connected via Wi-Fi, the access speed will drop. If one client can work at 300 Mbps, two - already at 150 Mbps, and so on.

The router comes in a colorful box painted in the manufacturer's colors

The router has been on the market for over ten years; during this time, eight generations (revisions) of this router have been released. Each version has two versions - with a removable and a fixed antenna. A router with a detachable antenna is called TL-WR841ND, where the letter D (detachable) indicates that the antenna can be disconnected and replaced with a more powerful one.

Appearance and equipment

The body of the router is trapezoidal, with strongly rounded corners, the white color of the plastic gives the device airiness and weightlessness. Earlier versions of the antennas were black, while the 2017-18 models were equipped with light gray antennas. On the top panel there is a black insert that hides the LEDs - indicators of the device's activity. Power, wireless activity, wired data transmission, and internet connection status are displayed.

Router activity indicators display the modes of operation at any given time

The router comes in a large colorful box of corporate colors, but the package bundle is modest:

Specifications

Almost all revisions of the TL-WR841N router have 32 megabytes of RAM, four megabytes of permanent memory for storing settings and firmware, and a processor that, in addition to computing functions, controls the operation of the wireless communication module and the network switch. The last two versions of the router (the tenth and eleventh), in addition to a faster processor, have doubled the amount of RAM, which is now 64 megabytes. If you plan to use the router in an office with a large number of connections, it is better to buy the latest revision model.

It should also be noted that early versions of the router were equipped with a CPU cooler. Later models do not have it, therefore, in the warm season, with increased load, the router may overheat and "hang". The way out is to install a small radiator, for example, from a faulty motherboard.

A passive heatsink on the processor will allow the router to work reliably even in hot summer

Video: TP-LINK TL-WR841N router overview and configuration

Preparing the router for work

In order for TP-LINK TL-WR841N to connect all your devices into a single home network and provide each client with Internet access, a number of preparatory measures must be taken. The router must be connected with cables to the provider's network and home computers, and the network cards of the clients must be programmed to automatically receive addresses. After that, you can configure access to the Internet and create a wireless network.

Connecting a router, preparing for configuration

The router connection diagram is simple: the provider's cable is plugged into the Internet socket, computers of the local network - into the LAN1-LAN4 network connectors. Smartphones, tablets, and other wireless devices connect using a Wi-Fi network.

To create a home network, the TP-LINK router has 4 wired ports and the ability to establish an unlimited number of wireless connections

Configuring a computer network card to work with a router

A DHCP server is automatically activated in the router "out of the box" - the router will itself issue network addresses to connected computers. Therefore, before starting to configure the router, it will be useful to make sure that the network adapter of your computer or laptop is configured to automatically obtain an IP address.

  1. Right-click on the "Start" button and select "Network Connections" from the user menu.

Open the network settings window from the Windows start menu

  2. Select the required adapter in the network connections window and open its properties using the right mouse button.

The properties of each network connection contain the TCP / IP protocol settings set for it

  3. Select TCP / IP settings from the list of protocols and open them for editing.

All parameters of the network adapter are specified in the TCP / IP settings

  4. Configure the automatic acquisition of the network address and DNS server addresses, and then click OK.

The mode of automatic receiving of addresses is configured by setting the corresponding checkboxes in the mode switch

Entering the router settings, default login and password

The modem's web interface, through which most of its settings are performed, is located at 192.168.1.1. Username is admin, password is admin. Change the access password immediately after turning on the router for the first time... This will protect your network from outside interference.

  1. Open the web interface by entering 192.168.1.1 in your internet browser.

The home page of the router's web interface contains its system statistics

  2. Go to the System Tools section, and from it select Password.

In the system settings section of the router there is a submenu for setting the login and password

  3. On the page for changing authorization data, enter the current login and password in sequence, and then their new values. The password must be confirmed to avoid accidental errors.

To enter a new password, you will have to remember the old one

  4. Save the changes with the Save button.

Internet connection settings

The router's web interface allows you to configure an Internet connection both in a semi-automatic (using the setup wizard) and in a completely manual mode. Before starting the setup, make sure your internet connection is activated by your service provider. To do this, try connecting to the Internet without a router by plugging the provider's cable into the computer's network card.

Connect the ISP cable to the LAN socket of the computer to test the connection

Configuring L2TP connection

L2TP is a type of VPN in which the "tunnel" can be established not only over TCP / IP, but also over lower-level interfaces: ATM, X.25, and Frame Relay. L2TP provides encrypted traffic, so this connection is more commonly used on corporate networks than for private Internet connections.

PPPoE connection setup

Connection via PPPoE protocol is the most common among Internet providers, and it is easier to configure it than the others, since only a username and password are required from the authorization parameters.

PPTP setup

Configuring a PPTP connection is no different from the L2TP configuration discussed earlier. In the same way, two types of connection are supported: with static and dynamic addresses. Login, password and VPN server name are enough for authorization. Please note that this type of connection creates a heavy load on the router processor... If your tariff plan provides for a connection with a speed of 90 Mbps or higher, you should think about buying a new, more efficient router.

Static IP configuration

If you connect to the Internet with a static IP address, your login and password are not required. In the parameters of the created connection, you enter the address received from the provider, the subnet mask and the gateway address, after which the router is ready to work.

Router parameters settings

After connecting to the provider, you need to set the parameters of the internal network - configure the distribution of Wi-Fi, addressing in the local network, port forwarding, etc. If necessary, you can change the firmware version or return the router to factory settings

Setting up Wi-Fi (creating an access point, setting a password)

Enabling and configuring a wireless access point will allow you to distribute the Internet to devices with a WI-FI module: laptops, tablets, smartphones.

The password set for the wireless network is used by the router to encrypt the transmitted data. The more characters in the password, the more reliable the encryption, but also the higher the load on the router processor. The optimal key size is 8-13 characters.

Port forwarding

Some users need to get access from the resources of their local network from the Internet. This can be access to home network folders, a picture from a home IP camera, remote administration with the Remote Administrator or Team Viewer programs, and the use of a dozen more necessary applications. To organize the possibility of such access, so-called port forwarding is required, when a router connects a port on an external network to a specific port on an internal network. Setting up port forwarding is easy using the functions of the router's web interface.

Setting up IPTV (digital TV)

Setting up IPTV allows you to select one of the four network ports for transmitting a digital video stream to it. It will be possible to connect a network media player, Smart-TV or digital TV set-top box to this port.

Video: PPPoE and IPTV setup

Local area network LAN and DHCP

If you are not satisfied with the default local network settings, for example, due to the presence of one more router in it, you can always change them in the appropriate section.

Firmware update for TP-LINK TL-WR841N router

Updating the internal software will help resolve bugs, improve performance, and improve the stability of the router.

  1. Check the revision of your router, this information is on a sticker located on the bottom cover of the device.

A memo located on the bottom of the case contains information about the router's revision and the firmware number

  2. Download the firmware from the TP-LINK ftp server.

The manufacturer's website contains firmware files for all revisions of the router

  3. From the System Tools section, select Firmware Upgrade.
  4. Use the "Select file" button to specify the path to the firmware file and click the Upgrade button. The router will start the update procedure, which will take about 10 minutes.

After finishing the installation, you can make sure that the version of the router has changed

Be extremely careful when choosing a firmware file... Software from a router of a different revision or even an older version of the software may make your device completely inoperable when installed. It will be possible to restore it only at the service center.

Configuring TP-LINK TL-WR841N in Repeater Mode

The stock software does not support switching the router to the repeater (repeater) mode. If you decide to use the TL-WR841N to expand your wireless coverage, you can try installing the DD-WRT alternative firmware, in which the repeater mode is configured in just a few clicks.

  1. Install the DD-WRT firmware using the firmware update function.
  2. Disable the WAN interface and DHCP server on the "Installation" tab (section "Basic Settings"). Enter the network settings information of the extender. The device must be on the same network as the main router. We will have a network 192.168.128.0/255.255.255.0, the gateway to which is the machine with the address 192.168.128.5. It is also a DNS server. For the future Dir-300 repeater, a free address 192.168.128.2 was selected, which is not distributed by the DHCP server.

Enter the network address, subnet mask and gateway details to configure the repeater

  3. Specify the wireless network type as “Bridge Repeater”, and enter the network name on the main router for the wireless network name. We have this network DizAr_net. Save the settings again.

Activate repeater mode in Wi-Fi settings

  4. Go to the Wi-Fi tab and select the same encryption algorithm and network key as on the main router.

Network security parameters are set on the Wi-Fi tab and should be the same as on the main router

Unfortunately, DD-WRT firmware does not support all TP-LINK TL-WR841N models. Update images for revisions 3, 5, 7 and 8 can be downloaded from the project site.

Factory reset

You may need to reset the router to factory settings if the device does not work correctly and access to the web interface is impossible. Fortunately, all TP-LINK routers have a hardware factory reset option.

How to restart a router

The easiest and most effective way to reboot the router is by turning off the power. Unplug the AC adapter from the outlet, wait five to six seconds, and then plug it back in.

Router TP-Link TL WR 841 ND is a popular device on the market, mainly used for home. It can be configured without any special knowledge or equipment. Now let's take a closer look at this process.

We collect and connect the device

It looks like this:

After purchasing, you need to make sure that it is complete. A TP-Link wireless router must contain in the factory packaging (in addition to the router itself) a power supply (hereinafter referred to as PSU), a patch cord (a short cable with a connector for a network card, needed for direct connection to a computer), and a disc with instructions. Having made sure of the integrity of the kit, we proceed to the next stage.

We start to connect to the network

We collect the device and connect to the network
This router allows you to do without wires, but you still have to tinker a little to connect with them. So, we do the following:

  • Carefully opening the original packaging, we take out a set of our equipment. Tip: Compare the current and voltage readings on the power supply with the factory parameters (description in the documentation). There are times when manufacturers put inappropriate models in the kit. The use of a power supply unit with other current parameters will negatively affect the router - it may fail prematurely.
  • We take the PSU and connect it to the router through the appropriate connector (TP-Link WR841N has one round shape, so it is impossible to make a mistake).
  • We insert the PSU into the 220V network. The device must fit snugly to avoid short circuits. Therefore, it is undesirable to insert it into the sockets of the old ("Soviet") design.

  • Press the power button on the router. If the device is in working condition, the indicators will light up. The first one on the left should be constantly on, and the one next to it should blink (this signals the readiness of the device for operation).

Tip: if the bulbs do not light up, try connecting the power supply to another device (most have standard connectors). If it works, the problem is in the wifi router, otherwise in the block itself.

  • Next, we connect the cable from the provider to the router. It needs to be inserted into the WAN connector. If the 4th light starts to light up, then the Internet is available.
  • We connect the router and PC (or other device) using a patch cord. We install the first end in any of the four LAN connectors of the router, and the second in the PC network card.

We reset all parameters to factory values

This procedure is mandatory if the device was purchased "hand-held". Because there may be a non-standard TP-Link WR841ND firmware, or simply incorrectly set parameters. However, it is not uncommon for devices in their original packaging to be configured incorrectly. This is due to the fact that they can be tested in stores.

So, to bring the settings back to the "default" values, press the WPS | Reset button and hold it for half a minute. The router will reboot - this will signal that a reset has occurred. If you make fatal errors while trying to configure the TP router, this procedure will reset everything to its original position.

Working with the interface

Before entering the router settings, make sure that one of the standard browsers is installed on your computer. So, once in the browser, enter these numbers in the address bar (top field): 192.168.0.1. This is the default router address.

Please note: there is also a universal address for all models from TP-link: http://tplinklogin.net.

After entering any of the addresses, press the "Enter" key. This will open the user interface in which you need to log in. At this stage, you need to enter the standard layout "admin" in the "Username" and "Password" fields. At the end, click on the login button. As a result, we will get to the interface, where the TP-Link WR841ND is actually configured.

Login may fail for 2 reasons:

  1. incorrect settings of the network card (old drivers, disconnected board, etc.),
  2. equipment malfunction.

Change the default password

This procedure is optional, but if you live in an apartment building, then there is a high probability that neighbors will start using your Internet. In this case, its speed will be very much reduced (almost like a modem). The change is made as follows:

· In the user interface, click on the "System tools" section, then "password".

· Enter user data "by default" (admin).

· Then we enter a new username and password. Duplicate the e values \u200b\u200band confirm the changes by clicking on the "save" button.

We connect to the Internet

Before setting up a TP-Link router, you need to find out the type of connection (in most cases, this is enough to call the customer support service). You will also need user data from the provider.

Dynamic connection

Usually set by default. If a different type is specified in the interface, then in order to set the dynamic one, you need to do the following:

· In the "connection type" menu, click on "dynamic ip-address".

· Click on the "define" button.

As a result, the system will load data after a while. When finished, save the changes

PPPoE connection

This is the most popular connection method used by the main Internet service providers in the CIS countries. Having looked at the user data, we do the following:

· We enter user data (from the provider, not from the Wi-Fi connection!).

· We confirm.

· Put a tick next to "Connect automatically" and save the settings.

Static method

A more complex method for TP-Link WR841N, for which you need to know a number of data: ip-address, main gateway, subnet mask, DNS. Usually these parameters are spelled out in the contract from the provider, so problems should not arise. If a connection from the current provider has already been organized on your computer, this data can be found in the parameters of the network card. To do this, you need to find it in the device manager and write out the parameters presented above. You can also contact the subscription service of the provider and request these characteristics.

We go to the WAN connection type, set the "static ip-address" method and enter the characteristics presented above. Leave the default value in the MTU size field only if the agreement does not say anything about this clause. We set the secondary DNS: 8.8.8.8 (this is the Google server). At the end, we press the "save" button.

Don't forget to update the firmware

The software for network equipment is constantly being improved, so it needs to be updated. To do this, just download the required distribution on the developer's website (tp-linkru.com). Before flashing the TP-Link WR841N router, look down the case and find out the hardware version (denoted as Ver **, where ** is the version number).

Having entered the site, we select the version we are interested in and download it. In order not to lose the settings, you need to update the firmware only using a network cable through a computer. That is, you need to disconnect the WAN cable (from the provider) and connect the router to the computer via a patch cord. And then we proceed according to the instructions of the installation program.

The initial task when buying a new router is to connect it correctly. The rear panel of the WR841N has five inputs for network connectors. Four yellow ports are used for cable connection of devices (computers, laptops, TVs and other electronics equipped with an Ethernet connector). The fifth port - blue, is necessary to connect the Internet to the router and its further distribution within the home network. Therefore, the cable that was pulled into the room by the provider must be connected to this connector. Then it will be enough to insert the router into the outlet and press the power button.

To configure a TP-Link WiFi router, you need to open any internet browser and go to the device control panel. It can be accessed by one of the following IP addresses: 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. This combination of characters must be entered into the address bar of the browser. If you do not know which address is set as the standard one, you can check it on the bottom panel of the router. You can also use the universal address tplinklogin.net, which will automatically redirect you to the settings panel. The standard username and password are used to log in: admin.

If the system does not accept the standard login information for the TP-Link WiFi router control panel, it may have been changed earlier. You can clarify the current username and password in the company that connected the Internet and pre-configured the router. If this is not possible, it is recommended to perform a factory reset. To do this, find the "Reset" button on the rear panel of the router, which does not protrude beyond the frame. Then press it with any thin oblong thin object (for example, a toothpick) and hold it for about 10 seconds. After resetting the settings, there will be no problems with the login.

On successful login, the initial status tab is displayed. On it you can view data on your Internet connection, current wireless (WiFi) settings and traffic statistics.

In most cases, no additional steps are required to connect to the Internet. The connection is established about a minute after turning on the WR841N router with the cable connected to the blue input. You can check the connection status on the "Status" tab, in the "WAN" section.

If the connection is not established, you need to specify additional parameters when configuring TP-Link. You can do this not in the "Quick setup" tab, but specify the data in your copy of the contract with the provider.

Select the type of connection specified in the contract or specified by the provider. If it was not possible to find out the type of connection, but you have an account name and password, click "Auto-detect". The WR841N will scan the connection settings and display the recommended connection type.

Determining the type of connection on a TP-Link router usually takes no more than 20-30 seconds.

After that, you need to enter your account information and click "Next". When the WR841N WiFi router is restarted, the Internet connection will be established according to the parameters you specified.

Once the connection is established, any cabled devices can access the Internet through the WR841N. The order of the cable connection does not matter, even though the ports on the back of the device are numbered from 1 to 4. For example, you can connect a computer to port 2 and a TV to port 4 (it is not necessary to use outputs 1 and 2).

WiFi setup

The key step in configuring the WR841N router is setting the WiFi parameters. To do this, open the first menu item on the "Wireless Mode" tab. In the "Network name" field, you must enter a name under which the network will be displayed in the general list when searching for WiFi. Next, select your country in the regional settings. This affects the list of frequencies on which data transmission will be carried out. It is recommended to leave the “Channel” item unchanged, at the “Auto” value. With such settings, the router will independently select the WiFi transmission frequency, depending on the current load (occupation of certain frequencies by neighbors). It is also advisable to leave the default settings in the "Mode" and "Channel width" fields so as not to limit the maximum connection speed.

The checkbox "Enable wireless router broadcasting" enables data transmission via WiFi; if it is disabled, the wireless connection cannot be established, but the network and Internet access are preserved in wired mode. "Enable SSID Broadcast" makes the network name public. If you uncheck this checkbox, your WiFi will go into the hidden networks category. To connect to it, you will have to enter not only the password, but also the name.

In the next step, open the "Wireless -\u003e Wireless Security" tab. By default, the Disable Protection option is selected in this menu. This means your WiFi is open (no password is required to connect to it). It is recommended to change this setting to “WPA-Personal / WPA2-Personal” and set a network password.

It is important to realize that encryption settings provide not only access to the network, but also the security of its use. Even if you don't mind if your WiFi is used by outsiders (neighbors, colleagues), access without encryption carries significant risks. Information in open networks is transmitted in its original form. This means that passwords, payment data and other confidential information will be available to any network user. For the same reason, it is not recommended to enter personal data when connecting to the Internet via public networks.

In the fields "Version" and "Encryption" leave the values \u200b\u200b"Automatic", and in the "Password PSK" section enter the desired access key. The more complex the password, the less likely it will be cracked in the event of a hacker attack. We recommend using mixed case letters (uppercase and lowercase), numbers and special characters.

In order to use the new settings, you will need to click on the specified link and confirm the WR841N reboot.

The reboot process of the TP-Link router takes about 30 seconds. After that, the setup page will be updated.

Security Settings

To maximize WiFi security, it is recommended to disable the QSS function. It allows you to connect any device without entering a password, within two minutes after pressing the WPS / Reset button on the back of the device. Although this option is convenient, critical vulnerabilities have been discovered in the QSS protocol, which can lead to unauthorized access to the network. At the moment, it is with the use of this function that the largest number of hacking of TP-Link routers is carried out. To change these settings, go to the QSS Function tab, click the Disable button and reboot the WR841N router.

If you want to continue using this connection method despite the risk of a hacker attack, in the same menu you can change the connection settings or add a new device programmatically. To do this, it is enough to enter the PIN-code of the connected equipment or select the item “Press the button of the new device within two minutes” to activate the QSS.

The next important option to ensure network security can be enabled in the "Wireless Mode -\u003e MAC Address Filtering" menu. When filtering is enabled, it can operate in two modes: "Allow access to stations specified in the list" and "Deny access to stations specified in the list". Select the option you want and enable filtering. The changes will be applied after the router is restarted.

If you choose the first option, you can prevent individual devices from connecting to the WiFi network distributed by this TP-Link router. To do this, enter a combination in the "MAC address" field, which can be specified in the next step. In the “description” field, write the name of the device that you understand, and change the status to “Enabled”.

You can also choose the second option. When using it, only devices that are whitelisted will be able to connect to the network. As in the case of adding to the black list, you will need to enter the MAC address and device name, and select “Enabled” from the “Status” drop-down list.

While this method increases security, it does not guarantee complete protection against hacking and third-party connections to your WiFi. WiFi connection data can be intercepted and extract the MAC address of your device. After that, the cracker will only need to change the address of his computer to the received one, and he will be able to enter the network.

You can find out the MAC addresses of the connected devices in the "Wireless Mode -\u003e Wireless Statistics" menu. It contains only devices that are connected via WiFi. It also displays statistics of work on various computers and gadgets (the number of received and sent packets). In addition to obtaining the addresses of your devices, this menu can be used to control unauthorized connections. For example, if the WiFi speed on your WR841N router has dropped and you suspect that someone else has connected to your network, you can check this in this menu.

You can change the address of the router's admin panel in the item "Security -\u003e Remote control". There you can also set a new port for connecting to TP-Link, but it is better to leave this setting unchanged. After saving the new IP address, you will need to reboot your router.

After configuring your TP-Link WR841N router, it is recommended to save the parameters in a separate file. You can do this in the System Tools -\u003e Backup & Restore tab. The configuration parameters will be saved in bin format, and you can restore them through the same menu. Such a need will arise if in the future you will make incorrect changes to the settings or they will be accidentally reset using the "Reset" button on the rear panel.

Tutorial Video: The Easiest Way to Set Up Your TL-WR841N Router

Our today's article is for those who are going to purchase or have already bought a Tp-link TL-WR841N router. We will take a step-by-step look at the entire setup of this router - connection parameters, wireless network, security key on Wi-Fi, accompanying the process with photographs for clarity. Also, all the settings described here are suitable for the TL-WR841ND model. Therefore, if you follow our instructions, it will only take you a few minutes to set up your new router.

This is a successful and therefore quite common router model among users, the quality of which fully justifies the price. In my opinion, this is the ideal home networking option that will cover all their needs. My copy has been working for more than three years, distributing the Internet to many devices via Wi-Fi, and during this time I do not remember any interruptions with the Internet due to its fault. On this page there is my review of the Tp-link TL-WR841N and feedback on its work.

So, the router is already in front of you, it's time to start setting up. Here is a list of the setup steps we go through:

  • Connecting the router to the computer.
  • Setting up Internet access.
  • Setting up a Wi-Fi network on TL-WR841N.
  • Security key (password) of the Wi-Fi network.
  • Change administrator password.

The power cable plugs into a suitable socket on the router and, of course, into an outlet. There is an on / off button next to it - it also needs to be turned on. The LED indicators illuminated on the front panel will tell you about a successful start.

You can connect the router to a computer for configuration in two ways. If it is near the computer, it is best to do it with a lan cable.

One end of it plugs into the connector of the computer's network card, the other into the subscriber port of the router (yellow ports, labeled as LAN).

Accordingly, the blue connector (WAN) is intended to receive settings from the provider. We will include the cable coming from the transmitting equipment or your modem into it.

The second way is to connect your devices over Wi-Fi. It happens that there is no way to connect to the router with a cable - be it a damaged network card, the location of these two devices remote from each other, or other reasons. Or maybe someone does not have a computer at all - then you can carry out the setup process using a tablet or smartphone connected to the router via Wi-Fi.

Usually, the Tp-link TL-WR841N router comes with a disc with a pre-configured configuration for configuration. In this case, we will not need it - our task is to learn how to configure the router through its management interface.

So, we check: your router must be connected to a computer (or other device) by any of the above methods, and a cable from the provider's equipment must be inserted into the WAN port. Now you can start setting up.

Setting up Internet access on the Tp-link TL-WR841N router

To switch to the router control interface, you need to go to the browser on your computer (another device from which you are configuring) and type in the address field 192.168.1.1 ... Then you will see a prompt for admin password - defaults admin / admin... In case you did not succeed in any of the above, here you are.

And when the settings page opens, you can immediately. This is optional - that is, you can update at any other moment or not at all.

If a settings at 192.168.1.1 will not open, orthe admin password will not work, or the settings you made are unsuccessful - resetting the router to the default settings will help you. A recessed Reset button is located between the antenna mount and the fourth subscriber port of the router. Without turning off the power, push it with a pen / needle or something else sharp and do not release it for about ten seconds. When all the indicators go out and light up - the router is reset, you can release the button and start the setup process again. Or try to solve the problem in one of the ways given in the articles: and.

The first thing we need to do is to enable the router to connect to the provider's equipment and get the settings from it that are necessary for accessing the Internet. Without this, further customization will be meaningless.

On the control page, select the menu NetworkWAN... A list will appear WAN Connection Type, in it you will specify the type of connection. You can find out from the provider's support which one you need: Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, L2TP, or PPTP. If this is a dynamic IP, then this choice - after saving by clicking Save the router will go online.

If your provider tells you one of the options PPPoE, L2TP, PPTP or static IP, you will need to enter the necessary data - IP address, gateway and DNS addresses, username, password - it all depends on the specific type of connection. You can also get this information from technical support or find it in your contract for the provision of Internet services.

If you have previously used some kind of high-speed connection to access the Internet, you can safely delete it. Now this function will pass to the router, and you will no longer need to manually establish a connection.

In addition, the provider can bind your end devices to the account by the MAC address. You can also check with our support staff. If the binding exists, you can inform the MAC employee of your router indicated on the sticker on its bottom panel. Another option is to clone the MAC of the network card to the router (Network menu - MAC clone) or manually change it on the router.

This configuration step ends when your router gains access to the Internet. If everything worked out, save the settings with the button Save and go to the next step. And in case this stage of the configuration was unsuccessful, we recommend the instruction: When setting up the router, it writes "Without access to the Internet", or "Limited".

Setting up a wifi network and protecting with a security key

To set up a Wi-Fi network, we need to go to the menu WirelessWireless Settings... Here in the line Wireless Network Name enter the name of the network by which devices trying to connect will search for it. Below is the dropdown list Regionwhere you need to select your country of residence. All of the following settings on this screen can be left unchanged.

Save the settings again via Save.

To protect your network from unnecessary connections, we recommend setting a security key (password). Go to the menu WirelessWireless Security... We put a label opposite the line WPA / WPA2 - Personal (Recommended)... IN PSK Password enter the password, which will now be requested from each device trying to access the network of your router. Also, installing a Wi-Fi security key is described in detail in this article.

When a password is invented and assigned, save immediately by clicking Save.

Change administrator password

We already had a publication on how to change the standard admin password, which gives access to the control page of the Tp-link TL-WR841N router. Now, while we are still on the management page, you can immediately change this password. This function is needed so that any user working through your network cannot log into the router and make any changes without your knowledge.

This is done in the menu System ToolsPassword... You will be prompted to enter your existing authorization data, and then a new admin username and password. It is allowed to keep the name admin unchanged, and create a new password and write it down somewhere in an inaccessible place so that you don’t forget it and someone else doesn’t recognize it. These settings are also saved with the button. Save.

This completes the configuration of the Tp-link TL-WR841N router. Now all that remains is to reboot it so that it can get the settings from the provider. Reboot is done through the menu System Tools - Reboot, or by simply turning off the power for a few seconds.

After reboot, the wireless network is activated. To connect to it, use the network name and security key assigned earlier in the configuration process. Even if you configured the router, for example, from a laptop, by connecting it via a lan cable, now the cable can be removed and connected to the network via wifi.

We sincerely hope that you did not encounter any difficulties when setting up an Internet connection, but if it did happen, here are our publications on this topic: "Without Internet access" in Windows 7 and "Connection is limited" in Windows 10.

You probably have any questions or feedback about the operation of the Tp-link TL-WR841N router. Leave them in the comments.
