Android users are familiar with the concept of recovery - a special mode of operation of a device, like the BIOS or UEFI on desktop computers. Like the latter, the recovery allows you to perform non-systemic manipulations with the device: reflashing, dumping data, making backups, etc. However, not everyone knows how to enter the recovery mode on their device. Today we will try to fill this gap.

There are 3 main methods to enter this mode: keyboard shortcut, download using ADB and third-party applications. Let's consider them in order.

In some devices (for example, Sony of the 2012 model range), there is no stock recovery!

Method 1: keyboard shortcuts

The easiest way. To use it, do the following.

  1. Turn off your device.
  2. Further actions depend on which manufacturer your device is. For most devices (eg LG, Xiaomi, Asus, Pixel / Nexus and Chinese B-brands), simultaneously holding down one of the volume buttons along with the power button will work. We also mention some non-standard cases.
    • Samsung... Hold the buttons "Home"+"Increase the volume"+"Food" and release when recovery starts.
    • Sony... Switch on the device. When the Sony logo lights up (for some models, when the notification light turns on), hold down "Volume Down"... If it didn't work - "Volume Up"... On newer models, you need to click on the logo. Also try to turn on, hold down "Food", after vibrations, release and often press the button "Volume Up".
    • Lenovo and newest Motorola... Clamp at the same time "Volume plus"+"Volume minus" and "Inclusion".
  3. In recovery, control is performed with the volume buttons to navigate through the menu items and the power button for confirmation.

If none of the above combinations work, try the following methods.

Method 2: ADB

Fast, efficient and does not require a computer or power off the device.

Method 4: Quick Reboot Pro (Root only)

A faster and more convenient alternative to entering a command in the terminal is an application with the same functionality - for example, Quick Reboot Pro. Like the option with terminal commands, this will only work on devices with installed root rights.

The above methods of entering recovery mode are the most common. Due to the policy of Google, the owners and distributors of Android, access to the recovery mode without root rights is possible only in the first two ways described above.

As with any operating system, Android has a special boot mode where the device turns on but the system itself does not boot. This mode is called Recovery Mode, or in Russian, the recovery mode. This mode is available in any Android device and allows you to reset the parameters, change the firmware, restore the firmware from a backup, or just in case of a freeze. It is noteworthy that, unlike root-rights, using Recovery Mode is not dangerous, therefore it is not blocked by the developer in any way. This function can be used by absolutely everyone and completely officially. Let's take a closer look at how to enter recovery on any device running Android, and what each item of its menu is responsible for.

Recovery Mode gives access to system functions of the device

Ways to enter Recovery mode

On the device itself

The standard way. The principle of entering Recovery Mode is the same for all devices - when turning on, you need to hold down several buttons. Most often this is the volume up, but the following options can also be found:

  • Samsung - turn on + volume up + "Home".
  • LG - turn on + volume down.
  • Google Nexus, HTC - turn on + volume down, then tap Recovery.
  • Certain Lenovo, Motorola models - turn on + volume up + "Home".
  • Sony - power button, after double vibration, hold down the volume up.

If for some reason you cannot enter Recovery Mode by standard means, try to clarify in the instructions. The listed combinations work in almost all cases and will work both for entering the standard recovery menu and for the custom one. In addition, it can be started even when the tablet does not boot or the system freezes.

If you have root rights, you will need the Terminal Emulator application installed (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id\u003djackpal.androidterm). After installation, you will need to allow superuser rights and enter two commands: first su, and then reboot recovery. The device will reboot.

Via computer

A prerequisite is the enabled debugging mode via USB (Settings - For Developers - Debugging via USB, or select the appropriate item when connected to a PC). Therefore, if this mode was previously disabled, the tablet does not start, it will not work to use it.

You will need the ADB Run program (http://cloud-androidp1.in/Android/PC/Project_Site/AdbProgramm/), a cable, and a working device.

  1. Connect your device to your computer.
  2. Start the ADB Run program.
  3. In the program menu, press 4 in sequence and then 3.

The device will reboot into Recovery Mode. You can perform the procedures you want.

How to use Recovery Mode

As we already said, there is both a standard recovery and a custom one. Many experienced users argue that the capabilities of the former are rather scarce, so it's better to install an unofficial one. We will talk about them a little later, but now we will analyze which items of the Recovery Mode menu you can find on your device.

Install zip from sdcard - installation of the archive with updates saved to the memory card. Through this menu, root rights are obtained and the firmware is performed.

Wipe data / factory reset - erase data / factory reset - complete cleaning of the system partition, reset all settings to their original state. All applications and settings will be removed, but the media will remain intact. Used for critical errors, system crashes or when new firmware is running. Particularly effective when the device does not turn on.

Wipe cache partition - cleans the system cache - the system partition that stores temporary files and all program settings. It is recommended to do it when the firmware changes.

Backup and restore - system backup and restoration from previously created backups.

Mounts and storage - for correct operation, all partitions of the system must be properly mounted and connected. Often, this procedure is performed automatically, but sometimes something has to be corrected manually. You can also clear one of the sections. We recommend using this method only in case of a specific need, otherwise the file system will not boot and the tablet will not work.

Advanced - additional settings, including restarting Recovery Mode, clearing the dalvik cache, resetting system application permissions. Most often used by professional programmers.

Management, unless otherwise specified, is carried out through (going through the list) and power supply (selecting a menu item). In some cases, selection occurs with volume up, and scrolling - with volume down. In any case, the system necessarily indicates how to manage the menu sections. There are developments with touch control.

Informal Recovery

As mentioned above, the standard Recovery Mode very often has somewhat limited capabilities, so it is best to use third-party, unofficial developments. The most popular are two of them - ClockworkMod recovery (abbreviated as CWM) and TeamWin Recovery Project (abbreviated as TWRP). Both developments have excellent functionality and allow you to very quickly and conveniently modify or change the firmware, get root rights, reset the settings to factory defaults, or restore a backup copy.

CWM looks very much like the standard one, only with a slightly different arrangement of menu items. Navigation through the menu is carried out with the volume buttons, and the choice is through the power button. There is a version with touch control. Well, TWRP has an unusual tiled interface and is controlled via a touch screen. Navigation through the menu is done by pressing the display, and you need to confirm the action with a swipe. Some Android devices have one of these recovery installed either by default or with the standard one. Installing and downloading custom recovery may differ depending on the model, so look for information in the sections about your tablet model on specialized forums.

Conclusion

More experienced users of Xiaomi devices running Android already know what Recovery and Fastboot modes are and what they are for. Therefore, this manual is aimed rather at beginners who want to learn a little more about the technical side of the device or have decided on the firmware. So what is it Recovery and Fastboot on Xiaomi, how to turn them on and off?

1. Recovery Mode

Recovery mode, or recovery mode, is a special menu that allows you to perform some actions with your smartphone. There are two types of them: stock and custom.

Stock Recovery

Installed with the official, factory firmware. It is rather scarce in its capabilities. Usually there are only 3 functions: (clearing the Data section) and connecting to Mi-assistant (Connect with MIAssistant).

Custom Recovery or TWRP

This is Recovey from third party developers. It is installed by you yourself, instead of the stock one (sometimes, sellers install non-official firmware, for example from MIUI Pro and therefore, most likely, you already have a custom Recovery).

It looks completely different. Usually, when loading into it, the language selection menu first appears, in which there is, including English. Actually, you need to choose it, unless, of course, you speak Chinese. The selection might look like this:

Or like this (here we can perform several tests, as well as, immediately get into recovery or fastboot):

Here are the wipes of various sections ( Wipe), and the ability to create a backup ( Backup) any information on your smartphone (including IMEI), and most importantly, what it is used for most often is the firmware ( Install). And in general, there is still a lot of interesting things. We will not dwell in detail, because this topic is very broad. Perhaps we will make a separate instruction on it.

How to log into Recovery?

This is done very simply:

  1. Turn off the smartphone
  2. We hold down the volume up button and power. We hold until the download starts.

Navigation through this menu is performed using the volume keys. Confirmation of the selection - the power button. Custom Recovery also supports touch.

How do I exit Recovery?

  1. Find the item Reboot, select it and confirm with the power button.
  2. If, for some reason, the first point did not work, then just hold the power button for a long time.

2. Fastboot mode

Fastboot mode - required to connect your device to a PC for flashing, installing custom Recovery, etc. We can say technical mode for deeper work with a smartphone.

How do I log into Fastboot?

To enter fastboot mode on smartphones Xiaomi, it is necessary:

  1. Turn off device
  2. Press the volume down and power button. Wait for the smartphone to vibrate and release them. A rabbit in a hat with earflaps should appear.

How do I exit Fastboot?

  1. You must hold the power button for 15-20 seconds. The phone will restart and your normal desktop will appear.

We hope this tutorial will help beginners deepen their knowledge of the technical side of a smartphone.

Recovery inAndroid

How to manage menus in Android?

After the successful launch of the recovery window, the user should continue to work with it by choosing the necessary actions.

Please note that there are no auxiliary keys in the window and you cannot navigate between its tabs using normal touches.

The side buttons of the phone and the Home key are used to control the system menu. Move up and down or left and right using the volume keys.

Confirmation of selection is pressing the Home button.

To exit the recovery, click on "Power". Remember, never disable the system menu until the process has finished.

This can seriously harm your device (cancel the firmware update and data recovery).

Start the phone after disconnecting or use the keys to restart in the system menu itself.

If the volume keys do not work on your gadget, you can connect a regular mouse to the device using a cableOTG and easy to manage system menu.

Explanation of mode names

Depending on the manufacturer of the device, the design and placement of the tabs may differ, but the set of functions and control principle remains the same.

In 99% of cases, the recovery menu is displayed in English.

In order not to be mistaken with the choice of the desired item and to perform the correct setting of your phone, read the explanation of each option first:

    Mounts with Storage Is a tab for memory management. With its help you can format partitions of disk space or view the degree of use of internal and additional memory;

    Reboot system - forced reboot of the device at the moment. In practice, this feature allows you to quickly save your smartphone from most software problems without having to reset to system settings. After a reboot, all user files and applications are saved;

    Install from SD - starting the installation mode of the archive with the firmware, which is stored on the memory card. If you want to manually flash your smartphone, you must first download the ZIP archive from Android to the card for your device and then use Recovery to start the OS reinstallation process;

    Wipe Cache Partition - clearing the device cache. Note that this function works much more efficiently than any third-party program for clearing the cache and temporary files;

    Factory Reset (or Wipe Data ) - return the gadget to the factory settings. As a result, you will receive a smartphone with the firmware version that was installed by the manufacturer. All files and user programs will be removed. The settings are not saved either. Before performing this process, we recommend that you create a backup of your data and upload it to the cloud;

    Backup or Restore - start the backup mode of the device data or select a copy to restore user files and settings.

Stock and Custom Recovery. What is the difference?

Wait for your smartphone to be recognized in the installed program and click on the “Other download” tab.

In the field "SDK Tool" check all the suggested options and save the changes. Wait until all packages are installed and close the program.

Now you can proceed to installing custom Recovery.

To install the third party TWRP recovery menu, you will need the downloaded custom version archive.

Don't forget to choose your device model and manufacturer.

Save the resulting archive in the memory of your PC - any directory and system disk. Follow the instructions:

1 Make sure your smartphone is included and the bootloader BOOTLOADER is unlocked;

2 Install and Run Android SDK Utility on PC;

3 On your smartphone, enable Quick Install Mode. To do this, press the Volume Down and Power On keys simultaneously until the icon with the robot appears;

Phone to computer connection field follow these steps:

  • Open the folder with the downloaded custom Recovery firmware. It must be in IMG format. Click on an empty space inside the firmware folder while holding down the Shift key. The item will appear in the drop-down list. "Open in command window"... Click on it:

  • In the command line window that appears, enter the command "FASTBOOT FLASH RECOVERY FIRMWARE_NAME.IMG" and press Enter. Note, FIRMWARE_NAME.IMG is a unique name for the file with the custom Recovery image, which is located in an open folder on the computer.

The installation result will be displayed.

After installation, try running a new Recovery. To do this, use a unique keyboard shortcut for your smartphone or tablet.

Detailed instructions for launching the recovery menu are described at the beginning of the article.

After the first launch, you need to select the interface language and the theme you like... Unlock the screen by flipping to the right to allow changes. Continue using the updated with a convenient Russian menu for updating the OS, resetting to factory settings or managing memory.
