Wi fi router modem. Setting up a router via a mobile modem. ASUS RT-AC51U - technology for high-speed wireless connection

Router or router - a specialized device for connecting a local (user) network and a global (Internet) network - manufactured with a different set of functions.

Therefore, router manufacturers provide more and more new products every day.

How to choose a router for a 4g modem

The essence of each router is the redirection of information from the global network to the local one, i.e. establishing "routes" for information. Each contains a list of "routes" from one network to another or from one router to another. The purpose of this list is to create a network with optimal and short paths from one part to another.

Of course, the Internet can be connected to a personal computer (PC) with an ordinary cable from the provider, if an ADSL line is not used for this, a router is not needed. But its task is to provide more devices with the Internet.

When choosing a router, remember that they come in different types, functions, and configurations.

The main criteria to pay attention to:

Connection via provider's cable or via 3G \\ 4G modem

Variants of routers are available in which two types of ports are provided, and it is recommended to give preference to them. If the choice is on a model with only one, decide which port you need.

Of course, the option with a modem is more compact and more convenient. Indeed, unlike a USB connection, you do not have to pull a cable, you just need to purchase a modem and connect the modem to the router. It is advisable to use 4G, because in it the Internet speed is much higher compared to 3G.

Network cable or Wi-Fi connection

Models are available in which modules for distributing a signal via Wi-Fi are provided, they are more convenient and more in demand. But some people still have computers in operation that don't connect to Wi-Fi.

There are 2 ways to solve this problem: buy a kit that contains network cables for connecting to a PC, or buy an additional Wi-Fi receiver for a PC.

Models with antennas designed for a Wi-Fi signal work in two channels at once (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) or only in one. Before choosing a wireless router for yourself, be sure to find out what frequencies a personal computer or laptop recognizes.

Important! The larger the number of antennas, the more stable the data reception / transmission.

Types of routers for 4g modem

Routers vary in operating time

If you need a portable and compact router, then give preference to those with a battery capacity greater than 1500mAh (1500mAh - 2-3 hours of operation). Or buy an external battery with a larger capacity. If you need a stationary device that is constantly connected to the mains, then the battery capacity is absolutely not important.

Compatible with provider modem

If you choose a device with a modem connector, then you need to remember that not all routers are compatible with modems. Each manufacturer has a list of modems on the official website that are compatible with its products.

Before buying, be sure to familiarize yourself with such a site so that in the future there will be no problems during installation and configuration, especially if you do it yourself.

Depending on the choice of model, the kit includes:

  • the device itself;
  • charger;
  • the necessary set of network cables;
  • a set of antennas for Wi-Fi.

In addition, some models have a number of additional functions: built-in Firewall (firewall - network defender), the ability to install additional printers and other devices, a USB port for connecting storage media, which turns the router into a data server.

The following models are distinguished:

  • Home / consumer routers;
  • Car routers - modem-powered, compact, produced with powerful batteries or powered by a cigarette lighter;
  • Internal routers - installed inside the computer;

The best and most practical router for home use is a router with a port for a 4G modem and a Wi-Fi distribution function, since this model is mobile and universal in use.

How to use a router for a 4g modem

If you have already purchased the device, then you have two options for installing it: connect it yourself or call specialists. In general, this procedure is not time consuming.

The most important thing is to follow the instructions:

  1. Check the compatibility of the router with the devices with which it will work.
  2. Turn on the router and connect the Internet to it. To do this, connect a USB cable or the provider's modem to the router via the WAN (Internet) port.
  3. Connect the router to your PC using the router's Ethernet (LAN) port and network cable.
  4. Turn on the PC and open the router's settings by opening a browser and entering its full IP address into the line, which is in the manual or model description.
  5. Open the Network Settings menu and save the default settings.
  6. Open the "Wireless network" menu and set the name of your wireless access point and create a password for it. Check the "Radio Signal Type" and "Security Type" parameters by setting the values \u200b\u200bwith which your PC can work.
  7. After saving the settings, restart the router.
  8. Connect your PC to Wi-Fi.

In order for the router to work for a long time and without malfunctions, it is imperative to observe safety precautions and connect it correctly, because correct installation is the key to further uninterrupted operation.

Installation Precautions:

  • Check the integrity of the device, if it does not correspond to the description or the integrity of some sections is broken, then in order to avoid problems, do not connect it and contact the technical support center.
  • The installation site must meet the following requirements: temperature from -10 to +40 ° C, the router must not be exposed to direct sunlight, the room must be ventilated, the router must be isolated from other electromagnetic devices and placed on a hard and clean surface;
  • Leave 10 inches of free space on each side of the router for heat dissipation, and provide a distance of 20 centimeters around the antennas.
  • The device must be in a stable position, out of the reach of children and animals.

  • Do not allow moisture to enter the router and other parts of its configuration (charger, cables, antennas).
  • Do not damage the integrity of the device and its parts.
  • In case of breakdown, do not disassemble the device yourself, but contact the technical support center.
  • Make sure the port lights are on.
  • If the router is not being used at this moment, turn it off.
  • Do not use the router in medical facilities, on airplanes, or in potentially explosive areas.
  • Clean the device by turning it off beforehand. Use a soft cloth to avoid damaging the device.
  • Turn off the router before removing the modem or USB cable to avoid electrostatic discharge.
  • In case of power surges or during a thunderstorm, it is advisable to turn off the router so as not to damage it.

Malfunctions

All router faults are divided into two types: related to the system software of the router or PC, and related to the technical integrity of devices.

The router does not turn on when connected to the mains.

Everything is connected, but nothing works and not a single light is on. There may be several reasons, and each has its own way of fixing it.

There are many reasons for this problem: marriage, power surges, non-compliance with safety measures, so be prudent.

First, check if the device is turned on, as sometimes it can turn off randomly. If it is on, then the problem is either in the "firmware" of the router, or in the battery.

To check what is the reason, check the battery performance with a special tester or connect a working battery to the router. If the device works, then you need a new battery. If not, then the problem may be in the firmware.

If all else fails, the device needs repair under warranty or replacement.

Devices don't connect to Wi-Fi

The reason sometimes happens, both in the router and in the connected devices. To check this, connect a new working device to the router. If there is no internet access, then the problem is with the router.

Follow all the steps in this sequence, moving on to the next if the problem is not resolved:

  • reboot the router and check if the buttons are enabled;
  • check the connections of each cable, because they may have moved away from the port;
  • check their integrity, both indoors and outdoors;
  • contact the provider and find out if there are any problems on their part;
  • recheck the settings and restore them if necessary;
  • try changing the Wi-Fi frequency, because in the presence of a large number of signals on one channel, sometimes failures occur.

If all else fails, contact technical support or replace the router.

If you open several sites at once, the Internet is disconnected

We reviewed the best Wi-Fi routers with support for 4G modems, study our list, choose the models you like and get reliable equipment at an affordable price.

When you need to connect your computer to the Internet, you first have to deal with two basic concepts: "modem" and "router". Although they denote means for creating and maintaining a communication channel between a PC and a network, they refer to different devices and are used in different situations.

What does a modem do

A modem is a device similar in appearance to a USB storage device (flash drive). It connects one device (usually a desktop or laptop) to the Internet. When the user activates the modem, the following happens: the modem determines which Internet operator to work with, connects to it, start transmitting user data and download information from the network to the computer. The modem is only responsible for maintaining the internet connection for one device.

The modem looks like a USB flash drive and is also inserted into the USB connector of a computer

There are two types of modems: 3G / 4G and ADSL. Today, the first type is mainly used, as it provides a more stable, faster, cheaper and more affordable connection to the network.

3G / 4G modem

Modems of this type are connected to the Internet using a SIM card. Almost all popular mobile operators (MTS, Beeline, Megafon, Yota, Tele2 and others) offer their services and special tariffs for modems. Moreover, most modems are ready to work with SIM cards connected not to a special tariff for computers, but only to a tariff with a mobile traffic package.

4G modems provide faster connections than 3G modems

Connecting to the Internet via a 3G / 4G modem is as follows: a SIM card with a pre-selected and paid tariff is inserted into the modem, the modem is connected to the computer and, using a special program supplied with the modem, establishes a connection to the network.

The price of a modem can range from one to several thousand rubles. An important factor affecting the price is support for 4G: modems that support this standard are more expensive.

Difference between 4G modems and 3G modems

When buying a SIM card and modem, remember that a 3G enabled modem is only capable of providing a connection in 3G and 2G cellular standards. If 4G support is declared in the name of the modem, then the device can provide communication in 4G, 3G, and 2G standards.

4G modems can be more expensive, and 4G internet rates are also generally more expensive than 3G. But for the higher price, you get a fast internet connection that is several times faster than the best 3G standards. The average speed of a 4G connection is 40-50 Mbps, and a 3G connection is 5-15 Mbps.

Cons of 3G / 4G modems

When choosing a modem, be sure to pay attention to the coverage area. All 3G / 4G modems are dependent on it.

The term “coverage area” refers to the area where a cellular network is available in your area. People living in Moscow and St. Petersburg, most likely, will not face the problem of lack of communication, since operators usually concentrate their forces on the territory of these cities. But if you do not live in a large city, then before buying a modem, be sure to look at the operator's official website if your region is in the coverage area. If the SIM card does not see the network, that is, it is out of the coverage area, the modem will not be able to work. The coverage area must be determined separately for 3G and 4G networks.

On the website of the mobile operator you need to find out where the network is "catching"

Video: comparison of 3G and 4G modems

An ADSL modem is a device that will provide your computer with an Internet connection via a telephone line. Such a modem looks like a router in appearance and can also distribute the Internet to several computers, since it has Ethernet ports for outgoing cables.

The ADSL modem has an input for connecting to a telephone line

Internet connection via ADSL modem

The connection is carried out as follows: a telephone cable is connected to the modem and connected to the connector of a special port, and a USB or Ethernet cable is connected to the other port, which is connected to the computer at the other end. The modem in this case acts as an intermediary providing a suitable frequency range for data transmission. Sometimes there are more complex designs that connect a computer to an ADSL modem using a router or access point.

Cons of ADSL modems

ADSL technology is practically not used these days for two reasons: it is more difficult to connect to a telephone line than to an Internet cable, and the maximum speed with such a connection is only 24 megabits per second. For comparison: a 3G modem under ideal conditions can reach speeds of up to 63.3 megabits per second.

What a router does

The router connects to the Internet via a modem or an Internet cable and connects several devices to the World Wide Web via Wi-Fi: computers, tablets or smartphones. Often in relation to a router, you can also hear the word "router" - it means that the router is engaged in the distribution of traffic coming from different devices.

The router has inputs for a modem, Ethernet cable and WLAN cables

Let's say there are two computers and one phone connected to a Wi-Fi network. On each device, the user does something on the network, sends some data to the Internet and receives information from the Internet. All these data streams pass through the router, which must independently determine which part of the information to send to a specific computer, and which part to a mobile phone, and not confuse anything.

The main characteristics of the router

When preparing to buy a router, pay attention to the following characteristics:

  • price: the cheapest options - from 1 thousand rubles, the most expensive - over 10-20 thousand rubles;
  • list of supported modems: a list of models that the router can work with;
  • support for 3G / 4G technology: all modern routers are able to work with a 3G network, but not all of them support a 4G connection; if you try to distribute 4G Internet from a router that does not support this technology, it will automatically switch to the 3G protocol, the router will continue to work, but high speed will not work;
  • range: the radius over which the Wi-Fi signal will be distributed depends on it; manufacturers usually indicate the range in ideal conditions (no rain, with excellent connection to the satellite, no concrete or other barriers), but in reality the router will be interfered with by walls and other obstacles, as well as, possibly, a low level of the Internet signal (its quality depends on the modem), so feel free to cut the declared range by 5–10 m; the average range of routers is 100 meters in normal conditions and 300 meters in open areas, and the connection speed decreases with distance from the router.

Pros and cons of a router

Using a router has two main advantages: signal amplification and the ability to distribute the Internet to multiple devices. All routers have antennas that help the modem to pick up the signal from the satellite, and the better the signal, the higher the speed of receiving and sending traffic.

The disadvantages of the router include:

  1. Its size. A standard device covers an area of \u200b\u200babout 300 cm 2 (about the size of a book).
  2. In addition, the router requires a constant connection to the power outlet, while the modem is powered from the USB port.
  3. When connecting a wired Internet to a router, problems can also arise: it is not possible to lay an Internet cable everywhere.

Does the router replace the modem

The router does not replace the modem, they work in pairs. The router itself does not know how to establish a connection with the satellite, this is done by the modem. The modem is inserted into the router and takes on the task of receiving and sending data, and the router only sorts out which of the connected devices to give, and which to receive and where to send.

A modem with a router together create a home Wi-Fi network with Internet access

The router can work not only with a wireless modem, but also with a wired Internet. In this case, the connection to the network will be provided by an Ethernet cable, but the functions of the router will not change.

Video: what is a router

What to choose: router or modem

It will not be possible to select only a router for the reasons described in the paragraph "Does the router replace a modem". When choosing a specific connection configuration, it is recommended to proceed from the following considerations.

  1. If you need the Internet for one device, while not tied to one point, buy a modem. You can plug it into a laptop and use it anywhere in your region (and abroad, too, but outside your home region, special terms and conditions usually apply).
  2. If you need Internet throughout your home for two or more devices at the same time, buy a modem and connect it to a router. At any time, you can remove the modem from the router and start using it outside the home. In addition, modern routers are so small and light that you can always take them with you on the road if necessary.
  3. If you need to provide a large number of devices with the Internet, for example, in an organization or a club, you need to install a router and connect to it either a powerful modem capable of providing a speed sufficient to work on all computers at the same time, or an Internet cable.
  4. If you are going to travel with a device that has a USB port or supports a SIM card (you can take out the SIM card from the modem and put it in your phone or tablet), then it is better to buy a modem and choose a suitable travel tariff.

Table: Differences Between Router and Modem

Video: differences between a router and a modem

The modem provides data exchange with the Internet: receiving and sending information. The router opens access to the Internet via a Wi-Fi network. A modem allows you to use the Internet on only one device, a router - on two or more. The throughput of the router is set by the manufacturer.

Glad to see everyone on our blog again!
You've probably noticed that some models of routers, in addition to other connectors, have a USB port on their case, and some even have two. Some of you even know why you need it, as you use it to connect a 3G / 4G modem or flash drive. However, few people know about all the possibilities of using the USB connector on a WiFi router. In this article I will list everything that can be connected to the USB port of the router and show you how useful it can be.

What is a router with a USB port for?

The functionality of a wifi router with a USB port differs from and depends on the manufacturer and the specific model. Moreover, with each new firmware, it also has new possibilities for using the USB port. For example, support for some new modems or the creation of a virtual server. Let's take a closer look at them on TP-Link, Asus, Zyxel, D-Link and others routers.

USB port on the router for 3G / 4G modem

I don’t know how anyone, but personally I bought my first router with a USB port at the dacha in order to be able to connect to the mobile Internet not only from one laptop, but from several devices at once. The first time I did this a long time ago, when choosing a router and modem compatible between the cathedral was a whole problem. Then, succumbing to the marketing ploy, I chose a combination of a Zyxel Keenetic 4G router and a Yota modem, since the advertisement said that these two devices were "made for each other."

Now I am sure that it was possible to look for other options, but then I didn't really want to delve into it and I took a ready-made solution. I discussed in detail the work of such a tandem in the article about the choice and connection.

WiFi router with USB port for connecting an external storage

The second thing I had to deal with was connecting an external drive to the USB port of the router. At first it was just a flash drive, but after "trying" this method, I began to use a full-fledged hard drive. For what? It's simple - you can use it as a network storage of files and have access to them via WiFi not only from one PC, but also from any phone or TV set-top box.

This is very convenient - after all, I used to download the same vidos from a computer to a USB flash drive, then I took it out, connected it to a set-top box and then I watched them on a large TV screen. With the setup of the network storage, these unnecessary steps were gone and all the necessary files became visible wirelessly on all devices at once.

When we connected the drive to the USB connector of the router, there are several configuration options:

Network printer

- another cool setting with which a printer is connected to the router in the USB port and shared via wifi from any device is also organized to it. Print a document from your smartphone? No problem, for this now you do not need, as before, to connect it to a computer and transfer it to your hard drive, or by e-mail.

What to look for when choosing a router with a USB port?

In general, you have already seen the benefits of having and using a USB port on a router. Now I would like to give some practical recommendations if you nevertheless decide to "get hold" of such a thing.

  • The first thing to pay attention to is that the connector is exactly the USB 3.0 standard in order to work at the highest possible speed. If you want to create a media server and broadcast high-definition video from it, then USB 2.0 may not cope with the task and constantly slow down. It will be a shame to spend several thousand rubles, and in the end not be able to fully use all the "goodies". The same applies to the drive connected to it - a flash drive or hard drive must have
  • Without straying far from the topic of external drives - keep in mind that the connected drive is often powered from the USB port itself, but in some routers its power may not be enough for anything other than data transfer. Worry in advance - ask the seller, read the reviews, -
    so that the router can transfer power to the disk via USB, or the hard itself must have external power - there are such models.
  • Pay attention to the supported functionality of the USB port of the router. Even if this connector is present, it does not mean that everything that I described above will work on this model. There are routers that work with flash drives but do not support modems, or vice versa. For example, Apple Airport (by the way, a cool router) has a USB connector on board, but it does not have DLNA or LTE Internet connection - it is only needed to create your own media server that works only on Apple and iTunes devices. Or, as in the case of Xiaomi - there is a connector, you can use it as a file server, but here's the bad luck - only through a special application that is installed on the computer, and dealing with it, despite the fact that everything is in Chinese, is very difficult, and it is not convenient.
  • The same applies to compatibility with 3G / 4G modems - there are a huge number of models, but not all are recognized by one or another router.

    A list of devices that are guaranteed to be friends with each other can be found on the official website of the router manufacturer. Look also at the descriptions of the latest official or custom firmware - perhaps with a firmware update, a router that did not recognize the modem before will suddenly work with it. For example, this was the case with me when I installed software from Padavan on one of the Asus.

  • Finally, as I wrote above, there are modifications in which 2 USB ports are built at once, such as in the Zyxel Keenetic Giga II. As you understand, the more, the better - you can simultaneously connect both a USB flash drive and a printer.

I think now you have no questions left, why do you need a USB port in the router and how to use it?

Thank you! Did not help

In this article I want to talk about ASUS router models that support 3G and 4G modems. I have recently published an article in which I wrote about routers with support for USB modems. But, there I considered models from different manufacturers, and in this article we will only talk about ASUS routers, and in more detail.

In a nutshell, what does it mean to support 3G / 4G modems. This is when we can connect a regular USB modem to the router, through which it will connect to the Internet, and distribute this Internet to our devices via a Wi-Fi network. Such a router is suitable for those who connect to the Internet via a 3G USB modem. If you have such an Internet, then you probably know that we can connect the modem itself to only one computer. And accordingly, Internet access will be from one device.

And what if we have several computers, and even phones with tablets. In this case, you can buy a special router with modem support, connect the modem to the router, and set up the Internet. And all our devices (laptops, PCs, smartphones, tablets) will already receive Internet from the router via Wi-Fi, or a network cable. I myself use such a connection, and, by the way, I also have an ASUS router. Model RT-N18U. Only the modem I now have is Huawei EC 306-2. I didn't take a picture of it, I took another one, it was rewound with duct tape It looks something like this:

And if for some reason you do not want to buy a router, and you have a laptop or PC with a Wi-Fi module, then you can try to distribute the Internet from your computer. Here is an instruction: how to distribute Wi-Fi from a laptop if the Internet is via a USB modem.

This article wouldn't make sense if you could just buy any router, connect a USB modem to it, and everything would work. The fact is that not all models of routers support Internet connection via 3G / 4G modems. And even if the router has such an opportunity, it is not a fact that it will work specifically with your modem.

Now we will figure out which ASUS router model you can buy to work in tandem with a USB modem. I will write how to determine whether a router is suitable for your modem (since you probably already have a modem)and how to set it up.

Which ASUS router to choose to work with a 3G modem

In this regard, I really like ASUS. They have almost all routers (and maybe all) that with USB ports support 3G / 4G modems. I think this is very cool. After all, if there is a USB port, then the matter is most likely only in the software. So why not make support for modems. This is the case with other companies. There are USB ports, but no support. Select models only.

Once again, I want to highlight two important points that I wrote about above. We will understand on them:

  • Choosing a router model that support 3G modems.
  • Checking the compatibility of the ASUS router with the modem.

As for the support for USB modems, in the characteristics of routers, this point is usually indicated by the item "WAN: 3G / 4G". At the same time, routers support an Internet connection via a regular network cable.

Let's list all models of ASUS routers to which you can connect 3G / 4G modems (I took information from the official website): RT-N14U, RT-N10U B, RT-N18U (I have one), RT-N56U, RT-AC68U, RT-AC56U, RT-AC87U, RT-N56U B1, RT-AC51U, RT-AC55U, DSL- AC56U, RT-AC1200G +, RT-AC88U, RT-AC3100.

As you can see, the choice is very large. For any request, and for any wallet. The only thing I would recommend is to take a router with Wi-Fi 5G support. I got a little excited by buying my ASUS RT-N18U. It does not support the new standard. If interested, you can read a detailed article on choosing routers.

How to determine the compatibility of a router with a modem

This is a very important point. Otherwise, the router may simply not see your USB modem after connecting. Or, not connect to the internet. Therefore, before purchasing, be sure to check that the router supports your modem.

First of all, find out the model of your modem. The model is usually indicated on the case of the modem. The official website has a page that contains all the modems that ASUS routers are compatible with. Here is the link: https: //www.asus.com...s_3G4G_support/. Go ahead and look for your modem in the list. You can use page search Ctrl + F.

If you don’t find your model, you can google about this request "router model + modem model". Perhaps you will find something interesting and useful. Further, you can call ASUS support and check with them. Well, if not, then look at routers from other manufacturers.

I can say for sure that the router will work with Huawei EC 306-2 and Novatel U720 (Intertelecom) modem. This is verified. Everything works very stable. True, it all depends on the modem and the operator. Since the wireless internet itself is not very stable.

Setting up a connection via a 3G / 4G modem on an ASUS router

Everything is very simple there. In addition, the control panel is the same on all models. Therefore, everything can be configured according to the instructions that I wrote using the example of setting up the ASUS RT-N18U router.

As far as I remember, the router began to distribute the Internet immediately after connecting the modem to the USB connector. The settings there look like this:

Choose, buy, customize, you will succeed. Even if you live in a village, outside the city, and you have the opportunity to connect only wireless 3G / 4G Internet, then you can easily make a Wi-Fi network in your house and connect all your devices. Moreover, the Internet is fast now, especially 4G. And 3G is enough even for Smart TV, if a good tariff, modem, signal and base station are not loaded. For higher speed, you can install an antenna for the modem, or tune the modem itself for better reception through the AxesstelPst EvDO BSNL program.

You can ask in the comments. Always happy to help. And I will be very grateful if you write about the compatibility of your router and modem. If you have already configured and everything works.
