Both Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge are configured to download files to the user's default download folder.
Location doesn't change across devices, so Windows users know where to look when it comes to downloading downloaded files on Windows computers.
While convenient, the download folder may not always be the best place to download. This can be the case if the main section of the computer is quite small. If you've ever tried to download a Windows ISO or other file that is at least a few gigabytes in size, you know that space can be a problem in these cases.
You can change the download save location in both Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge. The options for this are somewhat hidden, hence this guide.
Default download location
The default download location used by Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge to save files downloaded from the Internet to the local system is% USERPROFILE% Downloads.
USERPROFILE is a variable that refers to the registered user profile directory on the Windows machine, for example c: usersMartin.
Change the location of the Internet Explorer download folder
The method applies to all versions of Internet Explorer supported by Microsoft. Internet Explorer is the default system browser on all supported versions of Windows, except for Windows 10, where it was replaced by Microsoft Edge.
The browser is however available on Windows 10 a.
To change the file save location in Microsoft Internet Explorer, follow these steps.
Step 1: Open Internet Explorer, click the menu icon and select View Downloads from the context menu that appears. Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-J to open download files directly.
Step 2: When the download window opens, select the options link at the bottom left of the screen.
Step 3: Opens the download options screen, which allows you to set a new default download location and customize download notifications.
Just click Browse on the screen, use the folder browser to select the new location on your computer that you want Internet Explorer to use as the new download folder, and finally click OK to complete the change.
The boot options window should display the new folder name when changes are made. Note that it will only list the folder name, not the full path.
Change the location of the Microsoft Edge download folder
Microsoft Edge is a completely redesigned browser that is not much different from the interface with Internet Explorer.
You open the list of downloads with one click on the hub icon (three horizontal lines) in the browser interface and select downloads from the menu if they are not automatically selected.
Attention: Changing the download directory in Microsoft Edge is only available if Anniversary Updates are installed on the system. Edge did not list options for changing downloads in previous versions.
To change the default download directory of Microsoft Edge, follow these steps:
Step 1: Click the main menu icon (three dots) in the Microsoft Edge interface and select the settings option from the context menu that opens.
Step 2: Scroll down until you find the advanced settings section. Click the View Advanced Settings button.
Council. Clicking on the pin icon exposes the side settings panel so that it won't close without you doing it.
Step 3: Find downloads on the next page. Microsoft Edge displays the current location where the downloaded files are downloaded (full path). Click on change and select a new folder on your local computer to change the location.
For Microsoft Edge, you may also be interested in two other options for changing the download location: one is related to Group Policy, the other is by changing the folder directly using File Explorer.
Closing words
Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge will use the new folder for all file downloads since the change.
Previous downloads remain in the old folder, although if space is tight you may need to move the files from the old to the new.
If you are using the latest Build Windows 10, you will see that Microsoft Edge is now able to change the location of the Downloads folder, previously, using the browser settings, the folder for storing downloaded files could only be changed using the registry. By default, Edge uses the default Downloads folder for the user. In this article, we'll walk you through two ways to change the location of your downloads folder in Microsoft Edge.
The need to create a separate location for downloaded files only for the Microsoft Edge browser may arise in a number of cases, for example:
- You have changed the location of the default Downloads folder in Windows 10 by moving it to a different drive. It's no secret that you can choose a different location for storing files by changing the location of the "Downloads" folder on your hard drive, on another drive (in the case of using a solid state drive, the disk is SSD), or even another computer on your network. And simply, it is very convenient if you are using different browsers at the same time.
Method 1: Change the download location for Edge using browser options.
1. Launch the Edge browser and open the menu "Options", button … in the right corner or press Alt + X.
2. In the menu that opens, click "Options"
3. In the section "Options" find and click "View add. options"
4. In the opened Additional parameters, find the section "Downloads" and press the button "Change"
5. In the folder selection window, specify the location for the new folder where all Edge browser downloads will be stored.
Note: Although you can create a new folder in the location selection window using the right mouse button, we recommend that you create it in advance.
Method 2: Change the location of the Downloads folder for the Edge browser using the registry.
To change the default location of the Downloads folder in Microsoft Edge, you need to apply a very simple registry tweak.
1. Close Microsoft Edge browser.
3. Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \\ Software \\ Classes \\ LocalSettings \\ Software \\ Microsoft \\ Windows \\ CurrentVersion \\ AppContainer \\ Storage \\ microsoft.microsoftedge_8wekyb3d8bbwe \\ MicrosoftEdge \\ Main4. Here create a new string parameter and name it Default Download Directory.
Set the value for it, the full path of the folder you need ( created in advance) you want to use for the Downloads folder in the Edge browser. In the screenshot below, I am using C: \\ Edge Downloads
Now open Edge, click the Center icon ( first icon after address bar, favorites, reading list, history and downloads) and switch to the panel - Downloads or Downloads, depending on the version.
Now, this will be the default location for storing downloaded files in Microsoft Edge.
Each browser has its own characteristics of work and appearance. If an edge application was downloaded to a personal computer device, its owner must learn how to properly work with a system of such a plan. An integral part of this structural unit is the downloads section and it is with it that you have to work quite often. How to do this, make adjustments or supplement something, it is worth understanding more closely.
Edge file storage management - what you can do
Transferring informational or multimedia content from the memory of web resources to a computer is a rather critical process. All statements about actions of this nature are stored in a special folder that is embedded in the application used. Using such a Microsoft structure, a person will be able to perform the following actions:
- view the download log for the entire time of using the device;
- change the storage location of file documents;
- partially or completely eliminate content that is no longer suitable for use;
- carry out the movement of various documentary components.
All these processes are carried out exclusively in one item of the general settings menu, which can be reached by clicking on the three arrows in the upper right corner of the program. You can correct or add new settings as desired.
Delete downloads or change their location
To change the folder or disk where the necessary file components are automatically transferred from the network, you should perform a couple of simple actions of this nature:
- visit the installation menu of the browser system;
- open the download system in the web program;
- select the item to add or change;
- find the desired location on the computer device by adding it by default.
To remove certain content data from the device, you should stay in the same section of the settings, but at the same time select the icon for managing the downloaded components. After performing such an action, a person can select several items from the list, mark everything completely and perform the action of the desired nature.
The specified software is very close to Google Chrome in its structure and therefore there will be no problems with its use. If you need to adjust certain functional parameters, it is worth remembering how everything was in chrome and doing it according to a similar principle.
Update from 08/02/2016:
The previously absent option in Microsoft Edge to specify a custom folder for storing downloads other than the default user profile Downloads folder was added as an advanced browser option in Windows 10, version 1607.
Original article:
It's no secret that in its current form, the new browser in Windows 10 lacks some seemingly simple settings. For example, by default, Edge saves all downloaded files to C: \\ Users \\ UserName \\ Downloads, but at the same time it does not give the opportunity to select another directory both through the settings menu and immediately before starting the download of the file.
Judging by the comments on the web, many users complain about this as one of the shortcomings of the browser. In particular, the inability to change the default directory is frustrating for people who have a small system disk, and therefore prefer to download files to another disk or partition.
You can be sure that one of the future updates to Edge will bring with it the ability to change the default file upload path, but if you want to specify your directory right now, then the registry editor will help you with it.
So, if for some reason you want to change the download location of files in Microsoft Edge, just follow the simple instructions below.
If the browser is running, close it.
Open Registry Editor. To do this, enter regedit into the search bar on the taskbar and press Enter.
If the User Account Control windows pops up, click "Yes".
Follow the following path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \\ SOFTWARE \\ Classes \\ Local Settings \\ Software \\ Microsoft \\ Windows \\ CurrentVersion \\ AppContainer \\ Storage \\ microsoft.microsoftedge_8wekyb3d8bbwe \\ MicrosoftEdge \\ Main
On the right side of the window, right-click, select New, click String Parameter. Name the created parameter “ Default Download Directory».
Now open it and in the "Value" field enter the path to the folder where the downloaded files should be saved. For example, if you want the browser to download to the Downloads folder on the E drive, enter E: \\ Downloads.
TIP: to copy the path to a folder, right-click on it while holding down the Shift key, and then click "Copy as Path" in the context menu.
Well, that's all.
Addition:
As noted in the comments, you can do without all these complications and just change the location of the Downloads folder. To do this, right-click on it, select Properties, and then go to the Location tab.
Enter a new location for the folder and click Move.
Then confirm the move.
The files stored in it will be moved along with the Downloads folder.
Have a great day!
For a long time, Internet Explorer was the default browser in the Windows operating system. It did not suit most users for a number of reasons and was mainly used to load other browsers after reinstalling the system. In Windows 10, Microsoft introduced a new browser - Microsoft Edge.
Differences between Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer
The main question that tormented most users of Microsoft's operating system was whether the browser update would be another attempt at rebranding, or whether the new default browser would really change from the previous one. Let's consider their main differences:

Launching Microsoft Edge browser
The new browser is built into every Windows 10 system natively. But if you have an outdated version of the OS from Microsoft installed, it will not work. You can try this in several ways:
![](https://i0.wp.com/skesov.ru/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/1.jpeg)
Thus, launching a new browser on Windows 10 is not difficult.
Problems launching Microsoft Edge browser
The obvious disadvantage of the browser is its "lifespan". This is a completely new program, and it still has a lot of improvements and fixes to go through. Although the developers update Edge on a regular basis, problems with launching the browser on various configurations may arise right now, for example, due to an incorrect update or viruses that have damaged some program files. If waiting for an official patch is unacceptable for you, you can try to solve them on your own.
First of all, if your browser stops opening pages or is doing it slowly, you should pay attention to temporary files. Clearing them can restore Microsoft Edge to its original speed. And it is performed as follows:

![](https://i0.wp.com/skesov.ru/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/1-80.jpg)
There is another way to clear data - using special programs. For example, in CCleaner it is very easy to do this:

Performing a factory reset
If the browser stops working immediately after starting or refuses to function normally, you can reset the settings. This is done through the "Run" window:

![](https://i2.wp.com/skesov.ru/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/1-51.png)
You can also create a new account for factory reset. This action will create a completely offline folder with browser files that will not get corrupted or modified. For this:

Useful Microsoft Edge browser settings
Examining the settings of your new browser will help you optimize it for the best experience. It is worth knowing about the following options:

Disable or uninstall Microsoft Edge
If you decide to use a different browser, it's a good idea to get rid of Microsoft Edge. But since this browser is built into the system by default, it is not so easy to remove it completely.
Disable Microsoft Edge manually in Windows 10
Manual shutdown means changing the default browser. Indeed, it is enough to assign a different browser that will interact with all links, and you can forget about Microsoft Edge.

Removing the browser through "Explorer"
Another option is to go to the browser settings location and completely delete the entire folder. This is a rather crude method, but it does not require any special knowledge or programs from you. Where is this folder mentioned earlier:
![](https://i2.wp.com/skesov.ru/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/1-51.jpg)
Copy Microsoft Edge settings before uninstalling to help restore its functionality if necessary.
Uninstalling Microsoft Edge via PowerShell
You can also uninstall the browser via PowerShell. Enter the name of this utility in the Start menu and run it. Then follow a series of steps:
![](https://i2.wp.com/skesov.ru/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/1-49.jpg)
Upon completion of these manipulations, the original browser of your system will be completely turned off.
Uninstall Microsoft Edge using third-party software
There are quite a few programs available to disable or uninstall the Microsoft Edge browser. But they work on a similar principle, so it is enough to consider only one. Download the free Edge Blocker program from the official website:
![](https://i0.wp.com/skesov.ru/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/1-20.png)
With the help of such a program, you can control this browser and turn it on only when necessary.
How to install Microsoft Edge after uninstalling
The way to restore Microsoft Edge using a command or create a new user is yours. But there is another way to install the browser after uninstalling:
![](https://i0.wp.com/skesov.ru/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/1-83.jpg)
![](https://i0.wp.com/skesov.ru/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/1-18.png)
![](https://i0.wp.com/skesov.ru/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/1-17.png)
The new browser from Microsoft does its job pretty well. When properly configured, it can replace other browsers, which in itself is a great achievement for the default browser. If Edge doesn't suit you, you can always uninstall it or disable it.
